2009-12-27 Thread EricP
Will agree with David on this. Had a Flyer on my Atlantis and it
seemed too mushy. The Atlantis is set up with Albatross bars.
Combination of upright sitting and sprung saddle just got things too
bouncy. Oh, and the Atlantis has Big Apple tires. Comfy, yes. But
was really difficult to pedal smoothly with that combination.

Have a regular Champion on there now. Even that saddle seems too
soft. Hard to find the sweet spot to sit. Maybe that one is worn
out? Or it's indicating it's time to do some (minor) re-design on the
bike. The new catalog has me thinking. . .

2009-12-27 Thread Justin August
I have a pre-aged Flyer on my Soma DoubleCross set up with noodlebars.
I love it. I haven't used a B17 but in Philly I thank god for my 35c
Schwalbes and the sprung saddle every time I ride. For a while I had
one of the used Selle-Anatomica saddles that Riv was selling on there
but I moved that to my beater/fixed/cruiser.

I have a Velo-Orange Croissant saddle bag on mine, works pretty much
just fine.

It seems for a Bombadil you'll be gaining much and losing very little
considering you've already chosen a steel bike with double top tubes,
I'm assuming beefy wheels...etc. I'd grab one and try it out - either
for 60 bucks from Cyclotourist or from some place that has a guarantee
or somesuch. Ben's Cycles has a metric buttload of Brooks saddles on
sale at all times.

[RBW] Re: Year end summary and initial Bombadil feedback...

2009-12-27 Thread Justin August
You should check out the trails at Redwood Park in Oakland! Or get out
in the hills around Tilden. The East Bay has some of the best cycling!

I'm getting ready to leave for a family vacation in Ft. Lauderdale, so there
won't be any more riding for me this year unless I manage to do some

What a year this one has been, and I'm only talking about cycling; no other
serious stuff for now. After a very difficult cycling 2008, where the year
went by and I wasn't able to accomplish any of my personal cycling and
weight loss goals, 2009 was much better. I managed to get into a pretty
steady biking commute to work, either riding one way in the morning (12.5
miles) and taking Caltrain back home in the evening (4 miles+train) when I
wasn't traveling, which was pretty often in the second half of the year.

I discovered Rivendell and closed the year with an A. Homer Hilsen and a
Bombadil, having sold a Gunnar CrossHairs and a Cannondale F500 that just
couldn't fit me no matter how hard I tried. Still on the judgement table, an
almost brand new (100 miles or so) full carbon and 16.5 lbs Specialized
Roubaix SL2 with a combo of Sram Red components that I can't quite fit in
comfortably after riding the Rivendells. Waiting for the spring to see how
much I can get for it.

Managed to loose about 20 pounds (not continuously) over the 12 month span,
but regained about 2 - 3 pounds during the holidays.

I start the year full of excitement about continuing to commute regularly
(and overcome my resistance to ride in the rain), continue to lose weight
and becoming fitter now that I can ride pretty comfortably so I can start
introducing some longer rides (Ray must think I'm bluffing, but I really
want to ride with him from San Francisco to Palo Alto) and really hoping
I'll be able to join any local Rivendell rides as well as get started with
the newly (for me) discovered concept of the S24O.

 Now to the Bombadil report...

I've ridden the Bombadil with 29er knobby tires on mountain biking trails
twice, although I must say those trails are quite mild. Once in Arrastradero
Preserve in Palo Alto, and the second time in China Camp. Both times the
rides were a blast, and I was very surprised at how comfortable, compliant
and secure I felt on the Bombadil. I rode with Moustache handlebars and must
say that I really love them on the dirt. The trails were compact and the
Bombadil tracked beautifully. Over rocks and other rough spots, I just stood
on the pedals and flowed with the bike in a way I must say just felt
 perfect.

I then switched wheels and rode with 40mm Marathon Extreme tires on the road
and some dirt trails around Stanford (Lagunita). On the pavement, the bike
rolled very smoothly and quietly; there was no hint of noise from the tires
and they felt very smooth and with little rolling resistance. I never tried
the previous Marathon XT tires, but I must say these are great. Off road,
the bike handled perfectly and even while going through some short steep
climbs where I had to stand on the pedals to clear them, the bike never
hesitated nor the tires slipped. I'm seriously considering leaving those
tires permanently on the bike, as it seems the Bombadil is going to be my
bike for trail riding and not really technical mountain biking as I'll use
my dual suspension trail bike for the more technical riding, at least for
now. We'll have to see if I end up avoiding the dual suspension bike in
favor of the Bombadil or not. I may also try the Marathon Supremes in the
700 x 2.0 version, but am not sure about that yet.

Riding the Moustache bars on the road has produced some hand pain/discomfort
so I've been playing with both the tilt and the height of the bars to
address that. It seems I've finally got it to a point where the discomfort
is minimized, but all I've done are 1 hour rides these past few days so I
don't know how my hands would fare on longer rides on the road.

With its ultimate use goal as it appears to be shaping up, when I get back
from my family vacation, I'll put steel fenders on the Bombadil and report
back. I didn't quite like how the Cascadia fenders looked, so I didn't
install them and since they didn't have any safety releases as I had
expected, then there doesn't seem to be any point in keeping them. I'll
either return them or put them for sale if I can't return them.

So far, my best cycling highlight of the year, as you can all surmise, was
my discovery and introduction to the Rivendell philosophy of cycling, and to
its bikes. Being close to Walnut Creek and having the privilege of visiting
them, pestering them and asking lots of questions is like icing on a
delicious cake. They have been great with me and always put up with my
questions with a smile. The support I've found in this group complements the

Rene,

I use B-17s on my Rivedell's with drop bars and found that with
Albatross bars the Flyer is a nice saddle to have.

I have used the Flyer when touring with drop bars but really noticed

When using saddle bars with the Flyer, I loop the straps through the
bottom coil of the springs.

Re: [RBW] B-17 vs. Champion Flyer

2009-12-27 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I used a Flyer briefly on a mountain bike and found it more suited to a more
upright position that I favor even off road (I used Nitto Dirt Drops set
higher than drops on my road bikes). I also had to find a weird seatpost
with a dogleg in it to get the Flyer back far enough. I've since found that
fat (60 mm +) tires run at low pressures (sub 25; I go as low as 12 in
front, but that is for sand) are far, far better at bump mitigation. And
700c fatties of 65 mm run at low enough pressures are practically like
sitting on your sofa.

As for the road, I daresay that if you sit pretty bolt upriight, a Flyer
might help, but I find that saddle comfort is largely a result of proper
positioning, especially fore and aft: I use a rubber mallet to get my Flites
back all the way for optimum comfort. But then I like my bars lowish.I
can't understand why, for a normal road bike position -- even a touring bike
position -- a properly set up saddle would need springs.

Perhaps this is what you need, all 3 kg of it:

I use a flyer on my commuter with uprights.  I like it, as it takes just enough
of the rough stuff off.  I ride on 35s on the commuter, all pavement, of
course.  For a period of time I had it mounted on my Atlantis with uprights and
35s, and that was OK, too.  But, I briefly mounted it on my Quickbeam with
drops and did not care for it.  The flex of the springs was slight, but just
enough to constantly be changing what is for me a very narrow comfort setting
of the saddle tilt.  I like a B17 for dropped riding.

[RBW] Re: B-17 vs. Champion Flyer

2009-12-27 Thread eddie...@gmail.com
I like the Flyer a lot for certain bikes. If the bike already has a
cushy ride then it's probably overkill. I use the Flyer to smooth out
the kick from an otherwise stiff bike. or put another way, to soften
the ride. The spring action is rather subtle, however. After awhile I
don't notice it unless I hit a big hole, though if you ride behind
someone with one you'll see the springs flexing slightly as they
pedal.

My Bike Friday Pocket Rocket with 451mm rims and 28mm Schwalbe tires
-- pretty much the maximum width for my version -- rides much more
comfortably with the Flyer. I can stay on the saddle over rougher
offroad sections on my unsuspended Rawland dSogn. We also have one
installed on our tandem instead of a stoker suspension post and my
wife prefers it to the Thudbuster we had previously. It absorbs
smaller bumps and vibrations better (no stiction) and she just
unweights the saddle when I call out the large bumps.

Leather quality has been about the same as the B17 -- generally very
good, though my wife had one that quickly stretched out enough to be
unrideable and the dealer replaced it under warranty.

2009-12-27 Thread beth h
What Patrick said, the part about saddle position fore and aft.
applies.

That said, I prefer a sprung saddle for all my upright city riding.
When I built up my Xtracycle I installed a flyer, which was perfect
for the close, swept-back handlebars and the very upright position on
that bike.

I liked it so much that when I remodeled my Rivvy ('99 LongLow)
earlier this summer, I swapped out the old B-17 with the broken saddle
rail (which had prompted the remodel to begin with) and swapped in a
Flyer. The Flyer takes longer to break in because of the springs but
after a month of daily riding it was almost Just Right.

The only bike that has a B-17 left on it is my Drop-bar'd All-Rounder,
where a non-sprung saddle makes complete sense.

I've been riding a Swift for the latter half of this year and for me - which
includes my riding style, position on the bike and, um, shape - I'm liking
it a little better than the B-17. For me, it feels between the B-17 and
Swallow in terms of position - I tend to roll my hips a little more forward
and so the narrow saddles work out a bit better on longer rides.

The B-17 is good on my commute rig (under 20 miles), but it feels a little
too wide if I'm in the drops for extended periods.

The Swifts which I've seen seem to have thicker leather than the B-17s, but
that is a nonscientific sample, to be sure.

As far as paying more for a limited edition stamp and color I'd be
hard pressed to do so. You might check around for a shoe repair place that
can dye the leather, if you really want a specific look - might work out
cheaper. (Don't know what kind of stain it might leave on fabric...) But,
saddles live an inglorious life, and are mostly covered while doing so.

hope that's of some help,

Actually, I'd try something stronger. Blue loctite is for threads.
There's a green compound that fills larger gaps (and smells funny, I'm

Ray and everyone else -

Thank you. That's some very generous praise, and I really appreciate it.

Those members who made the initial shift to this group probably have heard
me say it before, but I feel it's important to define this group by what we
are, rather than that we do not want to be. When people take the time to
share photos and write about rides, it raises the signal level, and the
noise part tends to drop to nothing in comparison.

As a corrollary to that, I'd say that any efforts I've made don't mean squat
without the contributions of everyone else. With the way we can instantly
communicate these days, it seems that it's much easier to zap off a response
with less thought and care than we would if chatting on a ride, or enjoying
one another's company directly. Everyone here deserves thanks for taking
that small bit of time and attention to their posts to maintain respect and
civility.

I want to thank everyone who has contributed to the group, either through
posts or just reading along.

For the upcoming year, here's to grand vistas, great miles and the
conversation that happens along the way!

Re: [RBW] brooks swift saddle

2009-12-27 Thread JimD
I have a Swift on my custom Riv.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rasterdogs/3041950359/in/set-72157604146015375/

It works great for me and has become my favorite saddle.
These days I have my bars ~ 1 cm lower than the saddle.

For me the B-17 is a bit wide.

As far as the special edition goes I'd pass on that.
After being used for a year or so I'll guess it will look like a dark
leather saddle.
When I'm riding the bike I can't tell what color the saddle is.

Cheers,
JimD

Is the special edition worth the upcharge? I really like it b/c of
 the blue
 leather.

I've been riding a Swift for the latter half of this year and for me
 - which
includes my riding style, position on the bike and, um, shape - I'm
 liking
it a little better than the B-17. For me, it feels between the B-17
 and
Swallow in terms of position - I tend to roll my hips a little more
 forward
and so the narrow saddles work out a bit better on longer rides.

The B-17 is good on my commute rig (under 20 miles), but it feels a
 little
too wide if I'm in the drops for extended periods.

The Swifts which I've seen seem to have thicker leather than the
 B-17s, but
that is a nonscientific sample, to be sure.

As far as paying more for a limited edition stamp and color
 I'd be
hard pressed to do so. You might check around for a shoe repair
 place that
can dye the leather, if you really want a specific look - might work
 out
cheaper. (Don't know what kind of stain it might leave on
 fabric...) But,
saddles live an inglorious life, and are mostly covered while doing
 so.

 hope that's of some help,

[RBW] Re: B-17 vs. Champion Flyer

2009-12-27 Thread Rene Sterental
Wow! I have barely landed in Dallas on my way to Ft. Lauderdale, am
reading all the comments regarding my question on the sprung saddles,
see your offer and as I read through the thread I see someone else
already jumped at the chance!

I'm not sure if I'll like riding the Flyer as I have found I seem to
be more comfortable with a 45-55 degree back, and definitely do not
ride Albatross bars. Couldn't stand them when I tried them at RBW; my
hands hurt immediately.

When riding the Bombadil and placing my hands on the tips of the bars,
almost on the shifters, I feel quite upright and love it for cruising,
but my hands still hurt a bit.

I may end up trying instead the Marathon Supremes 700 x 2.0 and
playing with the lower air pressure to get the more cushioned ride
feel. I already get that feeling on the Extreme 40mm tires, but have
yet to play with lowering the air pressure to fully experiment the
differences.

Will have to do that with both bikes when I get back home in January.

I have a sprung B67 that I put on an Electra Townie I sold 2 years
ago. I couldn't stand the huge seat they come with and tried the B67
for a while until I sold the bike. That one I rode very upright, but I
think I never set the saddle correctly as my tail bone would hurt like
crazy after a short while. It also creaked a lot. I've kept the saddle
and may just retry it on the Bombadil just to see how the springs
feel. It's going to be too wide for how I ride the Bombadil, I'm
afraid.

Thanks for all the tips and feedback!

[RBW] Re: Silver Quickbeam bar tape

2009-12-27 Thread Dave Craig
I have the blue cloth tape as well. I think it is a great match for
the decals once it has been coated with clear shellac.

I also recommend using black hemp twine. I bought mine from a fabric
store (Joanne's House of Fabric). I made the twine a bit darker by
using a permanent marker on it before I shellac'd it. Lastly, I used
silver barend plugs - these looked much nicer than black velox plugs.

I think you're right about the shorter stem. Swap out that spare one I
sent you for something shorter - maybe a 9-10cm stem and see if it
comes back toward you a bit. You look a bit stretched out.

See if your LBS has a used stem bin and you can swap them in and out

I like this group so much because the members are accepting of biking
and posting styles other than their own. They have helpful,
constructive things to say, and as a result I watch what I say, too.
So I add my thanks to everyone else's: Thanks, Jim!

I think just the seat-tube Q would look great. Buena idea!

  Wow!

Are you sure you want to put decals on that ride?  It's absolutely
  gorgeous as-is.

  Congrats!

700x33 Jack Browns on a Ram/Rom make it the best road bike and turned me into a
Jack Brown preacher.

The canti-Rom and those tires are made for each other.

Looks like you've got it going well. I wouldn't be afraid to go bigger on
the tires, though. You've got good clearance in the frame, and more air
volume will go a long way towards more comfort on the ride.

Enjoy every bit of the journey!

Re: [RBW] The Evolution of Riv Road Bike Versatility

2009-12-27 Thread James Warren
But the interesting thing is that the Roadeo will not split the difference
tire-wise. I've raved about my Ram over and over, but a Roadeo outdoes it in
the tire clearance with fenders department. A Jack Brown with fenders can be
done on the Roadeo, but not the Ram. The Roadeo's going to be an amazing bike,
simultaneously more light and racey AND more versatile for tires and fenders.

I can't wait to hear more ride reports from Roadeo people.

Seems like the Roadeo is the logical next step in the evolution in
Rivendell's road bike thinking - and a nice way to split the
difference between the Riv Road and Rom/Rams.
