In general I find kool stop pads, especially salmon, to be squeaky and
not of any increased effectiveness to justify the persnickety
squeakiness. My choice these days is actually an el cheapo Tektro V-
brake pad that I buy in bulk (25 pairs in a bag) from QBP. I think you
can get them in non-bulk quantites, too. Should be about $10-15 for a
bikesworth at your LBS.

[RBW] Re: shifter opinions

2009-01-30 Thread clayton

I run Paul thumbies with 8 speed shimano barcons, and love them! I use
interrupter brake levers and it makes for a very comfy setup. The
shifters are protected from falls and easily accessed. Most of the
time I am riding on the tops of the bars anyway, and I don't have to
release the bars to shift. Being a retired Paramedic, I always
wondered why anyone would run Silvers (bar end mount). They look like
perfect little daggers that would pierce you in an accident. If I had
them, I would wrap the ends in rubber tape, then dunk them in tool
handle dip stuff. I'd give them many coats, until I was sure they
would not stab me.

shiftiness plus they are simpler that way and the bike looks cleaner.
The only bar end shifters that I like are the old short and stubby
Suntour ones that I have on my mustache bar bike. Riv used to sell
these when they were available. I think Paul thumbies might work
better than bar end shifters for the above stated reasons if you don't
like stretching forward to shift. I do have Silvers on our 'family

that bar/bike combo. Never used Shimano bar enders.

[RBW] Winter Riding Tips...Best Tires for considerable snow?

2009-01-30 Thread Sean Whelan
I was never a mountain biker, so most of my attempts to ride in the snow
usually end up either with me staring up at the sky from a cold an painful

What do you folks do?

[RBW] Re: Winter Riding Tips...Best Tires for considerable snow?

2009-01-30 Thread Patrick in VT

I think it depends on what is under the snow.

If it's just a blanket of 2-4 inches of snow over asphalt, I find that
a skinny tire works well - it cuts through the snow and gives me a
good feel for the road.

If there's ice or hard-packed snow hiding under fresh snow, I use
studded tires. This is typically the case in VT when we get snowfall
after snowfall and the temps have been in 'teens for a few weeks. The
plows don't quite get it all and there's a thin layer of icy stuff all
over.

anything over 6-8 inches and it doesn't much matter unless you have a
Pugsley.

In any event, it's so much the snow and ice that gets me - it's the
greasy, sloppy mush that the snow turns into after the cars have at it
all day. that's the stuff that threatens to take me down regardless
of what tires I'm running.

2009-01-30 Thread charlie

I've been riding my Schwalbe Marathon 700x47's (41mm actual) on my
rims. I run the pressure on the snow at around 60 psi but I weigh 255.
These are o.k. on dry snow if I ride easy but I would think a more
aggressive knobby tread and or studs would be better if you are on
snow all the time. When the road is icy I stop riding. This info is
regarding road riding and not off road stuff. We've only had snow
three times where I live, so far, with a maximum of one foot but it
kept melting and freezing so I only rode a few times on it.

Ugh, yeah, dealing with that stuff for a couple of weeks now on my commute here

skitters around--it's worse than riding in sand.

I'm running Nokian Mount and Ground studded tires with the back tire reversed

[RBW] Non-Aero Hood Replacements?

2009-01-30 Thread Paul Cooley

I took my original non-aero brake levers off my Rivendell a few years
ago because the hoods were disintegrating, and I had some aero levers
in my parts drawer off another bike. I've decided to replace my
brakes with the wide-profile Tektros, and that has me thinking about
putting my non-aero levers back on. Are there hoods available
somewhere? They're the Shimano Dura-Ace from Rivendell circa 2000. I
noticed Velo Orange has Cane Creek hoods, but the web site says they
are for Dia Compe levers and may fit others. Does anyone know if
they would work?

[RBW] Collective nouns for Riv's bikes

2009-01-30 Thread Chris B

Hi All

The recent inaugeration bike pool photos and Grant's message that some
QB's were comin' in got me thinking about collective nouns for Riv's
models. Weren't many of these invented by folk while out ridin' in the
country and doing country things? Thinking about this entertained me
as I was pedlin' the old Hilsen into work this morning.

For the AHH, I like a skein of Hilsens (to me, perfectly sums up its
gracefullness and adaptability). But I'm also fond of a clan of
Hilsens.

The Quickbeam was more problematic though, with the conflict between
plural bikes and the defining single speed. I thought maybe a spin of
Quickbeams or a grunt of Quickbeams? But this seemed too divisive.

A drove of Bombadils?

A forrest of Redwoods?

Perhaps my most inspired though, was a cast of Rivs?

Happy ridin'

IMO, there is no winter tire that excels in all conditions. I find
the Nokian Mount Ground tires to be generally very good winter tires
for most winter conditions that I cycle in. They're sized 559x45mm
and I run them between 35-45psi, depending on conditions. They
perform very well when temps are very low (15F to -25F), with up to a
4 snow layer, dodging (and hitting) snow cookies, the occasional
sidewalk detour (when conditions warrant), and on light snow covered
ice. In a few other conditions, they're overkill: so smaller tread
blocks, a narrower profile, and less studs would perform better.

When snow is sticky, thickly rutted, and has a slimy base, (temps from
20F to 35F on an unplowed, paved surface) I prefer a slightly narrower
tire at a higher pressure and less and/or negative tread. The wider
tires I've used (including the Mount and Grounds) tend to half float,
half sink in that stuff and your wheels constantly drift.
Additionally, the snow packs up into the tread, making pedaling much
more difficult, and traction minimal. These tires excel at most other
conditions though, and so, I'll continue to use them on my commuter.

I've also had the following experiences riding these tires in the
winter:

Panaracer Pasela 622x37mm and found them to be a great winter tire for
when roads are better maintained, but no studs meant cornering was
tricky and sometimes dangerous. Not so great getting up steep, icy
roads.

Continental Town Country 559x57mm and really liked that they didn't
pack full of snow and provided pretty good traction, but again, were
unstudded and found they floated a bit too much in the loose stuff.

Nokian A10 584x36mm and find them excellent tires on most winter
rides. They're better than the Mount Grounds when roads have been
plowed, they're worse when AOT is on strike.

Regarding winter bicycle riding, the best advice I can give if you're
having problems getting going is to: keep pedaling.

Momentum will get you through most everything, except corners.

[RBW] Re: Winter Riding Tips...Best Tires for considerable snow?

2009-01-30 Thread fenderbender

Lot of good info here! Were I live the temp change so frequently that
I usually ride on frozen and badly plowed bike path and roads in the
morning and in snow slush back. Like mentioned studded tires are a
must here so another vote for the Nokian MountGround. They are heavy
and with the extra resistance far from swift. But the studs sit in a
four row configuration, cheaper tires have only two, so they bite in
corners making them great for MTB-ing too!
Studs sit slightly off to the side so inflated to 3,5bar dry roads
don't wear them down too fast (mine are 3-years and still have great
bite!). The more severe conditions are the less air I use, going as
low as 1,85bar.
For road bikes I think the new Marathon Winter are a great tire. Four
rows of studs, tighter thread and a lower weight. From what I heard
they use the same make of studs as Nokian. Tried a set of studded
IRC's in the 90's but they were crap as the studs disappeared into the
rubber!

[RBW] Re: Winter Riding Tips...Best Tires for considerable snow?

2009-01-30 Thread BykMor

Hello Sean,
I just wanted to add my personal experience with 2 studded tires. I'm
on my 3rd winter with some Nokian Hakkapeliitta's (W106) and the studs
still have good bite. I leave them on my daily cyclomuter from the
beginning to the end of winter. This winter I tried an Innova studded
26 in the rear (due to a wheel size change) and the studs are already
worn down and useless (in use for about 3 months now). I recommend
sticking with a brand that uses a hardened carbide stud.

I ride in Salt Lake City through the winter and recommend studs. As
mentioned above, conditions are always different and the best I hope
for to not to lose control every time I hit the inevitable ice patch.
4 inches of fresh Utah powder over a clean path is a blast to ride
through... no matter what the tire.

Winter is not a time not to ride your bike.
Cheers,
BykMor

American Cyclery would be the closest, and one of the best/oldest.
Especially good if you like track/fixed gear stuff- it's been one of

[RBW] Re: Winter Riding Tips...Best Tires for considerable snow?

2009-01-30 Thread Invisible

I live in Juneau, Alaska, where we get a lot of snow of very different
consistencies from day to day. I also have no interest in swapping
tires and adjusting pressures each morning before starting my commute.
I've found that Schwalbe Big Apple 29er tires in the 60mm size can
work in most anything. I keep the pressure very low - no more than
15psi. Basically, I want them as soft as I can get them.

As with the other setups described, mine has trouble when the snow's
density gradient is cross-wise to the bike's motion. Also in snow
bottom-bracket-deep or deeper. And because the tires have no tread or
studs, going uphill on ice sometimes just doesn't work. This is my
second winter on this setup, and I'm satisfied. Your mileage, though,
may vary - more in this case than in most others.

Michael, how did the Rom fit you?

Hi, I'm not sure exactly what information you are looking for. The 55
cm Rom is pretty much like a 56 cm Rambouillet in fit, published
geometry is at

http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/romulus/pages/17-downtubedecal.html

I'm about 5' 7 with I think about 82 cm PBH, so as far as top tube
clearance and seat tube length the fit is fine, not a lot of standover
but it's not a problem.

I started out with a 9 cm stem, and that's not really too stretched
out but I had a back injury and some neck pain from looking up at the
road and wanted a more upright position and so I switched to a shorter
stem with more rise. If I were getting a custom bicycle for drop bars
I think I would want a slightly shorter top tube, and that's less a
matter of my physical dimensions and more a matter of my flexibility
and somewhat head-forward posture. The Rom has toe clip overlap, and
if the top tube were further shortened without changes elsewhere, the
existing toe overlap would worsten.

Hope that helps,

Michael

 Chris

[RBW] Tolkien Fans

2009-01-30 Thread Paul Cooley

I'm curious how many Rivendell owners first noticed the company
because they were LOTR fans. I first heard of them on a site talking
about commuter/touring bikes. Actually, I just Googled it, and the
site is still up: http://www.faughnan.com/touringbike.html

The name Rivendell caught my eye right away because I'm such a
Tolkien fan. Richard Sachs or Bruce Gordon just didn't have the
same draw for me. And when I looked into what Grant was trying to do,
I was sold.

Actually, the whole thing started because I went to my LBS to buy my
first new bike since I was a little boy, (this was in 1998 I believe),
and what I had in my mind was something like Eugene Sloane's Singer
from A Complete Book of Bicycling. At that time, at the LBS, it was
all either mountain bikes or racing bikes. I was so disappointed when
I looked around. There was nothing like a Singer in there.
Nevertheless, I let the owner of the shop talk me into buying a hybrid
as being the best bike available to tour and commute on. (I don't know
why I didn't research it further on the internet. I guess I just
didn't think of the web as a bicycle resource at that point). I
absolutely hated the bike from the first day. I knew very well it
wasn't anywhere close to what I wanted. What ensued would fill too
much space, but suffice it to say that the LBS wouldn't take the bike
back the next day, even for partial credit, wouldn't take it on
consignment, the bike had numerous problems, and the owner of the shop
blamed me for the problems and wouldn't fix things even though the
bike was on warranty. (The main problem being a rear spoke would
break every couple of weeks for no apparent reason. The owner accused
me of thrashing around on it initially, and then claimed that it was
because I was hauling a Burley trailer).

Needless to say, I no longer shop there. I was so angry, eventually,
that I spent far more than I had in my budget for my Rivendell. But I
did get what I wanted, (though I get angry at the toe clip overlap
from time to time).

Adventure Cycling was my first intro to Rivendell. Don't' remember when,
but it was probably a John Shubert article.

Are you new to the list? If so, welcome. If not, greeting anyway. I'm an
Albuquerquian and I think the last time I rode in Santa Fe was circa 1993; I
remember the long slog up the hill to a trailhead just out of town, north I
think.

It was your blog that caught my eye, and I read your post on the Railrunner
with interest; one of these days, in warmer weather, I'll have to try riding
one way and taking the RR back. I live about five or six miles along the RG
and Paseo trails from the nearest stop.

What sort of Rivendell do you have?

Lastly, an almost-connection: I *almost* got a job teaching at St John's in
SF back in the early '90s; rather glad I did not, after all, but I did
follow a similar undergraduate curriculum way back when.

I love that, it's perfect! And not just for Quickbeams.

And for Paul, the name definitely resonated with me, LOTR fan that I
