Is the itinerary final yet? Is he coming to ABQ, NM? Why not???

Regarding books: how is Rework if anyone has read it? Perhaps I should
just order since they promise 3X my money back if I don't like it.

Must order Epidemic, Just Ride and BS. Perhaps Unfolding, too. Bought
WWGF on Kindle already (but it doesn't convince wholly me tho' it has
some convincing material).

Jim: is that axle assembly for Surly hubs available yet?

Re: [RBW] Re: Any truly appealing panniers I'm missing?

2012-03-09 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
My key consideration was the mounting mechanism of the pannier to the
rack. Both Ortlieb and Carradice have a secure mechanism where the
pannier is mounted with hooks to the rack and cannot fall off. I find
the mechanisms that involve bungee cords and such to be less secure
and more troublesome. For example, one time I hit a big bump and the
cord disengaged and the pannier fell off the bike! The hook fell into
my spokes and luckily the bungee broke before the spoke did.

I love my Carradice Super C pannier as a small pannier (front pannier)
and the great thing about Ortlieb panniers is that you can get a nice
bright yellow one for great visibility. My large panniers are Ortlieb
Sport Panniers.

Best,
Toshi

[RBW] Downtube Bosses

I'm trying to move to down tube shifters on a bike that doesn't have

[RBW] Re: Downtube Bosses

2012-03-09 Thread William
Yes your housing stops are most likely in the way.

Yes getting bosses put on by a frame builder is a solution.

You should probably scope that out first before you decide whether or not
you still want to do it. For example, most framebuilders won't work on
your frame unless it's been completely stripped down. Is it worth the
effort? Some frame builders have a pretty long backlog. Then there's the
cost. Once you know the details of how your framebuilder operates, then
everything else should fall into place.

I could just cut off the stops and install clamp on shifters. It wouldn't
preclude me from getting bosses put on at a later date.

[RBW] Re: Downtube Bosses

2012-03-09 Thread NickBull
Hi, HC,

You don't say what diameter downtube you have, nor how many cogs you want
to be able to shift. If it is a "standard" 28.6mm clamp size then there
are a number of alternatives.

I'm assuming that there is room on the downtube above the cable stops for
you to attach a clamp-on shifter. Then you can just run the cable through
the holes in the cable stops. I don't think that putting the clamp below
the cable stops would work so well because the shifter will get held up by
the cable stop and not be able to shift to the "last" gear.

If you're shifting 5, 6, or 7 cogs, then you can go on EBay and find
yourself the relevant used or NOS clamp-on shifter for your derailleur
pretty easily.

If you're trying to shift 8 or 9 cogs, then one strategy is to get a Huret
clamp that has been modified to work with Dura-Ace downtube shifters from a
guy who sells these clamps on EBay, search on item *170599854261.

*Another strategy is to get crappy SunRace 7-speed downtube shifters and
use the clamp for those with your Dura-Ace downtube shifters.

Thanks, Toshi. If I remember the Carradice system from the --- senile
mental fart: forget the -- aha! Kendalls! -- If I remember those properly
the C system was a bit less bulky than Ortlieb's; I had to grind the outer
hook covers down on my Packers and smaller front packers to clear the
fatter 1.35 Kojak when fitting them to the very minimalist Chauncey
Matthews rear rack.

I must check the Carradices if and when I next buy some. Meanwhile the
Ortliebs are very, very nice.

Re: [RBW] Re: Downtube Bosses

2012-03-09 Thread PATRICK MOORE
That's the approach I highly recommend: taking sharp cutting tools (even
better, power tools) to a nice frame.

Seriously -- Steve Palincsar's opinion notwithstanding (hiya, Steve!) --
it's not hard to remove cable housing stops; I've done so several times,
successfully. Use a Dremel to cut and smooth, then do the finishing by hand
with a fine flat file. I stripped five or six stops, not to mention rear
canti bosses and derailleur hangar tab, from a nice old early '90s Diamond
Back mtb to make me a 60" geared fixed off road bike. After I filed and
sprayed with rattlecan, I could not see any attachment marks.

(I'm looking at cutting the tt stops off my #3 custom Riv -- no rear brake.
Mh!)

(Even funner is using a hammer to get a frame to fit cranks or tires it was
not meant for -- have done that too, successfully -- tho' I'd draw the line
at the Riv.)

Ryan, the best bet might be to use a nice set of clamp on dt shifters. It
might line up right that the clamp is held up by the stops. I used to have
a dura ace set from the 70s. Suntour, campy, etc all make high end clamp on
shifters.

[RBW] Re: Book tour and Midwest RBW Rally update

2012-03-09 Thread grant
Notes about book tour: The pub, not me, sets up the schedule, and I
just go along. It's not clear to who pays---my contract doesn't
address that, and I've been assuming the pub pays, but on the Ultimate
Source for Info on Everthing (internet/google), it kind of says yeah,
maybe you, maybe them, just depends. So...if it IS me, then it will be
an even shorter tour---but I will certainly make it to any Rivrelated
venues. If it's them, I'll go to Austin & other places. No, not
talking at Mellow Johnny's. I'd get kicked out of there real fast.

Anyway, I'll find out Monday who pays. It's a good publisher, the
opposite of Rinky Dink, and I've been treated well from the start. I
have that kind of faith...but I long for verification.

[RBW] An oft-owned Bombadil seems to be for sale again

2012-03-09 Thread William
My understanding of the history is that jinxed owned it, and williwoods
owned it. Last year williwoods had to fight and scratch to sell it, and
maybe he did finally succeed. Here's that old thread:

https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!searchin/rbw-owners-bunch/bombadil$20for$20sale/rbw-owners-bunch/cyWi-nqvSe0/wm3I2elhgM4J

Now that identical frame and fork appears to be for sale on ebay

http://www.ebay.com/itm/190648713986?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_559wt_1344

using the identical photos. Low starting price $900, but the seller claims
it's 2003 model, which I don't think is possible. I don't know if it's
even on the up and up, but even if it is, that Bomba has had lots of owners
by now.
