Did you lower the front derailleur when you made the change? How is Q a property of the crank? Wouldn't the bottom bracket that is necessary to allow the crank to clear the chain stays determine the Q? Or do some cranks only fit on certain narrower bottom brackets? It is a function of both BB length and Crank design. Many modern curving crank designs fit further out on the BB than say, a TA Cyclotourist or the White Industries VBC. [RBW] Re: cranks: ramps and pins v. none
The length of spindle you use should be driven entirely by chain line. Velo Orange says that the Gran Cru will be 'about 139mm' in Q- factor. That means that when you pick the right spindle length for chainline, the Q-factor will be about 139mm. They also throw in that is 'the narrowest ever'. So, anybody who wants to run that crankset should make sure their frameset is among the narrowest ever, so they can choose the right spindle for chainline. If you put the narrowest ever crankset on a wide chainstay frame, like the Bombadil, your crankarms will hit the chainstays. You'll probably have to use a spindle that is 8mm longer on both ends to clear the stays. Doing that will foul up your chainline, probably badly. You might not even be able to use the largest cog or two in the small ring. You are correct to point out that if people choose to use whatever spindle with whatever crankset, that the Q-factor is not an intrinsic property of the crankset at all. It is a property of the combination of spindle and crankset. When crank manufacturers or retailers state Q- factor, they are assuming you are going to use the right spindle length for chainline, which is what you should do if you can. [RBW] RBW HQ visit today. Hunqa news
I dropped by RBW HQ this morning to do several things: Buy a couple books See which Sackville bags my laptop will fit into Check to see if the 54 Hunqapillar is there and built It was almost a 100% productive visit. I got my books. My laptop fit into both the Saddlesack Medium and the Slickersack (I bought the Slickersack). Turns out I still was carrying a credit that I had applied to some bits that I didn't buy, so I got the books and the bag almost for free. The highlight for me, though, was that the 54 Hunqapillar was there (I have one on order). It was not built yet. It didn't have decals or a headbadge on it yet. The orange is a much duskier earthtone than the Construction Pumpkin headtube of the well-documented 58. I stood over the 58, and it was right up there clearance wise (My PBH is 87). I probably could run a 58 if I wanted to. Keven allowed me to spec the build for the 54, which was flattering and intimidating at the same time. I'm leaning towards using a Moustache bar for mine, and the other 3 Hunqas already have bullmoose, noodle and Albatross, so I told Keven to set up the 54 with a Moustache. I'm also planning on using V- brakes, and I think that's natural to consider if a frame does not have a rear stop brazed on, so I told Keven to build the 54 with V- brakes. I left the rest (tires, saddle, shifters, bar tape) to his discretion. I took a couple photos of the 54 frame, they are on my flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/45758...@n04/4563303985/ Keven said that the final color scheme has not been determined (which shade of orange, or the dark red, etc). He also said that Dave and Bob are changing up the decals (no clue how much). The final prototypes and the production units WILL have cantilever braze-ons, which means my final build (which includes V-brakes) will be somewhat less clean. I'll think of some way to make that work (like a rear light mount) and I'll be happy with the option to cleanly run cantilevers later. I'm looking forward to having a really cool bike. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: RBW HQ visit today. Hunqa news
Sorry to double reply. Keven did say that one more round of prototypes (final prototypes) will be coming in late May. The most important change is that they are rolling out the stays for more tire clearance. I gotta have my 60's! For those of you whose entire perception of the universe hinges on the angle of the 2TT dangle, I expect those will be our first look at the final 2TT configuration as well. If those prototypes are perfecto, then July is still in play. Am I the only one who sees that going to a diagonal 2TT involves zero extra work? The head tube and seat tube are parallel. That means that when you go to braze in the 2TT, you use the identical tube, with the identical lugs, with the identical length and the identical miter cuts. You just flip it over. Parallel lines. Easy peasy. On Apr 29, 2:06 pm, cm chrispmur...@hotmail.com wrote: Was there a final verdict on the diagona-pillar vs. the straighta- pillar? I cant wait to see the final version-- they look amazing. [RBW] Re: cranks: ramps and pins v. none
A simple reason triple are great for touring is redundancy in gears. Use Mike Sherman's gear chart, and you'll get a good idea what a high range double will be like shifting. http://home.earthlink.net/~mike.sherman/shift As stated ,low Q cranks will be a problem on many touring bikes. Use a longer axle and your chainline will be poor. It's best to pick a crank for your frame that is as close to the original intent as possible. Try fitting a Grand Cru crank on a Bomabadil .. you won't! . not without a unusable chainline. I still like half-step plus granny 7 speed drivetrains. [RBW] FS: moustache bar and an only tangentially Riv-related bike
A few items as I'm trying to clean out my garage: 1- Dimension moustache bar. This seems to be a pretty accurate knock off the Nitto bar, but it's been a while since I rode the Nitto version, and thus I can't say for sure. Anyway, I didn't like this any more than I liked the Nitto moustache bar I had years ago, so maybe it is accurate. 25.4 clamp. The only odd thing is the diameter was just a bit too small to accept bar end shifters, so I Dremeled out the right hand side a bit to run my 1x9 setup. $15 OBO (shipping not included) 2- Salsa Casseroll single speed complete bike, 59cm Not a Riv model, but it does share many values with Riv models: - long reach brakes for fat tires (comes with 37mm Continentals) - steel - low BB drop (76mm) - lots of eyelets for fenders and such - long dropouts for lots of single speed gear choices (or you can run gears) But, - TIG welded - straight, unicrown fork - threadless fork (although some Riv models do this) - designed by a guy in MN, not Walnut Creek Think of it as something to tide you over while waiting for the SimpleOne... Anyhoo, it's in excellent condition, basically like new. I'm just trying to downsize my fleet, and this has too much overlap with my Cross check. The build is the stock build as listed on the Salsacycles.com website. $450 OBO, buyer to pay shipping. [RBW] Repairing a puncture in Schwalbe Marathons
I had the misfortune of catching a small nail in my rear 700 X 33 Schwalbe Marathon Supreme today, and I was wondering if it's possible to safely ride on this for a good long while with a tube patch over the puncture. I've switched on my pair of Jack Brown's, but I'm wondering if the $65 tire can be safely salvaged for a while. I put air in it and the pressure didn't seem to change after an hour. So I'm basically wondering if the tiny hole in the tread would serve as a weak spot that would get worse and worse, or could this be sorta like a car tire where a repair is safe for a long time, rather than replacement. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Nitto Highrider front rack vs. Big Front Rack vs. Low Riders
It sure does! You are carrying rear panniers in the front, right? Does it affect the handling of the bike in any signficant way? [RBW] Re: Nitto Highrider front rack vs. Big Front Rack vs. Low Riders
Rene yes they are technically rear panniers..but the ortlieb classic rears are not that big. the bike takes off a little wonky but almost instantaneously as momentum is gained the whole bike solidifies and it feels as if I'm driving a locomotive. That is when the bags are truly over-loadedotherwise I hardly notice the rack or a modest load. yes, the lower (middle) horizontal bar is where you'd put any size panniers. this leaves the very large platform to hold a basket or crate or sleeping pad or sleeping bag or whatever. this is the setup I'll be using on my NYC to Montreal trip with a saddlesack LARGE in the bag resting on a Nitto top rack ...to carry tent, sleeping pad , etc. and the Nitto Big front in front to carry two large panniers and sleeping bag, etc on the platform. j -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
