Hi Steve, when I had upright bars, I found a really tall/short Nitto Technomic (non-dlx) worked really well. You didn't say what kind of stem you have, but maybe try that first??? Ouchy. I hope you make a speedy and complete recovery! I got doored a few years ago. Took the corner of the car door right in the crook of my arm (not quite the arm pit but close.) Nearly severed my right bicep. I was pretty lucky though, no permanent damage other than a pretty wicked looking scar. Also it's an ugly thing to deal with but I would look into a lawyer. Lost work time, quality of life, etc... etc... adds up. I don't like our litigious society but this is definitely a case of negligence that caused some pretty intense bodily harm. [RBW] Re: Mixing Components
Hello zrainryder, Nice bike you picked up. If you want an enexpensive solution to mixing components take a look here: http://jtekengineering.com/shiftmate.htm . It may give you some options that you may not be aware of. I have two bikes set up with jtek. One campy shifters & shimano xt throughout. the other has Campy shifters shimano/sram rear end. The setup works perfect on both bikes and has not given me any trouble in two years. One of the bikes is a touring bike that has seen many long trouble free miles. Thought I'd share this experience with the product. Gary On Jun 30, 8:01 am, zrainryder wrote: > Just picked up an unusual bike on Craig's list (Serotta Hors > Categorie). [RBW] Re: Mixing Components
I'd second the idea of riding it for awhile and then making the decision. My daily ride(Ebisu) is a 48/34 with a 12x27, which gets me up any hill I'm likely to encounter. My weekend in the mountains bike is a Rambouillet with a 46/36/26. Maybe you need to figure out exactly how you want to use the bike before changing anything. Cheapest change is to go to the campy 12x29 cassette, then look for 48/34 rings (Peter White stocks campy rings & the LBS can order campy compatible rings for you. If you stick with 9 speed, you can keep the very nice campy brake lever and use the Riv Silver Shifters ($35). All four of my bikes use Silver shifters, either b.e. or d.t., & Shimano 9 speed cassettes and they shift great. I used indexed shifting for many years. now I would never go back to it. Waste of money & not as much fun for a recreational rider. [RBW] WTT and/or FS: 64 cm Rambouillet
Hi everyone. From the "this may be a long shot department," would anyone like to trade his/her 62-cm Rambouillet for my 64? I’d also be delighted to chat off list with anyone simply looking to sell a 62 cm or buy a 64 cm. Mine is a blue 2004 that has never been crashed nor dropped (absolutely no dings), but there are some paint scrapes on the fork blades and right chain stay from use. I'm open to trades for other bikes with 59-cm top tubes (62-cm QB, 61-cm Bleriot, 61-cm AHH, etc.). Many thanks. --Will --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Our condolences, Jim. I hope you are up and about soon. It doesn't look like that hand will want to squeeze a break lever any time soon. Give yourself time. I had surgery and stitches on the ball of my foot on April 7, and today's 40 mile ride ended with my foot feeling like I had a nail stuck in my shoe, so I know how long it can take to heal these high use areas of the body. We take it you are abel to walk OK. Probably need pain meds for sleeping, better to stay ahead of the pain than to chase it. I carry homepathic Arnica in my bike bag for trauma pain, but have always been too confused and worried about the bike to remember to take it when it's needed. Well, darn shame that happened to you. Hope when the bike comes back it is alright. You do not need a big bill for repairs on top of the pain and suffering. [RBW] Re: Surly Cross Check sizing question
Riv builds a bike around and individual, I suspect , taking into account the torso. With a Surly you try to fit yourself around the bike. I used similar PBH ideas to match myself to a Surly K.M. only in inches. My PBH is right at 32 until I add shoes which makes it about 32 1/2. I *should* have gone with the smallest K.M. frame to my size (16) but I did'nt want so many toe jam issues so I went with a size 18 frame. (Knowing that I could use an Albatross to fine tune the torso issue.) It turns out that this was the most comefortable ride I've ever owned. When I stop I do have to sort of hop down but I don't feel that that sort of Cadallac comfort of an "oversized" frame should be compromised. I used the same idea for the Surly Inst. and got a frame slightly smaller for more controlled winter riding. The kind where you might have to perform controlled bailouts on ice yet still get that sort of "snowplow" effect in lower gears. That said I can only imagine what sort of critter the Bombidel would be like :) On Jun 30, 3:11 pm, Gino Zahnd wrote: > For those of you who ride a Rivendell, and also ride a Surly Cross Check or > Travelers Check, what are the sizing differences? > > It looks like top tube is going to be the best bet on sizing a Surly, but if > you know of any amazing secrets, please let me in! > > I'm currently trying to decide whether or not to couple one of my Rivs for > all the travel I do, or to just build up a Surly Travelers Check. > > Thanks, > Gino --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Brooks Swift or B17 Narrow, ti or steel rails?
We had a big discussion on this over in the Peter White Forum a couples week back - in the Berthoud Saddle Introductory Thread. Peter, I and some others argued that whatever minor difference in shock absorption may exist between steel, Ti and Carbon would be completely overwhelmed by the differences in one piece of leather to the next. Leather is an organic compound. There is no way leather on every saddle is not going to be at least slightly different from the other. 99.9% of the feel of the saddle will be in the leather. If you do not mind paying extra, and the minor weight saving is important to you, go with the Ti. For my money, I would go with the steel and spend some of the savings on leather conditioners and maybe a real nice saddle cover. [RBW] Re: Brooks Swift or B17 Narrow, ti or steel rails?
i think any difference in feel is due to the leather. i own ti and steel rail brooks - the only difference is weight, and i don't really notice that either. my ti swift is my favorite because it fits the best. i'd be just as happy with it if it had steel rails. the b-17 narrow is flatter across the top and feels wider somehow, although i think it's the same width as the swift. i haven't the opportunity to break in a b-17N though, so that's just an initial impression - not a real opinion. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Bicycle Times magazine #2
I subscribed and received #2 a few weeks ago...Clif put it well "better than Bicycling." Hopefully it will mature with future issues. [RBW] Brooks Swift or B17 Narrow, ti or steel rails?
Hi! I'm very pleased with the Swift ti's I've fitted to my current fleet of bikes. But due to the resent price hike I must question my reasons for buying the titanium rail versions. As I now have two more builds near compleation that need some seating but my funds are limited. One is a resurrectio and the other a lovely vanity bike. Anyone tried both the Swift and B17 Narrow and could tell me the difference in "feal"? Is the dampening of the steel rails that much different too that of the ti-version, and does it excuse the added cost? [RBW] large size touring bike?
Hi, Does anyone know where I can get a 68cm Atlantis or another similarly large sized touring bike by the end of July? (Note: Rivendell isn't making 66cm or 68cm Atlantis frames anymore.) [RBW] Re: Whoa! Bombadil component alert!
Second that. Lovely bars but they disappeared for a reason. But I guess these are mainly for custom builds anyway. I have a Peugeot MTB c 85 with a slightly to short TT. The bars has very little height and no forward extension to play with so it's now converted to grocery getter. On 1 Juli, 04:00, bpus...@aol.com wrote: > In a message dated 6/30/2009 9:02:46 P.M. I used the black safety releases that come with the set of SKS fenders. I thought I'd use the feature more than I do, but found that when set up so that I have clearance in all three gear combos, there's enough give in the fender that it doesn't even pop out when I drop the wheels out (with JB's) I'm fenderless right now, but when set up, it looks like this - http://www.cyclofiend.com/ssg/2007/ssg017r3-cyclofiend0107.html (And the fenderline was improved a little this past winter from the photos - but my main goal is to set it up so I can run three gear combos.) - Jim -- Jim Edgar cyclofi...@earthlink.net Cyclofiend Bicycle Photo Galleries - http://www.cyclofiend.com Current Classics - Cross Bikes Singlespeed - Working Bikes Your Photos are needed! - Send them here - http://www.cyclofiend.com/guidelines "I threw one leg over my battle-scarred all-terrain stump-jumper and rode several miles to work. [RBW] 61cm Atlantis 57cm Homer Hilsen
I just bought a Waterford made Homer Hilsen frame and fork from Hyde Park Cycles for the old price of $1500. They have a 63cm and a 57cm Hilsen still available and also a 61cm Atlantis frame and fork that is not on the site. I have no affiliation to the store but thought some people trying to find a cheaper Riv frame might be interested. Jim the owner is a really nice guy and the number is 208-336-5229. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group.
