pretty much my experience as well. but, one tip to increase the
effectiveness of sealant in tubulars is to add some glitter - it helps
"clotting" and will seal up the puncture better than just the sealant on
its own. also, keep in mind that Stans uses ammonia (as an anticoagulant)
- conventional wisdom says that will degrade latex tubes/tubulars over
time. Caffelatex doesn't use ammonia, so is the better sealant for latex
tubulars. Stans works well with tubulars using butyl inner-tubes.

I ought to be available next week and would do my best to join up! I could
probably recruit a Riv-riders, though I'll probably leave the fixed gear
Quickbeam at home. It needs a break from the commute.

Re: [RBW] Rambouillet upcoming build

2012-12-19 Thread Montclair BobbyB
*I want to try to put one inside an old French headlight housing...*

*
Alex, I did something similar with a B&M Lumotec Lyt on an older (70s)
Gazelle Sport Luxe... It did require a bit of Dremel-tooling and electrical
tape, but I was very pleased with the result, and was able to retrofit a
modern LED dyno light into the original Peerless headlight casing that came
with the Gazelle. In fact I plan to do the same for the men's version of
the same bike (which I am finishing up this winter)...

back to the original topic...in terms of lightish silver 32 hole rims, I
have the H Plus Son TB 14 rims on my Quickbeam and they'd probably suit
your build well. They're light, 32 hole, polished silver, double
eyeletted, box section, 22mm wide and have no branding aside from some
almost imperceptible logos around the valve hole.

Hmmm. Need to test the ankle and make sure it is ready. Maybe it won't rain

Re: [RBW] Rambouillet upcoming build

2012-12-19 Thread Kelly
Tom,

Found at Rivendell, then sent off to paint.

Comparing to the AHH, hmm.. that is hard to explain.. in a good way not
better way just different, it has that twitch like kinda sort but not the
the sever degree as my old race bike ... runs speed well free handed, and
did 45 mph down hill in the dark solid as a rock. But my AHH does that
too.. only the 50x11 allows me to spin up faster and makes the downhills
nicer for pedaling the entire thing. As is it is on this build I'm riding
less 7lbs than the AHH so it feels more like my quickbeam on uphills out of
the saddle .. responsive and light yet steady and stable.
With the Bars slightly below the seat, the seat tilted a bit farther
forward, shorter cranks, 170 instead of 175, and I've been running with
maybe 2 cm more leg bend for faster cadence.

I've got a lugged setback seatpost on the AHH and the standard nitto 2 bolt
on the Ram.. same stems, same bars but the center of saddle to center of
handle bar is the same, with the top tube on the AHH being about 2cm longer
or so as well.

It's going to do exactly what I wanted and that is be my group ride and
fast event ride bike with a go anywhere ability. Fully loaded with bag,
camera, coffee, tools etc it's riding weight is 30lbs. yet feels less.
Just a great feel and very responsive.

So though the AHH / RAM / Quickbeam all have their own feel I can't say I
like any of them better than the other.. The differences are small and
usually where one excels for me it's usually for an insignificant part of a
ride.

So the rear rack is going back on the AHH and a larger rear bag. Maybe
even put a marks rack on the front ...

One thing I miss and am going to stay without is the kickstand... was
walking it through the mall today and trying to find walls to lean it
against was a pain.. note take the AHH to the mall next time. :)

Jim,

Based on the fact that you said you're bringing your best mud bike, I can
only conclude that you've elected to bring the Pugsley on the trip to the
Bay Area? If so, that's an interesting choice to be certain. Or do you
consider one of your other bikes to be better in the mud than the Pug?

Re: [RBW] Rambouillet upcoming build

2012-12-19 Thread robert zeidler
Lighter is righter, so unless you are going to ride all night you can
get away with a battery headlight/tailight.

The reach will be a long one for down-tube so why not STI? Bar ends
can break in a 0 MPH fall over.

Good tire choice but being of similar bodily dimensions you can get
away with some 32 spoke lightweight wheels and maybe have to have them
rebuilt every 3 years or so.

Try one of the Specialized "endurance" saddles in 155mm or even 143mm
versions-very comfy.

All of the weight adds up and your legs may thank you. Make mudguards
a take-off/put-on option, save weight where you can.

[RBW] Re: What's your raffle entry consist of, and what are your plans for the prize?

2012-12-19 Thread sameness
Monstercross! I guess basically a custom Atlantis with e'er so slightly
bigger tire clearance (50+). Degree or two more slope to the top tube, such
that a 8cm Nitto stem makes a perfect 7 when the saddle is just on level
with the middle of the hooks, but still only fistful of post. Horizontal
dropouts and clamp-on downtube cable stops for clean single speeding
conversion. Clear powdercoat but with cream headtube paint. Not sure if I'm
up for having a $300+ order shipped to Australia on the sooner, so at this
point it's all (always, ever) a-boy-can-dream.

Re: [RBW] Re: What's your raffle entry consist of, and what are your plans for the prize?

2012-12-19 Thread Dan McNamara
Decided to play:

2 Schwalbe extralight 700c tubes - might as well try them out
1 Small Topeak frame pump - for Amy's Betty Foy
1 Baggins rare earth magnet - stocking stuffer for a lucky person
2 RBW rare earth magnets - stocking stuffers for 2 lucky people
1 copy of Rework - good reading
1 copy of What Now - gift for confused person
1 Tange/IRD roller drive headset - replacing VO headset on the Bomba
1 small Trangia Cooket - bike camping and earthquake preparedness

total: $307

Not sure on what I would do as a custom. The level TT Hunq and the mountain
mixte are interesting ideas. But maybe something more along the lines of an
AHH-ish frame with room for wider tires would be in the correct direction.

Too many possibilities!

[RBW] FS Green Quickbeam 60cm

2012-12-19 Thread Noah Deuce
After a bit of soul-searching (and moving to a smaller apartment), I've
decided that it's time for my 60cm Quickbeam to find a new home where it
will get ridden more. It's one of the original green ones, purchased in
August 2004. It has...almost no original parts. :-)

-Chris King headset (silver, obviously)
-Phil Wood flip-flop fixed/free rear wheel, hand built, Mavic Open Pro rim,
32h
-Original Suzue(?) front hub, hand built into a wheel with a Mavic CXP-33
rim, 32h
-Nitto Dirt Drop stem
-Nitto Mustache handlebars
-Panaracer T-Serv Messenger tires, 700x35 (incidentally, I can't recommend
these tires enough, in any size, for any bike that isn't a dedicated
mountain bike or gravel racer)
-Original Sugino 110x74 triple crank
-Brass-looking bell

The bike is currently set up as a fixed gear, so it only has a front
brake/brake lever (Shimano BR-550, and Tiagra lever). Gearing is 48x18
(Surly stainless chainring, EAI cog, Phil Wood locking), which may not be
your cup of tea. I have some smaller chainrings (a new 34 and a moderately
used 42), as well as an outer pant guard ring (smooth, no teeth, not sure
what to call it) that will cover up to a 48 (as I recall). So I'd throw
those in for you, if you want them. I'm not including a seat post or seat,
because, well, I need to be able to ride my other bike. :-)
The pedals and the Pitlock skewer you see in the pictures are also not
included. The Pitlock will be replaced with a nice XT quick release.
There's a set of Planet Bike fenders that I'm happy to include as well.

Normal wear and tear for a well-loved bike of its age. The one important
paint issue is the drive-side dropout that got scored by my chain several
years ago. I sent Grant a picture, and he told me it was nothing to worry
about from a frame integrity standpoint, and it's not easy to see at all
unless you get down to stare at the dropout, but I wanted to let you know
about it.

I'm 5'8", 30" inseam, not particularly long in the arms. The bike as set
up now is upright-ish, but not cruiser-bars-sit-up-straight.

Pictures here: http://flic.kr/s/aHsjDg9tJF (sorry they're not artfully
posed - we just had snow here, and it's bloody cold outside).

I'd like to sell for $750 (which doesn't include packing and shipping by
REI, if that should be required).

Let me know any questions, and thanks for looking/reading!

[RBW] Re: Any new Riv roadish bike on the horizon?

2012-12-19 Thread Noah Deuce
I have, and love, an A. Homer Hilsen. I bought it when I was 27, and four
years later it's still the best ride I've ever had. I've commuted on it,
ridden it 200 miles in a day on gravel roads, climbed over Lee Hill Road in
Boulder (just like the USA Pro Cycling Challenge!...Uh, only slower), and
done all the general road riding that I can. It's a great bike - don't
hesitate to buy it when you have the chance.

I would like a custom, but the $$ are so high for them these days.
I think I would want to test ride my next Rivbike purchase as I am gonna
look for something a little quicker than the Bleriot I have.
It handles great and is very stable and I love it, but want to find
something that is easier to pedal for my next ride. 700c, so that would
mean a 55 Hilsen if I had to buy tomorrow.

I like the 650b idea, but too limited in tire choices to get something
"just right" that I am looking for. Also, I live in a non-650b LBS
territory. I live in 700cville.

[RBW] Ride thru snowy winters? How's your Riv-paint hold up?

2012-12-19 Thread Michael
Wanna keep riding thru winter, but don't know if the salted roads would be
suicide for my frame. I do use Longboards.

How have your Riv's held up to the abuse?

[RBW] Ride thru snowy winters? How's your Riv-paint hold up?

2012-12-19 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Your frame and other parts will get some rust, but rust won't kill it.
