[RBW] Re: 30 km and 68 stream crossings ( better photos)
This was perhaps the most fun ride I have ever done. I looked on the OSM bike map for the area and discovered that the creek intersects a major road 6 km farther upstream, so perhaps we'll try to ride up the creek all the way next time, but I'll think I'll switch to the Fisher with its 50mm tires for that. Gernot Thailand On Mar 1, 10:11 am, Manuel Acosta manueljohnaco...@hotmail.com wrote: This is awesome! I wish I know more creeks the movies look fun! On Feb 27, 5:32 pm, Earl Grey earlg...@gmail.com wrote: Paul on his Sam Hillborne and I re-rode the trail we discovered two weeks ago, but this time shortened the approach by driving his truck about 15km south of town so that we could explore a bit further before I had to get back to teach yoga. Paul also brought along his friend Rob, who borrowed my 1991 Gary Fisher Sphinx 29er (not a typo). Actually it was sold back then with 38mm knobbies and drop bars as a monstercross (another category that didn't exist in '91), but recently I put some Jones H-bars and XC Comp thumb shifters on for more technical off-road riding, and 50mm Marathon XRs. Photos start here:http://www.flickr.com/photos/gernothuber/page2/ We skipped the long dirt mountain pass, and rolled up the little remote valley in beautiful warm morning light, made even softer by the high air pollution from burned-off fields and forest understory. We zoomed past the Wat and were able to get more than twice as far up the dirt trail this time, and hit 68 instead of 30 stream crossings. We once again had to turn around because of time constraints, as we spent too much time taking photos, but by the time we turned around, the trail was mostly non-existent, running straight up the creek bed for hundreds of feet at a time, with only occasional on-land sections. But occasional ATV tire tracks where the trail entered and exited the creek showed us that it is actually in use, and that the locals really just drive up the creek. A few times the water was deep enough to submerge the hubs, but we kept going. Coming back down the trail, without stopping for photos, took us 35 minutes, during which we crossed the creek 34 times, so not quite one crossing per minute! Back on the road, once again racing against time, I almost ran over a 6 to 7 foot snake of unidentified species. I am pretty sure it was neither a cobra nor a python, but that's about all I can say. It looked grey with longitudinal stripes. It came out of nowhere crossing the road just in front of me, and braking with all I had I stopped less than a foot from it. Fortunately it just wanted to get away. Once again the Hetres on my rSogn did great, only failing on steep slick clay exits out of the creek. [RBW] Re: FS: Spring Cleaning, Small Parts
***Updated with items sold, price drops. Bike Parts for Sale Hi all, just starting the process of culling the closet, first step small parts, some rivish stuff, some just beater stuff. drop me a line if you’re interested in anything and we can try and work it out. I’m in the Washington DC area. All prices below are paypal, and shipping is included. if you buy more then one item then i will combine shipping as best as i can, there is a photoset here - http://flic.kr/s/aHsjynTADG 1 Pair Nashbar Sidepulls, short reach (39mm-49mm), silver colored with minimal miles (less then 300) plenty of life left in the pads. $20 1 pair Nashbar Canti-brakes, black, very similiar to the Tektro Oryx brake (look at the pictures and you decide) less then 100 miles, these use the link-wire type straddle cable. $16 Nitto S-65 Seatpost, 27.2, marks around the insertion line but otherwise good condition, see picture. $45 Tektro Oryx (silver) - light surface rust on some of the bolts and some scratches on the brakes but work fine, just took this off my quickbeam. uses the z-wire, pads are nearly gone, i would suggest you replace them right away. $8 Shimano LX V-Brake, pads are about 50% and are koolstop black. $12 Axciom Rear Rack - i believe this is the Phoenix DLX model, which includes the ‘bamboo’ top plate. i had to cut the stays because they were too long, this came off a ~58cm 700cc bike so if you’re in that range you’ll be ok. if you need p-clamps please let me know and i can include a pair. just so you know the tubing on this rack is a little thick so some pannier hooks will not hook on, the gap in the top-plate is also narrow, so your pannier hooks will need to be pretty close together. see the picture from above. $40 Huret Stem mount friction shifters, NOS with cables and housing, $12 Cork Grips (the old style, smooth ones) $10 Kalloy Uno Seatpost, 27.2 tons of scratches and insertion marks. $5 (item is free this is to cover shipping) Shimano Rear Derailleur, like this one here http://velobase.com/ViewComponent.aspx?ID=b16dcdc3-05a0-4e48-a977-eb02cebd41e6 max cog is 28t, good condition. $18 Sakae Crankset, quite a bit of pitting, i started to do a sand and polish but ran out of bikes to mount this to, rings are in good shape 52/42 teeth. $12 (item is free this covers the shipping). Tektro CR720 - light surface rust on some of the bolts and some scratches on the brakes but work fine, just took this off my quickbeam. includes the fancy straddle carrier (also with a little bit of rust) pads are dual-compound koolstops with about 50% left. $15 Zefal frame pump, my bikes are in the 56-58 size range, so i think this is a medium pump, $15 Suntour Lite front derailleur, this is from the RBW batch a long time ago, it’s for oversized seat-tubes, hence the bar tape in the picture, you can use other forms of shimmage (like a rubber tube), i’ve used a shimmed FD on another bike for 10 years no problem. This one was mounted and used for only a few weeks so very light use. $12 Minoura Kickstand - the old style that bolts onto the rear of the bike near the dropouts, $20 Wheelset, Quickbeam Standard Wheelset, Suzue quick-release cartridge bearing hubs. The rear hub is double sided, threaded for freewheels on both side, quick-release front and back. Araya Rims. I bought the quickbeam second hand so not sure about the age of these wheels, it’s an early green quickbeam, they look to be in good shape. $120 for the set, I’d like to sell this locally as the shipping will be high relative to the value of the wheels, but make me an offer, will split too.* On Friday, February 24, 2012 9:51:02 PM UTC-5, Minh wrote: *Hi all, just starting the process of culling the closet, first step small parts, some rivish stuff, some just beater stuff. drop me a line if you’re interested in anything and we can try and work it out. Re: [RBW] WTB/try/ect 650B wheels
Yes, they are close to bridge and they droop forward some too probably due to the old daruma I'm playing with. I found the daruma on an old set of fenders a friend used on PBP in 1991. I will re-rivet the angle bracket back on soon. I think they are P55 originally used with 26x1.5 and later with 559x47 Pasellas (that only inflated to 42 mm). They fit the Hetres okay. The conversion to 650b works fine for this 56cm Atlantis. I now have a 58cm, 26 inch wheel LHT that is my touring bike now and I'm happy this frees up the Atlantis for Hetre play. I will ride this next month at Riv Rally East. On Mar 1, 2012, at 10:15 AM, Peter Morgano wrote: Looks sweet with the red Hetres, what size fenders are those? The Hetres that I can now use on my 56 cm Atlantis are a joy. On Feb 29, 2012, at 9:35 PM, frank_a wrote: In a conversation with Grant a few years ago, I mentioned trying that with my 56 Atlantis. March came in with a roar here in Chicago with the delivery of a new-to-me Quickbeam! (Thanks Mike!) Had time enough to get it in the stand and throw on a few bits. Love it! Congratulations, Marty. Good photos to be proud of for a long time. I know you will love it. The Albatross bars will be great for single speed or fixed. Nice packing job by Mike, too. [RBW] Re: WTB/try/ect 650B wheels
Beautiful. Looks darn near perfect! I often wonder if Grant were to design the Atlantis now instead of 1998ish if he would use 650B over 26. Sweet - what size is that? A 66cm? Perfect for Chicago! And I like your simple bike stand, I've been hankering to put together something similar, with basic black pipe and a cam-lock on a swivel plate. - Andrew, Berkeley -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Last chance to connect with like-minded Riv-heads. ANYONE else gonna make it to the show? If you do, try to make yourself known. A pin, a t-shirt, a hat. Maybe you're a Yehuda look-alike. [RBW] Weight
I have a 64cm road bike and I just made the mistake of weighing it. 35 lbs. THIRTY. FIVE. It seems astronomical but is it? It's not like I have a dutch city bike (well it IS Dutch but a touring bike). Is 35lbs excessive? I kept my pump, an acorn bag, patch equipment and tools and fenders all on it.
