[RBW] Re: Homemade Accessories for Bikes
I currently use a standard sewing machine so I'm limited to materials. It would be nice to work with leather but I'm not there yet.The machine I use now allows me to sew up to 5 layers of canvas or cordura, but after that, the needle tends to get stuck. In my experiences, it's almost better to use a thinner needle, shorter stitch length, and lighter thread when working with these fabrics. [RBW] FS 60cm Orange Sam Hillborne and extras
Among the last of the orange, single TT, side/centerpull Sams. I like this bike, it fits and has worked well for me, but it overlaps a lot with my Elephant http://www.elephantbikes.com National Forest Explorerhttp://flic.kr/s/aHsjCZ31E4, and I prefer the 650b and low trail geometry for country biking and light touring. I was thinking about keeping the Sam around as a dedicated touring bike, but I could use the money, the space, and the credit I would build with my wife for future bike purchases (The list: 62cm canti-Saluki, 64cm Atlantis, Pugsley, if anyone has one to sell or trade). It's a fairly standard Riv-ish build put together by The Country Bike Shop in Celina Ohio - XD2 crank w/ 11-34 cassette, xt/synergy wheels. technomic stem and 46cm noodles, cane creek levers, shimano bar-ends, generic seatpost. I upgraded (at least, I count it as an upgrade) to Paul center-mounted centerpulls (and therefore koolstop pads). Brushed silver longbard fenders. Jack Brown Greens. I've only had the bike for a year or two-ish but I used it, so there are some small paint chips etc. No big scratches I'm aware of and no dents. For all of that, no pedals, saddle, racks, I'm asking $1500 shipped. I'll have it boxed by my LBS. There are a few extras: Berthoud Aravis touring saddle. Barely used - maybe a few hundred miles, a total ass hatchet for me (I found Brooks saddles were comfortable from the start, by contrast). There are a few tooth marks from when I just opened the package, put it on the table, turned around to play with the kickflix bag clamp, and then found my dog had taken it down and started gnawing on the very foremost tip. I don't think it will effect function or longevity. $150 shipped. Mark's rack - just the stuff I used to mount it, don't have the extra p-clamps - $75 shipped. Nitto top rack - ditto re: mounting kit - $75 shipped Acorn Boxy Rando bag - no derailleur needed, has loops that go over the handlebars. Too small for me - could never reach it. But, perfectly functional. $150 shipped. I have a set of Shimano M324 pedals, $35 shipped. For all of the above, basically everything you need for a fully functioning country bike, I'd like $1900 shipped. I've tried to make prices reasonable, but if I've missed the mark, we can have a discussion about it. Cheers and I hope this bike finds a good home. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Anyone mounted taillights to Longboards?
I think the Spanninga's fender lights are great. They might not be the brightest, but they have a lens of a sort, triangular prism sort of thing, that disperses the light out to a larger area. I prefer non-blinking lights, as I find them much easier to actually gauge where a cyclist is. I use my blinkie-able lights in non-blinking mode as well. On Monday, November 26, 2012 1:19:41 PM UTC-6, William wrote: I bought three of these taillights at Jitensha Studio and mounted two of them. I put one onto hammered Honjos, and the other on a P45. Both seem great. You end up bolting it on very close to one of the stays, so it seems really solid. It's a very lightweight little light and has the really nice feature of an auto mode, which uses a Light sensor and a motion sensor to decide when to turn on. I think that's pretty slick for $16. The model I have does not blink. On Friday, November 16, 2012 10:13:27 AM UTC-8, William wrote: On my weekend errands I'm going to try to hit Jitensha Studio and pick up a couple of these Spanninga lights, with the intent of putting them on both plastic and metal fenders. [RBW] Brooks Flyer Saddle, Sugino AT Crankset, Suntour Cyclone MK II F/R Derailleurs, Etc
My last gasp, Hail Mary pass of a listing for things that need a home. I hop on a plane back to the antipodes early next week, so this stuff needs to be out the door on or by Monday. *All prices include CONUS shipping via USPS*. PayPal only, please and thanks. No trades or funny business. Pics of all the stuff on Flickr here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30168800@N00/sets/72157632020037096/ Questions? Interest? Email *sameness at gmail dot com*. Thanks! * * * * * *Suntour Cyclone MK II Front Rear Derailleur:* Will win no prizes for Best in Show, but functionally ready to go. Finish is OK, but expect road grease, scratches and dings, with some pitting and light surface rust on the inside of the FD cage. Black screened logo on front is 50%, front is 80%. Front is model FD-2300, has a 28.6 clamp and will shift a triple no problem. Rear is model RD-3700, the long arm GT, which will shift up to 34T. I’d give the jockey wheels a clean and grease. $45.00 *SRAM 8sp 12-26T Cassette:* Model PG-850, 12-13-15-17-19-21-23-26. Low miles, chromed steel good overall, couple of tiny rust spots, teeth are great. $15.00 *Shimano 105 Triple Front Deraileur:* Model FD-5603, braze-on derailleur, no clamp included. Short, mountain-ish cage. Finish is good, with only some slight chain drag wear on the inside cage. 105 sticker is all there. $20.00 *Sugino AT Triple Crankset:* Model TAT. 170mm crank length, 110/74 BCD. Nice, vintage touring and MTB forged triple crankset from the ‘80s. Overall in pretty good condition. Cranks only, no chainrings, bolts, bottom bracket, or anything else included. $45.00 *Brooks Flyer Saddle:* Basically a sprung B-17. Black leather, frame, rails and springs, chrome steel rivets. I like B-17s, so I thought I’d have a crack at one of these for an MTB build which has long since dematerialized. Probably less than 400 miles total, not even broken in, leather still stiff as a board, no sit bone indents, etc. Some light dings and scratches from floating around in a parts box, but I’d call it an easy 85% in the Presentability Dept. Note that the laces are not factory, totally unnecessary, and added strictly as an aesthetic dalliance. I used a leather awl and some delicate equidistant measuring, so pretty pro looking if I do say so myself. Laces are black textile, flat waxed shoelaces. $60.00 *Nitto 10cm Stem:* For 1” threaded forks. I’m gonna say 25.4, but I’m honestly not 100%, and there are no markings either way. It’s ‘80s if that helps. 160cm overall quill length, 95cm extension above max height line. Finish is average. Expect scratches, pitting, etc. Bolts and wedge turn freely, with no rust. Absolutely nothing remarkable about this stem. $15.00 *Shimano 105 Road Double Crankset FD-1050:* 172.5mm crank arms, 130 BCD. Originally Bio-Pace but accepts standard chainrings. Average cosmetic condition, nothing outstanding in any respect, just some good ol’ square taper forged cranks. [RBW] Re: Are Brooks Saddle Worth the Money?
I have a Brooks B17 and a Selle Anatomica. Both are better for me than my somewhat (but not that much) cheaper Specialized gel saddle. SA is slightly more comfortable. My guess is that you could probably find a much cheaper saddle and be comfortable if your bike is properly sized, your bars are high enough and, on longer rides, you wear padded shorts. But Brooks, as over-priced as it is, looks good, feels good, and matches a lugged steel bike much better than a plastic saddle. And, compared to what some pay for pedals, carbon water bottle cages, and higher-end bike shorts, it's a bargain. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. It has been agonizing knowing bike has been in Philly area for past 2 days and not being able to get it, but I'm sure it will be worth the wait. I ordered a AHH in August and 2 weeks ago when Keven and the guys started the build they released wrong frame was sent to them, which turned out to be a good thing, because I was having second thoughts on getting AHH over the Hunqapillar. [RBW] Re: Are Brooks Saddle Worth the Money?
For this sort of thing, you can look at cost out a long way for as quality a product as a Brooks is. I am on a Brooks on my British chariot that is 40x 365 days old. As my buggy is old, my Brooks should last long. As our pals on this list like to jot down, important things stand betwixt your low limbs, so you can (and should) pay a lot for comfort. This product is oft thought of as most important, but as Patrick said, not our chariots' only important part! Wow! That was hard to jot down such a short fiat with no es!! Congratulations to Grant for jotting a long 'un without any! [RBW] Homemade Accessories for Bikes
I like to sew and design bags so have made a few bike accessories. These include waterproof Brooks covers and a bag for my Wald basket. My current project is a set of panniers for my Ram. We're going on a winter break trip to Florida, so I am outfitting her with oilcloth panniers in a tropical print. I'll post photos when I'm done. One of the challenges to all this is finding the quality materials to do the job. There are few retail fabric stores that sell this sort of stuff. We are lucky here in the Pacific Northwest to have retail and mail order sources nearby. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Are Brooks Saddle Worth the Money?
Last year, I attempted two 1200K randonees. In both cases, I bailed shortly after 1000 km due to sleep deprivation and general exhaustion, but thanks to my trusty Brooks B-17, my butt was never sore! If I had to, I'd probably pay $500 for one since no other saddle, leather or otherwise, understands my complex hiney. Ryan in Albuquerque On Nov 23, 2012, at 17:57, Ray Shine r.sh...@sbcglobal.net wrote: I'll add an anecdotal story… A couple of years back, I rode a long distance ride from SF to Ok City with an Aussie and a Brit (no, this is not a bad bar joke). Both of those fellows were riding on expensive plastic gel saddles, me a moderately priced Brooks B17 on my Atlantis. It was a 6 week-ride, and I never suffered any discomfort or other butt malady during the ride. I never rode in padded shorts. My companions, however, spent most of the ride in high discomfort if not all out agony. It was very hot most days, and their sweating butts broke out in all sorts of hot-spots and saddle sores. They each tried a new and softer saddle, even more padding, lotions and salves, etc., and nothing relieved their problems. I tried to explain that it was rather counter-intuitive, but the more firm the saddle and less padded the butt, the more comfortable it would be. I explained that the brooks was really a very taught suspended platform that conformed to my butt and allowed some air flow, but neither bought into my explanation, and each just kept salving up at each stop and complaining. Are you sure this is original printing and not a re-print? What weight paper is this printed on? Is it oxygen bleached? It says issue three, can you confirm that is accurate? With that in mind, I missed the tool pockets typically found at the back of a rando bag. So, I recently decided to create a couple of pouches to hang on the back side of my basket. Both pouches are 2 inches deep, 4 inches wide, and 5 inches high. There is also an extra 3 inches of flap available if I try to over-stuff the pouches. It was relatively easy to construct these little bags because canvas is such a forgiving material to work with. I have plastic stiffeners inside the bags (very similar to the ones in Acorn bags) and velcro attachments to keep everything in place. While these dimensions may seem small, I have all of my tools in the left pouch (inner tube, patch kit, multi tool, a pair of CO2 cartridges, 3 tire levers, zip ties, and 4 Irish straps). The pouch on the right is used to keep my cell phone, garage clicker, and keys; there is quite a bit of space left for snacks, a saddle cover, and a bandana. I'd love to see the folks at Riv create some Sackville versions of these because they're extremely versatile. Have a look--I am attaching JPEG images to this post. Also, I'd love to see any other accessories people make for their bikes. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
