Agreed. Pictures remind me I need to stop by the shop and restock on
some wool long sleeves, then get some advice on my current ride and
most importantly camera duel with Harry. Maybe I shall make a ride of
it...

[RBW] Re: Front rack ideas

2012-02-19 Thread Montclair BobbyB
I just installed a Jandd Extreme rack, which required a special
hack... a bracket mod to make it fit the mid-fork mounts and still
remain level. It's a beautiful rack, (similar to the Surly Nice
Rack)... I'll have to see how it performs, but so far I like the way
it sits on my bike ('86 Schwinn Cimarron).

2012-02-19 Thread John Speare
I agree. There's no black magic here.

And the econodreambike has kind of been done -- with the exception of the
marketing part.

Kogswell Model D was a Taiwanese-tig welded, direct copy of the Rambo. I don't
know the Riv models that well, but I'd be willing to bet that the Rambo is
pretty much geometrically indistinguishable, where it counts anyway, to
Roadeo/Hilson.

Grant certainly doesn't need to work with anybody for David's econodreambike to
come to fruition. Grant's involvement would be good for marketing and
publicity, but lots of bike guys and gals have the design chops to pull it off
without his help. I agree that a tigged and threadless Roadeo/Hilsen knockoff
could be a good seller if done well and marketed smartly.

Re: [RBW] Re: Need help deciding... Soma San Marcos or Revamp an 84 Trek 610...

2012-02-19 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
I have a Pacer and a recently built up a Ram. The Ram is livelier in
handling than the Pacer, but the Pacer is a fine bike. It doesn't
handle tires as wide as the Ram, and nowadays with the terrible roads
in the area (in Oakland--where one cyclist died flying over a crack
into oncoming traffic), I make it a point to use as wide as I can go
for comfort and safety.

I think there is a market for a lively road bike that can use wide
tires. The Pacer, Casseroll, Smoothie are all in the right direction,
but they can go even wider.

A few hundred dollars in the frame is not a justification for me to
get a different frame--especially when the different frame doesn't
give you what you want... I would rather wait and buy the frame that
really works than pay a little less and get something inferior and
wish you had something else for as long as you put up with the
inferior bike...

Ohhh, nice. Didn't think about that... their 60cm Osprey is just about
spot on if it can fit 35mm tires (tyres!).

Mike S had a Gryphon for a minute. If I ever decide to build up a drop

Jim, you're 100% correct. GP isn't the only that can design a bike,

And like the bars, still getting tweaked. Saddle has been adjusted to be
level. I thought maybe the springs would give enough to make it "sit" level
when my considerable weight was on it, but apparently I'm not heavy enough --
not a phrase I think or type very often.

The Singular Cycles offerings are almost there, but maybe too similar
to the Soma? The Kite 'cross bike is tigged, 1 1/8" threadless, with
cantis. Most of the road bikes are lugged, though. My favorite
Singular is the Gryphon, which is nothing like you describe. It's more
of a rolling-up of all my bikes into one Cunningham-inspired unit.

Re: [RBW] Fork rake radius

2012-02-19 Thread Mojo
It was Rivendell/GP that brought fork bend into my consciousness.
I do not think ride quality is noticably compromised by a dog-leg fork
bend.
But it was Rivendell who made me appreciate a low tight fork bend as in the
Nobilette-made fork on the Legolas
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79695460@N00/5598979996/in/set-72157607471577085

All of this is of the aesthetic of what makes a nice looking bike, from
this group's perspective.
Fork bend and fender line do not effect performance, but for some folks
including GP these are important points.
I think Jim Thill's option A nicely explains the current offering

Re: [RBW] Fork rake radius

2012-02-19 Thread Bruce Herbitter
Some years back, Grant wrote at a little length on fork bends and how he
was working with the new supplier in Taiwan to get the bends just right.
Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, and while I don't get hung up
on fork radii, I don't like straight leg forks at all. All of my bikes have
varying fork curves. The Ram is about perfect IMO, the Saluki a close
second. The Road std and a Maruishi-for-Nashbar have less than I would
like, while a B-stone has too much. They ALL ride great. They also all have
stays without any crimps in them, which is a deal killer for me. Like I
said, everyone's idea of just right is different.

Jim is right about not being zombie sycophants mouthing the praises of
Walnut Creek bikes. We're here becuase we generally like them and the
aesthetic that they rise from, but we won't always like every thing that
comes along from RBW WHQs. That's fine too. There's always enough stuff
there for me to like. I won't live long enough to need another bike (that
is, wear out any of the current stable mates) but I send others their way
fairly often.

[RBW] Fork rake radius

2012-02-19 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
It's understandable that such a thing could happen. Imagine someone at Riv
prying open the crates of forks, which have been ordered for months, and
discovering the bend isn't quite what they wanted. Option A is to live with it,
beauty is in the eye of the beholder, imperfection is perfection, and these
will work just fine. Option B is to insist the fork people make it "right",
which likely involves some cost in dollars, vendor relationship, and most
importantly several more months of waiting. During the wait, Riv sits on a
warehouse of frames, parts, and accessories that are unsellable without forks,
and cash flow takes a huge hit. Option A sounds good to me! In that case, I'd
ride it!

On the other hand, maybe GP likes his forks that way now. Or maybe it was a
concession to the price-point. In that case, I'd ride it!

I enjoy following and contributing to this group, but it loses some value if it
devolves into a cheering section for Riv. Some of these forks obviously have a
different bend, and some people don't like it. That's fine. Rivendell does,
after all, cater to a subset of the cycling population that is concerned about
a particular aesthetic. It's not a photographic accident or something to keep
quiet about. I prefer the smooth bend, too, but I don't buy bikes to hang on
the wall as art pieces. All of my bikes have some imperfection or compromise,
which I promptly forget about when I start pedaling!

The Bombadil is great. So far it's only really been used for

detect. I can't wait to put some more Kms on it!

I'd like to thank the list members whose bikes have inspired these

It was iirc $330 for the complete frame/fork.

There's a number of nice builds of them here:

I agree with you about the horizontal dropouts - I'd rather have
vertical dropouts like on all the rest of my bikes. Makes fendering
and wheel centering so much simpler, imo.

The video is compelling. Anyone who has been involved in product development

appreciate the environmental testing.

[RBW] Re: Need help deciding... Soma San Marcos or Revamp an 84 Trek 610...

2012-02-19 Thread Beth H
Refurb. You've got the clearance, cold-setting is not traumatic if you
do it carefully (and don't overstep your bounds -- i.e., don't spread
a 6-speed frame to a 10), and the Trek is a solid frame. My vote is
for bringing back the Trek. --Beth in PDX

Love the pictures of Cat with the Bombidil.

[RBW] New Bombadil and AHH

2012-02-19 Thread Tom Harrop
Hi RBW,

I've finally put the finishing touches together, so here's a link to a few
photos of my 68 cm Bombadil. Scroll through to
see some photos of Cat's 54 cm Homer. You'll also find a couple of
traditional GGRBWOB full-frame, drive-side shots for your enjoyment!

The Bombadil is great. So far it's only really been used for commuting,
although we plan to tour on these bikes. Such a nice ride, it feels stable
but not in the least bit slow. I weigh 100–110 Kg, and the most I've loaded
it up with would be about 12 Kg (some in basket, some in SaddleSack) so
far, and there wasn't the slightest problem. There was no difference in
handling that I could detect. I can't wait to put some more Kms on it!

I'd like to thank the list members whose bikes have inspired these builds.
In particular, the photos and descriptions of Amit's, Kelly's, René's and a
couple of other Bombadils on Flickr whose parentage I'm not certain of have
been most helpful.

Cheers!

Tom
