My 2nd SBRadio (UE Smart Radio really) has just arrived - 76GBP
including shipping from Logitech UK store in their "closeout" section.
Part of that discount was because of a 1 day promotional code.

The cross-grade to SBR worked flawlessly.

I think they have to take a guess somewhere , a lot of us have unused
squeezeboxes as spares ?
Someone is probably sitting in UE radio .

They probably go from when all inventory is gone , but then a couple of
radios can be stuck at a retailer .
So again a guess .

Thanks for the correction. The earlier post was about both SB and UE and
you're right that the demise of the online service means different
things to both. Even so, if they wait until the warranty is expired on
the last UE Smart Radio sold before pulling the plug on UESmartRadio.com
they don't have to do anything about moving users to SB firmware. They'd
be sleazebags if they didn't help with migration, but I wouldn't hold my
breath.

For the Smart Radio this is NOT the case. Without UESmartRadio.com the
Smart Radio will be a brick.
So I'd guess they'd at least somehow have to move people over to a
Squeezebox firmware which will be especially interesting for those whom
they convinced to "upgrade" to the UE firmware in the past

Um, sorry that's not how it works. There is no such contract with
existing owners. In many countries, notably the EU member states, they
are required by law to continue support for two years after the last
damned device is sold. After that we're on our own. And the only

They'd better support it until the last damned device dies. They

Actually, the big question is, now that they've finally given up
completely on finding a use for SB hardware and software, will they
finally sell the darn thing to someone who might have an interest in
reviving the product? It's not worth much anymore, but I bet by now
they've written the whole thing off such that any amount would be better
than nothing.

Hello all, I saw this response posted on the official Logitech forum a
few days ago. It is a response from Camacho who is listed as a Logitech
support specialist to the question 'Has the UE Smart Radio been
discontinued':

Begin Quote:

-At this moment we do not sell any UE Smart Radios anymore but we still
support them. However, we do not have any information about similar
products coming out but if we know something we will let our users know
about it.

Kind regards,

Camacho
Support Specialist-

End Quote:

So now the big question, how long will Logitech continue to support the
necessary infrastructure to keep the radios alive now that both the
Squeezebox and UE radios are EOL? I hope it is at least 2 years which
should be enough time for some type of alternate service provider to
take over support.

A shame, but I can't really say I'm surprised, after dropping the Touch

I hope my boxes will continue to function for many years yet, and that
we see some replacement emerge with the same or better functionality,

Yes, I can confirm that.
I did buy a Sonos ZP90 a few years ago. At that time I was fed up with
the buggy LMS releases (around version 7.6). The Sonos was around for
about one month. I really could not live with such an inferior system.
When you're used to Squeezebox then Sonos is not an option.

Revisiting this forum after an absence of some time. I still use my SBs
at home, but haven't updated any software or hardware in a long time.
Now I really regret not getting the rack-mountable SB when they were
being sold.

This situation reminds me in an odd way of the Amiga. Commodore bought
an amazing, innovative product and company and had no idea what to do
with it. They ended up killing it.

2013-12-29 Thread peterw

The going price in the US is now $120, mostly from small resellers
(Amazon Marketplace, etc. -- congrats, m1abrams, on your $99 score). I
sure hope there's good news around the corner, but this does feel like
the end, the supply dwindling & driving up prices. If that's the case,
well, good luck, Michael.

Yea. But the point is: they didn't remove it from _all_ stores, just the
US one.
If my iPeng figures are an indicator then the majority of Squeezebox
users are now in Europe, no longer in the US as they used to be when I
started it. In the early days, iPeng sold more then 50% of it's copies
in the US, not the US aren't even the biggest individual market
anymore.
Now for iPeng UE, that statistic is a bit inconclusive due to low
numbers but one month the US was even behind Switzerland in iPeng UE
sales so I'd say it's similar.

So it might be that Logitech just gave up on it in the US. Or they have
more leftover stock in Europe.

As far as I remember there was only the unofficial post in this forum
(which might not have been authorised by Logitech management):
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?96188-New-Squeezebox-Radio&p=714295&viewfull=1#post714295

And officially there was just the the UE Smart Radio announcement:
http://forums.logitech.com/t5/Squeezebox-Players/Logitech-UE-Smart-Radio/td-p/884530

And a bit later they also officially posted the open letter to
Squeezebox fans:
http://blog.logitech.com/2012/09/28/an-open-letter-to-squeezebox-fans

However, if they have removed the UE Smart Radio devices from the stores
it's pretty official in my mind, I can remember any time they have done
that in the past where it hasn't meant that they were about to stop
selling the product officially. Just face it, these kind of decisions is
not something Logitech are good at communicating with there customers,
they probably want to be sure someone still buys the UE Smart Radio
devices they have left in the stores. In theory it could also mean that
they are about to announce a UE Smart Radio 2, but personally I doubt
that's the case.

It will be interesting to see how they will handle uesmartradio.com.
Since they still have devices under warranty, I would suspect that they
need to keep something running, but theoretically they can just
downgrade all UE Smart Radio users to Squeezebox Radio and make them use
mysqueezebox.com instead and avoid the need to run two set of central
servers. Of course, doing that would be kind of admitting that the whole
UE Smart Radio product was a mistake and I wonder if the management
really is prepared to do that.

not really "official". Maybe I should have said "an official

Wasn't there one when the Squeezeboxes were discontinued?

You should know by now that the guy who had heard anything official is
either not visiting these forums, or not allowed to say anything anyway.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Is the Smart Radio about to be discontinued?

2013-12-24 Thread bklaas

The answer to your thread question is almost certainly yes.

Squeezebox as a product family was moved a few years ago to Ultimate
Ears (UE), the "cool" audio arm of Logitech acquired through
acquisition. About a year after UE took over Squeezebox they announce
the "Smart Radio", the same hardware as Squeezebox Radio but with a
different firmware that amongst other things explicitly severed
compatibility with any previous Squeezebox. This was a clear move by UE
to distance themselves from the "too complicated" Squeezebox and move to
a more mainstream user interface.

This product has been a failure. They alienated the core consumer by
providing a non-backwards compatible device, so they were relying on a
more-or-less completely new set of consumers to purchase the Smart
Radio. Those consumers did not show up.

Earlier this year they freed up the Smart Radio hardware to allow the
installation of Squeezebox firmware. There were at least a few threads
on the forum of people thinking Logitech might be re-embracing
Squeezebox. I chose to interpret it as something different: since no one
was buying the Smart Radio, they were trying to speed along the flushing
out of all stock of this device. Then they could wash their hands of it
for good and push all of their effort into Bluetooth speakers, which I
have to guess they are both selling a lot of and making great profit
margin on. It doesn't hurt that the software engineering effort is an
order of magnitude less.

An aside, I'm watching an NFL game the other day and a big section of
the game is "brought to you by Sonos". Ad space on an NFL broadcast is
very expensive, so it's crystal clear there's a market niche for what
Squeezebox was (and what Sonos continues to be), it's just that Logitech
has never been a company built to deliver such a thing. Logitech's core
business has been and always will be accessories, and good streaming
audio systems are more than that.

I'll keep rocking my squeezeboxes until they die of old age, but they
are dead to Logitech, including the failed Smart Radio. In fact, I think
they've all been dead to Logitech for quite some time, it just wasn't
public information.

Squeezebox is dead. Long live Squeezebox!
cheers,
#!/ben

one up with battery for $99.

Or just no longer being sold in the US?
It's no longer mentioned on the US Logitech web site. While it is still
showing in the German version of the products web site.
