[RBW] Re: Yet another post on shimmy

2013-04-21 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Well, there are definitely a few variables in that equation...

Let's work backward a bit -

Shimmy should show up at specific speeds. Or under specific speeds and
weight distributions. There are a number of things which tend to amplify
this, and there have been long threads here and on the iBob list about the
general topic of shimmy. Anyone new to the general topic can get some info
here - http://sheldonbrown.com/brandt/shimmy.html

Jan H also has a good video of the condition here -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=8pzc2aYVFEg

>From your post, you say you never got shimmy before, but then also say it
"almost never happened" with the original setup - so, it sounds like you
did get shimmy before, and now it happens much more frequently. Is that
the case?

I'd actually just swap back your old front wheel to start with, and see
what that does. There could be some hesitation in that hub which is
exacerbating things.

I'd also remove the saddlebag and see what that does. One variable at a
time!

I don't know if going from 35 Panaracers to 33.3 JB's would do it, but I'd
consider the possibility of tire pressure being a variable as well. I'd
also try to get a fix on the speed at which it occurs.

best of luck in tracking down the issues.

[RBW] Yet another post on shimmy

2013-04-21 Thread john
Hello All.

I thought I'd get some ideas on a recent shimmy development. Here is the
scenario:

Rider specs:
John
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 150 soaking wet
PBH: 88.9
SH: apprx 78.5 cm

I ride a 60 cm. Sam HIll.

I Never experienced shimmy with the stock build: Shimano deore front and
rear hubs, Velocity synergy wheels, (35 cm panaracer pasella tires), noodle
handlebars, SKS Longboard fenders, etc.
I ride with a nitto mini front rack, nitro rear rack (the one for
saddlebag support, not panniers). I ride with a Baggins "Adam" saddlebag.
No front bag as yet because I haven't found one to fit the distance between
the front rack and handlebars (I'm not particularly interested in buying a
nitro F-15 rack, but instead covet a Berthoud rando bag - yet I don't know
if the 28cm size will fill the gap. )

Nothing unusual for a Rivendell.

Now, for the recent developments:
Swapped the old wheel (Velocity Synergy) for a newly built Velocity Synergy
with dynohub (Shimano Alfine). Have a lightweight B&M Cyo light attatched
to the right (rider's right while riding) of the rack. Switched from 35cm
Panaracers to 33.3 Jack Brown Greens. Got the JBs to fit under Hono
because I had issues with the Longboards on two different sets: (rubbing,
chattering, due to inherent fleibility) . I also shortened the stem just a
hair, to see if doing so would help alleviate some forearm discomfort I'd
been having. (The old setup was stem height equidistant to saddle height.)
Now the stem height is slightly below saddle height. That's it.

Now: experiencing some shimmy (and less overall feeling of stability) while
riding no hands sitting upright. This does not occur all the time, but it's
noticeable. The "response" doesn't happen all the time, but still, it's
there, and unnerving when it does.

This "response" almost never happened with my old, original setup.
Frustrating! Because I much prefer dyno lighting for any number of reasons,
and wanted to run narrower tires to better fit underneath Honjo fenders,
which I much prefer to Longboards. My "upgrades" were plenty expensive,
too! And a pain in the neck, and time away from the bike. Still, I want
what I want: the best Riv ride possible. Is there an inherent compromise
here? Am I missing something? And if it is the new developments, where is
the problem? Stem height? Wheel weight? Tire width?

Any comments? Clues? Suggestions? I'll continue to ride and see how it
goes, but honestly, as much as I like the changes I've made (except for the
need to run thinner tires with is not optimal for me), I'd go back to the
original set up if it meant the end to shimmy. I do not like to shimmy!

Yes, obviously I will start with the easy stuff first. As in, I'll raise
the stem and see what happens (or doesn't). After that, I'm frustrated.
Very frustrated.

Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

John

I've also had less than stellar experiences with Tubus customer service.
My Cosmo rear rack has plugs in the ends of the tubes and caps over the

They always tell me they are out of stock.

2013-04-21 Thread dougP
Don't put too much faith in warranties. A "limited warranty" is written to
protect the issuer (company, dealer, etc) by limiting liability to certain
specific situations or issues. It is NOT intended to protect the customer
or consumer of the product, but rather to limit the extent of claims.
"Lifetime warranty" usually covers the reasonable expected lifetime of the
product for its intended purpose, not the lifetime of the customer. A 30
year warranty on anything, except maybe a rock, ain't gonna happen.

Re: [RBW] Re: Tubus racks for Summer tour with a few thoughts & pictures.

2013-04-21 Thread Kelly
With fully loaded touring the weight difference is insignificant. The wider
Nitto has advantages when mounting bags or strapping other supplies on the rear
rack between panniers. Nitto is also easier to mount Arkel at least panniers
on.
The Tubus protects the rear light better, allows for lower mounting of the
panniers. I was unable to notice a difference in ride quality.

Currently my wife has Tubus front and rear and I am running Nitto rear, Tubus
low rider front and both of us have Nitto mini fronts.

Both are great racks and have delivered many weeks of on the road service
without issue.

I trust them both

I think it has 650B wheels, so presumed Bleriot although Hilsens come with
those also (didn't think about that). I will gladly defer to the majority
view :-)

CycLAvia was great! 79F when we started, 81F at the end. Met up with Jim W
for a bit at the secret coffee spot in Venice. Other than J's Atlantis, no
other Rivs, but lots of Brooks saddles in use. Some credit for that has to
go to Grant! Gazillions of people out and about today, good times on
bikes!!!

And saw The
Dude.

Some pix to entertain and enlighten:

I just started using the Large Arkel handlebar bag.I love it. Great

It's large enough for my DSLR and a moderate zoom lens. Stable and easy

I have the Brand V bar bag. On Noodles. But it is beautifully made, easily
accessible while riding and holds a lot of stuff. Camera (older Canon
point&shoot so slightly bulky), snacks, cellphone, rolled up light jacket,
tube. It has a double ended zipper, that's easy to grasp. The two brass rings
on each end can be used for extra stability if one wants (not needed but
personal preference). If on tour, I attach a short velcro strap to each brass
ring and then stretch that to my brake lever/handlebar. I'm impressed with
this bag, and 3 friends have purchased their own in the few months after seeing
mine.

This might be the best current picture of it though not great, if you look
closely at the brake lever, you can barely see the small velcro strap, it sits
flat and I never know it's there:

Another data point. I did a long tour with Tubus Cosmo/Nova racks and
Ortlieb panniers(Bikepacker Plus/Sportpacker Plus), and I had no problems.
After I got home, I was riding my bike with the racks still on it, and I
took a shortcut up on the sidewalk, As I was rounding a sharp corner I
reached down to ring my new bell to warn any pedestrians, and I ended up
riding off the curb (into oncoming traffic). I leaned my bike heavily
trying to avoid going off the curb, and as such when I went off the curb, I
fell over onto the curb. Luckily, the racks and my body saved the bike
from any damage. The rear Cosmo rack was slightly bent, but not broken or
cracked.

For me, aesthetically speaking, this photo is close to Rivendell perfection.
The matching color headtube is a part of that too, adds to the subtlety of the

subtlety in its Tolkein reference. Meanwhile the handlebar setup, while not
extreme, reminds you, "easy for you to go low with bar height, moderate with
the bar height, or high if you were to want to, even adjustable during the
ride, simple, with Nitto beauty along for the ride. All points made here are
subjective, no preaching intended, especially about the no-cream headtube. : )

Great photo, great-looking ride. I'm itching for summer up there now! OK enough

my touring bikes have 126 spacing. Nitto width may make more sense on a 135 or

Re: [RBW] Re: Tubus racks for Summer tour with a few thoughts & pictures.

2013-04-21 Thread Matthew J
I am not an engineer (nor am I all that good at searching discussion
forums) but the guy who posts in the Velocipedesalon as blasdelf and makes
custom racks under the Haulin Colin
name: http://www.haulincolin.com/porteur.html wrote a very good discourse
on why Tubus makes the best production touring racks.

His point, and a point I have read elsewhere and that comports with my own
experience is the cohesive design of the rack. Unlike the big Nitto racks
which use struts to support the joined pieces, every angle and weld on the
Tubus are planned for its overall purpose which is to attach firmly to the
bike and allow panniers to attach firmly to the rack. The Nitto racks are
also quite wide compared to the Tubus.

Nitto are good racks. They are certainly very attractive. From a touring
(and by that I mean long distance frequent rough road touring not a four
day weekend jaunt in the Lake District) perspective, however, looks do not
make as much difference as weight and simplicity. The Tubus is lighter and
a less complicated design.

Slightly off topic, I see someone mentions the Velo Orange above. True,
stainless steel keeps its good looks longer than powder coated chro-molly.
But stainless steel is not as strong and weighs more. The Velo Orange
rear racks do not accommodate large panniers well. It is also difficult to
hook Arkel style pannier mounts on the VO racks.

Thank you, Nick, Mannie, and Rob. Yes, Rob, sway is a big issue for my
noggin, as it introduces a lot of interference to clear proprioception
through the handlebars. The good news is I don't need to reach anything
while riding because two hands on the bar are what I need anyway. What I
can't figure out is why more handlebar bags don't just anchor around the
stem like a saddlebag anchors around the seatpost. No sway.

[RBW] Re: Handlebar Bag Recommendations?

2013-04-21 Thread rperks
Patrick,
It is a serious challenge to get a bag with easy access, little sway, and
hang it from the Alba bars. The forward reaching sections which are part
of what make the bare great IMO really squash the dream here. That is why
most of bikes you see with them end up with a small rack and or basket if
you want your stuff up front. The little acorn or older candybar style
bags are you best bets, but they are not easy to get into while on the bike
like a true rando or hobo style bag.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/8587814544/

you can alleviate this problem somewhat by moving to a bar like the wald
867 or bosco, the flat front opens up some options. That said controlling
sway is still going to be an issue.

Based on what you have talked about having other challenges with, sensory
overload and such, I would think sway is going to be your biggest hurdle.
A small rack and basket may solve a bunch of problems, even if it is a
plestcher and wald with zip ties. Starting from there you can use
something as simple as a grocery bag or soft cooler from the thrift store
as a bag

Re: [RBW] Re: Tubus racks for Summer tour with a few thoughts & pictures.

2013-04-21 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Axioms are cheap, in part, because of country of origin, yes, but also because
they're made and imported by the zillions. I get the impression that Nitto
makes racks in batches of tens, or a couple hundred, at most. And then you're
paying tons extra for a lopsided currency exchange that has nothing to do with
the quality of the workmanship. Tubus may not be much higher volume than Nitto.

I broke a (non-structural) weld on a Tubus rack, too, also by bending it in a
way that it wasn't meant to bend. Even with the snapped weld, I used that rack
HARD for several years and it worked great, never gave me any problems. I
eventually sold it on whatever bike it was on, but I've continued to use Tubus
products, and have always been happy with that brand's smart, efficient designs
and quality.

As far as Tubus customer service, or any customer service...I never put my
faith in an email's ability to communicate my point (or get through spam
filters). I have a hunch that a phone call to Ortlieb/Tubus USA would have the
desired result. I talk to those people all the time. They're really helpful.
