Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Before I take my SB radio back for a refund....

2012-02-11 Thread pqpq

Thanks all.

Some of this I don't understand - will have to do some more
investigating.

I really don't want to go down the remote control/smartphone route -
the whole point of the radio is that it's a convenient stand-alone unit
which is easy to control direct from the controls on the unit.

So is there really no way to at least skip to a particular letter using
the controls on the radio? I can't find anything which will do it.
With almost 4000 artists on my database, even getting to the end of the
As takes a while...

This is a bit of a deal breaker, so if I can't sort this out the radio
will probably go back.

Cheers.

wow 4000 artists, compared to my Collections, that translate to about
10.000 CDs...
How do you navigate them for the SB attached to your hi-fi?!

There's a bug with the current version - unless you install another
app as well then it does not show up on the My Apps menu.

I am working out how to fix this - but in the mean time, please install
another app too and you should see a BBC Radio menu under My Apps.

You could organize your music into alphabetical folders then access them
by My Music Music Folder, choose whichever alpha folder you want.

Also, when navigating albums or artists, doesn't your Radio display a
large alpha letter in the background? This way you can really spin the
knob quite quickly through the alphabet.

By allowing you see where you are while continuing to scroll quickly.
That is, you don't need to actually read individual album titles or
artist names.

Combine this with a good method of fast spinning -- my favorite is a
single index finger on the edge of the Radio's big knob -- and you can
get through a collection pretty fast. And don't forget to go backwards
to get to the second half of the alphabet. That is, get to T via U, not
via S.

The Radio really isn't the best player for heavy searching, unless you
pair it with a smart phone app or the alpha/numeric IR remote.
The Touch is much more adept at heavy searching with it's full onscreen
touch keyboard and/or the included alpha/numeric IR remote.

[SlimDevices: Radio] Before I take my SB radio back for a refund....

2012-01-29 Thread pqpq

I bought a Squeezebox Radio for my other half's birthday last week, and
while it does everything I hoped it would, it's proving so user
unfriendly that I know she won't use it. Before I take it back for a
refund, maybe there's stuff I could do to improve things.

So the problems are:

The main attraction of the Radio is using the BBC's listen again
service, so I installed the Applet. It is installed but I can't find
it anywhere to actually use it. If I do a manual search for BBC Radio,
there are some old programmes showing up, so maybe that's it, but the
search is so clunky that as it stands, the listen again won't get
used.

I have a vast CD collection ripped to a NAS drive, which works fine on
the SB attached to my hi-fi. On the SB radio, the search function is
so difficult to use (using the wheel to type in the search term) that
it won't get used. It means that everything takes too long to find to
be worth the bother, unless the artist/album/whatever start with an
A.

I put some of her favourite radio stations in favourites, but they were
wiped as soon as she switched it off - back to clunky searching again.
The favourites is now full of apparently random music tracks neither of
us have ever played. I've now tried the preset thing - let's see if
that stays put. Favourites it seems don't really work.

So all of this means that so far it's only been used for live radio
broadcasts - but given what she likes to listen to, a DAB radio would
do that job much better than a squeezebox does because it doen't rely
on a wi-fi signal.

So can I sort these problems out or should get a refund?

Thanks

The BBC Radio applet is perfect on the SB radio. Listen Again works a
treat.

Did you install it on the radio itself via Settings, Advanced, App
Install ? If I recall it's installed into My Apps - you can move it to
the Home menu - hover over the app - press + and you'll get extra
options to move the app. Once it's on the Home menu - do the same
again and move it up or down the menu.

Are you using the LMS server to organize your music? Are your tracks
tagged correctly (eg. using mp2tag)?

There are two lists of favorites
- those on mysb.com
- those on your LMS.

If you put the Favorites on mysb.com and then changes to play music
from local NAS - the mysb.com favorites will seems to have disappeared
but they are accessible from the on mysyueezebox.com . However if the
siutation is reversed - your LMS favorites are not visible on your
mysb.com.

You can get a remote with number keys on it. 2 = ABC, 3 = DEF and so
on. Works great for search. All Squeezebox remotes with number keys
will work with the Radio. Any of these should do the trick: '1'

Or, even better, if your SO has a smartphone, the best solution is
probably to download an app. For iPhone, use iPeng, for Android use
SqueezeCommander. Better than any IR remote, IMO.

If you use the presets for 6 of your other half , it would be fairly
simple to operate and listen to some favorite stations. In time it may
prove to become more user friendly as she works through the learning
curve. I also agree that ipeng or squeezecommander would help to
simplify some functionality. Once learned, the functionality is
awesome(but yes, complex). Imho
