My guess is that the photo is of the most recent prototype, and that
the production ones will still have canti braze-ons. If the frame in
the photo is your size, perhaps you should call Riv and offer to buy

choice if available. If there are plans to do a run this year then I will
gladly wait but if not I will need to purchase something else pretty soon.
Maybe a nice dark red or deep yellow jersey.

Although there are some RBW staff members who read from time to time, if
there are product ideas, requests or preferences, it's still a better idea
to either cc them on a post like this, or email RBW directly. I'd probably
send it to John, who can route it appropriately.

[RBW] Re: 'Nuther new Rivbike owner intro.

2011-04-19 Thread iamkeith
Building on some other comments here, I'd look at the unpainted fork
as an opportunity, and suggest having some braze-ons added to accept
the struts for a small front rack like the Nitto/Riv Mark's Rack or a
two-strut model. Not having them is my biggest complaint about my
Rambouillet. If you look at the photo gallery of Rambouillets on the
Cyclofiend site, you'll notice that about half of the bikes DO have
front racks, and that owners have had resort to using those ugly
clamps to make them work.

[RBW] Re: 'Nuther new Rivbike owner intro.

2011-04-19 Thread Manny
Hello all,

Seth wins the prize! Yes Mtn. Sports in Bristol, VA had this bike and
others as well. If you call them, ask for Steve, he's to be the bike
guy there.

Cost of painting the fork is not a factor unless it costs as much as
painting a whole bike, I don't think that'll be the case. I'm sure my
friend with the hotrod shop can do it at a reasonable price. I did
email JB for advice and he told me to be "rigidly flexible" in my
expectations of a good match. He says even the best painter using
different paint and equipment can not perfectly match the existing
frame paint. He suggested and I agree that chrome does not fit this
bike. Also he said to consider painting it the headtube cream color as
this would be an easier match, kinda like that idea. Also, whoever
does the job has to have the frame, I'm reluctant to ship it all over
the place. I'll start local and if that doesn't fly, JB is a half days
drive from me! This is a Toyo built and painted frame; the guys at
Riv. simply said, "painted at the factory with Japanese paint".

Thanks for the warm welcome and all your suggestions. My plan is to
build this as a comfy-fasty-roady not racy bike. I do have a Nitto
rear rack that may find it's way onto the bike. We don't get much rain
here so fenders are out. Also have Noodle bars, and Brooks: Swallow,
or an Swift or B17 Std to try, one of them will win the job as they
already have some mileage on 'em. The rest of the build ideas are
bouncing around my skull.

[RBW] Project bike will take Roly Poly tires.

2011-04-19 Thread William
I'm well on my way to converting a 1984 Trek 770 into a retro-modern
all road bike. Two shortcomings of my current road bike (a Davidson
Signature) were that it doesn't take a tire wider than 700x25, and
that it fits like a racing bike. I had it custom built in my youth,
and so now to get the bars up I had to use a Technomic Deluxe which is
excellent but I think it looks a little less than ideal to have a ton
of seatpost and a ton of stem showing. It makes the frame look too
small.

Anyway, this Trek is a couple cm taller than my Davidson, so I hope to
get a similar fit with a regular proportioned stem. I finished
stripping the bike down, and I'll start selling off a lot of the Campy
Super Record parts through the normal channels. I got my compact
double crankset, and I've secured a few freewheels for various gearing
options. The recent highlight is that I've confirmed that a 700x27
Roly Poly will fit (no fender). I'm thrilled about that, and it was
something that I wasn't sure would work out. If the bike turns out as
well as I hope, I might get it powdercoated. I bought some
Resurrectio stickers from Riv on that chance.

Riv content: Higher bars, fearlessly riding a 30 year old lugged
steel MUSA frameset, Roly Poly tires bought from Riv, not being retro
for retros sake.

[RBW] Re: New Bleriot Owner; intro and some thoughts

2011-04-19 Thread Lynne Fitz
I carry two spares, patch kit, tire pump (Topeak Road Morph), tire
levers, Trek multitool (includes chain tool), spare master link, my
S&S wrench (Bleriot has couplers), and a bottle of chain lube.

I've had like, um, 4(?) flats with Bleriot, which is coming up on
10,000 miles.

Of course, my idea of a nice ride out in the country may vary from
yours. Most of my riding is NOT urban riding. Biggest worry is glass
on the road shoulders.

[RBW] Re: New Bleriot Owner; intro and some thoughts

2011-04-19 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
+1 Lezyne mini-pumps

All of the Lezyne mini-pumps I've used have a hose, which makes all
the difference in the world, IMHO.

I don't think I got more than 2 or 3 uses out of the 3 or 4 different
mini-pumps I tried before they started to leak badly or simply fell
apart. Then I started using Lezyne's Pressure Drive M. Since then,
I've used nothing but Lezyne portable pumps for everything, including
inflating from empty. I've had only one problem (see below)

I have the Micro-Floor pump (from Wiggle, I think), the Pressure Drive
M, available from VO last I looked, and the Pressure Drive S, which I
believe I got from AEBike (M=medium, S=small). The Micro-Floor and the
Pressure Drive M come with or without a built-in guage in the hose.
The M is a tight fit in the Keven's/SaddleSack XS/Brand V Saddlebags.
That's why I got a Pressure Drive S too. But the M fits fine in a Bar
Tube / Candy Bar / Hobo or Li' Loafer/TrunkSack Small.

The only problem I've ever had with any of them is that a few times
with the Micro-Floor pump I accidentally removed the Presta valve core
when trying to remove the pump from the tire. Being careful, I could
completely avoid this. But I never give it a thought on the two
Pressure Drive pumps. And, on the tubes I use now, I have since red-
loctite'd the valve cores in place (don't care about their
removability anyway) and have never had a problem after that. Though
it was never a problem with the Pressure Drive pumps, it may still be
that the problem was really with the user and/or the tube as much as
the Micro-Floor pump.

The M is easy in use and convenient to start using. The Micro-Floor
pump is *very* easy in use but, interestingly, kind of a pain to get
started (if it is stowed, you have to unscrew the head from its base,
and that is pretty tedious). The S is a little uncomfortable to use
compared to the others. But basically, if I'm just adding a little
air, the S or M are perfectly fine. If I'm going to pump a tire up
from flat (700x35-38) then I'll grab the Micro-Floor pump or the
Pressure Drive M if either's at hand but I'm okay with the Pressure
Drive S if they're not.

I've wondered about the Lezyne line's other offerings (Road drive,
Alloy drive) but am happy enough with my Pressure Drives that I
haven't bothered to look at the others. Except I like the cosmetics of
the Road drive... and I think there's an alloy bottle-cage bracket for
it. Which would certainly be more attractive than the black plastic
ones.

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

I'd be interested, especially if they have front pockets, with back
pockets, too, if necessary. Not particularly interested in shoulder
closure but could live with it (but not with front closure, too).

And not to divert business from Riv, but the all-time best LS jersey
I've ever seen is the Wabi Woolen one. What a nice jersey!

Re: [RBW] 'Nuther new Rivbike owner intro.

2011-04-19 Thread Curtis Schmitt
Welcome, Manny. I'd try to have them match it. And agree with the post
recommending to do any custom mods now before having it painted. The
dyno wiring really isn't very attractive. This is a really great
opportunity, actually. While they've got your colors mixed and ready
to spray, perhaps choose front/rear racks and have 'em sprayed to
match, and/or a lugged stem, and/or fenders. Look through some NAHBS
photos for inspiration. So many options!

Enjoy!

I've used The Color Factory in Waretown, NJ. and really like their
work. Bruce Risley is the owner, and has been painting bikes for many
years. He uses DuPont Imron paint. No web site; his phone # should
be searchable online. It's a small operation (but don't be fooled)...
he's a pro, and has plenty of references. Good luck.

I inflated my Fatty Rumpkin with a small topeak hand pump in jjust two or three
minutes. I then rode another 15 miles on it with no problems whatsoever. I
don't see a need for cartridge inflators. If you ride in remote areas there
won't be a readily available source for cartridges

[RBW] Re: 'Nuther new Rivbike owner intro.

2011-04-19 Thread islaysteve
Welcome Manny! From the other new Riv owner with the Ti road bike!
I'm not retired yet, but I'm a little over a year away from that.
Regarding painting the fork, I'm betting that it will be expensive to
do it through an auto paint shop, although it may still be your best
bet. A couple of thoughts: Check out and contact Airglow painting in
Georgia. He painted my Ti frame and did a great job. He should be
able to match the color, but I don't know what he will charge. I
think he's reasonable for the high quality of work that he does. He
certainly doesn't charge Joe Bell prices! In the alternative, you
could go for a close match to the cream (it wouldn't matter as much if
wasn't exact). that might give your bike a distinctive look. If you
are handy, you could even try to do that yourself with automotive
spray touch-up paint. If you weren't happy with the results, consider
it a temporary measure. I personally wouldn't do any chrome on the
fork, as I doubt that there's any on the frame, right? I'll also be
the first to ask you to post pics; frame, bare fork and all. Enjoy
your new bike!

Welcome, Manny. Hot rod painters should be able to take care of you.
Alternatively, you could ship the fork to the original painter, but
I'm guessing the hot rod guys will have just as good a shot at
matching the frame paint.

I'm also in the 3 tubes plus patch kit camp.

So far I've never needed to use the kit but once used all three tubes
due to a hard to find wire embedded in the tire.

Another good thing about Jack Browns is that I've been able to limp

Actually, I carry three plus a patch kit.

While you are correct that the tires and tubes you'll use on your

remember too that nobody on a ride with you is going to have a tube

can't be fixed with patching.

Regarding #3.
As I've said before I used to eschew the use of zip-ties on 'fine

That was before I used them to install mud flaps on my Saluki.

Now I'm a convert. Zip-ties even work as a way of mounting blinky tail
lights to the rear rack.

Regarding mudflap attachment... I've tried three ways:

1) screws/lockwashers/nuts

The only reason I tried (2) and (3) were because (1) and (2) failed,
each within a few hundred miles.

(3) hasn't failed, in about 4,000 miles of riding so far. On potholed
buckling pavement and on rutted trails on two different bikes. I'm a
little concerned about the zip-tie holding my Sackville mudflap to my
aluminum fenders on my Hillborne's front wheel; it's been there a
couple of months and it may be getting slowly sliced by the edge of
the holes I drilled in the fender. I intend to insert rubber grommets
if I ever have a problem there. But with my other bike and its SKS
chromoplastic fenders, I've got a single zip-tie holding a Sackville
mudflap on the front and two zip-ties holding a VO leather mudflap on
the back. I admit I wasn't sure about the zip-ties with the (heavy)
leather flap on the (flexy) sorta-plastic fender. But so far I've had
no problems.

My experience thus far has lead me to one solid conclusion... if I
were to develop a habit of replacing that zip-tie every time I, say,
re-shellac my handlebar tape or clean my front derailer, I'd expect
never to have a problem.
