[RBW] Saddlesack Large vs. Nitto Big Back Rack

2012-12-14 Thread soapscum
I'm struggling to get my new large Saddlesack to play nice with my Nitto
Big Back. The problem is that the tombstone on the rack holds the bag so
far back that the loops on the top of the bag can't reach the loops on my
saddle. Not by a LONG way. A new rack is not an option. Has anyone made
this combo work, and if so what the secret sauce?

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Flat pedal revolution manifesto

2012-12-14 Thread Mike
I picked up a pair of VP pedals today. I'm excited to try them out this
weekend. I have a feeling I'll be putting them on my Big Dummy and my
commuter at some point. I like Grip Kings well enough but they can be
downright dangerous when it's wet out as it frequently is here in Portland.
I put some pedal spikes in and that is an improvement but the VPs just seem
the way to go. I like that they're so thin.
>
>
I'll also add that a while back I finally picked up a pair of Sambas which
RBW has mentioned many times as being a great shoe to use with platform
pedals. I live right down the street from Adidas North American HQ and a
couple of times a year, through my employer and because I'm in the
neighborhood, I get these 50% off coupons which I never used until
recently. I finally went by the HQ store expecting it to be filled with
seconds and oddities and was surprised to find black Sambas with the short
tongue. At first they were super squeaky but I treated them with some
Obenauf's and the squeak went away. Anyway, the Sambas are great and seem
like a good match with the VP pedals. More after I put the combo to the
test tomorrow.

If you want a 650b equivalent, I highly recommend the Conti Tour Ride
650b-54 that Riv has at a good price:
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/t54.htm

I have a set on my Bomba and I'm very pleased. They roll well, are
quiet, and very cushy, and they are plenty sturdy. Enough tread for
trail riding too. They don't accelerate very fast at 800g each, but
that isn't what I bought them for. I'd buy another pair but it will
take a long time to wear them out. They say 54 but they measure 50 on
my digital calipers at 45 psi. I'm happier with these than I was with
Big Apple 50's, which always seemed a bit sluggish to me.

[RBW] Re: Another perspective, by George!

2012-12-14 Thread Jan Heine
With all respect to the writer, I think the review focuses on the
wrong things. If Grant had written a book about the history of racing,
then the exact number of Merckx's victories would be important.
However, in the context of "Just Ride," 450 or 525 doesn't make a
difference. It's "a lot."

Unfortunately, it's common for people who for some reason disagree
with something they read to try and find something that is wrong, even
if it's just a typo on page 126. Then they say that the entire
argument is flawed because of these inconsistencies.

Because of this nitpicking, the reader loses sight of what the author
wants to say: Does he agree or disagree with Grant? More importantly,
does he think the book is good/useful and if yes, for whom? If he
finds Grant's humorous attitude about racing grating, he should have
said so...

Of course, the review is worth about as much as you paid for it...

[RBW] Re: Any new Riv roadish bike on the horizon?

2012-12-14 Thread Esteban
You can always get a Riv Custom. Here's my '99 Joe/Joe, with nary a fender
mount on the chainstay bridge. 28mm tires feel the best.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/25671211@N02/8088406652/in/photostream

There're are plenty of new custom bikes, it seems (Kirk, Vanilla, Hampsten)
for light, classic steel road bikes with modern components and medium-reach
brakes running "gravel" friendly 28-32mm tires. It would certainly not
overlap with current production Rivs. If you like Grant's design
philosophy and the ride quality of a Riv and serious fancy lugs and fancy
paint to last a lifetime, why not order a custom?

Not mine and I am not associated. Someone here? It's lovely with good to
excellent components, but the time-built seems wrong. My late 1995 built
All-Rounder has less ornate lugs and a flat top tube. Were the lugs seen
here and the rising top tube being used in 1996 or 97?

Ah, really who cares. What a great looking bike. Needs fenders though.
It is priced its worth I think; not a bargain but not gouging.

[RBW] Re: Any new Riv roadish bike on the horizon?

2012-12-14 Thread Michael Hechmer
If you look at the market it will be for retiring boomers. They will
be buying upgrades on components, tandems, and "comfort bikes" that don't
look as ungainly as most bikes in that category do. Also low maintenance -
IGH, bikes designed for chain guards and integrated fenders, and even
carbon belts. Bikes light enough for senior women to get on a car rack.
Car free trails are spreading rapidly and will spawn a cottage industry of
b&b's that cater to cyclist. So more light touring.

One thing Grant must occasionally think about is that the various models
overlap a lot. Another all-rounder or touring bike would cannibalize from
Hilsen, Atlantis, Hillborne, Hunq, and Bomba sales, since those bikes more than
cover that category. Sure, the new thing could have 26" wheels or different
tubing, but would that really be different enough to make sales that weren't
already gonna happen? Maybe, maybe not.

As long as we're speculating wildly, I'd like to see a true departure from
what already exists. My "vote" is for an ostentatious lugged fat bike. For the
uninitiated, a "fat bike" typically takes 26x4.0" tires on 50-100 mm wide rims,
and the Surly Pugsley is the archetype for the genre. There are getting to be
lots of tires for these, and even silver "foil hat" rims. It's hard to do them
without disc brakes though, which may be a hurdle.

A 26" wheel All Rounder made in Taiwan? Threaded headset, but lighter and
livelier than a LHT? Or perhaps a light-weight randonneur that could
interchange 650b Hetres and 26" wheels (on 50mm rubber), and that runs on
rim brakes? I know, just crazy talk.

 Hello all!

I had my Rivendell frame up for sale this summer but there were no
takers so I have reduced the price a fair bit. It is a 56cm A. Homer
 Hilsen
frame, fork, and Tange Levin alloy njs headset. It is a Toyo frame that
was purchased from Rivendell last fall. I am the only owner. I didn't
like the original color and sent it off to Tom Kellogg for a repaint. The
color is a dark olive green and creamy head tube with a clear coat to
finish up. It's solid color with that slightly wet look and No pearl or
Metallic. I really like it and think he did a fantastic job. I didn't
bother with replacing the decals but if you want them I think you can get
them from Riv. The head badge is, of course, sitting proudly on the head
 tube.

The frame was only ridden from February to May, mostly commuting to
work and a handful of forty or fifty mile rides thrown in for good
 measure.
It has a couple of scratches from normal use and a tiny ding in one spot
which I have tried to show in the pics. I have used frame saver on the
insides and all in all I would consider it to be in great condition.

I am in Manhattan and if anyone is interested and wants to they
are welcome to come by and check it out. If you can get here that is...

Obviously it is still a bit crazy in the city but I think I could have
 the
bike boxed and shipped by the middle of the week.

I am asking $1050 but would like the buyer to pay for shipping. I
will pack it up nice and bring it to Fed Ex or UPS. My bike box is at
 work
right now and there is a giant crumpled crane blocking my path so I can't
figure out the box dimensions till I can get into work and get a quote
 from
one of the shipping companies. Its a riv bike box if anyone knows the
actual dimensions and wants to figure shipping costs.

   Mike

P.S. I don't post very often so when I do it still takes time to go
through and I seem to get lost in the shuffle here and there but I will do
my best to answer any questions.
