[RBW] Re: Grant's new game...

2011-08-16 Thread Allan in Portland
Hey Grant, don't quit your day job. The Carnival would leave you stranded on
the side of the highway in the middle of Kansas I'm sure. As a hint for next
time, don't use those really expensive rare earth magnets. Cheapies from an
old science kit are the way to go, even if you have to glue 'em to the side
of the building. Actually, if you have to glue them they are perfect.

[RBW] Any DC-area Betty Foys? Need help securing spousal permission to order one!

2011-08-16 Thread Hugh Rope
Dear Rivendell Owners' Bunch,

I'm writing to ask for your help. We've *almost* decided to get a 52
cm Betty Foy for my wife.

She's 5'4" and rides with a a saddle height just a smidge below 25".
She's currently commuting on a full-suspension Canndondale w/ road
slicks, and she's *almost* convinced that a lovely steel mixte with
fenders & upright bars would be a better commuter (and a source of
joy, what with the pretty hearts in the lugs...).

But here's the thing: She's concerned about ordering a bike that she's
never seen or ridden. Emphasis on the ridden, I think.

We live in Kensington, Maryland, which is just outside the Capital
Beltway, next to Bethesda.

My question is, might there by a proud Betty Foy owner or "Rivendell
ambassador" somewhere in the greater DC/Baltimore area, who might let
my wife check out (take just the quickest of spins on) such a bike?

Please forgive my presumption. And thank you sincerely, in advance,
for any help.

Thanks!

With the number of DC folks in the area, it'd be great if we could
maintain a sublist for DC based RBW owners, i think it'd be helpful
for these types of requests, and also for posting local events.

As for the original request, i only know about the mysterious Betty
Foy that surfaced recently, so good luck finding one to test ride. In
a pinch consider test riding another rivendell, not ideal but will
give her an idea of what it would feel like.

And Hugh, admit it, you want the Betty Foy more then your wife :)

I don't think there needs to be a sublist. The various regions of the
country talk on this list to coordinate pretty commonly - especially
the cali contingent. I don't see why the DC-area folks can't use this
list too.

[RBW] FS: Saddlebag Support (VO ViVa)

2011-08-16 Thread Curtis Schmitt
I no longer palp a large saddlebag, so this support is no longer needed. It
is the best support I've used. One thing to note is that the rubber insert
it comes with has disintegrated so if you don't want scratches on your
seatpost, I'd suggest adding your own rubber insert, or come up with another
solution. The one it came with tends to be pretty worthless anyway, way too
soft. It is in very good condition.

VO gets $58 for
these,
although they're currently out of stock. I'd like to get $40 shipped via
PayPal. I can ship out tomorrow. Please let me know off-list. Thanks.

Seth,

You're probably right, maybe the DC crowd are not as social as the
Cali crowd. In addition i'd be ok being on an informal email tree
(not sure about everyone else), just so i'd know who's in the area,
maybe get together for group rides, parts swapping. Maybe i'm just
too sensitive about polluting the list ;)

Yeah, I wish I hadn't learned that one the hard way.

I'm glad you are enjoying it the setup. I use my SlickerSack regularly but
when I'm not transporting things that need protection I often use an elastic
cargo net to hold things to the Platrack. Sometimes I just use an old piece
of cardboard to keep things from falling through or from getting squished on
the metal (long sandwiches come to mind). I've managed to carry way too much
up front and have never had a handling problem.

Minh, why don't you start a new post, inviting DC-area Riv'rs to post email

Robert,

Your feedback had a lot of influence on my decision. Coincidentally, EcoVelo
very recently posted a comparison of the Platrack and the Pass & Stow racks
by Mel Hughes, who by the way, tested both on a very beautiful A. Homer
Hilsen:
http://www.ecovelo.info/2011/08/13/two-porteur-racks-one-users-experiences/

I found it very well written and informative.

[RBW] Re: Any DC-area Betty Foys? Need help securing spousal permission to order one!

2011-08-16 Thread Lisa
What sort of handlebars does your wife want on her Betty Foy?

I'm a little shorter than your wife, but pretty close (5'3", saddle height
of 625 mm) and I ride a 47 cm Atlantis with drop bars (60 mm stem and
short-reach bars). My Atlantis has a top tube length of 520 mm. The 52 cm
Betty Foy, with a similar seat tube angle, has an (effective) top tube of
575 mm. It may fit with Albatross bars, but with drop bars, it would almost
certainly be much too long for a 5' 4" woman.

It might be nice to test a 47 cm Foy as well as a 52 cm, if you can arrange
to do it.

Re: [RBW] First Platrack/Slickersack impressions...

2011-08-16 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
That's right; I wrap the bungee behind the ball two or three times (I forget
exactly how many; whatever is needed to take up slack), like a too-long
rubber band. I've since thought about feeding the bungee through the
pannier's leather patch's slots twice to take up the slack. I haven't taken
any opportunities to try this though; it might take up *too much* slack
(i.e. make it too tight to thread through the band clamp easily when
mounting).

Using the technique in the photo, the panniers have always been firmly in
place on the good trails and roads I ride. I've never felt like they needed
to be tighter at all. I can't say how they'd handle fast rocky descents or
anything; I've never done anything like that. I quickly got good enough at
attaching and detaching the panniers as depicted that I can do either blind
now, including threading each bungee through its band clamp. Which seems
like it should be hard but just isn't.

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

Today, on my maiden voyage for the new Sam Hillborne, I remembered that a
friend had let me know about a wild blackberry stash in town. I rode over,
picked berries, turned my hands red, and ate them. I then rode home.
Pretty solid way to spend the day.

I'll put some pics up later.

Nothing more paleo than scaring up some berries!

When that happens eat more fats and protein plus veggies not carbs. I
just eat a big steak and a huge salad then top it off with
strawberries and home made whip cream using stevia to 'sweeten'. It
satiates me just fine, is low carb and I get enough calories. Doing
this now for a while and still losing fat. If I eat the carbs I get on
a vicious circle of wanting more later.

I rode today and got in six hours, stopped after three hours at the

seriously... just going with a little fruit now, we'll see how it

2011-08-16 Thread charlie
You'd be better off to eat more than a little fruit.maybe a
medium amount. I think sometimes just taking a break and having a meal
is perfect. I mean if your goal is (just) to get somewhere, take a
break. If you are training for some kind of event I guess you have to
eat on the ride but I figure Grok took a break then resumed trekking
into the wilderness in search of wild game or an elusive cave woman.
Actually, I suppose Grok nibbled on nuts and berries along the way
too. I'm looking forward to getting one of those nifty lightweight
stoves and might do some longer meandering rides with a picnic style
break and a hot cup of coffee (probably not a Grok bev but I like
coffee) plus I like the time to reflect and enjoy a nice view. I just
can't get into the long grueling slog while only looking straight
ahead anymore.
