[rails-oceania] Re: Best laptop to buy for linux?

2009-12-21 Thread Adam Meehan

> What's the state of Bootcamp? I want to boot into Linux but could keep OSX
> hanging around.

Having recently had the experience with dual booting on the latest MBP
with Ubuntu I can give a bit of input. Disclaimer here is that I have
abandoned Ubuntu for OSX over a month ago and the following info may
be outdated.

You are best to use rEFIt for boot loading. Gives you more options and
can load more OSes if need be.

http://refit.sourceforge.net/

As for general usage it works fairly well. The integrated button on
the touchpad causes some very annoying issues. You will need to do a
fair bit of
tweaking of the settings to get comfortable. The MacTel packages were
not all updated for the latest Ubuntu or the MBP 5 series hardware, so
its a bit mix and match. This seemed to be more the case with the 15in
(5,3).

Observations/Annoyances:
- 15 inch requires you recompile the kernel with a soundcard hack
after any kernel updates
- battery life is poor, ~2hrs, unless you try a raft of power tweaks
that may or may not help.
- most function keys work with the latest package for them (can't
remember name) though I had trouble getting it to load on boot
- light sensor doesn't work
- switch between graphics cards doesn't work. high perf graphics card
is used all the time which sucks power
- sleep mode works from memory
- latest ubuntu boots very slow, though this is observed on all
hardware

Ultimately it worked but for day to day productivity it became
annoying with the touchpad issues and short battery life. Also you
sacrifice the seemless integration between OS and hardware which OSX
gives you, which I have since discovered is rather valuable.

[rails-oceania] No response to job listings

2009-12-21 Thread Dylan Egan
Is this at all possible? I couldn't really care less if someone has posted a
job thread and it's badly worded or buzzword heavy. What annoys me is seeing
responses whinging about them. Maybe the people who have the most input on
how to structure such emails should post a guide on the wiki and pass that
on to them privately. If they don't get any responses and have received the
guide in private hopefully they'll come back with a restructured post, but
for fucks sake we've got to stop ambushing everyone.

Or better yet get rid of the postings all together and have everyone looking
for a job head to Centrelink. Remember, they're "Giving you options".

Someone said we're lucky to be getting job postings and they're right, but I
think we're even lucky enough to have new people still interested in the
community at all.

Cheers,

Dylan.

I'm interested to see whether the company allows its employees to
drink beer during office hours because for some people they code
better when drinking. Some company does not allow drinking beer during
office hour because of HNS regulation.

Personally, I couldn't care less the format or the language people use,
providing they are genuine. It's not as though every other post on the list is

What I am sick of is seeing people jump on job posts, when TBH, after the last

Nice to see some community support for this company. To me that means
a whole lot more than the initial email.

Ryan I'm not that interested in what you talk about at standup or when
you do lunch. I'm sure it's interesting but that's more culture which
is an introduction thing. For me I'd be more interested in the tech,
and loosely the application. Cms's aren't that inspiring but
something that's a bit different and using tech in interesting ways
is worth some extra effort to look into. Is OSS encouraged? Is it to
be an assembly project only or is there willingness to look at special
tech if it's a better fit for certian parts?

That's the kind of info that would attract my attention so that's what
I'd like to see from job posts.

form of manual install (as is often the case with Linux).

Dunno, but I find it extremely handy for web-testing using Parallels Desktop to
have multiple VMs running XP + IE6, XP + IE7 and XP + IE8, given that those are
the browsers where things fall apart the most...

In the past I've also had a VM that ran Solaris in roughly the same
configuration as our servers, which has proven to be useful occasionally with
some troublesome binary installs.

Good question... from what I've found with Parallels, the virtual machine
shields you from a lot of these issues. I expect VMWare has similar advantages.

Re: [rails-oceania] Best laptop to buy for linux?

2009-12-21 Thread Korny Sietsma
I don't know how they are since ceasing to be branded "IBM", but my
favourite linux laptop was my old Thinkpad X41:
  http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:X41

It had a huge battery life (8 to 11 hours, depending on how much I tweaked
it)
And a decent hard disk (for the day - 80G!)
And a good Intel graphics card, no compatibility issues at all
And a reasonable range of hardware you could add - it took an attachable
base plate, which you could use to swap in the external CD/DVD burner, or an
extra battery, or an external SATA drive.

Sadly, it went to my girlfriend to write her PhD on, when work gave me a
MacBook Pro. A nice machine, but MacPorts is horrible, no
ext2/ext3 support is insane, the X-windows integration is ugly, and having
to pay for VMWare is just plain annoying - and I get about 2 hours
battery life, not 8, these days :(

I don't know if Lenovo have maintained their quality standards - and their
prices were pretty painful. But it was a great machine.

- Korny

* I got 11 hours on an international flight - by setting up a 1G RAM disk,
copying movie files to the disk, and then sleeping the hard drive while I
watched the movies... with the brightness turned down to minumum!

A Macbook is the only laptop that will let you run OS X alongside
Windows, Linux, Solaris, BSD etc., so I'd suggest getting a Macbook
regardless of whether you want to use OS X at the moment. Unless
you're willing to live with shit, flimsy hardware, a decent non-Apple
laptop is going to cost the same amount as a Macbook anyway.

Also, it helps to have OS X around for if you ever need to do things
like plug your laptop into a projector, share files, join a WPA-802.1X
network etc. and have it *just work*. Fumbling over some esoteric X
configuration issue might get some laughs at a tech. meetup, but it's
likely to loose you jobs if you try it in client meetings.

Cheers,

Nathan

[rails-oceania] Recruiting three roles in Melbourne

2009-12-21 Thread c3alister
Do you want to champion Rails and agile development in a fast-paced
and growing consulting company?

We are big enough and committed enough to Rails to need a permanent
team to develop our portfolio of three Rails apps, and anchor our
current multi-disciplinary team and outsourced development partners.

We need three roles of varying levels in Melbourne, and as we are
currently doing it all across multiple apps (ie. code, deploy,
architecture, sales, support), this is a great opportunity to broaden
your base, and/or take control and push up to the next level.

If you'd like more information call Alister on 0422 003 598, or just
send your resume to i...@c3businesssolutions.com and we'll get in
touch.

Thanks
Alister Lee.

Re: [rails-oceania] Best laptop to buy for linux?

2009-12-21 Thread b...@bensand.com
I use linux, mac and windows all the time, (or would, if the macbook
hadn't died). been sitting on the bench for six months waiting for a
new hdd, but I just don't need it enough to do anything about it.

For email and web app use on the road:
linux: resumes from suspend in <3 seconds and connects to 3g fast and
easy (2 clicks, for either my "3" or Telstra connections)
mac: resumes really fast (1-2 seconds), Load of stuffing about for 3g
- 10 clicks over 1 minute or so.
windows: slow to resume, just as much fiddling for 3g as mac

For using web and email on the road, especially public transport,
linux wins by far. 3g configuration is much more responsive.

For desktop use, lack of easy MS Office is a pain, but I have a remote
session to spare Windows box whenever I need it. Small time penalty
there, but I survive it well enough. The ease of keeping linux up to
date saves me time over mac and windows.

I'd setup a virtual machine of windows on my netbook if I really
needed office on the road, but I just don't
Linux used to be a pain for connecting to projectors, but now it's fine.

So all in all, I tend to absorb the productivity gain, as the customer
doesn't care what I'm using and just wants the job done at a
reasonable rate vs. the rest of the market.

Yeah, when I upgraded from 8.04 to 9.04 (ubuntu) on my little dell vostro
1400 I got some pretty laggy graphics and some sound issues running intel
integrated graphics, intel wireless etc so the "intel hardware is always
safe" didn't apply at that point - hopefully an exception to the rule.
I reverted to debian testing rather than going back to 8.04 or 8.10. Seems
like ubuntu are making lots of changes all the time so if you're laptopping
don't jump on a just-released version or at least be prepared for
possibility of some problems if you do. (I guess it's not like switching to
debian sid where you hear (old) stories of broken versions of pam being
checked in :) )
(ubuntu is definitely the one I'd recommend for someone making the switch to
software freedom.)

My full time work machine is a Dell E6400 with the Intel graphics + wireless

I believe it's a legacy feature, added to an early version of Ruby
before Matz realised it would be cool to be able to interpolate the
results of any expression, which needed {...}.

There's a fair argument to be made that the old syntax should
have been removed, but I guess it's understandable; when you
have a small community around a tool, you don't want to alienate
them.

My wife's running Ubuntu 9.04 on her Dell XPS M1210 - very good
performance and just plain works out of the box with Linux. On the
_very_ small scale I just installed 9.04 Netbook Remix on a friend's
MSI Wind netbook, and that worked like a charm as well.

A word of warning: don't touch Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) with a 50'
crappy stick. There are a tonne of regressions (DVD playback broken
in the default media player for Gnome, FFMPEG busted for encoding
DVDs, etc.). I've had filesystem corruption on my Compaq C700 with
EXT4 too.

Stick with 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope). Much better.

Anyone care to offer an explanation as to why it doesn't work for
local variables?

e.g. the following doesn't work:

name="James"
puts "hello #name, nice to meet you!"

but the following does:

@name="James"
puts "hello #...@name, nice to meet you!"

On the face of it, it seems like an arbitrary distinction but there's
probably a logical reason.

Re: [rails-oceania] Best laptop to buy for linux?

2009-12-21 Thread b...@bensand.com
I've been using a Kogan Agora for some time.
They're very cheap and have the nicest screens for travelling of
anything I've seen - bright and no mirror finish glare issues.

http://www.kogan.com.au/shop/kogan-agora-netbook-pro/

Pricing for $400-$500 including shipping depending on the discounts at the time.

Pros:
Cheap
Awesome screen
Runs Ubuntu Netbook Remix very nicely - follow guide at:
http://agoranetbook.kayno.net/
(installing is a bit of a pain, the simplest way out was to take out
the HDD and load the OS in a desktop PC, and then put it back)
suspend/resume works fine
webcam works
no windows tax (if you care about that sort of thing)

Cons:
OS installation is fiddly (only boots off 1GB USB drives), so you need
to find one, or put HDD in desktop
screen close doesn't always detect, so safest to disable and rely on
key combination for suspend
WiFi is unreliable (I use 3G, so I don't care)
bluetooth is by tiny dongle, but i never got it working anyway.
external monitor is 1024x768 max, (driver can go to 1400x? under
Windows, but not under Linux yet).

output to projector is fairly straight forward, plug in the DSUB, and
then activate the external monitor at the same time as you disable the
internal one. it's only when you try to run the two at the same time
that you have problems. to go back, just follow the procedure in
reverse. there's a system tray icon to manage all of it, so you don't
need to go hunting through menus.

MSI Wind u100 is meant to be pretty decent, the screen isn't as bright
as the Agora, but it's a bit more mainstream and can be forced to run
Mac OS.
http://apcmag.com/the_cheapest_mini_macbook_youll_see_this_year_msi_wind_with_os_x.htm

I'll probably buy a u100 soon to try it out first hand, and then get
either a u100 or an Agora as a spare depending on what I like most.

just realised you probably don't want to run a netbook os for a
desktop PC... although to be fair, it's very clean and efficient and
might not be such a bad idea anyway.

Re: [rails-oceania] Best laptop to buy for linux?

2009-12-21 Thread Andrew Grimm
I'm actually doing the opposite - I'm replacing my aged Windows/Linux
home desktop with a 15" MacBook Pro (which'll probably stay home most
of the time as well)

Anyway, my small laptop is an Acer Aspire One. I'm able to use it to
and from work, which I couldn't do with a full-sized laptop. It has
had the following issues:
* The rubber grips at the bottom of the laptop have all fallen off.
* There was a stage where it wouldn't boot up at all, and just had a
blinking cursor at the top left hand corner. Tech support informed me
that I had to upgrade my BIOS by downloading something onto a USB
stick and booting up using it under Windows, and that fixed it.
* The computer suffers from occasional narcolepsy - it sometimes goes
blank, but pressing the "any" button makes it wake up as if nothing's
happened (no need to enter passwords or the like). I've only noticed
it when it's being used by itself, rather than when connected to power
and external hardware, so probably a non-issue.
* It doesn't have the battery life of a MacBook Pro. If you use it on
your way to and from work, you may be tempted to buy a second power
cord so you can recharge it at work.
* Under Fedora Linux, I usually reboot or logoff-logon if it needs to
switch from laptop screen only to laptop screen and external monitor,
but that's probably software rather than hardware
* You have to press the "Function" key to use "Home" and "End" on its
keyboard (sounds like a non-issue in your scenario though).
* The manual wireless switch is unintuitive - you pull it to the right
and it goes back to the left by itself, and this is for both turning
wireless on and off (I'm not sure if this switch works under Linux as
well as under Windows)

But other than those glitches it's great.

Putting aside the brand name question, make sure you get a model with
Intel wireless+graphics. Their drivers are all in the mainline kernel
and you *should* find everything will *just work*.

I recently purchased a Dell Latitude E4300 and have been really happy
with it. With the intel drivers mean previously problematic tasks like
hot plugging a monitor/projector and suspend/hibernate have worked
perfectly.

Does anyone have an suggestions for what I should get?

I am liking the sound of this.

1. Thumbs up to the topics. Particularly interested in transactional
vs reporting design and performance.
2. Format sounds good; a full day could be good too. I prefer weekdays.
3. I am sure you will be good mate!
4. Yes, I can bring my old beat-up MBP. Hopefully I get a new one for
Christmas.. might need to forward this to my wife!

[rails-oceania] Recruiting a rails developer in Brisbane

2009-12-21 Thread Mark Gandolfo
Hey Guys,

We're looking for a senior or junior rails developer for a full time
perm role in Brisbane.
We are a well funded start up, with a few rails developers and a
graphic designer already working here.

Recently we completed a prototype, and presented it to a select few
clients. All of which are over the moon.
Therefore we're now ramping up our efforts in the progress of creating
a final app which will be built from scratch, with lessons learnt from
our prototype.

Testing mentality essential, with experience in rspec and related
testing frameworks a plus.
Salary will depend on experience.

This is an exciting time!

[rails-oceania] rails dev positions available

2009-12-21 Thread Matt
Hi,

We're a team of five working full time on a single web app. The app
is reasonably mature but not currently in production. We're after on
or two quality programmers to join the team. You don't have to be a
rails expert but you need to be a quality programmer. For the right
person this is a great opportunity to some up to speed with rails in
the real world.

So, the project is... a ror app (latest version of rails), we use
mysql and mongo (document database). The app sends sms, email and
integrates with social media apps (twitter, facebook etc) and has been
designed to scale massively. This is our own app, we don't do
application development for other companies. We manage the project on
assembla and host it on multiple cloud providers (aws, slicehost,
gogrid, linode).

The team has a lot of experience and we foster a friendly
collaborative environment. Development follows the agile model, so
daily standups, frequent releases, frequent review/refine sessions
with others in the company. We're largely insulated from support
(we're not the only developers in the company).

The company has about 30 people in Melbourne and a few in the UK, so
we're not a fragile startup. The office is in South Yarra.

We're looking for permanent people not contractors.

If you're interested shoot me an email with your cv and a brief
description of who you are and what you've done.
matt.s.fitzger...@gmail.com

No recruiters - candidates only.

Cheers,
Matt
