[RBW] Re: V-brake vs canti question

2012-01-17 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
One common cause of mushiness is excessive toe-in of the pads. I generally
start with the pads flat against the rim, and toe-in only if there's shuddering
or squealing.

I've only dealt with travel agents on tandems, where they are a stock item when
STI and v-brakes are the spec. Interestingly, some newer Santana tandems seem
to have STI levers with v-brakes (or long pull discs), but no travel agent. I
assume this means that Shimano increased the cable pull on the latest
generation of STI levers. My mechanic Mongo tried it and says it works great.

[RBW] Re: V-brake vs canti question

2012-01-17 Thread Jeremy Till
Actually, I've found that maximizing braking power with cantilevers or v
brakes often results in levers that feel "mushy" compared to say, caliper
brakes. In fact, what you are doing is maximizing the mechanical advantage
of the system; if the levers are moving a relatively large amount (say,
most of the way to the bar) for a relatively short distance traveled by the
brake pads, that means you are exerting the maximum possible leverage on
the brake pads and the maximum possible pressure on the rims.

Think about what you would do to exert a large force on a heavy weight with
a long lever: you would set it up with the fulcrum nearest the weight, so
you could move the lever a long ways with relatively little force in order
to move the weight a short distance with a large amount of force.

The limit case, at least with low-profile cantis, is setting the straddle
cable as low as possible and the brake pads as close to the rim as possible
without brake rub. That way, the brake pads don't need to travel far; thus
lever travel is used less to move the pads and more to exert a greater
force on the rim once contact is made. Of course, the practical limits on
this setup are clearance below the straddle cable, sufficient pad clearance
(esp. in muddy conditions), and sufficiently limited lever travel such that
the lever is not bottoming out on the bar.

I once set up the front low-profile cantilever on a fixed gear of mine with
the pads close in and the straddle cable as low as possible. The lever
felt mushy in the stand but I went for a test ride, got to the end of the
block, and almost threw myself over the handle bars; I was totally
surprised by how much power i was getting out of the brake for how little
pressure I was putting on the lever.

Cantilever geometry can be confusing and counter-intuitive, but they can
produce quite a lot of braking power with a relatively weak grip. It took
me a few reads to get it, but Sheldon's article on cantilever geometry and
set-up really is the best explanation of it all:

http://sheldonbrown.com/cantilever-geometry.html

[RBW] Re: V-brake vs canti question

2012-01-17 Thread dougP
Thanks for all the good comments, especially the Tektro pn for the V-
brake specific lever. Funny that with all the V-brakes out there,
there aren't more road levers for them. The more I look at these &
how they work, ease of set-up (Travel Agent issues aside) and staying
out of the way of baggage & rackage, the better I like them.

I changed out the rear brake just to get some feedback. The Travel
Agent is a bit fiddly to work out correctly. She reports quite a bit
more power but also quite a bit of lever travel. I have the shoes
within 1 mm of rim contact each side. To me, the lever seems mushy
but the brakes are effective. Neither of us have ever ridden V-brakes
so we're not sure what they're supposed to feel like. The comment
about one more thing in the braking system is valid. I need to re-
check everything to see if there's something slack that I missed, but
the brake arms start moving as soon as you actuate the brake lever.

No disrespect intended to William who pointed out BikeSnob's latest (it is a kick-butt blog entry - thanks William!), but I'd like to recommend that we not use this list to discuss BikeSnob unless there is some significant Rivendell product connection in an entry. Otherwise, bringing up BikeSnob (whose book I really enjoy by the way) is likely to lead to a large volume of off-topic (yet civil) arguments on this list, AKA too much noise.

The Bullmoose "one size fits all" approach makes sense. The modus operandi
for this bar seems to be "stick a really long stem out there because the
massive reach is gonna work for just about everybody". Might as well just

Good find Geoff, I had a recollection but couldn't find it.

I imagine a big galoot might be able to make the new bar slip in even the
mighty jaws of a Nitto. Even if that's impossible, it's easy to believe
the flex might be enough to put some people off. Bullmoose version reduces
the chances of both.

Thanks for the photos. I've still not added the fenders to my Betty, but

[RBW] new bars spy shot-- Alba-moose?

Anybody got the low down on what's happening with the bars in this picture?

www.flickr.com/photos/haircow/6700334839/in/pool-64927372@N00/

Looks like a bullmoose version of the albatross, or the new bar under
development. Is this going into production? I'd been kicking myself for
not getting a pair of the bullmoose before they became a "vintage" item,
but if these are coming down the pike, I'm excited!

Most of my bicycle touring has been in areas with at least once per day
access to a store or restaurant where I could buy coffee, but my hiking
trips have taken me to places where it would be a multi day hike to get
fresh coffee... not only is Via a good camp coffee, even instant mashed
potatoes start to taste like heaven when you're too tired to cook anything
more substantial! When you're exhausted after 70 miles of loaded riding or
12 or so miles of loaded hiking your priorities change a bit, otherwise I'd
be carrying my hand grinder and moka pot! My loads are already far too
heavy without that luxury.

He is starting to sound like a crotchety old man; and he's only 37 or so? I
like him but I was surprised by the vehemence of his statements -- which I
agree with, btw.

Can he be fundamentally serious under the surface of low comedy?

Moving on: there are several interesting bike blogs by women; Lovely
Bicycle is the best known but there are others worth reading (must find the
urls) even if you discount those aimed at purely women's interests as
clothing and so forth. I find the difference in perspective refreshing --
far, far less interest in kit and the minutiae of technology.

I did hear of the sale, but didn't pay much attention to it since I don't
have the money now for a new frame.

So the SO is also discontinued -- too bad, but perhaps, if it is like the
QB, it is not as "road-y" in handling as I want (tho' the specs for the 56
look very promising. Anyway, QBs come up for sale on various lists quite
often, so SO's will probably also start appearing used.

[RBW] Queue Backlog

2012-01-17 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Hey all -

Thanks for the emails regarding the sluggardly performance of some recent
post attempts. It appears, that as google continues to upgrade the groups
interface, they now no longer allow me to review/pass through posts via
email. So, they were piling up without me getting any notice of it.
Maybe not - there might just be some new switch I have to throw.

But, I cannot give it my full attention until the end of this month, so
there may be a few more herky-jerky moments in posts not showing up.

Anyway, just let a whole slug through today (1/17, am) so if you don't see
yours, it won't appear.

Thanks to all for your patience, and to everyone for their contributions.

[RBW] Re: Touring Load and Packing list with weights

2012-01-17 Thread Roger
I like a French Press, and figured a way to make a 16oz Contigo insulated
stainless mug and a French Press plunger do double duty for drinking and
coffee making. The Contigo fits water-bottle cages and is easy to use while
riding.

I re-purposed a plunger from a plastic Peets travel French Press that fits
nicely into the Contigo, and is just the right length to hold the grounds
tight when I put the lid on the mug. I don't let it bother me that the
grounds are pressed to the bottom of the mug while I'm drinking, and
sometimes there is a ground or two that gets loose.

For the cost of a few grams of plunger, a uni-tasking coffee pot is avoided,
and I can store the plunger in the travel mug until needed again.

Pictures prove it's real:

2012-01-17 Thread Michael_S
Doug, While my opinion is that the right cantilever brakes ( Avid or Paul )
stop just as well I would just caution that the Travel Agents have a
reputation for cable failure becasue of the tighter bend. Since it's your
wifes bike and she is a lighter weight person and probably won't be
carrying huge loads it's probably not an issue. Just something to keep an
eye on.

Re: [RBW] Re: V-brake vs canti question

2012-01-17 Thread Andrew
I'm really enjoying the braking with my cheap Shimano medium-profile
cantis, arms out as wide as possible (posts still adequately captured by
the brake bolt), straddle wire as low as possible... the feel is soft but
the brakes are quick to stop.

Another good analysis of cantilever brake geometry, in addition to
Sheldon's, is here:

[RBW] Re: Touring Load and Packing list with weights

2012-01-17 Thread Daniel M
I will share my perspective here. Background: I backpack and bike
tour multiple times per year, and have accepted that I will never be a
lightweight camper. However I am always seeking ways to bring a
little bit less. I am particularly dismayed when I do overnight trips
and find myself carrying almost the same load as I would for a 3-4 day
trip. That said, this is what I would personally eliminate from your
packing list. Note that I did not say personally RECOMMEND; the most
important thing is to go and do it your own way. That said:

For a backpacking/bike touring itinerary with no days in town, I tend
to pack 3-4 pairs of socks and 2-3 pairs of underwear, t-shirts, etc.
(All wool/synthetic.) Beyond that, one pair of nylon zip--off pants,
one set of wool long underwear tops/bottoms, one shell/rainpant combo,
one wool jacket, one pair of neoprene socks - that's about it. From
my perspective, you have WAY too much clothes.

The french press and thermos sound more appropriate for car camping to
me. I use a small plastic cone and bring a stack of paper filters and
brew directly into my insulated mug. I will not even suggest any type
of instant coffee. I have heard good things about the Aeropress as
well.

I would try to get by with just the iPhone and leave the IPad at home.

I don't carry a chain whip. When I have needed to remove my cassette
I pull the skewer and place the splined cassette tool on, and put the
wheel back on the bike as close to the dropouts as possible, and use
the chain on the bike as my chain whip. One foot on the pedal,
adjustable wrench on the cassette tool, seatpost over the wrench for
leverage and the cassette threads right off.

Leave the hammer at home. You can almost always find a rock.

I do carry a Katadyn (formerly PUR) hiker water filter. It's bulky
but rather light. It's a backpacking necessity but nice to have on a
bike tour as well. I never bother using it for cooking water - if it
has come to a boil it's good enough for me. I use a Sweetwater
prefilter to make the filter element last nearly indefinitely.
Replacing $3 prefilters is preferable to replacing $50 filter
elements!

Even if you were to make all of these changes you will still have a
rather extensive load and in no way reduce the justification for
owning a Bombadil. My touring bike is also a heavyweight - Thorn
Raven with Rohloff hub, so lightweight is pretty much out the window
even before the bike is loaded!

Enjoy the tour and may your tires stay inflated and your spokes
unbroken.

Daniel

completed in the spring now. They seemed to be mostly done with it

[RBW] Re: Odd New Bike: Built, Explained

2012-01-17 Thread David T.
How often is a new frame designed at the same time as a new handlebar?
I really like that idea; people talk about trail, geometry etc. of a
frame, but so much of the feel and steering depends on the handlebar
and the stem, so to have the frame and handlebar designed for each
other makes a lot of sense, but I don’t think it happens very often.

I also like the part about using this bike for one purpose, which
frees up your other bikes. If you have two or three bikes, the way you
set one of them up influences the way you can set up the others. In
other words, if you have one bike that can handle commuting, getting
groceries etc. then you maybe you can take the fenders and basket off
another bike and it becomes your sport bike, or imaginary racing
machine.

I don’t really need this kind of bike right now, but it is kind of fun
to critique bike design, even though it isn’t the same as actually
knowing how to build them, or having that skill or experience. It
isn’t to judge how a bike was designed, or criticize, but as a
bicycling enthusiast it is interesting to talk about the geometry and
design of frames, more as an appreciation.

[RBW] Re: Touring Load and Packing list with weights

2012-01-17 Thread Marc Irwin

I guess I'm a little different, I carry less on my bike than I do
backpacking. What I have is here:
 http://simplecycle-marc.blogspot.com/2011/04/bike-packing-101.html?m=1

for a weekend or week it ends up the same, and weighs between 60-65
lbs including the bike.

Re: [RBW] Re: Fender Frustration

2012-01-17 Thread Chris
Hi Rene,

Here's a photo
setof my
Mark's rack setup. Comparing to my Sam, the fender fit on the Betty
is much tighter (given that the Betty has caliper brake and also wider
tires). I switched one of the bolts and used it to secure the fender. The
setup seems to work well, except when I make really sharp turn to the
right.

I'll ask the LBS people about the fender when I take the bike in for
service. Will report back if there's any new discovery. Thanks!

(I posted the link a few days ago, but it seemed to be lost...)

[RBW] 58cm Saluki for Sale, needs good home, just too big for me.

2012-01-17 Thread Peter M
Had this up for trade but now have a tentative deal worked out to get
a smaller AHH so this beauty needs to go. Again it is a 58cm Saluki in
Pea Sage Green. Has one tiny ding in downtube and some paint loss
behind BB but I touched it up pretty well. Sale includes frame fork
and headset. The BB is brand new but it is 113 since I run IGH hubs,
if you want it though I will include it for nothing. Besides for the
minor techincal issues bike is in great shape with really no other
scrapes or paint loss to speak of, never crashed or dropped. Chainstay
has a cool shellaced twine finish with tape under it to keep it water
proof but if you dont want it I can get rid of it no problem, paint
under it is perfect. One of the last of the Toyo built Salukis, it
really is a beautiful bike but just too big for me. Here is the link
to flikr page http://www.flickr.com/photos/67889635@N06/ if you need
more pics just let me know. I also have a campy NR strada crankset and
bb if the seller wants to have a more vintage flair i can include at a
very low price. Paid $1,200 shipped a few months ago looking to get
$1000 shipped this time around because I am being honest with the
small cosmetic details. Thanks for looking.

2012-01-17 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Even the cheapie Tektro v-brakes, which are under $30 for a bike's worth, are
amazingly powerful and all but foolproof to set up.

I stopped using cantilevers on my own bikes several years ago. Canti fans often
claim that cantilevers are a simple matter of set-up, that theoretically they
should be as powerful as v-brakes, provided that several variables are properly
adjusted. If that's true, then I never figured out the right way to do it. My
most powerful cantilevers were nowhere near as powerful as any of the v-brakes
I use, certainly not without a trade off in required grip power.

I have never been able to get Shimano levers to work well with cantis.
Cane Creek / Tektro levers work very well with both my Neo Retros and

am probably a good test subject for this discussion.

Personally a travel agent sounds like one more moving part to fiddle with

The old Shimano wide profile cantis on the trike, and the modern wide IRCs
(I think that's the brand) on the Sam Hill are both very powerful and set
up with little hassle. I didn't even bother putting salmon pads on the
Shimanos. I could never get low profiles to work well with drop bar levers.
The Mafacs stink. My experience, anyway.
