my dogs hike, run, swim, and retrieve regularly. they even go mountain biking with me. so, it's easy to see whey they are a bit resentful about being tagged non- sporting just because they don't hunt and participate in field activities. Probably a lot more clever and better behaved than most breeds as well. People get trapped in categories. Too bad. Like most things Berthoud, at $250 (more if you like cork finish) it is not cheap. I have had execellent success the past 2 years on Selle Anatomicas. I got 2 from RBW when they were about $159. I see them now at $136 online (Outside Outfitters) and close to that elsewhere. As per Grant's original write up, they quickly go to full adjustment, but then they stay there a long time. I have 2 slotted styles and one without a slot (which I actually prefer). Don't know if Berthoud does this, but Selle will re-skin a worn out saddle for $75. Time will tell how well Berthouds stand up to use. Brooks of course is still a reasonable choice at $95 (Nashbar, mabe less elsewhere for a B17) but I am not a lover of the break in period. The quality is evocative of the old kangaroo Maressi shoes from the mid-80's, which were unparalleled. After seeing them in person, the price / performance combination is hard to beat. [RBW] Nitto Big Bag rack attachments
A while back there was a discussion regarding the purpose of some of the tabs/features on the Nitto Big Bag rack, and no one was sure what they were for. [RBW] My Bombadil frame is at RBW!!!
Keven e-mailed me yesterday to let me know that my Bombadil frame has arrived and is waiting for me. His words were that it looked incredible... I can hardly wait to see how the paint scheme turned out. I'll be picking it up on Monday afternoon, but the new Cane Creek headset that Mark had suggested hasn't arrived yet, and it won't for another week or two. My options are to wait, choose a DuraAce headset (same as I have on the Homer) or choose a Chris King headset. The standard Tange is also an option. Any suggestions on the headset? Sweet! What colors did you go with for the paint? As for a headset, I have a Tange Levin on mine, and it works great- I've done some bumpy riding with it in the heavily rooted woods around here, in addition to a regular 40-mile round trip commute on marginally decent roads, and it remains as smooth as ever. Yes, it's only 20 bucks, but don't let the price fool you- it's a really good headset. Can't wait to see your new Bombadil built-up. [RBW] Re: AHH as a road bike
I see where you are coming from. Making a clear distinction between a touring frame and an all rounder designed for long reach brakes and bigger tires could be difficult. However I'm not so sure that a MUP is the best place to notice a clear difference between narrow tires or wider tires. In my area bike paths are generally flat, smooth, narrow, crowded in the summer and inconvenient to get to but then I live in a rural setting and riding on the open road is what I must do if I want to ride at all. Were it me, I would build up a lightweight ( under 20 pounds) single speed for the MUP and gear it maximally for whatever terrain that happened to be. If you don't ever plan to tour, racks and all, maybe sell the Atlantis but that is such a useful bike I would keep it. I think you would be crazy to trade your Hilsen for a Ram , gee whiz ,the Hilsen is such a better bike overall. My advice, get some Jack Browns or something in the 32mm wide lightweight neighborhood and pump them up for your weight and don't give it another thought. In the meantime, get your Atlantis all racked out with bags and camping gear and plan a tour out in the country or several overnighters on the weekend. Lastly you may want to look into having a custom built frame with all the bells and whistles for your style of riding..a skinnier tire bike that can still take fenders and loaded with braze ons for racks etc. More of a Brevet bike, oh wait, that describes the Hilsen.. h! [RBW] New Bombadil group on flickr
Hi All, I just wanted to bring to yall's attention a new flickr group dedicated to the Bombadil.So far I am its only member, but hopefully it will grow fast.I know there is already a terrific group dedicated to RBW, but I figured the Bombadil is a really unique and special bike, even among Rivendells, and that it might warrant having its own flickr group. I know there are already quite a few Bombadil owners who have shared images of their rig on flickr, and they've all been invited to join (or at least, I hope they have). If there are any more owners lurking here, who have not yet snapped a photo, or uploaded images of their Bombadil to flickr, please do! I'm hoping it will be a great way to showcase the versatility and configurability of this great bike. Hullo, I have a pair of the Dromarti shoes. They are indeed made by Marresi, even the box they come in is a Marresi box. The shoes are the cycling equivalent of dress shoes. They do not look like sport shoes by any means. You must wear Rapha or Tweed to look OK with these shoes. Beware, they run narrow. My options are to wait, choose a DuraAce headset (same as I have on the Homer) or choose a Chris King headset. The standard Tange is also an option. Any suggestions on the headset? [RBW] Silver shifter problem
Has anyone had trouble removing a derailleur cable from a Silver downtube shift lever? I was changing my cables today and found that the head of the cable is stuck in the shift lever hole. I tried everything to remove it, and I think I pretty much destroyed the shifter in the process. I like how these shifters feel and would buy another in a heart beat, but not if this is a persistent issue. Is this a case of user error? Are there any tricks to avoid this kind of problem? I seem to remember hearing that derailleur cable ends come in two flavors: Shimano compatible and Campy compatible...one of which is slightly larger diameter than the other. Sorry, but I'm not sure which is larger. Maybe the smaller one would not get stuck next time. Get the Chris King. Yes, they're expensive. They also look really good, are wonderfully smooth, and seem to be set it and forget it. The Bombadil deserves it.I have these on both rivendells and last spring I took the 1 King I was hoarding and had it installed on my X0-1. ...if you have nice parts, may as well use 'em up.
