[RBW] Re: Heavy rider wheel issues
I see your 250lbs and raise you almost 20. When I first got my current bike add another 30. I started with a Rambouillet with older 105 hubs on 32 spoke Mavic M3's which were built for the 200lb PO who rode 27mm specialized tires. The rear rim lasted probably 3 months. Solution: keep the 105/32 rear hub, rebuild w/Mavic a317's (?) double butted rims w/DT 14guage spokes and brass nipples that have some loctite-type glue substance which keeps them solidly in place. I put 33.33mm Jack Brown tires @80 psi which are about as light as Grant recommends at my weight. I expect about 1500 miles off the rear JB, about 3k on the front. They have a Kevlar version if you need additional puncture protection. Front rim is the original Mavic M3 w/ the 33.33 JB @70 psi. I have about 2500 miles on these rims without any issues but would move to a Mavic 717 36 spoke on 105's if I did. Last point: go to your local wheel builder to get these done. You will get free trueing as well as his advice. Cost is probably $60 for the hub, $45 for the rim, $1/spoke and $50 for the build. Last thought. At 100miles/wk I was losing 10lbs/month no matter what I ate. Average ride was 25 - 40miles solo @17-17.5mph. Didn't take long. Bottom line: I think w/a decent hub and the right rim fabbed by a good builder and you will have more than you need for less than $200. Good luck. I ride a Trek hybrid, sitting bolt-upright. (By the way, this Trek is about as Riv'd up as any Trek could be. Actual Riv relevance: Later this year I'll also be riding a Hillborne and any counsel I receive will apply to it for sure; maybe/maybe-not for the Trek. Also, the riding I do is very much non-clubby, non-race-y, and non-trivial in distance; this seems to match up with Riv philosophy and thus seems appropriate for this group.) I use 700x35 tires on 32- or 36-spoke wheels at about 60 psi. I ride 70-100 miles/week 12 months a year (I bet that'll rise when I get the Hillborne), over half on limestone trail. I'm actually pretty easy on the bike in general, avoiding obstacles/rough path where practical, lifting the wheel and slowing down when I don't avoid the hazard. My problem is that I haven't gotten more than 1000 miles on any rear wheel without complete failure (cracked hub, bent axle) or the need for repair (hub overhaul, multiple spoke breakage, rim *way* out-of- true-or-round). The wheels I've used include some cheapies and some good ones. Some were better to use than others. But all were okay to use (until they failed :( ). More wheel details later. My preliminary question is: should I simply expect to have these problems every thousand (or two) miles? That is, will I likely have problems like these at that rate no matter *what* wheel I have? If so, then my plan will likely be to go for a value proposition instead of a reliability one. That is, I'll settle with a cheap wheel, always having a backup, knowing that I'll have to replace/repair/adjust more often than I'd like. That'd be okay, I guess... though it seems wrong in some profound way; after all, I've literally never *had* to replace any of my non-Pasela tires. I've put at least 3000 miles on my most recent set and still *could* use the originals the Trek came with. (I went through 4 Paselas in short order, with all of them failing in the same way with a sidewall eruption. Too bad. I liked the gum sidewall look.) However, if these wheel problems are avoidable (yes, yes... I know... losing 80-90 pounds would go a long way; let's assume that's not happening short-term), what kind of wheel will avoid them? Wheels I've used thus far include: --- Shimano RM60 (Alivio-ish?) hub / 32 2|1.8|2mm spokes / cheapish Alex rim - lasted about 1000 miles before breaking spokes, eventually on 3 rides in a row --- 105 hub / 36 2mm spokes / Sun CR18 rim - lasted maybe a little over 1000 miles before 4 holes-worth of drive-side hub snapped off of the hub body --- Deore hub / 32 2mm spokes / Sun CR18 rim - lasted maybe 400 miles before breaking spokes on 3 or 4 rides in a row (had 2 of these on the the theory that the first one was not prepped properly... 2nd one was no different with prep) - eventually I bent an axle on one of these, the other one (having been re-laced and re-trued and overhauled) is now my snow/ice wheel and will see little mileage --- XT hub / 36 2|1.7|2mm spokes / Velocity Synergy OC rim - lasted around 1000 miles before periodic ka-tink ka-tink noise appeared in the hub; am currently looking into whether this is a fatal problem or simply a maintenance issue Now, if the current XT-hubbed wheel's problems turn out to be readily solvable (adjustment of bearings, regreasing, something like that) then I'm happy to stay with this kind of wheel. Does anyone know if the Hunqapillar colors on the site are the final colors? The last I read, they were thinking of offering two options: red panel/ headtube and orange panel/headtube. As for the strength of the Sam Hillborne, here is what Rivendell Reader #41 (which is free to download) said when introducing the Sam Hillborne: --- The Sam may be even more versatile than the AHH, because the tubing is slightly thicker (same gauge as the Atlantis), so it more suited to loaded touring. Homer Hilsen. -- I'm not sure what that fork comment is referring to (clearance? tubing?). I've read that the Atlantis tubing is butted .9/.6/.9. And the same Riv Reader that introduces the Hillborne has an article about the Bombadil. The article on the Bombadil says the tubing is .1 thicker than the Atlantis, so that would make the tubes on the Bombadil 1.0 millimeter thick. The article also says the Bomadil's down tube and double top tubes are straight gauge (no butting). The Hunqapillar is described as having Bombadil stout tubing in the main tubes, which presumably means the top and down tubes (and that might also be the case for the down tube as well). In any case, the Hunqapillar has 1.0 mm tubing, and the Sam Hillborne and Atlantis have .9 mm tubing. The Atlantis is recommended for fully loaded touring. Therefore, it seems like the Sam Hillborne is a pretty stout bike. Also, are you aware that the double top tube design of the Hunqapillar has morphed into something different than depicted on the website? I recall you mentioning it once back in your blog days. I just assumed you sold it. Pacenti has some potentally great 650B tires about to ship. Get your order in soon. Re: [RBW] Guess I don't get down to the basement much
For a moment there, I thought we lived in the same house. I, too, have a box in my basement that contained a Bleriot recently purchased from another list member. Mine is built, however, and I have put about 50 miles on it since receiving it last Tuesday. I also wanted to experience the 650B thing, whatever that is. I read on this forum how wonderful the 650B ride is, and am curious what that means. The bike rides great. Quite comfy, but so are the other Rivs. It has drops and bar-ends. I am awaiting another parcel from VO that contains brake levers and grips, then my plan is to replace the Nitto Noodles with Albatross and thumb shifters -- also a first for me. My Bleriot came with a Brooks Flyer (sprung). The only thing to report so far is that I learned very early on how important it is to keep that inside pedal up when turning at any significant speed. Also, when I stop, I can easily place foot on ground. On my 700c Rivs, that's always a toe stand if I stay on the saddle. So, that aspect is more comfortable. [RBW] Silver Shifter Adjustment
Between my wife and I, we have four bikes with silver shifters, two DT and two BE. The DT shifters can be set with a very light touch and hold that position without any loosening and skipping. However the two BE need to be tightened down to a point where the shifting is much stiffer, and sill I find after a few days of riding the D ring will loosen a bit and the chain will jump gears. [RBW] Re: Pasela 35/37 or Marathon Racer 38?
You may have bought already but my four JB greens measure between 34 and 35mm the two most broken in being 34.8 and 35.1, I am not sure you are gaining anything with the Paselas. I have been looking at the spec chart for the Racers too, but too cheap to pull the trigger, based on ETRO the 38 racers should be 40mm wide. I have found the schwalbes measure true to stated ETRO data not what is on the box at times. Proportionally it should be like moving up from Rolly Pollys to JB, the 38 racers are the next step as far as I can see. For the moment it is JB green for me. Rob On Apr 21, 2:15 am, Earl Grey earlg...@gmail.com wrote: I should have mentioned that durability is not an issue for me, and neither is flat protection. I just want something that won't wash out in deep sand as easily, and still be really nice on the road where I ride 70-80% of the time. For dedicated offroading, I have 42mm IRC Mythos XC Slicks, which do the job very well and still are decent on the road. On most of the skinwall tires I have had, the sidewalls turned threadbare (due to UV/ozone, I assume) before the tread wore out, and I'd much rather have that happen but have a supple tire than have a bomb-proof tire that feels dead. So I'll probably give the regular Marathons a miss. :) I am about ready to order the 35 Paselas, because I have the sneaking suspicion that the 38 Marathon Racers are actually skinnier than the 35 Paselas, given that the 42 Supremes run 37.5 according to rivbike. [RBW] Re: cranks: ramps and pins v. none
To answer two questions at once. Indexed shifting a triple is more trouble than its worth. It will need more adjustments and offer less trim finesse. So, skip the indexing and the ramped rings. I run friction shifters and good, but no name LBS silver unpinned rings( 48/34/26) on a DaVinci triple crank and it shifts fine. The only time I ever have a problem is when I have waited too long to drop into the granny. About the gearing. I am considering switching one of bikes (Rambouillet) from a triple to a 44/30 double with an 11x28, 9 spd cassette. This will give the same top gear as my 48x12 and only one gear less on the bottom 30x28 instead of 26x27. One downside I can see to this is that the 11 will probably wear out pretty quickly. If that does happen I think I will move the cassette to a bike with a triple and lock out the 11. Also, the jumps - 12-14-16 - are a little bigger than the 12x27 spacing - 12,13,14,15,17. The only objection I have to triples is the extra work cleaning them. I ride a lot of dirt roads and tired of pulling the whole thing apart (especially the XD with the hidden bolt) to clean the middle ring. Re: [RBW] Re: Pasela 35/37 or Marathon Racer 38?
I've used both the 35mm Paselas and the 38mm Marathon Racers on the Atlantis. I actually wore out the tread on the Paselas and never had any problems with the side walls. Both ride nicely. I would say that the Racers ride a bit smoother; probably just due to the slight increase in volume, but it could have something to do with the casing material as well. I don't know if I'd say that the Racers have more tread than the Supremes. The tread pattern is really shallow and they almost function as a slick. That said, I've ridden the Racers on gravel and they perform well. The Racers *seem* to be wearing a little better than the Paselas so far. I'd say that I like the Racers better but they're considerably more expensive than the Paselas too. Interesting, my 6 month old JB Greens measure 33.5mm on Synergies. Hey there, Does anyone have experience with the Velo Orange Novatech Dynamo hub? At $50, it seems like a good value. [RBW] Re: Bullmoose on a Hillborne
Wow. There is alot of great info here. So the Hillborne is much tougher than I originally though. As far as the double top tube on the Hunqapillar...I typically ride a 53 frame which means I would need the 48 Hunqapillar (if that's what I go with) which would not have the double top tube anyway. Tough call..the Hunqa looks GREAT built up that way on the site but an orange hillborne with big wheels and Bullmoose bars would probably look equally great. On Apr 21, 8:28 am, happyriding happyrid...@yahoo.com wrote: On Apr 21, 5:14 am, Johnny Alien johnnyal...@verizon.net wrote: Hmmm...it seems like it is not a crazy idea at all then. I now have options! With AHH clearance, Atlantis tubing gauges, and a fork that splits the diff, you can think of it as halfway between the Atlantis and A. The second top tube is most likely going to angle down and join the seat tube in the middle of the seat tube. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Wind!
A Sam Hill with big, boxy Axiom Panniers and a big, boxy Ostrich bag is a barn door in our spring winds. I just rode 8 miles in the hooks straight south into a southerly 28 g 35. This builds patience and strength of character. The Axioms -- half price at AE Bike, $44 -- are big, drape-over Dutch-style shopping panniers, just one big empty space on each side with no annoying side pockets, zippers, compartments or cinches: just good old fashioned emptiness, big enough with room to spare for a full paper grocery sack, each; and a fitted flap with two, simple fastek buckles. I'll take photos when I get the attachments for my new Canon. Probably not up to touring, but better than my Ortleib Packers for shopping. Oh, and big bar bags act like wind rudders in gusty sidewinds; keep a firm grip on your bar! -- Patrick Moore Albuquerque, NM For professional resumes, contact Patrick Moore, ACRW at resumespecialt...@gmail.com (505) 227-0523 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. OK, this can get me in trouble. Keep in mind this is MY option. YMMV of course. Rich crossed US before (he is talking about doing it again btw), he knows touring bike, and what kind of wheels you need. He also has a tandem, xtracycle and other all rounders type of bike. So he knows touring and what to make a wheel last. Len used to race, tubulars world. Currently his Della Santa is Dura Ace 10s with Downtube index shifter. I can say all my Rich wheels NEVER has a problem before, has not true them once, no broken spokes. Some of the road in SF can be a little rough. I also have wheels Len build, a set of Campy Centuar hub with FIR Tour rim, he trued them once after 10 years. The nipples are turing green but I plan on riding them until something break. He build a Chorus/OP wheel for me, it So, IMHO, either one can build you a set of wheels that last a long time. They come from different background but their wheels last for me. For ref. I weight 165 and most of my wheels are 32 spokes, a few 28 and a few 36. [RBW] Re: fatter tires for 26 wheels
I second the 1.5 Marathon Racers. I run them on my Atlantis in NYC. When I first got the bike I was running 1.5 inch Paselas and they felt slow. I switched to 1.25 T-Servs. I liked them but somehow wanted something cushier. The Racers feel very fast and cushier. I'd be curious to try the 1.5 Paselas again to see if I was fair to them. The Racers have flatted on me a couple of times while i never ever got a flat with the T-Servs. On Apr 20, 6:56 pm, Tim McNamara tim...@bitstream.net wrote: On Apr 20, 2010, at 3:35 PM, Beth H wrote: Mojo gjtra...@yahoo.com wrote: I would like to echo Patrick's thoughts. Beth, Patrick, and I are all riding Rivendell 26ers, with higher trail than the Kogswells used in the BQ tests. I am not an expert on bike gemometry. That said, I keep wondering if there is a correlation between wheel size and frame size that changes the ride quality as well? I've mostly heard responses here from guys who ride much bigger frames than I do. Would a larger frame (and longer chainstay lengths, and bigger everything else) change the ride quality that much? Would it change the tire choice substantially? It sounds like it's up to the individual rider, but I remain curious. Obviously, a 1.5 Pasela seems to been a good solution for me, but my frame is a 53cm c-t (55cm c-c top tube). How would this be for someone who rides a 60cm frame? Would it make a difference at all? Mine (1996) is a 59.5 with a 59 cm top tube. So the top tube is about 4 cm longer than yours. I don't know if the chainstays are longer, but even if they are the same the wheelbase would be maybe 4 cm longer, depending on the front geometry. If the chainstays are longer, then my wheelbase might be longer still. All other things being equal, a bike with a longer wheelbase will be more stable. I suspect a small/short top tube, low-trail bike with really short chain stays and skinny hard tires would be like riding one of those bikes with two wheels that steer. The best handling bike (for racing, back when I raced) I ever rode is my Ritchey with 700 x 23 Michelin Super Course slicks. It had the perfect balance of stable and nimble for racing. Now that I don't race, I still ride it but not as much. I prefer slightly fatter tires and a bit more stability at the expense of some nimbleness; the Ritchey will fit 25s and I might be able to squeeze in 28s, but it doesn't handle as nice with the bigger tires. I ride the Riv A/R most of the time and my homebrew 3 speed the almost all the rest of the time. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: cranks: ramps and pins v. none
Good point about constantly needing the in between gears. The problem is I don't know where that is for a touring bike. I only have a road bike, which is set up with a 53x39 and 13-29, which works well for me in all types of terrain. I was thinking about the possibility of coupling the pending Velo Orange Gran Cru crank ($125), which is a 46x30 double, with a Rivendell/Shimano 12-36 9 speed cassette. That would result in a lower top end than a 53x13 (110.1 v. 103.5). Any comments on whether that is practical? Are doubles just not used for touring bikes? Re: [RBW] Re: Bullmoose on a Hillborne
I'll say that my Hillborne, with 40 Maraton Supremes, rides like a tank. A really expensive tank, with amazing suspension. The Deore XTs and Mavic A719s and 36h lacing might have something to do with that, too. I'm 200+ and typically ride with a timbuktu and a left pannier, lock/cables, etc... haven't ever felt a more glossy ride from a bike, though i can still feel the road perfectly, if that makes any sense. because it's so sturdy i do find it's much more important to unweight the seat on this bike or i get bounced, but that's more about my riding skills than anything. -andrew On Apr 21, 2010, at 2:07 PM, Johnny Alien wrote: Wow. I now have options! With AHH clearance, Atlantis tubing gauges, and a fork that splits the diff, you can think of it as halfway between the Atlantis and A. The second top tube is most likely going to angle down and join the seat tube in the middle of the seat tube. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: cranks: ramps and pins v. none
Hap, Loaded touring bike: you're probably gonna want that triple AND a big cassette in the rear - unless you don't mind resting or walking (Kent Petersen's 24 inch gear) when you totally bonk on that big climb. On my AHH country bike/sport tourer with a light load: I LOVE my TA 46-30, Simplex SLJ up front, 12-27 Ultergra/Dura Ace rear. I live and ride in the Cascade Foothills, and can think of only one occasion where I've used the lowest gear. I occasionally use my second lowest gear, but spend most of my time in the big ring on the rolling hills. It's by far my favorite gearing setup, and I've tried (and have) a lot of different setups. However, I don't think this would be ideal for a long tour with a heavy load. WRT the 46-30 and the 12-36 rear: it might work okay, might even work well. I have a feeling the trick may be finding the right front derailleur, and I'm thinking something from the 70's or 80's with a wide cage. I first tried a modern FSA compact for my Hilsen setup, and never could get it dialed in right (rubbing problems, and some shifting problems.) The old Simplex SLJ doesn't appear to have the correct radius for the 46T ring, but it works great! Trial and error can be fun - especially when you create that winning combo, but it can also be frustrating and expensive. Good luck!
