[RBW] lively, low rolling resistance 700C road/off-road tire?

2010-02-16 Thread Earl Grey
Hi,

I am running IRC Mythos XC Slick 42mm tires on my Sam, and am looking
for a dual purpose tire that leans a little more towards paved road
performance (let's say 75% road use, 25% dirt, but with some technical
stuff). The Mythos "Slick" is anything but slick. The center knobbies
are shorter, but of varying height, which creates a noticeable buzz on
pavement, though they grip great on hard dirt.

I want a lively tire with low rolling resistance, and I don't want/
need puncture protection (I hardly ever get flats, even on plain Jack
Browns off-road).

Does anyone have experience with the Marathon Cross versus the
Marathon Extreme? Seems the Extreme might be the way to go, but I
wonder how the Cross compares. Extremes are wider (40mm versus 38) and
folding, so what do the Crosses have in their favor?

Cheers,

Gernot

[RBW] Re: new bike day

2010-02-16 Thread William
Velo Orange has a nice $48 seatpost that they specifically made for
Brooks setback.

I agree with your assessment of the Tektro's being kinda wimpy, esp in
the rear. I was going to experiment with a different pad on my orange
56cm Sam. Otherwise, I have a set of Paul's I might put on it
instead.

thanks Mitch,

they are actually out of stock right now - i tried to buy one yesterday and
discovered that.. someone on the list has one for sale, but i've got a couple
of other options i'm considering..

a VO might end up on a stripped down build if i can find a used 58cm Quickbeam
or Atlantis frame, though ;)

A similar ride is happening in my neck of the woods - the Whistler
GranFondo - http://www.whistlergranfondo.com/

"A ride you never thought possible. One of the most scenic highways in
the world. Or a great excuse to see the Olympic cities of Vancouver
and Whistler. Whatever your motivation, the Whistler GranFondo is the
ride you've been waiting for.

This will be the first large scale, fully supported ride along the
newly upgraded Sea to Sky highway – Hwy 99 – from Vancouver to
Whistler. With breathtaking views of Howe Sound, challenging climbs
through the Coast Mountain Range and more downhill than you’d expect,
this ride will impress and inspire like none other."

[RBW] Re: new bike day

2010-02-16 Thread Earl Grey
Re. Tektro 720s: I have them on my Sam, and I think they are great.
Easy to set up, good modulation, good stopping power; they are awesome
at the price. If all you did was technical singletrack downhill, you
might want something with more mechanical advantage for less hand
strain after hours of braking, but for an all-rounder, they are
perfect. Functionally as good as my Campy high profiles, easier to set
up, but not as jewel-like, though perfectly fine looking, except for
the prominent and ugly-ish Tektro logo. :)

I have the VO seatpost on my 20 year old beater that needed more
setback with a Brooks, and it's a beautiful post that works great.
Would like to get a Nitto at some point, but I think this one has more
setback than any of the Nittos except the lugged "Wayback".

[RBW] Aww, "Amos"

I like collaboration, and I really like the name "Amos" for a certain
bike. I like roady bikes, I ride a Quickbeam, which suits me pretty
well, but fantasize about a dedicated Camper and a Randonneur, and I
really like bikes for the impecunious. There just aren't enough old
steel frames around here. Now, that steel fork upgrade! Yeah! Public
Service! I remember a beautiful young woman who lost her front teeth
and her smile in a front-end failure years ago, so this is bigger than
it might seem at first. That, and Smile Train. At least I can afford
to donate some cash and buy a t-shirt...

This VO seatpost is in the mail to me and should be here in a couple

If I like it I'll order another one for the XO-1 and Atlantis.

I give $250 to Smile Train, so Smile Train smiles

I buy an in-stock Bombadil, so I smile and Rivendell smiles

I get $187.50 credit towards the thing, and I get $200 worth of free

roughly about as accurate as other bike computers that just have a
barometric altimeter but no GPS capability.

In principle, Garmin could be using a proprietary algorithm that does data
fusion on GPS measurements, topo databases, and the barometric altimeter.
What they actually do, AFAIK, is not disclosed. However, my guess based on
observation is the models with barometric altimeter are mostly using that.

Re: [RBW] 59cm AHH fit questions

2010-02-16 Thread Anthony Castellino
I am your 'fit' twin...actually, I am 5' 9" and 3/4 depending on the time
between hair cuts...my PBH is 85. I ride the 57 AHH. I am lucky enough to
live close to Riv, so I stood over both the 57 and 59 as I too measured to a
59.

Both work...but, having been 15 years on 'racing' (hahahah, I a NOT a racer,
but I had to have a racing bike...love marketing!) bikes that were no doubt
too small for me, I felt a tad more at home on the 57...honestly, if my 57
was stolen today, and I drove to Riv to replace, and they only had a 59 in
stock and built up, I would buy the 59...

I will admit, that sometimes, when I am really trying to analyze my riding
position, usually when I find myself bored on my commute, feel a touch
cramped in the cockpit...perhaps a cm or 2 longer when I am out on the hoods
would be nice when I am on a long gradual (kind of like this sentence) into
the wind climb...

Finally, if the cost of 'new' would preclude or delay you from owning a Riv,
then BY ALL MEANS, get the 59...because both sizes work, the deciding factor
should be, how quickly can you get a Riv under your butt...like I said
above, if my bike was stolen and only a 59 was on the shelf, ready to go, I
would get the 59 to get me back on the bike sooner...even if only day...

Anyway, hope this helps...let us know what you decided!

Re: [RBW] Re: new bike day

2010-02-16 Thread andrew hill
thanks guys, i'm really enjoying it so far :)

i love the bullmoosies, though they aren't nearly as wide as i expected from
the description/pics on the Riv website, but they feel great - especially with
the woodies. tons of "leverage" - and extremely comfy setup.

unfortunately i won't be able to join y'all for the SoCal ride this weekend -
moving to a new apartment that day - but i'll do my best to make the next one.
got one scheduled for March yet? :)

a new seatpost is definitely in my future.. i'm a little surprised that
Rivendell doesn't stock/recommend an affordable one with more setback, since
they are fans of Brooks saddles and this seems to be a common issue with
Brooks. of course, not everyone is mostly torso, like me. i don't think i can
afford the $200 Nitto one, but the one Clyde suggests looks pretty good, and i
may have a line on another Nitto for much cheaper.

i'm not sure how i feel about the Tectro calipers yet - at first impression
they don't have nearly the stopping power i expected (compared to the sidepulls
on my late XO-1 or discs on my Gary Fisher) but it's mostly the rear brake that
seems rather anemic, so it may just need some breaking in, so to speak. i
think it's adjusted fine, but i'll tinker with it some if it doesn't improve in
the first 10 miles or so.

btw.. how long does it take to get un-moderated here? i've been posting for a
few weeks, and haven't tried to send one spam ;)

best,
andrew

[RBW] Re: 59cm AHH fit questions

2010-02-16 Thread PERydell
I am 5' 10" and have similar PBH and have a 59cm Hilsen.

With my shoes on I can stand over the bike and lift the front wheel
about 1 inch off the ground.

I have also ridden a 57. Unless I got directly off one and onto the
other I would never really be able to tell the difference.

[RBW] SRAM 500 brake levers

2010-02-16 Thread Jim M.
I've installed the SRAM levers on my Quickbeam and they are really
nice. They are just a bit wider (comfortably so IMHO) than Ultegra 9-
sp brifters. I really like the angled levers -- they make 2-fingered
braking more comfortable for me. The one thing I don't really like is
that they are not spring loaded. That's not a real problem but I have
gotten used to the snappy feeling of spring-loaded levers.

Agreed. I bought a 58cm Atlantis and over the last year I realized I
could have easily gone to the a 61cm atlantis and even a 64cm atlantis
if I knew I wouldn't want larger tires on it.

I think if/when I get another riv it'll be a 60->62cm bike of some kind.

I'm 5'11" with an 87.5" PBH. I've got a 59 AHH and maybe could have gone
one bigger (Jay recommended a 61 first, and 59 second). I have about an
inch or two depending on shoes and tires. I don't care about standover on
the roadish bikes (at least haven't had a reason to yet). I like riding a
larger frame - it's more comfortable to me, and there's some sort of a
psychology to it that works for me. For reference, most of the guys I work

mad.

p.s. The top tube makes a good leg rest at stop lights...

[RBW] Re: 59cm AHH fit questions

2010-02-16 Thread JoelMatthews
I would not worry about stand over so much as being able to get the
right leg extension handle bar reach with your preferred set up.

For instance if you want drops slightly below seat level, will you be
bending and reaching in a way that matches your preference and fitness
level.

If all is well with that, and the deal is good, the AHH is one of the
best bikes out there.

I¹m 5¹-8.5² and my PBH is 85 cm. My Riv custom is 60.5cm and my Blériot
(with 42mm Hetres) is a 59cm. I¹m really happy with both. I can¹t stand over
the custom barefooted, but luckily that situation hardly ever comes up.

If you were asking, I¹d say do it.

Re: [RBW] GPS vs web based mappings

2010-02-16 Thread Roy Yates
*It depends on what website you use. My understanding is that each
interpolates the same topo data base in its own way. Also, my impression is
that each website keeps tuning their algorithms in the hope of greater
accuracy. What's not clear is whether any of these sites get access to side
information or secondary databases *
*
*
*My own experience is with the Garmin 705 (which has a barometric altimeter)
and a VDO MC1.0+ which also has a barometric altimeter but no GPS. I've
found that the two tend to report results within about 10% of each other.
The VDO which has doesn't have GPS, tends to do more averaging of the
barometer readings. *
*
*
*As for websites, I've been using bikeroutetoaster.com and ridewithgps.com.
My experience was that a bikeroutetoaster often underestimated the vertical
feet in a route by 10-20%. On the other hand, ridewithgps tended to be
closer, and occasionally overestimate a little. It seems possible to me that
ridewithgps may well have added a correction factor to account for small ups
and downs? *
*
*
*In any case, both have been much better than my experiences with mapmyride.
However, I stopped using mapmyride 2 years ago, and it is very possible they
have changed their algorithms in the meantime.

[RBW] Re: Sam Hilbourne Tires

2010-02-16 Thread Earl Grey
Has anyone run 44s on their Sam? I am running 42mm IRC Mythos XC
Slicks (which are knobbies with a semi-slick center). They measure
42mm actual on Velocity Synergies, and I'd say there is good mud
clearance, but with 44s I am not so sure (though I am pretty sure 44s
would fit).

Looking forward to my pariI mean pair.

I checked out the prototype 1 on the shelf at Riv-HQ yesterday, and
the tread was CRAZY thin. I'm glad Kirk put a little bit more meat on

I guess I should buy that Bomba to accept these tires, too.

remember you wear shoes on the bike but not when measuring your pbh.

So your pbh + 1-2cm for your shoes == standover closer to 87cm.

So you should be fine.

I've never used a bicycle computer, so I can't speak to comparing its
data to web-based map service, but I can touch upon the GPS elevation
issue.

While it's true that the satellite constellation has filled out (and
is currently being rearranged from a 21+3 to a 24+3 configuration over
the next year or so), and GPS receivers are now running at least 12
channels or more, that accuracy has improved. Unfortunately, the
vertical accuracy will always lag the horizontal, because the earth
isn't transparent.

If you were to stand at a window with a GPS unit and look at the
'skyplot' view, you would notice that the receiver is picking up
signals from satellites out in front of you that you can see from the
window (if you could actually 'see' them), but that the ones behind
you are blocked by the building, which thus skews your calculated
location. If you then went outside and were standing in the middle of
a field, you could see satellites all around, then the calculated
location can be more precise.

The same thing is going on with elevations, but in that case, it's the
earth that's obscuring signals from satellites on the other side of
the earth. Because all of the satellites within view are being used
are all overhead, and not 'behind' you, there's a bit of a skew; the
smallest bit of error makes for a much larger change in elevation,
than you would get for horizontal calculations. If the satellites
that you're viewing/using are spread out around the horizon, then
you'll be better off than if they were all clustered directly overhead
- that would help minimize that error - but, that error will still be
greater than your horizontal.

FWIW, the maps that I usually make, I will pull my horizontal location
off the GPS, plot it on a topo, then use the elevations off the map,
in order to compare to other locations (that aren't GPS'd). [Unless, I
can actually GPS the other locations myself, too, in which case I'll
then emphasize their relative elevations over absolute elevations.]

With that said, yes, it's improving. I've got a few Trimble units
here in my office that are sub-meter, and I can pull off sub-foot with
them, given enough time (and even cm-level accuracy w/ a LOT of time
and post-processing); but, vertically, I wouldn't guarantee anything
more than sub-foot, and that's w/ a long residence time, not an
instantaneous value, as you would have if you're biking along.

(Hope that's not totally confusing)
