[RBW] Re: Don't read if you don't like heresy (a.k.a. my new road bike which isn't a Rivendell)

2012-03-08 Thread Philip Williamson
Fantastic service. Wow.
And here's an illustration of how the frame can "float" between your
contact points. Based on frame angles, bikes with the same tube
lengths can fit very differently, and bikes with very different tube
lengths can fit the same. The bizarro-world of non-intuitive
relationships:

As for measuring bikes, I wish it could be standardized at CtC.

Not really stars aligning. First they selected an earlier date. I called back
and asked if it could be on May 31 to make it work with the rally. The woman I
talked to said no problem. I suppose GP might have something to say about it,
and plans frequently change for external reasons, but that's the plan for now.

[RBW] FS: Bridgestone X0-3 55cm

2012-03-08 Thread jinxed
I had this for sale previously and it was grabbed up...then the deal fell
through...then it was really close to Christmas...so I begged my in-laws to
keep it in storage for me till later in the year. (I'm having some
theft/safety issues with one of the neighbors I share garage space with. I
can no longer keep bikes out there.)

Time has come for me to get it moving.

Bike was purchased from a forum member maybe a couple years ago.

I believe it was pinned down as a 94. Size is 52cm c-t seat tube with a
55cm c-c top tube. Long and low.

It has the original RX100 cranks, derailleurs, hubs. Original Dia compe
cantis. I received it with the northroads/albatross style bar on it and
ended up running it this way. I did however source the correct (I think)
bar end shifters as original that will be included. They are a little
scuffed up but perfectly operational. I also have a soma mustache bar that
is optional. It currently has Deore thumb shifters and Shimano levers that
work really well with the bike. Tires are 26" Kenda's wire bead with a
reverse style tread. They work pretty well off road and roll smooth on the
pavement.

Bike is in good shape with some paint dings and decal flaking. No dents or
damage to the frame. Wheels could use a truing, and there is a slightly
bent spoke.

Seat is not included at this price. I have some flat bmx style pedals if
needed.

$500 and actual shipping within the US. Plus fees if using paypal.

[RBW] Re: Don't read if you don't like heresy (a.k.a. my new road bike which isn't a Rivendell)

2012-03-08 Thread William
size is in the eye of the beholder. Folks don't rant that a Medium at
Banana Republic and a Medium at Old Navy fit differently (OK, perhaps they
do).

Seriously though, Grant will tell you it all comes down to getting your
three contact spots in the right places. Feet, tuckus, hands. Where the
frame is floating in the middle is mainly just looks (which is more than
nothing, but less than everything)

Want to know what made me glad I gave money to Mike? When I told him I was
dwelling on the numbers, he sent me a Park branded fit chart pdf, and asked
me to fill it out for a bike that fit (in my case, the Hilsen). Critical
numbers were seat height, setback, reach, and bars below saddle. I did the
measurements and sent them in. Mike then took the numbers and first agreed
that the 59 was closest. Then he took *his* 59 and set it up with my seat
height, my setback (which meant putting a different seatpost on), my reach
(which meant putting a different stem on) and my handlebar below saddle
(which meant flipping spacers and such). He then photographed it and
emailed it to me, saying "this is what your setup is gonna look like".
I'd never had a shop do that for me. Heck, I thought I was pretty helpful
when I worked at a shop and I never did that.

[RBW] Hillborne sighting in Clarendon (No. VA.)- whose?

2012-03-08 Thread Joan Oppel
Uncommon sighting - I don't know why but there aren't that many of us riding around Northern Virginia on Rivendells, though more than I thought showed up a few weeks ago in response to the 'survey' question.  This was an orange Hillborne parked outside the new Trader Joe's, using 2 (!) ulocks to hold it to the bike rack.  Albatross with cork handles, 700c wheels, mini front rack with basket, Nitto rear rack, Brooks.  I too (frequently) use 2 locks on the Bleriot, ulock and cable.  It was very windy today - 35 mph gusts, so I had a sllloooww shopping trip.Joan

Thought you guys might get a kick out of this. I'm tempted to post some photos
of my Sam, but this project has been at the front of my mind until yesterday
when I finally finished it. This bike was passed down to my brother and wasn't
in the best shape after all these years. My goal was to bring it back as an
all-arounder city/camping/light touring bike.
Parts highlights include Mavic A719/XT wheelset, Nitto Periscopa stem, Soma
Moustache Bars, MKS Sneaker Pedals, Schwalbe Delta Cruiser 35c tires, Campy
clamp-on downtube shifters, Bontrager Inform saddle, and my favorite - the Gino
light mount with Fenix E21 flashlight.
If you look closely, you'll notice I pulled a Sheldon Brown brake routing swap
as well.

Crap, one could easily spend $5000 on a pile of panniers, and that pile

I'm ordering a Brompton bag from them. They make great stuff.

Also the bags made by Philosophy are excellent. I met Troy the owner of

[RBW] Re: Don't read if you don't like heresy (a.k.a. my new road bike which isn't a Rivendell)

2012-03-08 Thread William
FWIW, if Mike had handed me these bikes, and told me to resell them, I
would call my '59' a 58. It is 58cm from the center of the bottom bracket
to the top of the top tube along the seat tube. My '59' measures 59cm from
the center of the bottom bracket to the tippy top of the seat tube along
the seat tube. Since there's an external seat clamp, that spot on my tape
measure that is 59cm is an imaginary spot about 2/3 of the way up the seat
clamp. By my reckoning, it's a 58 and that's one of the myriad reasons I
bought it.

A very unusual sloping top tube on it. I've never seen that on a Rivendell
other than the newer Sams/Bombas/Hunqs. Depending on the tire clearance,
that would make an AWESOME drop-bar MTB!!! I wonder who built it. Pic of
the BB is craptastic, so can't make out if anything else is on it other
than the # posted by seller. With a JB paint job, it's post-Waterford
build, but w/out a letters in the code, don't know the builder.

"*Tweed Police*" - that's funny, especially when tied into the "Green

poke fun at yourself, or tolerate a bit of fun being poked at you, then
what's the point?

2012-03-08 Thread Bill M.
I use a Specialized Alias on my go-fast. Not cushy comfortable, but
it stays out of the way and doesn't give me any pain or numbness.

There's a new leather saddle just coming to market under the name
Rivet. They debuted at NAHBS and apparently they sold most of what
they brought. Two widths, one Swift-like (Diablo) and the other
B17ish (Pearl), and each will come in black, white or dark brown, and
with either steel or Ti rails. I bought a brown Pearl with Ti rails
at the show, but haven't ridden it more than around the block yet. I
think we'll be hearing a lot more about these.

William, congrats on the new bike. Yeah, those frames look great.
Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, I'm in-between sizes otherwise I
might be considering one of their frames to take the spot vacated by

right now you can get brakes free with frame purchase.

Tomorrow I'll pick-up my Surly CC frame which I've made some changes

[RBW] Specialized saddles

2012-03-08 Thread robert zeidler
Over the past few months I have tried these saddles (mostly Avatars in 143
and 155 widths),andcan only say.Wow!

These saddles are so supremely comfortable that w/ a couple of exceptions
for nicely broken Brooks, I will switch, over time, the entire fleet over
to them.

Yesterday I went a bit longer than I intended (72 miles,but a nice early
spring day), and while my legs were a bit knackered, everything else went
well. The highest compliment I can pay these saddles is that duting a ride
like this I never think about what I 'm sitting on, nor do I have to make
any position adjustments on the fly, they are that good.

I would highly recommend these to anyone having comfort issues. Never
thought I'd fine something better than Brooks or Selle Anatomica. Plus no
rain issues.

YMMV.
