[RBW] Wtb: rear rack

2012-06-17 Thread Ryan Ray
The old aluminum rack that came with my 1989 touring bike really
failed me at the all night bike scavenger hunt here in Seattle this
weekend. I'm looking for one with good pannier supports where the bags
won't slam into your fender stays if go over some big bumps. I don't
care about cosmetic condition and HOPE to get one for around 50 bucks.

Re: [RBW] Summer plans?

2012-06-17 Thread cyclotourist
Interestingly enough, my summer plans are to head up to beautiful sunny
Portland (Minneapolis West) with the fam. Just spent a couple weeks down by
the beach ("shore" for you East Coast folks) where I did a lot of 29er

tireMTB
adventuresand
now have a week off before a work conf. in Sacramento (anyone around
to
say hi?). Then a few weeks full of keeping three kids under 10 from leaving
permanent marks on each other, leading to a aforementioned mid-July trip up
north to PDX.

Was going to be me + one kid, but looks like the entire brood plus spouse
are going to attempt it. Will be interesting to say the least. So if any of
you PDX people are available are available mid-July, would love to say hi,
drink a beer at Hopworks, ride Forest Park, probably timed around the July
22nd Parkway extravaganza.

That and hang out at the community pool!!!

2012-06-17 Thread Peter Morgano
I think if i get 2 years out of a speedo at a cost of 60 bucks I have
gotten my money's worth, I wouldnt spend more than that on some fancy
cadence setup which I know are out there. It is just one of those things
that wears out I find, like tires and handlebar wrap. I think that too
often we think things should last "forever" when they take alot of abuse.
Not that something should be total crap but there should be a reasonable
level of wear that I have come to accept out of some things on a bike.

I hope the head unit is rechargeable and has a big battery. Analog
displays are cool and all, but they're energy hogs, especially for
dials and counters. And I'm not any the electronic bell can simulate

Re: [RBW] Re: Summer plans?

2012-06-17 Thread Michael Hechmer
The number one plan is just to have fun, with as little planning as
possible! Enjoying the back roads of Vt right now and getting in shape to
tackle a few mountain passes. We had planned to take the Bilenky Tandem to
England for a tour of the Cotswald, but the Olympics made England sound
crowded and an early Spring trip to Switzerland thinned out the budget.
We're still thinking of the car free trails in Minnesota. Granddaughter
due in El Cerrito on Oct 6th. May bring a bike with me to Ca. in early Nov.

[RBW] stuff for sale!

2012-06-17 Thread Brent Hughes
Hello!

I'm getting ready to relocate and need to sell some things from my
parts box. Prices don't include shipping. I can email some pictures if
you'd like!

Here's what I have for sale:

Nitto Mark's Rack ($75, OBO): Comes with all the mounting hardware.
Only alteration is the front diving board plate was pounded flat to
better fit on my cantilevered bike. Riv sells replacement front diving
plates for $12.

Silver shifters with cables ($70, OBO): New and unused, got them for a
bike project that isn't going to happen for a while. Still in their
plastic bag (that now has some grease on it by virtue of sitting next
to my grease tube.

Carradice Nelson Longflap Saddlebag ($90, OBO): Excellent condition,
no tears or rips, replaced the leather straps that attach to the
brooks saddle. Used intermittently for commuting and camping, so the
bag has only very minor signs of wear. Asking $90 + shipping, or best
offer.

Velo Orange Stems ($20 each, OBO): 90mm +/- 17 degrees and 120mm +/- 6 degrees.

Newbaum Orange Tape (3 rolls) and Newbaum Grey Tape (2 rolls)

Re: [RBW] Mary Bar/Technomic stem incompatible?

2012-06-17 Thread Joe Broach
It seems to be accepted practice to spread closed face stems a little
to insert the bars. There is/was actually a special "stem pry" tool
made for the purpose. Jan Heine has a neat trick to accomplish the
same with bolt+nut+coin:

http://janheine.wordpress.com/2012/01/17/inserting-a-handlebar-into-a-stem/

Those Mary bars seem like a steal. I picked up an aluminum and a cr-mo
set to try. Be warned, the cr-mo finish is bead blasted and feels like
sharkskin--not exactly the "chrome finsih" advertised. Not that i'm
complaining for $20. Report back on how you like the Marys!

I'm going to try to get in an S24O or greater in when summer starts in

[RBW] Mary Bar/Technomic stem incompatible?

2012-06-17 Thread velomann
I'm building up a Lugged 93 Trek 750 hybrid as an all-purpose
garvel/pavement bike. Had a brilliant idea to use the shiny silver On-One
Mary bar (on sale) with the used 25.4 Technomic stem I just picked up. So
excited! Until I tried to thread the bend near the clamp. Not a tight bend,
but the bar bulges right after the last bend. No go. Didn't try forcing it.
and haven't tried spreading the stem at all. Thought I'd seek advice first.
Anyone else tried this combo (or a Mary bar with a quill stem) and got it
to work? Any tricks (I mean other than telling me I need a stem with a
faceplate)? Other alternative might be to go with same stem and Moustache
bar, but I really want to give the Mary a try first.

2012-06-17 Thread RoadieRyan

That is a beauty, always loved the orange Sams and I am not a fan of the
double TT so the single has that classic look. I was fortunate enough to
visit Rivendell while in SF on business a while ago and test rode a Sam,
when I got back I told Grant " Why do you tell people this thing is heavy!
its light and sporty man"; Definitely a smile inducing ride.

[RBW] Re: Any NE Ohio Rivs?

2012-06-17 Thread Rob
I grew up in Mentor, and as a kid (in the '60's) used to ride my Raleigh
3-speed and then later Gitane 12-speed out toward the Arboretum in Kirkland
or to the spring on Wisner Road. We once took an epic (for
16-year-olds) 50-mile ride from Mentor to Pymatuning Lake. Lovely area to
ride bikes. I come back about once a year to visit my sister in
Painesville, but sadly never with a bicycle in tow.

week of Autumn, I'm planning to lead a band of excursionists along the dirt

Good looking bike! Rides great over coarse roads too, especially when you
don't air your tires up rock hard.
