I love the look of this bike. I am hoping to get one before they go

Did you wrap each side of the bars with two pieces of tape and meet at

Thanks for the great pics!

[RBW] Re: slickersack experiences?

2010-09-29 Thread Doug
My new green SlickerSack and Platrack arrived today and is consistent
with the leather strap configuration you describe as current on the
website, Thomas. Sorry I can't describe my experience yet, but the
journey starts tomorrow morning. Platrack installation was pretty
straightforward but required a bit of problem solving, mostly
involving the diagonal braces. Ended up having to cut ~2 cm off the
top so the SlickerSack would sit level.

[RBW] Rivs and bags

2010-09-29 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I've finally found the ideal bar bags for my two Riv customs. See below. On
the blue '99 gofast, a prototype tube bag from Cambria; don't know if they
are carrying it. It works as a saddle bag, but swings; it's better as a bar
bag. Fits Lezyne minipump, two 650c tubes, various little tools and two KEO
cleat covers.

For the '03 commuter, it's an old, early-days Rivendell Acme seatbag, back
when Riv made cheap, serviceable bags. Also meant to be a small saddle bag,
but works very well as a bar bag for a bike on which I ordinarily carry, in
addition to a tool kit like that above, night-time reflective bits, spare
batteries, 16 oz of keys, etc.

Remarkable. Of course, nativity ("genes" if you like) plays a large role --
I new a man who lived far into his 80s while being very overweight and never
standing when he could sit and never walking when he could stand still. But

of an 80 year old in the hooks, perfectly flat back, out on a long, country
ride ... probably faster than I.

[RBW] Hillborne Double Toptuber Photos

2010-09-29 Thread Bryan @ Renaissance Bicycles
As we alluded to previously, the double toptube Waterford Sam
Hillborne has now been transformed into a complete bike:

http://www.renaissancebicycles.com/gallery/rb-gallery-1/

And this bike is actually our new Shop demo bike. We built it with
some lightly knobby Continental tires, Nitto Albatross bars, and a 10-
speed Shimano 105 drivetrain. This particular frame is a 56cm frame.
And although it is meant for customers to ride, it is for sale.

As you might guess the ride is sublime; the second toptube does
laterally stiffen up the bike (not that it was floppy before), and the
canti brakes are a good choice. As per usual, just good stuff.

Just let me know if you have any questions about the double toptube
version or about the build of the bike.

Cheers!

A used Ram in a 58cm might work great for you when you find one ( I've
seen 4-5 in past 3 months on EBAY/cl). I'm slightly taller than you at
5'11' with an 86cm pbh and my 58cm Ram fits me great. I'm using a
100mm stem and a setback seatpost with the B17 as far back as I can
get it. I think on a 60 you would have to use a really short stem.
Everybody fit's differently though... I have less flexibility in my
hamstrings and longer femurs, hence shorter seat height and more
setback.

Agree with Steve here.  Back from 1983 to 1986 would go through two or
three freewheels a year.  And a like number of chainrings.  That was
commuting to college through Minnesota winter and using too thick of
oil.  Ate the rings alive.

The newer stuff seems to be pretty good.  Although will admit to a
preference for steel chainrings or 7051.  And also replace the chain
more frequently than needed.  Well, most of the time.  Seems to keep
excess wear at bay.  At least for me and my riding habits.

But, yes, rain and grit does seem to wear stuff out quickly.  Just not
sure it's any quicker than before.

I haven't used it, but it is a steal price wise. Unlike other boxyish
bags, it doesn't need a rack or any special hardware, which should
always be accounted for in the price of a bar bag. I'd say you really
can't go wrong.

Re: [RBW] Re: slickersack experiences?

2010-09-29 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Oh, I see. Well, to clarify...

There are differences between the green and grey ones depicted on the web-site.
The green one has leather straps in the front. And all four of its rack straps
are sewn on the bottom and snap on the side. The grey one had leather straps on
the side, not the front. And all of its rack straps are sewn on the side and
snap on the bottom.

However, I'm aware of at least one green bag in the wild that is arranged like
the grey on one the web-site.

So I take it that there are two different kinds of green bags out there, one
like the green bag on the web-site and one like the grey one. If I were to get
a green one now, I believe it would be like the grey one on the web-site. That
is, I believe that's the style RBW's selling currently, regardless of color.

So I guess I'm looking for experiences with bags of any color like the grey one
on the web-site.

I take it that's not like yours.

Thanks for sharing, though!

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

Exactly.

And as I say above, unless the LBS allows you to watch them adjust,
take pictures of your set up to compare with the proper set up. Pauls
are deceptively simple. It is amazing the difference one washer in
another place or an mm up or down stradle height make.

I think you should just bring the bike to a bike shop and have them do
it. You've obviously got it set up all wrong, as modulation is what the
Paul Racer does better than any other brake in the world.

I have two bikes with Pauls. Modulation is similar to dual pivot.
Your description is subjective but sound like an installation issue.
Among other things you need to verify you have the correct levers for
centerpulls.

Paul's instructions do recommend you have the installation done by an
experienced mechanic. The beauty of the Paul variability is it allows
as many different configurations as there are sizes of bikes.

My first bike with Paul I had no idea what I was doing. They did not
work right. My LBS was able to get them in order right away. Some
pictures I had fortuitously taken pictures before hand allowed me to
compare my set up with the LBS set up. That combined with some trial
and error, I can now set them up right the first time.

Combined with the other adjustments proper spring tensioning is what
makes the brakes so powerful.

The Pauls do not feel like dual pivots, they are squishy.
When I switch back to dual pivot braked bike the brakes feel
too abrupt, I have to remember to use a lighter touch.

The straddle wire that came with the brakes was to stiff
and the straddle carrier was cheesy. I use a Mafac straddle
carrier and more flexible straddle carrier without the lozenge
shaped bit. You want to minimize the brake take up.

You need enough spring tension so the brakes retract completely
from the rims, the springs are also used to center the brakes.

[RBW] Re: VO Grand Cru long reach brakes?

2010-09-29 Thread Adam Kimball
Everyone,

Thanks for the discussion. This has been incredibly helpful to me.
I've never owned a bike with center-pull brakes of any type, so this
is my first time working with them. I will say that as a newbie (but
a quick-learning one) - my Paul Racer brakes have given me a lot of
headaches. I don't like the modulation of the brakes - I assume that
I will become used to it at some point, but right now they feel
incredibly squishy to my hands. Likewise, there are so many variables
to get right. I've spent no less than 10 hours setting up these
brakes (!) and right now I'm still pretty unhappy. Guess I need to
get to work on them again. They've got to do a better job stopping me
than they are doing now.. I just need to figure it out.

One thing I really don't understand is that variables the spring
tension effects? This is one area where I have not experimented very
much and I'm hopeful that I can squeeze some more performance out of
the brakes (and no, the pun was not intentional ;)

RE: [RBW] slickersack experiences?

2010-09-29 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
I have an early version, a green one. I find it incredibly useful for
commuting. The only criticism I have is that the notion of using it as a
commuting bag and then snapping it off and using it for a briefcase during the
day is undermined by the fact that the zipper is not constructed so that it
remains hidden by the zipper fly when you're holding the bag by its handle --
that is, the "non-lid" side of the zipper is not tacked down to the side of the
bag, so the zipper pulls out (remains zipped, but becomes visible) when you
carry the bag as a briefcase by its handle.

I have had NO problems with the bag unsnapping, and I find it very solid on the
Platrack. It also tends to hold contents well, minimizing shifting within.

Overall, I like the bag a lot.

I'm contemplating a SlickerSack. I know of one list member who has used one

Re: [RBW] wimpy cassettes and chain rings

2010-09-29 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Of course, you could always convert to fixed gear, start waxing (chain, not
legs) and move to the SW. I've got close to 11K miles on my Riv gofast fixie
and there is just the barest hint of wear on the ring and none at all on the
cogs (which I have admittedly changed from time to time but not "replaced".
High torque, too, and a lot of dust. 3/32 drivetrain.

Phil bb and rear hub also as new, as is SunTour cartridge front hub, all
with same mileage.

[RBW] FS-54cm Riv Road (700c or 650b)

2010-09-29 Thread EdM
I first met Grant in the early days when his business was out of his
garage. I ordered one of the earliest Riv Roads, a 54cm Reynolds 753
tubeset frame which has seen less than 1000 miles since then. It was
adorned with Mavic components and after re-consideration, I took it
apart with the intent of rebuilding it as 650b ride. 10 years later,
the frame still sits in the garage waiting to be completed. The hook?
I collected parts over the years and just short of building the
wheelset. Yes, the wheelset! Chris King H/S, Phil Wood B/B and
Hubset, Salsa Stem/Skewers, Paul Racer Brakes, T/A Zephyr Triple
Crankset, Silver Shifters, Nitto Stem, Sachs Derailleurs, Brooks Swift
saddle -- all collectible components worthy of a Rivendell. Some
components have little mileage and the remainder are all NOS. The
finish line is within grasp but Time and other project builds have
forced me to part with this beauty.

Serious inquiries only. Pictures upon request. $2000 firm.

PEACE!
EdM

[RBW] Re: wimpy cassettes and chain rings

2010-09-29 Thread scott
Yeah, I'd say make sure you check your chain-stretch once a month.
Some chains stretch really fast on me and if I don't keep up I will
wear down the drive train. This is probably a no-brainer, but when you
change your cassette, always get a new chain. Again, probably obvious
points, but whatever.

I did not have a bike then, but I still have fond memories of hiking
around Clear Water Bay and Stanley on some perfect November days back
in '89 and '90 when I was at HKU.

[RBW] Re: tange steel cranks?

2010-09-29 Thread EricP
Wonder if the steel wool would eat into that greyish finish.

Overall, not sure I like them. They don't look "right" to my eyes.
And the pedal threading seems awfully deep. Seem to be like the old
Bullseye cranks which were popular back in early mountain biking
days. Tioga also made the Revolver. Maybe if they are inexpensive,
would buy a set. Then again, if cheap were the main criteria, would
probably spring for one of the Campy triples on eBay instead.

[RBW] Re: wimpy cassettes and chain rings

2010-09-29 Thread EricP
