Wow, are you serious? Have you actually seen or experience a chain "flying
apart" in this manner? In my 25+ years of riding, I've had chains come
break, but I never saw a chain fly apart like what you described. Of
course, there's always a first!

In any event, if you *think* this is going to happen, I recommend you stay
far away from these chains. Good Luck!

[RBW] Re: Chain deal ... ?

2012-05-24 Thread Benz
That nonchalantness only applies to the durability factor. They're not
single-speed chains so they will experience lateral forces during
shifts and when run cross-chained. So I'll be more worried about the
things flying apart and me suddenly being able to hit the high notes
than wearing out those chains prematurely, not that I'm saying that
those chains are unsafe...

Re: [RBW] Re: Bosco bars have arrived...

2012-05-24 Thread Olivier Chetelat
Friends of fine cycles,
I made a slight detour on my way to work this morning and picked up a bar
from the Bosco kind at the Rivendell HQ. The aluminum model measuring 58cm.
It will grace a 64 cm Atlantis with a 62 cm top tube. I'm looking forward
to the reduced distance between grips and saddle and the few inches of
additional rise.
The bosco will replace a well loved Albatross this evening. I will document
the process and post a link on this thread as well as first impressions.

May you all have a sunny day,

Olivier

Being a pompous bore for a minute, it cannot be 571x28c. It could be 571x28,
or it could be 650x28c. "c" is not a shorcut abbreviation for "mm", it
distinguishes between 650A, 650B and 650C, also between 700A, 700B (both now
obsolete) and 700C.

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 32s on a Romulus

2012-05-24 Thread Greg
I use the Jack Brown Blues on my '91 Bridgestone RB-T for commuting.
Before that I ran the Supremes in 32mm and, before that.Jack Brown
Blues.
I switched back to the Jacks because, like Brett, I found they were
smoother rolling but also faster on pavement than the Supremes. In
spite of them being wider.
When you roll a set of Supremes across a polished stone floor, they
rumble and you can feel it through your handlebars.
A couple folks replied that their experience was different and they
thought Supremes had it over Jacks.
Welleverybody to their own kick and I reckon there's no accounting
for taste.
But after back to back runs, I'm staying with Jack's in Blue.

Re: [RBW] 650C Tire question: Michelin Pro 3 Race versus Conti GP 4000 versus Conti GP Triathlon; others?

2012-05-24 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Thanks, John. I would go with 28s if I knew they were supple and light
and fast. A Google search for reviews of the Urbana turned up zilch.
Does anyone know anything about these tires?

Note that the '99 Gofast is just that; I don't have any need to ride
off-pavement on this bike; I've got others for that purpose. Light,
supple and fast are what I want.

Commentary: I ride short distances, and I want to pack as much riding
fun into those short distances as I can. I hate, hate HATE heavy,
thick-walled, doggy, sluggish tires: I've ridden them and I know what
they feel like. I'd rather fix a flat-a-ride than ride such tires.
Hell, I'd rather give up cycling and take up walking -- seriously.
This is the reason for my iconoclastic wish for light, fast, supple
tires for the '99 Joe, and not a wish to irritate or contradict the
general preferences on this list for fat tires. Hell, on my Fargo, I
consider 50 mm tire skinny -- wouldn't touch them. (Goddam wimpy
narrow useless things -- try riding skinny, hard 50s at 40 psi in our
RG bosque sand -- *You'll* see!).

'Cording to Google, our local REI has the Conti Gp 4000s for $56 ...

Being a pompous bore for a minute, it cannot be 571x28c. It could be
571x28, or it could be 650x28c. "c" is not a shorcut abbreviation for
"mm", it distinguishes between 650A, 650B and 650C, also between
700A, 700B (both now obsolete) and 700C.

Subject: [RBW] 650C Tire question: Michelin Pro 3 Race versus Conti GP 4000
versus Conti GP Triathlon; others?

That's 650 SEE, not BEE; they are for the '99 Joe gofast fixed gear.

Anyway, Nashbar has these all on sale, but the 4000s are still $67 while the
MP3s are just $37, the Tris (what the heck is a triathlon tire, anyway?) is
$40. All weigh about the same and all are folding but Conti claims tpi of 330
while the Ms are just 127. I don't know if any of this is relevant to anything,
but there it is.

I want a light and supple tire that is not too flat prone and something that
rides as well as the now rather worn GPs (pre "3000," I
think) from some years ago or, for that matter, my benchmark for small, fast
tires, the 559 Specialized Turbos.

Have any of you used any of these? Any recommendations? I'd go wider if I could
-- 26 perhaps -- but AFAIK there are no *good* 571 tires in anything but 23. I
don't want the Terry Telus; if I have to go wide I'd prefer to rebuild to 559
and use Kojaks. I don't pinch flat; never, when I run 22s or 23s at 85/90 or so
and they ride cushy enough for me. And I can tell the difference between the
old Conti GPs and even the very nice Kojaks.

Any other suggestions for other fast, supple 650C tires also welcome.

Thanks.

Re: [RBW] Re: Chain deal ... ?

2012-05-24 Thread Brewster Fong
No, but they're silver and look pretty good. However, if you link removable
links, they call it a Q-link, just make sure to order them at the same
time! I didn't realize the Qlinks were separate and now the cost of 4
replacement is equal to shipping! Its still pretty cheap, but why pay extra
when you can get everything shipping at once.

Further, even if its not "as good" as name brand, its still a consumable
and at $3 each, changing them isn't going to burn a hole in your
pocket!. You just have to do it more often. Good Luck!

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 32s on a Romulus

2012-05-24 Thread BrettG
Last winter after getting several flats in the rain on my VO Rando
bike
I put on some Supreme 32s as a temporary replacement for Grand Bois
Cypress
as the width is close to the same (the Supreme 32s measure about 30 or
31mm).

I also have a Romulus with Jack Brown blues (measure 33mm) and
frankly
having ridden the Supremes I definitely prefer the Jack Browns on my
Romulus. I've never had a flat in over 3 years of using the Jack
Brown
blues on my Romulus. The Jack Browns are more comfortable, more
attractive
and produce less road noise that the Supremes. I've also used the JB
greens with success. The Jack Browns and Grand Bois Cypress tires are
by
far my favorite tires, it's just that the Grand Bois tires have been
more prone to flats.

Re: [RBW] Re: 650C Tire question: Michelin Pro 3 Race versus Conti GP 4000 versus Conti GP Triathlon; others?

2012-05-24 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Didn't realize that they were so cheap at Riv or Boulder for that
matter; always thought that B 17s were quite expensive, so $108 seemed
cheap. Don't ride them myself.

OK, so we've taken care of B 17s. What about those Michelin Pro Race 3
Lites or whatever the heck they are?

[RBW] 650C Tire question: Michelin Pro 3 Race versus Conti GP 4000 versus Conti GP Triathlon; others?

2012-05-24 Thread PATRICK MOORE
That's 650 SEE, not BEE; they are for the '99 Joe gofast fixed gear.

Anyway, Nashbar has these all on sale, but the 4000s are still $67
while the MP3s are just $37, the Tris (what the heck is a triathlon
tire, anyway?) is $40. All weigh about the same and all are folding
but Conti claims tpi of 330 while the Ms are just 127. I don't know if
any of this is relevant to anything, but there it is.

I want a light and supple tire that is not too flat prone and
something that rides as well as the now rather worn GPs (pre "3000," I
think) from some years ago or, for that matter, my benchmark for
small, fast tires, the 559 Specialized Turbos.

Have any of you used any of these? Any recommendations? I'd go wider
if I could -- 26 perhaps -- but AFAIK there are no *good* 571 tires in
anything but 23. I don't want the Terry Telus; if I have to go wide
I'd prefer to rebuild to 559 and use Kojaks. I don't pinch flat;
never, when I run 22s or 23s at 85/90 or so and they ride cushy enough
for me. And I can tell the difference between the old Conti GPs and
even the very nice Kojaks.

Any other suggestions for other fast, supple 650C tires also welcome.

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: odd knocking sound on front end - ideas?

2012-05-24 Thread Jeremy Till
Yes, another vote for loose headset. They can be hard to see on a cursory
inspection, esp. if it's just a little loose, but what you're describing is
exactly behavior I would expect from one. What i do is lock the front
wheel with the brake, put my stomach on the seat to weight the bike, and
try rocking back and forth. The only other time it was anything else, in
my experience, is when I was assembling a cheap cruiser and there was a
similar knocking, but it was a poor-fitting stem quill rocking back and
forth in the steerer.

You might also check your wheel bearings--try moving the wheel side to side
in the fork to see if there's any lateral play.

[RBW] Re: front derailleur cage tweaking

2012-05-24 Thread Jeremy Till
Yeah, I concur with what others have said. If it's not far in enough with
the limit screw all the way out and the cable slack, you've got the wrong
derailleur. It's true that contemporary MTB triples are much farther out
than an XD on a 107mm BB would be, so that's probably the issue. I'd try a
road-type derailleur, whatever Riv recommends for that setup.

Hmmm. The original bar famous for stuffed hamburgers in the Twin
Cities is Matt's on Cedar Ave in Minneapolis, "Home of the Jucy
Lucy". Could this be the place? Except a waiter is rare--if ever--
mostly it's waitresses. If it isn't the place, put it on your list
'cause it's the real deal. Total dive bar with 60's era gold vinyl
wall paper and home-made brass-and-wood duck art hanging on the
walls. The cheese is so hot that they refer to it as a "molten core"
and it's standard policy for waitresses to ask if you've had one
before. If you haven't, detailed instructions for how to eat it are
provided so that you don't burn yourself from the molten lava-cheese.
The standard beverage is a Grain Belt Premium–or just "a Premium" but
they recently added Blue Moon in some absurd attempt to class the
joint up. Matt's is in my 'hood and responsible for the 10 pounds I
added the first year I moved to Minneapolis.

Riv content: nope, all my Saluki/Proto communting has not taken off
my year of Juicy Lucys.

RE: [RBW] Extended commute

2012-05-24 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
Eric:

Actually, I was under the impression that the tubesets were the same -- but the
Quickbeam definitely feels more nimble than the S1, I'm guessing mostly because
of the tires (and maybe the build). The QB is on Jack Brown Greens, which I
think are both cushy and fast-feeling, and it typically has only the Country
Bag on the back, which limits the load. (It also used to have a
Platrack/Slickersack combo, which I loved but don't need now that the S1 is my
primary commuter). The SimpleOne is on fat Marathon Supremes (great tire, too,
but not as quick-feeling as the JBs), has what Patrick M characterized
(correctly) as a 1964 Buick trunk (in the form of a Large Saddlesack) AND a
densely packed Lil' Loafer (tools, tubes, etc) on the front, and has very wide
Noodles on a Dirt Drop stem (as opposed to the 44 Noodles and lugged stem on
the 'beam). Also, the S1 has a wider sprung saddle (a B67). Taken together,
they all make the Quickbeam feel zippier -- but the S1 definitely doesn't feel
like a slouch, either.

And one thing the SimpleOne did for me was better dial in my fit. I had been
riding a variety of bikes for 4 years or so (since I got back into riding) with
saddles set at just around 79 to 80 cm (170mm to 175mm cranks; I have an 87
PBH). One of my sons rode the SimpleOne on Riv Rally East, and we set the
saddle about 2 cm lower for him. I forgot to readjust it when I hopped back on
the bike, noticed it right away but was in a hurry to get to work, and so rode
the 5 miles to work at the lower saddle height. By the time I got there, I was
thinking, "Why did I ever thinkI was comfortable before?" Almost a revelation.
I've moved every one of my saddles down about 1 to 1.5 cm, and every one is
more comfortable, with no noticeable reduction in efficiency.

Re: [RBW] front derailleur cage tweaking

2012-05-24 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Q doesn't relate (much*) to proper ring position with flared cranks.

Bending the derailleur cage can lead you into a vast thicket of trial
and error and more error until you finally die howling in frustration
and anguish, but perhaps one could think of bending the outer forward
tip of the d cage just a wee bit.

*Q is affected largely by arm flare. That's why you can have a 145 mm
bb and a 160 mm Q, or a 113 mm bb and a wider Q on the same bike with
different crank designs (as I've done).

Re: [RBW] front derailleur cage tweaking

2012-05-24 Thread René Sterental
I think you need a wider BB. AFIK, the XT derailers are not such a good fit
for the Sugimo cranks since they expect the wider Q from the Shimano modern
MTB cranks.

A new compatible derailer from Riv would be the other option I'd suggest
if you want to preserve the current BB.

I would caution against doubling up the shim on one side. You'll loose the
roundness of the internal surface and the pressure on the seat tube would
be uneven.

My RBW invoice lists my Rom frame at 61.

Um, a bit off topic, but ...

I have what I think is a 56 Romulus. Usually sizes are at least 2
apart, so did they do Roms in 54, 56, 58 etc., at one time and 55, 57,
59 etc. at another time?

[RBW] Re: Thinking of switching handlebars on my AHH

2012-05-24 Thread Jay LePree
Hi Rex,

Sorry I do not have pictures, but they bars look great. The brake
levers feel very solid from all points (front to tips). In fact, they
feel more powerful than the Ultegra drop bar levers that I had on the
noodles. I wrapped them with cork tape from the end to within 2
inches of the stem.

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 32s on a Romulus

2012-05-24 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
I have the 32s on my Sam.
Pretty much as advertised - good combination of speed and puncture
resistance for about $60 a tire.
I did get one puncture a while back, following which I filled my rear
tube with sealant.
