[RBW] FT: Nitto Deluxe stem (new, in bag) for your Technomic.

2012-09-03 Thread lungimsam
I have a brand new, sealed in plastic bag, Nitto Deluxe stem. It says
"Deluxe 13" on the stem. Barcode labels are on bag. Says 22.2/60/130 140 on
the labels.
It measures 135mm from center of expander bolt head to dead-center middle
of the handlebar clamp. I guess this means it is a 13cm stem? 14? 13.5?

I need a Technomic that measures 95mm, same dimension. Doesn't have to be
new in bag. But would like something in new shape. Never crashed/impacted.
Original parts.
The one I have now is 85mm. Need a smidge longer.

I am a little confused, as I am not sure how Nitto stems are to be
measured. But this is the dimension I am using for the trade info.

[RBW] Re: Mystery Bike Test Ride

2012-09-03 Thread grant
Four are still in paint. Three are painted here, one has been assembled and
needs to be boxed and shipped, and not everybody's on the Forum. The
bike...to me, is astounding. I just love how it feels, everything it does.
It's not a sportsy bike or the kind of bike that---well, at some point
we'll have a production model (meaning I think it is a good design). The
specials have a Riv badge and a Protovelo decal---although Thomas's went
out before decaling, so I sent him a decal and instructions. All of the
specials get a single top-mounted decal on the diagatube.

Switched to a new set of brake levers (purchased from another member on this
list), so this set of very lightly used levers from my Rivendell Road Standard
is up for sale. DiaCompe levers designed for aero cable routing.

$17 shipped in the CONUS.

$2 discount to anybody who can tell me what the plastic knob that screws onto
the front part of the lever is for.

[RBW] Re: New "budget" Riv in Summer 2013?

2012-09-03 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Seems like a great idea, since the Bombadil f/f is $3k, and the
intended-budget-Bomba Hunqapillar isn't exactly an inexpensive alternative
at $1875. I know they are great frames that cost what great frames cost,
but it's gotta be a tough sell for a lot of potential buyers looking at a
complete bike price of at least $4k.

Lugs? Of course! A lugless Rivendell doesn't make any sense at all.
Disc-brakes? I seem to recall some early ruminations that the Bomba would
be disc-compatible. Having this new frame with a disc option and with
thread-in canti-posts may broaden the appeal. Retro-purists could always
just get one of the other models if the superfluous disc mounts are deemed
too offensive.

In any case, whatever it turns out to be: I like it!

2012-09-03 Thread Michael_S
a fat tire tourer! ... sounds like a winner to me. Hopefully with lugs and
cantilever brakes.

And maybe in a size I want to buy, as I'm between sizes on the
Hunqapillar, 54 too small for me ( I don't like tall stems and posts) , 58
too big in standover.

Looking forward to this one.

[RBW] Oh the Places We Go!

2012-09-03 Thread Liesl
I was just enjoying a lazy hot late afternoon Flicker Riv Group slide
show. Holy Moly, not only a fantastic group of beautiful bikes, but all
the adventure that Riv's and their Rivsters have just makes me grin!
Sunshine, rain, snow, fog, night, day; cities, countrysides, mountains,
glaciers; great lakes, oceansides, riversides; harbor and coves; state
parks, national parks, county parks, city parks; suspension bridges, girder
bridges, covered bridges; east coast, west coast, middle east, vietnam,
japan; hauling gear, hauling beer, hauling corn; front racks, rear racks,
no racks; paved roads, dirt roads, gravel roads, sandy roads, no roads, no
trails, rocks . . . and then there's this odd place everyone seems to go.
It's filled with bikes and smiling new bike owners and a curious dude in
wool socks and sandals, baggy nylon knickers, a cowboy shirt, and a visor.

It really makes me feel part of something truly wonderful.

thanks everyone,
Liesl

[RBW] Coral on my head

2012-09-03 Thread Kip Otteson
I had a student comment about bike helmets and he told me that he didn't
like all the helmets that looked like coral on people's heads. I don't
really like them either and this summer I bought a new helmet and I'm very
pleased with it. It's a Bern Watts and it is a much more substantial
helmet than the old Giro Atmos it replaced. It has a built in visor that
is very effective at blocking sun and rain. The visor is actually like a
shorty bill cap. Very cool. If you are looking for a new helmet I think
this one is right up the Rivish alley.

Re: [RBW] Re: New "budget" Riv in Summer 2013?

2012-09-03 Thread James Warren

Well, I didn't mention the issue of lugged versus tig, because I expect that
any Rivendell will be lugged.

And now that you bring it up, I'll point out that a beautiful lugged bike with
disc brakes would be pretty cool and a bit unique.

I'm not sure if the brakes would complicate fender attaching at the dropouts,
but at the fork crown and seatstay bridge, things would be a bit more free.

I remember reading on the blug about this frame about year ago(?) but can't

pipeline. It's fun to watch the design process unfold and I'm glad Riv
shares the process in the RR and blug to the extent they do.

I'm pretty sure the blug post said it wouldn't be tigged-if it's
Rivendell it must have lugs.. which makes pricing tough, but they won't
veer from lugs.

The Paul Racers have much better fender clearance than the Tektros. I have
them on my Bleriot and they offer oodles of room for Hetres and fenders.
I've even fit the Schwalbe Fatties and fenders under the Racers (not

[RBW] FS: Carnac Carlit Touring Shoes Size 46 (45)

2012-09-03 Thread Eric Norris
Riv-ish shoes with loads of French style. No cleats, no SPD, just
old-fashioned cycling goodness.

Bought these in unused condition and used them maybe twice. Going back to
cleated shoes, so these are for sale.

Excellent condition. A few very minor scuffs on the soles.

These are marked as size 46, but I usually wear size 45 and these fit me
perfectly.

$100 shipped in the CONUS.

Re: [RBW] Re: Carradice Bagman Questions

2012-09-03 Thread George Schick
Take a look at the bag heights that Peter lists on his web site and for the
Bagman, too. Then remember that your Bagman is going to sit about one and
a half inches lower than it normally would if mounted on an unsprung saddle
rail. This means that you might get by with a standard size Bagman (Sport
or whatever they call it) instead of an Expedition.

[RBW] Re: New "budget" Riv in Summer 2013?

2012-09-03 Thread charlie
Oh me too.I've been vexed over the decision to downsize and sell my
Simplone and Hillborne then convert my parts off my Surly Trucker to an
Atlantis or a 'Hunk' but I'm not totally sold on the 54cm size Hunk not
wanting so much seat post sticking up etc. and I like the double top tubes
of the Hillborne but desire a Riv frame to replace my Trucker but with
clearances for wider tires and really stout so I can ride it loaded at my
weight and still use it as a commuter/all purpose machine with lights etc.
but lugged (unlike my Trucker) which I like fit wise and all. Two G's for
an Atlantis is a tough pill to swallow but something like it would be a
close match to my Trucker as far as parts and fit. Guess you can't please
all the people all the time and Riv has quite a few models. We cyclist's
can be a picky bunch

Strange that the clearances are that tight. It's also pretty strange that
it can fit wider tires/fenders than the brakes can handle. (Tektro 559 I
assume?) Seems like cantilever brake mounts should have been more

Pre-select was used with the indexed stem shifters. IIRC, it had a
spring-loaded cable mounting bolt on the RD that allowed the rider to shift

[RBW] New "budget" Riv in Summer 2013?

I was looking at Rivendell's bike picker feature and under the price range
of the San Marcos, Hillborne and Betty Foy, there is a super heavy duty
tour bike listed for the Summer of 2013! I haven't seen this mentioned
here or in the blog but it's got me excited!! I've had my eye on a
Hunqapillar for some time but budgetary constraints make it unlikely I'll
ever get one. If RBW comes out with a budget Hunqa, which is what this
sounds like, then I will be really interested!

[RBW] Re: 1988 Suntour Small Parts Catalog, oddities

2012-09-03 Thread Jeremy Till
I imagine "pre-select" mechanism might be some kind of spring-loaded cable
anchor bolt, allowing the rider to move the shifter a couple of gears while
stopped, so the derailleur would shift immediately once they got going.
Shimano "light action" derailleurs from that era had the same feature.
Makes them damned difficult to adjust, however.

Re: [RBW] Re: Mystery Bike Test Ride

2012-09-03 Thread Jeremy Till
Never having touched a Paul Racer, * in theory * the Racer or any
dual-pivot centerpull should maximize clearance for a given brake reach,
since the dual-pivot centerpull configuration allows both arms to move up
they actuate the brake, rather than one pivoting down as is so on
dual-pivot sidepulls.

Re: [RBW] Re: Carradice Bagman Questions

2012-09-03 Thread Peter Morgano
Sure, I would love some pics. Do you think the expedition size bagman would
be overkill for the Pendle? I only ask since Peter White has a 30% off sale
so the expedition through them is the same price as the sport at Wallbike.
Also, has anyone seen the new Bagman they are selling at Ben's? I looks
like it would have better support, but a bit on the ugly side I feel. maybe
I am just being too picky?

[RBW] Re: Carradice Bagman Questions

2012-09-03 Thread Adam
I use the Flyer saddle with the bagman and a medium sized saddle bag from
riv with good results. Occasionally on a bumpy trail I might have to
tighten the bagman's primary attachment bolt but no problems with pocket
positioning.

Happy to send a photo if it would be helpful.

[RBW] Re: Carradice Bagman Questions

2012-09-03 Thread George Schick
Yes, I have a bike with a Brooks Champion Flyer that has a Bagman mounted
to the lower set of saddle rails along with a Carradice Barley bag hanging
from the bag loops. It works just fine and I've had it loaded with lots of
heavy cargo from time to time. If you stop and think about it, the Bagman
is fastened to the lower "fixed" set of rails while the bag hangs from the
loops on the rear saddle frame that sits on top of the springs. So when
you go bouncing over bumps and the springs compress, the load in the saddle
bag (that sits on the Bagman frame) simply stays in one place. And yes,
having the Bagman does make a big difference in the vertical positioning of
those pockets.

Well, I was going to wait till it was fully built -- fenders, racks, bags, the
works. But the inevitable glitches reared their ugly heads: 41mm Marathons
don't permit 52mm VO fenders, so tried terra cotta SOMA Xpress, which permit
the fenders, but then it turns out that the brakes aren't wide enough for the
fenders (and in any case Grant urged the EA group not to use tires < 38mm
(pedal strike issues), which may eliminate the ~35mm New Xpress rubber as a
solution. (Nice looking, though!). Before I remove the entire Mark's
Rack/Platracks/fender-mounted-with-daruma assembly to try them, does anyone
know whether Paul Racers have better fender clearance than the Tektro side
pulls on the bike now?

Anyway, maybe time to post a few shots without all the accoutrements, to prove
(as Manny would say) that the bike actually can be ridden!
