I finally finished the porteur bar wrapping/twining/shellac on phase 2 of my
AHH.  I moved the shifters to the down tubes, and haven't looked back.  Also
have some inspired mounts of the basic Planet Bike Blazer LEDs for night
commuting duty.  Opinions:

Bars - love the positions.  My hands naturally fall at the bends and they work
perfectly for my 10 mile normal ride.  When I need to go more upright, I just
move back.  Narrow, so they are much like drop width.  I can really get low by
holding the fronts and resting my forearms on the swept back parts - seems to
be a good tuck.  The reach to the down-tube shifts hasn't been a problem, and I
immediately got used to shifting w/o looking.  Haven't done a long ride yet,
but will update when I do.

2 watt Planet Bike Blazer - Bright enough, but not a whole lot different from
the 1 watt or even the half watt when riding on city streets or semi-lit trails
with ambient light.  When I went up a totally dark trail, it really lit up the
path, so it's plenty bright for my commute.  Great blink mode, but I'm still
underwhelmed overall.  I think I'm one of those guys who wants the super lumens
- I'm used to the bi-xenon car lights...

I didn't think I'd ride this bike in the crappy wet Seattle winter months for
commuting, but it's so comfy, I just have a hard time getting out the winter
bike.  The Jack Brown blues are still going strong - no flats.  I did extract a
nice piece of glass the other day when I was inspecting the tires.  It never
made it through, but it was a bit disconcerting.  Oh well - got my frame pump
finally, so I'm ready...

Brian -- very cool bike!  Love the wrapping job.   Question about the bars:
prior to wrapping the bars, did you experiment with the lever placement at all?
Specifically, did you try the feel of the ride with the levers mounted back
more towards the bar ends?

[RBW] Re: Anyone running Hetres + 50mm Berthouds on a Saluki or other 650B Riv?

2009-12-17 Thread Ego Martini
Have the Hetres on my Bleriot - awesome tires, nothing faster for
gravel and ruff roads. I have the V.O. Zepplins with the Dia-compe 750
center pulls ( these brakes work and look great - a great deal for the
price) and I have a V.O. Carrier front rack. It was a little beyond me
to install all this properly myself - got a great bike mechanic to do

Thought about bar-ends, but wanted to try DT. Like it more so far, as I
tended to bump the bar-ends. It also makes me shift less and think more :)
On the question of lever placement, I left the bars bare for about a month
and moved the levers around. This was where I liked them most. I didn't
try bar-end levers. I thought it would feel odd. I find that it's handy
having the levers in front, as I actually use them for grips when climbing.
I couldn't mount these levers on the sides, as they would run into the bars
- I would have to use mtb levers on the side.

jammed into the front wheel resulting in an accident - if she didn't
ride so dreadfully slow, it probably would have been serious.

I wouldn't bother putting fenders on a mtb, especially if you do any
kind of technical riding or like to bomb around through the woods or
on rough single track. not because of a potential accident, but I
just don't see the benefit of having fenders on a dedicated mtb.
fenders are for keeping the muck off of me when it rains/snows/etc.
if I'm mountain biking in the muck, i'm going to get filthy, fenders
or not. the bike will too.

that said, we hit some pretty knarly rough stuff in VT with fendered
bikes all the time with no problems other than the occasional fender
adjustment. if that's the kind of mountain biking you're talking
about, then by all means . .. fender it up.

They do, but unless they have re-designed them -- and quite possibly they

they can and do wiggle from side to side off-road.

They do do this, and they do grind or buzz on knobs. But so far mine haven't

I put them on during the wet and during the snow months here in ABQ and
they do make a huge difference especially on dirt. I don't ride in mud, but
I do ride through puddles and slush and I can attest that fenders on mtbs do
a great deal to keep bike and rider dry and clean.

[RBW] Re: AHH with VO Porteur bars

2009-12-17 Thread rb
My question as well. I have a Kog G1 and now an amazingly beautiful
Saluki - but I have gotten so used to the low trail of the Kog, that
front loading on the Saluki seems to really degrade the handling.
What is the general feeling about re-raking / swapping the fork on
these bikes; of course it'll gain the low trail feeling, but does it
degrade the handling in other ways, as these designs clearly were
meant for rear loading. Even though the riv site and grant are
proponents of baskets, and sure it's ridable, but the low trail front
load is such a reveletory change, I figured on such a great bike if I
was going to front load, that I'd want to change it to low trail. Is
it doable / worth it?

I didn't think I'd ride this bike in the crappy wet Seattle winter months

The pictures, which were taken about a month ago, are now online:

We built this bike with a little more rando attitude than our
typical customer requests, but no one has complained yet. In fact,
since a lot of people are used to STI shifters, that choice worked in
our favor. It usually sports a VO handlebar bag as well.

Just let me know if you'd like to swing by and take this bike for a

[RBW] Correct Bombadil size...

2009-12-17 Thread Rene Sterental
My 60cm Bombadil is finally finished (had too much work and family related
stuff these last two weeks). I will post pictures tomorrow. However, as soon
as I straddled it while building it, I realized I had significantly less
standover clearance than I do on my 61cm Homer. I can still lift both wheels
what appears to be around 1 inch, haven't really measured, but when I stand
over the bike with both feet on the ground, I can feel the top tube way up
there. The bike is currently built with Specialized El Capitan Control 2.2
front/2.0 rear tires for a full MTB experience.

Since it was raining during the weekend and I was swamped with work and
family, I was only able to take it out for a ride on Tuesday's commute to
work via bike and Caltrain. I rode it for a total of around 8 miles split up
in four legs. I'll post more details when I have more time, but my concerns
with the standover clearance persisted, so I e-mailed Mark @ Rivendell and
spoke with Keven today. They both feel that based on my measured PBH, the
60cm Bombadil frame is the right size, but if I feel it's too big, they will
set me up with a new 56cm frame. It's great to know that they will stand by
me and take care of my in this situation.

Today I commuted with the Homer, and even though barely a month and a half
ago it seemed like a huge frame (my conversion to the Rivendell fit
philosophy), compared to the Bombadil I felt I had lots of clearance and of
course, they both handle different.

I'm taking the Bombadil to Rivendell tomorrow so Mark and Keven can check my
fit and together, we can decide if it is indeed the right size for me, or if
I'll fit best on the 56cm. Standover height on the Bombadil 60 is about 2 cm
higher than on the Homer 61. Everyone agrees that you probably need a little
more clearance on a mountain bike than on a road bike, but what is really
the minimum clearance?

Anyway, I'll update the group on the decision we take tomorrow and will
submit photos of the complete bike. Going to a 56 frame will mean another
wait for it to be painted (minor annoyance), but also a new wheelset from
Rich, new tires, and no exchanging wheels between the Homer and the
Bombadil.

What is the feeling regarding standover clearance and minimum clearance?

René

PS.- The fender question is now on hold until the frame size issue is
cleared...

Re: [RBW] Correct Bombadil size...

2009-12-17 Thread cyclotourist
If you ride a 61 AHH, the 60 Bombadil should *fit*, but you're not going to
have much clearance. Two to three cm is fine on a road or trail bike.
They're made to ride, not stand over :-)

I ride a 61-62cm Rivendell frame size and decided that a 56cm frame would
probably be better for me. But I wanted it for rough off-road use and
needed the clearance to get a foot down on off-camber trails. So yeah, a 60
should fit you if you, but you'll need to go smaller if you are going for
off-road clearance.

Of course State of California finances has put any bike purchase on hold for
the time being, so I'm just giving you virtual opinions now!

Re: [RBW] Correct Bombadil size...

2009-12-17 Thread Rene Sterental
David,

That is exactly how I feel. Since the Homer and Bombadil are my last bike
purchases for the foreseeable future (I sold other bikes and stuff to
finance them), I have to make sure I get the right sized Bombadil. My goal
when adding the Bombadil to the Homer (I still have a 150mm dual suspension
Titus FTM trailbike) was to try mountain biking with it, but also use it in
my eventual pursuit of some form of touring/camping/adventure I can fit in
my life and hopefully introduce my 10 year old son to eventually as well.
It's a very long story, but it's just a dream I have and as I get older, I
think it at least gives some sense to my focus on cycling. I first need to
be able to get consistent on day rides... :-)

Anyway, the 60 Bombadil is not a problem for riding on the road, where you
are not going to have to do an emergency dismount on uneven ground and find
yourself hitting the top tube with your tender parts before your feet hit
the ground. Since I'm riding the Bombadil with Moustache bars and a Dirt
Drop stem (another first time for me), I cannot really assess if the frame
also feels long or not. I do feel stretched out when reaching for the
brakes, but not too much. I have to say I am surprised at how much I liked
those bars on that first ride.

I concur with your assessment that for rough off-road the extra clearance is
needed, but I have made so many mistakes in the past with frame sizes
(pre-Rivendell) that I just want to make sure.

Thanks for your feedback!

Beautiful machine, Brian. Thanks for sharing.

ATMO, medium trail is smart design. How much weight do you really
carry up front, and for how long? When I put a half-rack of beer up
front, I'm usually only carrying it for a mile or so. When unloaded,
or lightly loaded (which is most of the time for me,) medium trail
works great. I front-load my AHH and most of my other bikes - works

Re: [RBW] Correct Bombadil size...

2009-12-17 Thread cyclotourist
I don't think you could go wrong with either size, just one may be better
for your needs. Figure out what those needs are and then you'll have your
answer! :-)

I would be happier on a 56cm given the frame clearance and intended use.
What's your PBH height? I think mine is 89cm, and a 61-62cm Rivendell frame
with a 59cm top tube is just perfect. A 9 or 10cm stem then puts the bars
at a saddle height and the correct extension, but little top tube clearance
with that size. As mentioned, this is perfect for road and rough-stuff
riding, but on singletrack you sometimes need to get your feet on the ground
fast! A 56cm Bombadil would get me just about the same height/length and
give the proper amount of clearance needed on rough terrain. A 60cm would
just be too tall for me, although I could still ride it. A shame as I have
a great 700C wheelset I would love to use!

Believe me, I've spent time obsessing on this In the end, the 60cm
doesn't have enough clearance and the 56cm is the wrong wheel size (for
me). Hence my questions about a Surly Karate Monkey a bit ago :-)

Now if I can just keep my job in public education for another year, maybe
I'll find me that perfect bike!

I generally have a change of cloths and a towel in the Sackville Shopsack
I'm using on the front. It rides fine, and I love the convenience of the
basket for various oversized spur of the moment items. The big issue I have
with wheel flop is when I'm parked at an intersection I have to pay more
attention lest the bars flop over into an unfortunate part of the anatomy.
Another good reason for downtube shifters - the bar ends are more blunt and
a tiny bit lighter :)

Re: [RBW] Re: Fenders on Bombadil for off-road and mountain biking...

2009-12-17 Thread cyclotourist
I just put my mudguards/wheelbrows back on last weekend when it was
actually raining! I ride trails a lot with fenders on. These are dirt
roads/fire roads/forest roads mainly, not singletrack and not with a lot of
undergrowth to worry about. Gonna' ride some of them this Sunday with the
SoCal crowd!!!

yeah, I use fenders on dirt roads too. and they're great for riding
through puddles and slush on gentle single track and unpaved roads -
do that all the time. my idea of mountain biking is probably a little
 different, that's all.
