Actually, the big question is, now that they've finally given up completely on finding a use for SB hardware and software, will they finally sell the darn thing to someone who might have an interest in reviving the product? It's not worth much anymore, but I bet by now they've written the whole thing off such that any amount would be better than nothing. 2-SB3s, 1-Duet, 1-Touch...and an iPeng convert. Hello all, I saw this response posted on the official Logitech forum a few days ago. It is a response from Camacho who is listed as a Logitech support specialist to the question 'Has the UE Smart Radio been discontinued': Begin Quote: -At this moment we do not sell any UE Smart Radios anymore but we still support them. However, we do not have any information about similar products coming out but if we know something we will let our users know about it. Kind regards, Camacho Support Specialist- End Quote: So now the big question, how long will Logitech continue to support the necessary infrastructure to keep the radios alive now that both the Squeezebox and UE radios are EOL? I hope it is at least 2 years which should be enough time for some type of alternate service provider to take over support. But the point is: they didn't remove it from _all_ stores, just the US one. If my iPeng figures are an indicator then the majority of Squeezebox users are now in Europe, no longer in the US as they used to be when I started it. In the early days, iPeng sold more then 50% of it's copies in the US, not the US aren't even the biggest individual market anymore. Now for iPeng UE, that statistic is a bit inconclusive due to low numbers but one month the US was even behind Switzerland in iPeng UE sales so I'd say it's similar. So it might be that Logitech just gave up on it in the US. Just face it, these kind of decisions is not something Logitech are good at communicating with there customers, they probably want to be sure someone still buys the UE Smart Radio devices they have left in the stores. In theory it could also mean that they are about to announce a UE Smart Radio 2, but personally I doubt that's the case. It will be interesting to see how they will handle uesmartradio.com. Since they still have devices under warranty, I would suspect that they need to keep something running, but theoretically they can just downgrade all UE Smart Radio users to Squeezebox Radio and make them use mysqueezebox.com instead and avoid the need to run two set of central servers. Of course, doing that would be kind of admitting that the whole UE Smart Radio product was a mistake and I wonder if the management really is prepared to do that. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Is the Smart Radio about to be discontinued?
Hm, anything really official should be allowed to get published or it's not really "official". Maybe I should have said "an official announcement" or something. Wasn't there one when the Squeezeboxes were discontinued? --- learn more about iPeng, the iPhone and iPad remote for the Squeezebox and Logitech UE Smart Radio as well as iPeng Party, the free Party-App, at penguinlovesmusic.com *New: iPeng 7, the Universal App for iOS 7* pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=100616 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Is the Smart Radio about to be discontinued?
The answer to your thread question is almost certainly yes. Squeezebox as a product family was moved a few years ago to Ultimate Ears (UE), the "cool" audio arm of Logitech acquired through acquisition. About a year after UE took over Squeezebox they announce the "Smart Radio", the same hardware as Squeezebox Radio but with a different firmware that amongst other things explicitly severed compatibility with any previous Squeezebox. This was a clear move by UE to distance themselves from the "too complicated" Squeezebox and move to a more mainstream user interface. This product has been a failure. They alienated the core consumer by providing a non-backwards compatible device, so they were relying on a more-or-less completely new set of consumers to purchase the Smart Radio. Those consumers did not show up. Earlier this year they freed up the Smart Radio hardware to allow the installation of Squeezebox firmware. There were at least a few threads on the forum of people thinking Logitech might be re-embracing Squeezebox. I chose to interpret it as something different: since no one was buying the Smart Radio, they were trying to speed along the flushing out of all stock of this device. Then they could wash their hands of it for good and push all of their effort into Bluetooth speakers, which I have to guess they are both selling a lot of and making great profit margin on. It doesn't hurt that the software engineering effort is an order of magnitude less. An aside, I'm watching an NFL game the other day and a big section of the game is "brought to you by Sonos". Ad space on an NFL broadcast is very expensive, so it's crystal clear there's a market niche for what Squeezebox was (and what Sonos continues to be), it's just that Logitech has never been a company built to deliver such a thing. Logitech's core business has been and always will be accessories, and good streaming audio systems are more than that. I'll keep rocking my squeezeboxes until they die of old age, but they are dead to Logitech, including the failed Smart Radio. In fact, I think they've all been dead to Logitech for quite some time, it just wasn't public information. Squeezebox is dead. Might explain the deep discount we saw on them a few weeks ago. Picked one up with battery for $99. m1abrams's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=850 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=100616 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

Or just no longer being sold in the US? It's no longer mentioned on the US Logitech web site.
