So four of us set out to ride a route laid out by Andy starting in Maupin,
OR. What a great route. We started off rolling along the Deschutes River
through dryish canyon lands. A few miles in it began to rain but it stopped
pretty quickly while we messed around in a drainage pipe and checked out
the river. We then began climbing out of the canyon a long a twisting
section of road that was quite pleasant with little traffic and a
reasonable grade. We check out some falls and ruins and then kept rambling
to Tygh Valley. From there we headed towards the Mt Hood National Forest
and miles of dirt/gravel roads the climbed rolled and descended, dropping
us off in Waimic where we refueled. From there we had more rolling roads
and a screaming descent and steep climb out of some canyon. This was an
amazing stretch of road and while the descent was a bit harrowing and the
climb quite steep, it was still my favorite section of road. We then rolled
along on a few more miles of gravel before getting back onto pavement and
dropping back into Maupin which included an absolutely perfect 3 mile
descent on steep twisty roads that were quiet and offered good sight lines.

My only regret about this ride is that we couldn't have pitched camp along
the route. I had never ridden with Tommy or Shawn before and they were
great company. I would absolutely not hesitate to do this ride again as
part of a longer camping trip or even as a day trip. It would certainly be
worth visiting on a clear day.

I'm not sure what the temperature was but I was never too cold or too hot.
The route was about 60 miles. The only sustained rain we experienced was at
the beginning. We had stiff winds across Tygh Valley but also a strong
tailwind when heading east like when we rolled into Waimic and into Maupin
 at the end.

Andy rode his Hilsen with 40mm Schwalbe Marathons. Tommy was on a Bombadil
with Panaracer Col de Vies (or whatever they're called). Shawn and I were
both on LHTs. We both had Schwalbe Marathons (35s for Shawn, 38s for me).
Tommy was the only person to flat. No mechanicals. Andy didn't have fenders
on his bike and that's probably why it rained on us at the beginning of the
 ride.

Big thanks to Andy for planning the route and Tommy for providing
 transportation.

 Pictures proved it happened:

 http://ridewithgps.com/routes/**2159896http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2159896

47 miles and 3700 feet of climbing. Start is in Ventura, Up the River

back into Ojai, then home through a combination of country roads and the
river trail. Meet up in Ventura near Garden St and Santa Clara by 9 and
hit the road around 9:30. This is a no man left behind sort of ride. We
will be taking breaks for re-groups etc. I recommend 3 water bottles as a
minimum for the climb up Sulphur. Tires 32mm wide for the dirt, gearing
for 8-10% grades and brakes in order for the back side of the mountain are
 all suggested as well.

We will stop at one of the many options for lunch in Ojai to grab
something quick to eat and get back on the Road.

This is a no host ride and not associated or sponsored by Ocean Air
Cycles, just a bunch of like minded folks getting together for a fun ride.
Feel free to invite friends and spread the word. The ride is all about
having fun and enjoying the local scenery, pace is moderate, by no means a
hammer fest, but the climbing will likely test your endurance.

I am looking forward to riding with all of you, meeting some new friends
and sharing some of the best riding our region has to offer.

Re: [RBW] Re: Moustache vs. Noodle bar reach overlay with pics

2013-04-08 Thread Ron Mc
Fair enough. Buddy and I rode 32 mi Saturday, half of it through
near-downtown and traffic, and 1700' elevation (beautiful park roads along
the creek drainages, and lunch at a great Thai restaurant). The hood
position is a good back stretch, and a good aero position with elbows bent
and tucked. There is a good tall stretch with palms on the inner bend of
the bars. There are 3 other positions from the brakes to the bar ends that
add control and change back position. I'm sure it's an age thing, but I
had reached the point I couldn't get comfortable on drops, and was
constantly changing. That may have been equally fixed with a tall quill
and rando bar, but I'm delighted with my moustache bar rebuild.
My buddy had quit riding altogether because of cervical strain on drop
bars. He followed my lead, though he has his moustache bars set up
completely different, with a high rake, which really drops the bar ends,
and that's his aero position.

The one thing you miss out on with mustache bars vs. drops is a good
lower position. I find that on drops just having that extra lower position
really helps with comfort on longer rides because I can change my back
position. It helps with the backache.

Now, on drops you can get a real nice reach when you use road brake
levers. It is almost like getting into a time trial position, but not
 quite. Helps the back too.

I like mustache bars quite a bit but am not running them on any bikes
currently. Once I get the Roadeo built up with drops, I was thinking of
putting mustache bars on the Hillborne. I really liked the mustache bar
when I had my Jamis Aurora up and running with them. They did get comments
 though.

moustaches have a shorter reach than noodles both at the hooks and bar
 ends
 by about almost 2cm.

Keep in mind that the mouth of the hand (between thumb and first
finger) will be behind the metal part of the stache bar hook and not on a
 hood, like on drops.

But will it* feel* like a shorter reach in real use (that would be
 good!)?

brother (and struggling to keep up, he on his 60 mm Big Apple Karate Monkey
-- but then I was keeping it mostly in the 70 gear while he was shifting a
lot), and he made a couple of sudden turns as he remembered his way. The
Ram braked and turned without any qualms or crisis. Perhaps it feels a bit
less quick to turn in than my customs, but it has been long enough since
one of those had a freewheel that it's hard to really remember.

At any rate, at least unladen or, as today, with just a small (~5-7 lb)
on one side of the rack, the Ram is definitely one of those superior bikes.
I must try it with a heavy rear load (30-40 lb) to see if it handles rear
 loads better than my custom.

Joe: photo with rack attached; not a good one, I' afraid -- should have
 removed the pannier.

This particular iteration of the Fly, unlike the others I've owned, has a

[RBW] Re: Help choosing a bike

2013-04-08 Thread Minh
Not sure i can size based on that info, i think as a MTB it would be fine, but
keep in mind that CO/Gap is just a bike-path. There's very little climbing
(almost none) and the roughest section is on the CO where it's just rutted out
from rain. Therefore a more upright riding position is more beneficial that a
hunched over one, so if you get a MTB, save some time to work on the seating
position on the frame and focus on comfort over manuevarability. Remember you
are talking about a lot of miles in a day, of course if he's young he may be
able to tough it out.

Otherwise i think a Rockhopper if it fits will work out fine, plenty of tire
volume. Might be short of carrying capacity, but if you have 3-4 bikes you can
spread out the luggage if neccessarry.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rambouillet, finally built!

2013-04-08 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I was very tired yesterday, so only chased my brother to the store and
back, some 6-7 miles rt. But this ride did include a fastish, ~1 mile
downhill with turns, and it did include some last minute brake-'n'-turns as
my brother remembered a turn at the last minute.

The quality that jumped out from this little ride was neutrality, not in
the sense of bland, but in the sense that the bike disappears -- causes no
problems. It seems very, very stable without hesitating or over-reacting to
steering input -- the sort of handling that allows you to sit up and ride
one-handed as you look over your shoulder while rolling fast downhill.

I would guess that the 35 mm tires help bring out this particular sweetness
in the frame -- would you other owners of Rams describe the handling in the
same way, and (2) does this depend on tires of a certain width? What would
the Ram handle like with 28s? -- I have no desire to install 28s, but I'm
curious to learn if 35s are the ideal match.

Must add hooks for the bungees of my grocery panniers and try the bike with
a 30-40 lb rear load.

More as the miles come.

All: thanks for the compliments. Very tired today, so just another very

stabillity -- stability as opposed to sluggishness. I was following my
brother (and struggling to keep up, he on his 60 mm Big Apple Karate Monkey

This particular iteration of the Fly, unlike the others I've owned, has
a neat attachment that lets you use seatstay rack braze ons: these can be
bolted to the single strut, that otherwise bolts to the rear brake mounting

Patrick:

My Ram has always seemed to ride like it's on rails. Very neutral and
stable. That works on 28mm through 37mm tires. Mine came stock with 32mm
Paselas but I change tires around just for fun periodically. The bike is
not intended for heavish loads front or rear. I seem to recall reading that
15 - 20 lbs rear was ideal. It has not fork eyelets because it was not
designed to take a rack, but you can put a rack on with P-clamps (i.e.
Mark's Rack). I had one on for a while with a L'il Loafer and it seemed
to be okay with maybe 5 lb in it. I did not like it with any more than that.

I've added a Fly rack and a small seat wedge for basic kit, but otherwise, as
you see it. The wheels are loaners, hope to get my own shortly.

Pro 5 Vis 44/30 pulling 14-15-16-17-18-20-23 7 speed cassette by 7400 series
derailleurs, with old Dura Ace SPD pedals and 7 speed Dura Ace dt shifters --
indexed! First indexed drivetrain I've owned since, what, 1993. Kevlar bead 35
mm Kojaks are light and roll quite well despite the armored tread -- would love
to get some very nice Compass Bike tires.

9 cm Nitto stem with 42 cm Noodles: I've got the bar a bit higher than on the
other Rivs, but also 1 cm further out -- serendipity, but the original setup
seems to be a keeper.

Shimano levers pulling (for now): front: Nashbar, rear: Shimano A550. Nitto
Jaguar post (thanks again, Tom!), original issue Flite, used but good tape, Fly
rack. That's all you need!

I think this will take over grocery runs from the Fargo, which will go back to
off road duty.

Thanks to Tim Whalen, sometime of this list, for a good price and very easy

wind and thick fog. I took my sweet time coming down walking some sections,
 apparently your braking is compromised when you only have your rear brake;
who would of thought? We extended the ride once we got back on the road by
taking BBQ Terrace to get some river crossing in. We finished the ride with
wet feet and huge smiles We even washed our bikes at the last park with the
hose there. Great to meet so many new friends. Looking forward to riding
more with such a great group.

What is all of that green stuff covering the ground?

[Wonderful photos. They remind me of the old 20th Century Fox Motion
Picture Ranch in the hills just north of Malibu where I worked as a night
patrolman back in the mid '70s, home to film sets for M*A*S*H, Tora! Tora!
Tora! and Swiss Fambly Robinson. Live oaks, brush covered hills, dirt roads
... My job was to drive patrols over ~8 miles of dirt road and doubletrack
to (1) keep out vandals who might climb over the fence and (2) chase the
resident cows away from the Swiss Fambly Robinson set's potted exotic
fauna. I slept many a night in Hawkeye's tent. We were told not to exceed
12 mph, at which a complete patrol would take 45 minutes. I came close to
hitting 15 minutes, hitting 70+ on some of the wider straights at 2 am --
we'd destroy the cars after a few weeks of this treatment -- old junkers
from the 20th Century lot. Great fun. Beside getting paid, I aced our
science and math tutorials with all the dead time in which to study --
Thomas Aquinas College was just across the street (= Malibu Canyon Road) at
the time. The ranch supervisor had a very nice house and I remember
thinking them very decadent -- after all I was attending a conservative
Catholic Great Books college across the way -- as the son, just a couple of
years older than I, would bring in his nocturnal girlfriends for a night of
ranch touring in his El Camino combined with pot smoking and, no doubt,
fornincation. And the super's house has naked lady posters on the wall of
the billiard room!

Great fun.

Brief update, I now have JB greens on my LongLow, they fit fine and leave
just... enough... room for wooden fenders (yet to be mounted). The greens
are definitely faster rolling than the blues, in my limited comparison
testing. Yesterday, I found myself coasting on nearly-flat downhills
without losing speed, where I would be pushing to maintain the same pace on
the blues. Back on the blues this morning, they feel slower, as if some
miscreant had let some air out.

I understand the differences in construction, and will stick with the blues
for the city commute, but favor the greens for long days.

isn't remotely in the budget, so I've been looking around for Bridgestones,
Miyatas, etc. that will fit a short person. There's a nice looking RB-T for
sale on CL at $350, but it's one Bridgestone I have no experience with. By
the look of it, I'm guessing it could clear Jack Browns and fenders but I
don't really know. Any thoughts, experience, or even speculation will be
greatly appreciated as always.

Re: [RBW] Re: April 7 SoCal Rive Ride in Ventura

2013-04-08 Thread rperks
A huge thank you to everybody who came out. Organizing rides like this
helps to motivate me for these rides that are right out our back door here
in Ventura. I am pretty sure everybody had a great time, some new
thresholds were set and everybody had a smile by the time they were done,
no mechanicals or even flats that I know of. Pretty much a perfect day,
even the weather worked out. That wind advisory that never panned out,
thank God, is here today with sustained 20mph out of the west and gusts way
beyond that, shaking the windows while I type.

I threw up some flick pics here:

We need to do this more often!

 the
loop a bit from years past, and you can see this year's route here:

 http://ridewithgps.com/routes/**2159896http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2159896

47 miles and 3700 feet of climbing. Start is in Ventura, Up the River
Trail to sulphur Mtn where it is a 10 mile dirt climb, with a great drop
back into Ojai, then home through a combination of country roads and the
river trail.

I am looking forward to riding with all of you, meeting some new
friends and sharing some of the best riding our region has to offer.

[RBW] A Rambouillet, Paul Racer Ms, Longboards, and Grand Bois Cypres

2013-04-08 Thread stevew
I mounted a pair of Grand Bois Cypres - 700x30 (they are supposed to
actually measure 32mm, but I don't have a good way to check) - tires on my
Rambouillet this weekend and went out for a ride.

I had been debating the purchase for a little while because I was concerned
about clearance under my Longboards. For a trip on the CO Towpath, I
mounted a pair of Schwalbe Marathon 32s, and they just made it, although a
little tight for my taste. However, they were just fine over the rough-ish
surface of the towpath. At this point, I was using Silver sidepulls.

Recently, I switched to Paul Racer Ms, and decided to take the Grand Bois
plunge. Elton@Harris felt that the tires would fit under the fenders, and
he was indeed correct. Either the Cypres are a little smaller than the
Marathons, or the Racer Ms allow the fender to raise a little higher than
the Silvers. Could be both. In any case, the tires fit fine.

I was also wondering if the purchase of the Grand Bois tires would be
worth it. I had been running Paselas, and they were fine. My Ram with
Dura-Ace 7700 hubs rides like glass. But, add in the Cypres, and it rides
like glass coated in butter. Man, is that one smooth bike now.

One thing that I was not expecting was the improved cornering. Now, I'm
not Jobst Brandt or anything when it comes to turning...

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_urSQl6wUA5g/S53M3cq118I/H48/iMcTHor25qM/s1600/tiretest.jpg

...nor did the Ram corner poorly before, but with the new tires, it was
just so smoth. I could lean the bike over and it never wavered from
what seemed like a perfect arc. I wonder if this has to do with the
roundness of the tire? It seems like the wheel is just rolling over a
large glass marble or something. The bike also seemed easier to control
and even more stable at very slow speeds. Once again, these are
improvements over already excellent handling characteristics.

Anyway, I'm just putting this out there as one opinion on the size of a
32mm tire under fenders on a Rambouillet (it fits!), and how Grand Bois
Cypres tires ride (they're awesome!).

[RBW] Quickbeam cranks

2013-04-08 Thread Esteban
All parts have finally, slowly been accumulated, so, this unbuilt orange
60cm (c-t) Quickbeam in my closet may soon be roadworthy. Question for the
group

I have two cranksets ready to go: 1) 40t TA Pro 5 Vis Cyclotouriste in
perfect vintage condition and 2) 40t Sugino RD2, which is a bit scratched up

Any hints on set up for the TA, regarding BB length or any other fit
problems?

I was going to run 40t in the front, 15t fixed and either a 16t free or go
big and run 16/19 White Industries DOS. In general, I'd run about 72 gear
inches fixed and 68 gear inches free (with a bail-out if I went with the
DOS). Initial build will be with Jitensha bars for city riding.

Any thoughts?

Center pull design does offer a little more headroom under the brake
arch than dual pivot sidepulls.

[RBW] Re: Moustache vs. Noodle bar reach overlay with pics

2013-04-08 Thread Michael

Ha! I love the chicken shot. Very cool.
Thanks for the write up and info and pics. Always good to get the right
 position dialed in.

I am trying that with my Noodle Sam now, but getting left arm tingles and
shoulder pain AFTER riding. I suspect it is the longer reach than I am used
to. The 52 Sam is a longer reach frame (50cm with 8cm stem with bars/saddle
level) than my Bleriot (45.5). Not sure what to do. When I ride, it feels
fine, but later, I got soreness in shoulder and arm, tingles in hand. Right
now I have the bars at max height to shorten the reach. I am at 48cm now
with the bars all the way up. If that doesn't do it, before getting a
shorter stem, I may go to 'staches since I have always wanted to try them
and, as the overlay shows, they are shorter reach by a couple cm's which
should put me in the zone my body remembers.

If that doesn't work - Albatross bars, which givs a reach variety as long
or as short as you could dream of.
If that doesn't work, time to cry and go to the doctor and see what is
wrong with me, if anything.

the best application for your new Ram ? I thought that 20lbs was about the
maximum. The SamH , which you did not enjoy as much seemed like a better
Riv for errand running .

I know you use your bikes a lot for transport and errand running, but I
would hate to see one of those lovely Rivendells vandalized or stolen,
which is one of the reasons , I suspect, you have the Fargo and you've had
other bikes too as utility bikes.

I've added a Fly rack and a small seat wedge for basic kit, but otherwise,
as you see it. The wheels are loaners, hope to get my own shortly.

 Pro 5 Vis 44/30 pulling 14-15-16-17-18-20-23 7 speed cassette by 7400
series derailleurs, with old Dura Ace SPD pedals and 7 speed Dura Ace dt
shifters -- indexed! First indexed drivetrain I've owned since, what, 1993.
Kevlar bead 35 mm Kojaks are light and roll quite well despite the armored
tread -- would love to get some very nice Compass Bike tires.

9 cm Nitto stem with 42 cm Noodles: I've got the bar a bit higher than on
the other Rivs, but also 1 cm further out -- serendipity, but the original
setup seems to be a keeper.

Shimano levers pulling (for now): front: Nashbar, rear: Shimano A550.
Nitto Jaguar post (thanks again, Tom!), original issue Flite, used but good
tape, Fly rack. That's all you need!

I think this will take over grocery runs from the Fargo, which will go
 back to off road duty.

Thanks to Tim Whalen, sometime of this list, for a good price and very
 easy terms!

The quality that jumped out from this little ride was neutrality, not in

steering input -- the sort of handling that allows you to sit up and ride

I would guess that the 35 mm tires help bring out this particular

handling in the same way, and (2) does this depend on tires of a certain
width? What would the Ram handle like with 28s? -- I have no desire to

At any rate, at least unladen or, as today, with just a small (~5-7 lb)

And the super's house has naked lady posters on the wall of

rear brake; who would of thought? We extended the ride once we got back on
the road by taking BBQ Terrace to get some river crossing in. We finished
the ride with wet feet and huge smiles We even washed our bikes at the last

Manny is coming to town (Portland, OR) this week and wants to go for a ride

that he has to be back to his hotel by 1pm.

I'm up for whatever. I'm willing to put something together if need be.

List member Norm and I were talking about possibly heading out for an
overnighter after the ride. That will be somewhat weather dependent.

The 1994 RBT is a solid bike with decent resale value. I've never been

nice. There was toe clip overlap in basically every size, especially the
small ones, if you run a fender. Some people have a bigger problem than
others over that.

cogs for a few years, with a 42 or 44 ring. An ideal setup would be 38/44
rings and the 17/21 dingle cog...

Jim, I remember reading about your Atlantis years ago on your blog (if I'm

first place - so thanks for that.

It's been a great bike - it's kind of the generalist of the bike world,
no? Can do almost anything at least competently. It always seemed,
though, like where it would really excel would be in distance cycling -
Brevets and whatnot - packing stuff to go with you..and that was just never

cycling I always enjoy the most is when I'm off road somewhere and I feel
like I'm part of nature. It makes me feel like a kid again. And the
Atlantis can do some of that, it's just not it's forte in my opinion.
Anyway, I think the Ogre will work out fine. Haven't sold the Atlantis
yet. It turns out my CL ad wasn't hitting the Boulder index so had to
repost on Sunday. I've had a few hits but nothing serious yet.

Minnesota as soon as new mandatory bike lights law enacted; no functioning
lights on your bike during dark hours, you will be fined $190! That to the
raise of light thefts. Therefore, I had my lights affixed to my helmet and
my messenger bag instead.

It's just a cheap IQ Fly.

Is light theft like this common? It was on a busy street in daylight. An
 Acorn bag was left alone.

Gosh, that stinks, this is a fear of mine as i have an edelux and a supernova

security bolts instead of normal allen ones, stick wax or glue in the bolt
heads to make it harder to undo). But nothing is 100% fool-proof if someone
really wants it.

But in the end, we can't live in fear and our bikes are made to be
used/enjoyed, so don't let this dissuade you from replacing it and riding on!

My RB-T was one of my favorite bikes. I sold it only to finance a
Rivendell. Very fun bike to ride as it has skinny tubes and fits fat tires.
Best combo around! If it fits here it sounds like a great price. Watch the
reach, as though standover may be okay, she may be pretty stretched out and
that isn't comfortable over time.

I think there are several options I know of: Pallisades/SM Mtns are always
a crowd-pleaser! I like the San Clemente loop as well, but don't know how
anyone else feels about it. Santiago to 4 Corners is a blast.

Loch Leven is a really nice ride, but I can't figure out a good way to do

highway. Doable as the rewards are there, but not as awesome as I would
like :-) Perhaps that could be turned into a bit of a MTB adventure
featuring the SART. I ride that on my Rivendell, but it is definitely
mountain-bikey with some exposed rocky falls over the side for the
unwary.http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/4940165060/in/set-72157624713581625Not

If you'd like to join us, shoot me, Keven, an email

 to let me know.

We're limiting the group size to 12 folks. Myself and at least one other
 Riv employee will join us.

You're on your own with food, bikes, gear, etc. but can arrange to borrow
a demo bike and even demo camping gear if arranged ahead of time. It's a
great opportunity to try out something new!

The charge is $50 to cover our camp site, some low-carb snack food, and
gets you a $25 Rivendell credit to be used within 30 days.

 Hope you can join us!

Re: [RBW] Rear rack advice/suggestions

2013-04-08 Thread René Sterental
This is the most awesomest rear rack ever!!! I have 3, although only 2 are
mounted.

If, however, you're looking for something less expensive, I have a brand
new, never mounted Tubus Cargo in silver. The difference is that it's
painted and has a plastic or something like that coating, as opposed to the
cromoly metal finish of the Nitto. I purchased several years ago thinking
that it would be just like the Tubus Nova in silver, which is stainless
steel, but didn't like it for my Riv bikes and thus never used it. I
discovered it while doing clean-up work in my garage, and will be
offering it for sale.

You cannot go wrong with the Nitto. Remember there are two sizes, IMO, the
smaller size is the nicest since it brings the top closer to be under the
rear of the saddle. The smaller is intended for 26 650b bikes, but if
you have the braze-ons higher on the seat stays like my Hunqapillar does,
it will fit. Otherwise, you need the larger one that is intended for 700c
bikes.

Re: [RBW] Re: OT: your opinion of the Bridgestone RB-T?

2013-04-08 Thread rperks
the only real difference between the two smallest RBT sizes is the location
of the actual top tube. It is pretty subtle, but if you measure up 52/53
on the seat tube on a 50 and then horizontal to the stem they are pretty
much the same bike. IMO they are one of the better riding bikes where a
700c was crammed into a little bike. As mentioned the toe clip overlap is
horrible, but f you can get passed that, they are great riders. I have one
that I work on for a friend that is in the cue for a swap to albatross
bars, the longish top tube makes them a decent candidate.

Bruce Gordon (he makes them to order, so I reckon you can get whatever
color you want) or Tubus.

I bought the big Nitto and wound up selling after only briefly installing
it on my new tourer. Heavy and overbuilt compared to Gordon and Tubus
entries. The finish as with all Nitto products sure looks nice.

Thanks to Tim Whalen, sometime of this list, for a good price and very
 easy terms!

Re: [RBW] Re: FS 64 cm Atlantis - custom blue

2013-04-08 Thread Tonester
That seems like a really fair price to me, you're just in rarified air -
we're an odd lot! You might consider a cross-post to the SF bay area
craigslist (if such a thing is allowed).

Jim, I remember reading about your Atlantis years ago on your blog (if I'm
remembering correctly) and it was an inspiration to me to buy it in the
first place - so thanks for that.

It's been a great bike - it's kind of the generalist of the bike world,
no? Can do almost anything at least competently. It always seemed,
though, like where it would really excel would be in distance cycling -
Brevets and whatnot - packing stuff to go with you..and that was just never
me. I just had more fun when I could take it off road a bit. The part of
cycling I always enjoy the most is when I'm off road somewhere and I feel
like I'm part of nature.

In the group's experience is this price going to work or will I need to
 drop it?

I owned an Atlantis for several years, and I own an Ogre now. I will be a
bit of a contrarian by agreeing with your decision to swap the Atlantis for
the Ogre. Aside from traditional geometry and lugs and the Rivendell
mystique, the Ogre has all the good stuff the Atlantis has, and then some.
Loads of tire clearance, more brake options, Rohloff option, numerous rack
options, trailer hitch option, easily single-speeded, tough, not as much
regret (or as hard to replace) if it gets damaged, etc.

That makes sense, Drew. The consideration that with the Atlantis you can
then easily switch back to an all-rounder at little to no cost down the
road is worth including in the calculation. Yes, it costs a few hundred now
(less if you can buy used components via a WTB post here), but the long
term costs of the switch may be harder to see, especially for your wife.
WIll you want to do a tour in the years to come? Some road/dirt rides?
Living in Boulder, there are some amazing rides to Estes Park that offer
great camping etc that an all-round Atlantis is built for. Whatever you
 decide, have a blast!

Believe me that I never envisioned selling it when I bought it. It did
occur to me that I could retrofit the Atlantis to do more tough stuff
riding. I started putting a list of all of the parts to really do it
 right
and it was going to be a few hundred dollars - and I started pitching it
 to
my wife and she couldn't get past the idea that I just had the wrong tool
for the job. If I wanted to be riding on trails then I should stop trying
to make the Atlantis fit if another bike might do better. Plus, a few
hundred dollars that we really don't have versus a revenue-neutral switch
 to a mountain bike (hopefully).

Anyway, it's an emotional decision having to part with this bike, but
if you take the emotion out of it I think (hope) that it's the wise move.
  I guess we'll see.

 Hi Drew!

That is a sweet looking Atlantis! I'm going to second Tony's
recommendation to try a set of fat knobby-type tires before parting with
that bike. I've extensively used my Atlantis with Schwalbe Marathon XRs
(700x40) on the trails and primitive roads on the Navajo Rez in the four
corners area of Arizona and the riding is very similar to the trails in
 the
Front Range area. The Atlantis is a great off-road bike with the right
tires. Oh, and with the 700x40 XRs, there still miles of space, so easy
 enough to go much fatter.

 Good Luck!

 Hey there!

I'm a fellow custom color Atlantis owner (red!) and totally get
your dilemma - fortunately I'm able to maintain a stable of bikes so the
temptation to sell the Atlantis doesn't come up. I fed my jones for a
29'er disc brake bike with a Civilian Luddite and love it, but not to
 the
extent of choosing it over the Riv. Have you tried super-fat semi-knobs
 on
the Atlantis? Looks like the Ogre will handle up to a 2.5 tire , and
 I've
seen Atlantii with 50mm slicks which is nearly 2. I'd whip a set of
knobbies on the Atlantis and give it a go before giving it up. I think
that yellow all-rounder that hit the list recently is one of the coolest
 bikes I've ever seen.

Best of luck in any event!

I've got a single Riv silver if you're interested, though it's missing
brake pads?

An alternative to a 600 would be a Shimano A550 dual pivot, preferably

Perhaps I measured those Nashbars wrong and they are a couple of mm short?

See attached. Though I'd prefer a match, I just need something that looks
 much the same.

That's a great design. Maybe I will buy a front or rear wire rack now.

Thanks. I'm looking for a single TT 60cm in orange. Has anyone seen one
hanging in a shop somewhere?
