It's a wash. Outside mounting allows a wider flap, theoretically
stopping more of the splash when hitting puddles.
Inside mounting follows the tire radius, reducing the trajectory of a
splash.

> Which is more "classic" (as done in the past)?

Leather flaps look more "classic", but supposedly weren't used much in
the past. More typical were thinner, rubber mudflaps, mounted inside
the fender from what I have seen and read.

> Which is preferable?

For a thick, leather mudflap such as the VO; I think you'll be better
off mounting it on the outside of the fender. The thick, leather
ridge would accumulate debris and would also lessen tire/fender
clearance when mounted inside the fender.

[RBW] Re: New-to-me Quickbeam frame/fork pics

2010-06-10 Thread Lee
Hi all. I just wanted to follow-up with pics of my "finished"
Quickbeam. I expect it'll undergo some tweaks over the next month or
two. Right now, I'm using it as my commuter, but I hope to start
taking it out for some long rides pretty soon. It's in 650B-mode with
an old set of Nifty Swiftys. I have it geared 41x16/19 for 67/56 gear
inches on the freewheel side, and 41x16 on the fixed side. I've ridden
it free for two commutes and fixed for one. It'll be interesting to
see on which side the coin lands. I find both styles of riding fun. My
main focus right now is getting a feel for the geometry and dialing in
the fit.

The only problem I have with it is after getting into work, I spend
the first half-hour thinking about the ride in--okay, maybe more than
a half-hour.

Thanks for everyone's input!

[RBW] Re: Mudflaps - inside fender or outside fender?

2010-06-10 Thread Mike
There was an article in an old issue of Bicycle Quarterly about
mounting leather flaps inside the fender. This is for folks using
aluminum fenders. You can check their back issue index for finding the
article. But with a VO flap or Riv Sackville flap it needs to go
outside. I have the VO flaps on my commuter, they're great. I like the
looks of the Sackville more and they're lighter and have the
reflective strip on them.

Re: [RBW] Re: Tektro CR720s on a Quickbeam

2010-06-10 Thread clyde canter
I replace the front brakes on my Hillborne with the 720s a while back in an
attempt to eliminate loud squealing I was getting with Tekro Oryxes. I got
the squeal squelched but I find the braking power somewhat less than the
Oryx, which doesn't make sense, as everything I've heard gives wide profile,
high straddle wire cantis more advantage over the narrower ones. It's not a
huge difference, but it definitely resulted in somewhat less stopping
power. I am so happy to be rid of the squeal/ honking and so weary from
swapping pads that I dare not mess with it any further.
I personally like the look of the Oryx brakes much much better.

Re: [RBW] Re: Mudflaps - inside fender or outside fender?

2010-06-10 Thread rswatson
I use inside mounting. Am I the only one? I zip-tie the leather flap
to an appropriately sized piece of plastic (credit card works great)
and "snap" the plastic bit inside the metal fender between the rolled
edges. Secure, quick release, no fender modification needed. Zip tie
is just for insurance. Friction usually holds it between the plastic
card and the fender just fine.

Cheers,
Ryan

[RBW] Re: Mudflaps - inside fender or outside fender?

2010-06-10 Thread amoll68
Just piling on to concur with what's been said. Generally, I think the
thick leather needs to be mounted outside for clearance reasons (in
most applications.) Looks fine, and works great. If you've got plenty
of clearance, inside mounting would be fine, too.

Thin rubber mounted inside seems to be more classic/traditional. It
does look good, too.

The also sell arm cooler wings, which are simply the arm coolers with an

2010-06-10 Thread Esteban
I'd worry about the supple sidewalls rather than the tread. My plan
is to use them for events or times when I want to maximize
performance, and use Hetres everyday.

All this being said, the old reliable CdlV is a great all-around tire,
and it will fit the Riv 650B bikes and most conversions no problem.

I wonder why Grand Bois backed off the 38mm Hetre. It would have sold
well - long wear, very fast, comfortable ride, and the colors!

[RBW] Re: Pari-Moto Ride Report

2010-06-10 Thread JoelMatthews
> I'd worry about the supple sidewalls rather than the tread. My plan

> performance, and use Hetres everyday.

Except that I really do not do events, this is my plan as well.

For everyday and light touring use on my soon to be built Rando style
bike, I am building wheels with a Royce rear hub, regular Son front
matched with a set of 40h Mavic M-2 rims I got from Jan Heine. These
rims will wear Hetres as long as the tires hold out.

For sunny Sunday afternoon riding around town and on the local trails
I have a set of 36h Rigida Sphinx rims on which I will mount the Pari-
Motos.

Currently, I am agonizing about which hubs to use for the Rims. I
have a NOS Maxi-Car rear hub I could match with a SonDeluxe if I want
to keep light options. Or, I could use a nice NOS set of Campy Nuovo
Hubs currently displayed in my living room. Lately I wonder if it
might not be fun to get matching set of Royce hubs.

The Maxi-Car SonDeluxe seems most logical, as the bike will be wired
with dynamo lights. It is just that I cannot think of why I would
want the Pari-Motos on for night riding.

The bcd is 110/74, which suggests that one could use smaller inner

2010-06-10 Thread rperks
These are very interesting as the rings seem to stack inward from the
110 PCD holes and the 74 PCD holes may be in the same plane as the
middle ring. If this in indeed the case it would open up the door for
some very very wide double setups. I wonder if and when we may see a
set of these in the flesh. Also still wondering why so much re-
engineering is going on when the Ritchey Logic Compact cranks are/were
so nice. Does anybody out there know why Sugino does not just bring
back something like the old Ritchey or Suntour cranks? I figure the
forging dies are gone by now, but the patterns were near ideal.

Do you plan to have two sets of wheels, or will you be removing and
installing tires? I am currently in the midst of mystery rim-side flat
tire hell, and I'm having trouble imagining swapping tires without
actually being compelled to do so.

[RBW] Your Favorite Handlebar Bag

2010-06-10 Thread Rob Harrison
The one remaining thing I need to complete my Saluki ("Sure, sure" you
say!) is a handlebar bag. What's your favorite, and why?

I will use it on increasingly longer rides in variable weather (I'm in
Seattle!), carrying a Panasonic GF1...or a Voigtlander Vitessa on my
film days...jacket, rain-chaps, sandwich, banana, and so on, and
possibly an S24O later in the season. I have a Berthoud 786 saddle
bag, which is large enough for tools and an extra tube, etc. and could
be used in conjunction with a smaller bag up front, or left at home if
I have a larger bag. Having sold my motorcycle, cost is not so much of
a consideration. It's going on a 62cm Saluki on which I have the bars
set quite high, so there is approximately six feet of room between the
Mark's rack and the handlebars I'm not married to the Mark's rack,
if a smaller bag hanging off the bars will work.

For summer day-long rides something small could work. Just need room
for food and camera. For the rest of the year, I'll need additional
space for clothing.

I've been eyeing these larger ones: Inujirushi, Acorn boxy rando,
Berthoud 28, and these smaller ones: Berthoud 192, Acorn medium
handlebar bag, Sackville BarSack and Ortlieb Ultimate 5. Being rain-
proof is a serious consideration, 'cause as you know it rains eight
months of the year here. A rain cover would do fine though, because it
does NOT rain for the other four months. :) I like the idea of waxed
canvas, as long as it'll keep the camera dry.

Here's the bike: Fenders arriving tomorrow, according to UPS!

Thanks for your consideration.

Rob in Seattle

RE: [RBW] Your Favorite Handlebar Bag

2010-06-10 Thread Larry Powers

The bag I find the most functional is my Berthoud Handlebar bag that sits on a
small front rack and uses a decaleur. These come in sizes based on the height
of your bars from the rack. I purchased one with leather straps and buckles
but I would recomend one that uses elastic and hooks on all the pockets. It is
much easier to access the pockets while riding with the elastic. I have a Boxy
Baggins and and a C'dale bag that mounts just to the bars. As the amount of
weight goes up the Berthoud bag impacts the bike handling the least. I am
using this bag on my Rambouillet and find it works very well. There are three
factors that may account for this, the bag and therefor the weight is lower,
the bag sits closer in to the bars and most of the weight is supported by the
rack. I will be adding a Decaleur and rack to my Atlantis and this bag
combined with my Hoss should make for a good minimalist touring rig.

And it's a lot cheaper, too. $80 cheaper. I have both of these, like
you; mine are the GB28 and the 2886. Both are very well made, both work
very well, both look great. The Berthoud bags are a first class
product.

My thinking as well. I probably would not have bought the Pari-Motos
had I not always planned to have a second set or rims.

Failed to count on the difficult hubs decision I would have to face ;)

Re: [RBW] Re: SoCal River Ride?

2010-06-10 Thread andrew hill
update on the ride.. i did it :)

here are some pics of the Sam on the ride, fully kitted out, including rider:
http://salamander.net/stage/LARiverRide2010/

the ride itself was pretty awesome. first several miles were through the hills
of Griffith Park, and then onto the LA River bike path.. then a handful of mile
through downtown LA.. back on a river bike path.. to Long Beach Aquarium, then
through into Orange County (Seal Beach).

here is a route map:
http://tinyurl.com/232chez

the only problems I had were with my right knee having increasing issues
starting around mile 50.. after about 20 more miles i figured out it was due to
having not enough float in the clip-in pedals on that side. i thought ahead
and had brought some light canvas shoes (and had pedals with a flat, non-spd
side) so swapped to those shoes for the last 25 miles and found myself
sprinting the last portion after my knee freed up and stopped hurting.

the Sam performed flawlessly - an extremely comfy if somewhat slow ride - it
took me about 8 hours to do the whole thing... a lot of that slow time was due
to meandering around downtown LA and urban Seal Beach with lots of stops and
starts, lights, etc.. but i felt tall and sporty, especially compared to the
elephants-on-tricycles look that 95% of the riders on their tiny road bikes
had.

everyone loved it too - i got dozens of "nice bike!!" comments.. and a few "wtf
is that?!?". people were very impressed with my emcorkened bar ends, too :)
one of the booth mechanics who helped me adjust the indexed shifter (which was
skipping a ring) wondered if i'd restored a classic.

i also saw another Sam on the River path - not doing the ride, but he had come
down from downtown to take advantage of the nice day.. though i saw him with
the bike up-ended and fixing a flat.. i'm forgetting his name - Matt? - he is
on this list, though a lurker.. but it was funny to see another Sam. i didn't
see ANY other Rivs, though someone told me there was yet another Sam on the
course ahead of me.

sooo.. my first Century down. not my last, though i might carry less on the
bike next time or swap in a lighter wheelset/tire setup.

best,
andrew

2010-06-10 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Y'all make me envious; I'm stuck here in hot and windy Albuquerque. But I
did a 23 mile hilly ride (well, it's hilly by my standards; MLK is 1 mile
long) today on the Riv commuter to pick up some tires (thanks, Ryan).
(Inbound via RG bike trail/mountain/ MLK/Copper; return via
Washington/Diversion Channel bike path/ Commanche/Griegos/RG Blvd to
Montano. Almost got sideswiped by a double trailer Sysco truck on Commanche,
so if anyone from Sysco reads this, remember: I will sue your asses if you
hit me and I remain alive.)

Tell us about the terrain and the gearing ... and post some photos, if you
can.

[RBW] New Rivendell "dual drive"

2010-06-10 Thread Jim M.
I wandered by RBW today to get the Bikesnob book and a new purse:
http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/brand-v-grabsack/20-214
Very nice bag, btw.

While I was there, I got to take a spy shot of the new dual drive on
the new Hunq:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/20986...@n04/4689448532/

They're waiting for the left-hand derailer prototype before they hook
it up. The new Hunq that they have is a 58, and rides sweet and
strong.

I also got a poor shot of the first Renovelo (the middle "o" is long)
that you can see in the Flickr Riv group soon.

2010-06-10 Thread RonLau
Chae Lee (aka i am a lineman for the county's) and I are going for a

Bring you fixedgear or SS and we can do the Paradise Loop again. ~30

It will be a causal no drop ride, if you are strong and fast, you can
climb everything twice.

They look very nice and the lower ring option would be well received.
I guess the drawback for me are the external bearings. I don't like
the visual look, I'm sure they work better but I've never had any
issue with square tapers.

on a side note the Sugino Mighty Comps are available at many different

For a small front rack bag, I like the Bailey Works D-Rack Bag.

It's made for the nitto mini front rack and is similar in size and
function to the Sackville small TrunkSack. Though I really like that
the D-Rack bag is made to order in any color combo you want. The
quality is impressive, and mine seems to be waterproof. I think it
was about $90.

BTW, I have an extra fixed/SS if anyone needs to borrow one.

It is a 54cm c-t ST with a 54 c-c tt. If you have not done SS/fixed
before, it is fun and IMHO it is good to ride with other experience
fixed/ss riders so you can learn all the joy and pain along with the

[RBW] Re: Your Favorite Handlebar Bag

2010-06-10 Thread GeorgeS
I'm in total agreement about the Berthoud bag with a decaleur. I've
tried a number of different handlebar bags and this is the best by
far. Be sure to measure the room you have for mounting and get the
right size. I also agree that the elastic bands are much easier to
use than the leather strap "luxe" model. I'm sure the Acorn boxy bag
is very nice but the Berthoud can be obtained from Wallingford or one
of the other outfitters without a long wait. I try to forget that
it's French.

[RBW] Re: Your Favorite Handlebar Bag

2010-06-10 Thread Mojo
I have only used the Acorn Boxy but like it alot. It requires the
front rack you already have, but no other mounting hardware. It is
very stable, easily attached (with 4 velcros below and two cords
around the brake hoods) and easily moved from bike to bike, or to
carry with you. Only used in short rain rides so far, so I have no
input for you there.

The pockets inside the top flap on the deluxe bags are nice. There's a
place that's perfect for a brevet card, and there's a zippered pocket
that makes a nice place to stash a $20 and forget it until you need it.
The model with the elastics lacks those features. But it's true, it is
definitely easier to get into the elastic-closed pockets than the
straps.

I use an Ortlieb front bag for touring on my Atlantis and like it very
well, but for your purposes, I agree with Larry-- get a bag that is
not supported just by the handlebars. When I put too much weight in my
handlebar bag, handling of the bike degrades and I get a horrible
downhill shimmy. This is no problem for me, since I only use the
handlebar bag when I'm touring and have an entire suite of other
Ortlieb bags to stash my extra stuff, but if I were trying to put
food, rainclothes, sweater, fruit, sandwich, camera and maps in the
Ortlieb, I would not be happy.

[RBW] Re: Your Favorite Handlebar Bag

2010-06-10 Thread rperks
I keep my GF-1 in a Tamrac Mosel 3320 - Areo Zoom 20. I find this
fits perfectly in my Acorn bag. I leave both bags unzipped for quick
access while riding. there is a bit of room to spare next to the
camera bag and then the two little pockest for incidentals like wallet
phone and keys. I find having the smaller bag keeps me from
overpacking. I have seen and contemplated the taller Berthoud bag for
the front, but would try and fill it (OCD) you can see it here on my
Roadeo, th epic has circulated before.

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/36302...@n08/4380585188/in/set-72157622875811028/

It has been working well, bu tnot heavily rain tested, we are spoiled
here in SoCal. I can still stuff my Canon XTi in the bag as well, bui
tthat fills it far more. THe Acorn bags are no tas hard to get as
people make it out either, you just have to set a remender for the
first and act kind of quickly

[RBW] Re: Pari-Moto Ride Report

2010-06-10 Thread EricP
Steve - did you recently build the wheel? Or were a spoke or two
replaced? If either is correct and if there was lube used, that might
be the issue. Might be some solvent didn't dry and attacked the
tube.

Jim Thill passed that wisdom on to me for the rear wheel I built for
the Sam Hillborne. Let it air dry for two days before mounting a
tire.

Probably ain't it, but just a possibility.

Patrick,

If you ever come out this way, I will go with you and you can have a

There are few climbs, nothing too bad and tons of rollers. Since you

those rollers.

Will take some pictures for you.

I like my Acorn Boxy Bag. The map case on top is wonderful, and the
turnbuckle closures on the rider-facing little pockets are so easy to
open and close with gloved fingers. Easier than elastic, for sure.
Mine currently sits on a VO Rando front rack (soon to be sitting on a
teeny custom front rack on a custom bicycle, counting, counting,
counting...), with the loop of the rack going through the leather on
the rider-facing side.

Can't comment on the Boxy bag but the seat bag sucks. On two occasions on

Even when it has the basics (tubes, tire irons, basic tools, etc., it sort

I had a problem with my brand-v seatbag velcro straps popping off.
There's a relatively easy fix to this problem.

put the top part of the velcro through the bag loop first then fasten
it to the bottom part then slide both parts so that the top and bottom
part are hanging from the bag loop.
That way the velcro is just holding them together but the strap is
holding them up.

At first glance I thought the mid-tube was a bit low, but add a frame

I'd prefer this to the high-mounted parallel top tubes.

I only see one set of bottle bosses, on the down tube. I'd guess the
mid-tube would get a second set of bosses?

No, the only thing that was new about the wheels was the tubes. I

Re: [RBW] Re: Your Favorite Handlebar Bag

2010-06-10 Thread Brian Hanson
I have an Acorn Boxy - just got it to match my Large Saddlebag for my
Hilsen. Initial comments before riding:

1. I like the fact that it mounts low and is easy on/off
2. It is well made and seems very stable
3. It's on the small side, so make sure it's big enough for what you will
use it for
4. I'm still looking with lust at the Riv BarSack - quality looks awesome -
just don't like the high mount when I have a perfectly good rack to put it
on.

The Inujirushi bag has been good to me over the course of 10,000+ miles.
Still looks great.

I personally have found the Berthoud bags harder to use en route, but eh,
you'll probably be happy with any of the
RBW/Berthoud/Acorn/Inujirushi/Watanabe options.

It's hook & loop, it's never going to hold a load like metal or

[RBW] FS - Grip King Pedals

2010-06-10 Thread Rene Sterental
Upon Keven's recommendation to address my foot pain, I changed the pedals on
both my bikes to the MKS RMX Sneaker pedals. So far so good (2 x 6+ mile
rides).

I am now selling my two pairs of Grip King pedals. Set #1 (Bombadil) has
350+ miles; selling for $40 + shipping. Might have a few scratches. Set #2
(Homer) has 20+ miles; selling for $45 + shipping. Pretty much brand new.

Payment via PayPal; will notify buyer of shipping cost before shipping.

E-mail me off-list if you're interested.

Re: [RBW] Re: Newest Latest

2010-06-10 Thread Rene Sterental
Congratulations, Rick!

I have a 61 Atlantis on order, waiting for Waterford to build and deliver to
replace my Bombadil. I had decided to go for the stock color, because after
getting my Bombadil custom painted, I have come to realize that the colors
Grant has picked have the curious property of somehow looking more and more
enticing the longer you own the bike (that's how I feel about my Waterford
AHH) yet the color I chose, didn't quite achieve that magical effect even
though I like it.

Your sage green, more green than gray, achieves that effect, at least when
staring at the photos. I'm sure it looks much better in person, but it got
me to start wondering if I could somehow go custom again but preserving the
spirit/effect of the original color, which yours appears to have
accomplished.

Your bike looks awesome! Enjoy it!!!

Patrick,

I think your lung will leave us in the dust, but the turns around here

Most turns is not by design but developed via horse trail for trees,
so they can be very tricky. Mt. Hamilton is the best example that I
know.

Re: [RBW] Re: SF/Marin Fixedgear/SS ride July 10, 2010

2010-06-10 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Change of pace: was it you who sold me or traded that nice little Canon SD
300? If so, can you tell me how to erase files on the memory cards? On all
my other (much inferior) cameras, erasing memory via the computer works.
With the Canon, I erase the files when displayed on the computer, but the
cards still read occupied, and, in one case, "full".

I am generally familiar with the Canon's controls but can't find any setting
or choice or menu that has "delete".

Thanks.

Beautiful. That's my favorite Riv, aesthetically. I saw one at
America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride in Lake Tahoe last weekend. I love
the color, the airplane guy, and the airplane spear through the
Rivendell logo. Enjoy!
