[RBW] Re: Sackville Saddlebags question...
I love my small saddle sack. It's failed me twice out of probably 100 trips. Both times I was loading it well outside it's intended limits. Once I tried to transport an oversize book under the flap and hanging out the sides... about a mile from my house it fell out in traffic and got run over buy a couple cars before a break in traffic big enough for me to run out and retrieve it. The other time I was carrying some grommet dies (small + heavy) and they put a crease in the coroplast. The crease is still visible in the coroplast but it sits flat unless I put a bunch of weight in there. Here's a shot of mine from a little ride this weekendhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/metron04/8172729307/... stuffed with a jacket, thermos of tea, tool roll, tube, and a few small daily carry items. Re: [RBW] Fenders and Rams
I have Longboards and Tektro Silver (not sure what R number those equate to) brakes on my orange Ram, and it works great with 28m Paselas. I've also put on 32mm Schwalbe Marathons for a trip on the CO Towpath, which worked fine too. The Schwalbes seemed a little tight, but I had no problems. Steve On Nov 10, 2012, at 10:58 PM, J L wrote: Ryan Some have installed longboards, or SKS fenders on their Ram but there are also many who were successful in installing metal fenders. There are a couple things one can do to improve the clearance for fenders. What brakes do you have? The stock Shimano brakes are nice at stopping but the Tektro 539s are a good upgrade because of how they are shaped. There more clearance in both caliper width (wider tire can be installed without deflating) and fender clearance. The second thing to try - if I understand correctly what you meant by mount the good way is to shorten the daruma bolt (a file used like a saw works well) then drill the mounting hole a little wider in order to use a recessed brake bolt in place of the nut. I worked with this same issue on my own Ram. I am very pleased with the Tektro brakes and although I got fenders to fit on the bike I never ride with them. [RBW] Re: Fenders and Rams
Ryan: I use the older Shimano calipers, earlier than Longboard SKS fenders and stick with 28 tires. I guess I could get the Tektro calipers, switch to metal fenders and try 32s. Two observations about that; first is that hair-splittingly close fenders will mysteriously begin rubbing the tire from as little provocation as sitting in the sun on one side too long (thermoplastic ones IME) or climbing up a big hill out of the saddle. The other irritating thing is packing up with mud as mine did on the CO Canal path one trip. I'm better off with an excuse to look at another frame to build up that can give me latitude into the 40s with tires. All the other stuff is all bonus to me. [RBW] Re: Fenders and Rams
Hi Ryan, I have a Blue Ram and after switching to Tektro 559s I use the SKS longboards with Panaracer Pasela 35mm tires. The front has very tight clearance but I got it to work. I also use the Sheldon fender nuts and I think that helps by moving the fender back a few centimeters. The heaviest items I carry in my Saddlesack Small are my U-Lock, and my Park multitool. Library books and such spread the weight fairly evenly when I use it for such purposes. [RBW] Re: Sackville Saddlebags question...
Andy, your Saddlesack looks smart on that bike...mine looks very similar. One of my frequent purchases is a c. 3-foot long loaf of Italian bread. On my old Little Joe bag, I could rig it up using the two leather straps, but the single strap of the Saddlesack called for a different solution. I use two of the Irish Straps to lash it to the closed bag, and all's well. Thinking I should find a frame mount for the cable lock...wondering if it's a bit heavy for the bag. Re: [RBW] 650b Ram + Hetres final update, added Mark's rack and fenders
No issues with the rack and bag. I carry the heavy tools etc. in the saddlebag and put clothes/food in the front. As a disclaimer, I am pretty impervious to minor handling differences because I ride tandems and triplets with my squirmy kids in the back. --Actually they are very good riders now and riding with them is very stable. [RBW] strange happenings
32mm Supreme flatted on the way home from work yesterday. It was the 1st big rain of the season which always makes for interesting conditions, so not a huge surprise. What was a surprise was what I found when I took the tire off. The no tube gunk I had put in the tube last winter had leaked into the space between tube and tire and made them one. No way to replace the tube. I found the leak - a 3/4 slash in the tire and fairly large hole in the tube - and peeled enough of the tube off the tire to fit a patch later. In any case I intended to replace the tire next time it flatted, so I installed the 37mm Supreme I had been saving for that purpose. Since I still had a 32 on the front, I assumed I would then need to raise the nose of my saddle. 2nd surprise, the nose was higher with the larger tire on the back of the bike. Go figure. A small adjustment to my sloppy fender position and I was good to go. New tire feels nice and cushy compared to the old one. The ride to my office took a bit longer than usual this morning, not sure if that's because of the rain or the lower pressure (70 vs 80-90 psi).
