[RBW] Re: Just Ride (g-dammit!).
Well said, Patrick. That is precisely why I decided that tempting as it is to want to play with, a fixie would never be anything but a novelty toy here in the mountains. I must say though, playing with the idea of a fixed gear taught me each gear has a much wider range (on the low end in particular) than I'd previously utilized and I subsequently shift much less. ALways good to play! Grin. With abandon, Patrick On Thursday, May 16, 2013 7:52:40 PM UTC-6, Patrick Moore wrote: The general theme of Just Ride being riding without complication, daunting goals, and excessive complication, I have found a niche way to implement that principle: riding with multiple gears. I was tired this morning and debated briefly whether to take the car to Stevie's, but decided to ride since I have the Ram which has a 35 low gear -- 30/23), and because the outbound trip has a net elevation loss of several hundred feet. I was tired all day and, this evening at 6 pm, found myself faced with a ride just shy of 8 miles with the temp closing on 90, a brisk breeze quartering against me, and the elevation to be regained that I had coasted down this morning. But, no sweat! Multiple gears! Wonderful things! I got on the Ram and headed south for 1.5 mile against the wind, no sweat, keeping it in the 70. Turned westward onto Coronado and the gradual climb toward the Mesa -- again, no sweat, dropped to the 66 and twiddled away. Crossed Loma Larga where the grade turns gradually upward -- no sweat; I've got 60 and 50 in the big ring. After 1/2 mile, Coronado meets the Mesa and turns viciously steep. No sweat! Dropped seriatim to the 60 and, bypassing the 44/23 = 50, chickened out to the 30t inner and, again seriatim, into the 45, the 41, and even the shameful 30X23 or 35. I twiddled seated up the steepest parts -- none longer than 1/4 mile -- seated, easy, comfortable -- except for the steepest 1/8 mile where I stood because it was more comfortable. I regularly clear these slopes on Riv #3 (70 fixed) and even #2 (75 fixed), not to mention the lethargic Fargo (38/32 = 34), but, tired as I was today, it was hugely comforting to know that I could master these minor obstacles without straining. And the bar: 42 cm Noodle, just shy of 1 below saddle. The great virtue of the Noodle, for me, is the deepish drop (140 mm) that allows you to have a (relatively) high flat and (relatively) stretched hoods, with nice, flat ramps, over a (relatively) low hook. I rode the flats and the ramps comfortably on the gradual inclines, and was glad of the stretched out hoods against the wind and when the road turned upward. I stood only for 1/8 mile or so on the steepest section in the 35, not from necessity but for comfort. I averaged 11.66 mph clock running including a stop at the PO to get my mother's mail from her box -- including triaging some of the junk because I hadn't room for it all. Altogether, a good ride, despite initial tiredness exacerbated by the g-d flat. A very brief ride that, on a fixie, would have made me regret riding. But with a 35 low and a bar with flat just 1 below saddle, No Sweat! Re: [RBW] Re: Stan's to Paris-Roubaixs on Ram
The instructions say 2-7 months depending on climate, which I take to mean that where it's very dry it dries up faster. I'll keep an eye on them. How *does* one discover if the sealant has dried -- besides getting more flats? I'd like to be pro-active. Also, Jim: when yours dries up, do you add more to the tube or use a new tube with new sealant? Nother question: If I were to use it in 700X60C tires, 2-plus tubes, how much should I insert? Tho' so far the Big Apples have done pretty darn well at resisting the evil thorn. I had enough bad experiences with Slime and True Goo -- to wit, larger flats where the sealant didn't seal but instead simply leaked into the casing, leaving a puddle of slimy mess. I am hoping that Stan's proves to be a more effective remedy. Ok so does me saying we are planning to ride the Erie Canal on Rivendel's make it on topic? :) Anyway, if you live in New York and want tourist dollars. May I suggest getting some shuttle service companies between Buffalo and Albany. After days of searching we've been unable to to hire anyone to take 6 to 10 people and bikes for a 1000.00 or less. Nobody really minds paying 200 per person on the smaller groups. Trains and Buses won't work for this size group as most have restrictions and it would require splitting the group up. We have alternative's as in the USBR 35 though Michigan - Nice shuttle company minimum 500 bucks 15 per bike and person over 5. We have fond shuttles for Natches Trace For the GAP ride.. (ok so I've done that twice and there are tons of shuttles. Shuttle services exist even for the Cowboy Trail. The Erie Canal is a long apparently fun ride but no shuttles? Even the state group rides says you are on your own getting back to your car but now shuttles.. so how does that happen. New York.. you are losing tourist money.. including the 3 days extra we had planned for motels and play. My rant is done.. guess our on topic Rivendell Bicycles will end up in another state. Well, no flat on the 16.5 mile rt grocery/PO run today -- return half carrying 42 lb in the rear. Question: I figger that the rider weight equivalent of a 42 lb addition to the rear rack is equivalent, assuming a 60/40 r/f weight distribution, to a 245 lb rider. Would a 245 lb rider be chancing things by riding 30 mm Parigi Roubaix's? I am careful to post over the more egregious bumps like our always present and very annoying (and up to 6 wide, tho' generally more like 4) expansion cracks. Re: [RBW] Re: Stan's to Paris-Roubaixs on Ram
I run stans in all my tubes here in CO for the same goathead nemesis. My experience has been that I will get about 6-8 months out of each tube before they stop sealing. At that point the little latex bits have clumped together into a space-spore looking thing and will either just tumble around in the tube, or be big enough that it's stuck in place. Even though you can still hear liquid sloshing around, the sealing bits have quit their job. When this happens, the tube is basically toast. I tried adding more sealant, but the spore was so big it was either impeding the flow or gather up the latex. When I remove tubes in this condition they look like snakes with a belly full of mouse. For me replacing both tubes even twice a year is faster, more economical, and less hassle than dealing with the constant flats. Here's a picture of a stans monster I cut out of a tube.http://statigr.am/viewer.php#/detail/434216101358959711_3889190For reference, this came out of a tube run in a 700x32 cross tire. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: OT Maybe? Riding the Erie Canal
Kelly: I have no idea of your origin destination points but an oft over-looked option is one way cars. Between major airports, it's often possible to book a one way car at a reasonable price (i.e., NOT huge drop-off fees). You have to book well ahead of time, and shop several agencies. You've got a big group but you could also try posting a Request for Shuttle here on the BOB list. I did that a few years ago when a train connection was cancelled well before we started our tour. Sure enough, a fellow lister came thru was able to organize a shuttle for the 100 mile connection we needed to make. Our group was only 5 so a bit easier to handle. dougP On Saturday, May 18, 2013 11:44:53 AM UTC-7, Kelly wrote: Ok so does me saying we are planning to ride the Erie Canal on Rivendel's make it on topic? :) Anyway, if you live in New York and want tourist dollars. I'll remove thorns etc, shake the wheel around to coat the tube and try airing it up...if it deflates, I replace with my spare and hope to make it back. I can't think of any way to check. I suppose you could remove the tube and feel around to see if the sealant has started clumping, but if my tubes are holding air, I dont mess with them. The sealant works by plugging the hole and drying so my guess is taking a tube out could potentially unclog some of the holes. Total speculation that. I do know that by the time I pull the plug on a tube, it's got hundreds of punctures. I've removed 50+ goatheads in one sitting, so if the stans sealed it for 6 months...I consider that a job well done and retirement is earned. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Strange happenings out there
My wife had to go out of town for the week. Bored, I decided that I would spend the day riding my Hillborne and then visit a few local bike shops and see what's selling out there these days. I haven't really been to many bike shops in the last couple of years (Rivendell has been my go-to place for most all my cycling needs lately). I ended up visiting three shops here in Reno, NV. I felt like I was in a weird sort of parallel universe. All of the stores had their racks filled with carbon race bikes with the handlebars wa below the seats. When I asked to see bikes where i could get my handlebars at or above the seat I was told at each store that they don't make them that way... unless I was interested in a beach cruiser type bike (single speed). It was explained to me that people want to go fast on road bikes, so they need to be hunched down to prevent wind drag. When I asked about seeing steel frame bikes, all of the salesmen told me that steel bikes haven't been made in years.. .WOW! At the last stop I made, a young kid that worked there (maybe 19 years old) whispered to me that there was a local shop that did indeed sell two steel bikes, gunnars and surly'sbut he couldn't remember the name of the store. Not sure if that is true or not, but I give the kid credit for at least trying (his boss tried to sell me a cervelo race bike two sizes too small for $7900 for weekend solo riding). Is Reno an anomaly or is this happening everywhere? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Strange happenings out there
This is an exercise in futility. It's sort of like going to Walmart to buy USA made goods. It's possible, but you'll be searching long and hard and your selection will be extremely limited. The reality is, many of the big manufacturers DID stop making steel bikes a long time ago. Aluminum has completely taken over the lower and mid level market, and the current king of high end exotica is carbon. There are some smaller brands that seem to be getting a foot hold with current steel offerings, but those brands are typically only carried by likewise independent retailers that most likely dont carry A brands. The smaller production and niche market generally lend to higher pricing which is going to automatically weed out a very large percentage of the buying populous. Like it or not when it comes to high end, the masses directly equate more money to lighter weight. I work for a shop that sells Cannondale and Trek and this reality is all too true. We stock some cool innovative bikes, some are mind numbingly light, some seem to have more tech than my phone, others have more suspension travel than my motorcycle, but they all have two wheels and get people outside. I have worked for this family on and off for 20 years and my loyalty to them goes beyond the bikes. I realize my take on bikes is contrary to the norm and that places like Rivendell are the hidden gems. I've seen behind the curtain and the industry can be rough and ugly and small guys dont tend to last long. Rivendell etal are kicking ass by persisting and persevering. That said, I shop at Rivendell via the web, and the three bikes I own are all steel and USA made. [RBW] Strange happenings out there
There are still places where the practical side of bicycling has a place, and here in Seattle we're lucky to be one of those places. We have a for-real Rivendell dealer (Free Range Cycles) that also carries Surly, Rawland, and VO. There's also 2020 who have awesome used stuff and a great do what works attitude. Bicycle Pull Apart is a cool shop that looks like it belongs in a post-apocalyptic world. Elliot Bay Bicycles deserves a mention since Bill Davidson (one of the owners) is one of the long time masters of steel and he makes wonderful, practical customs. He's a little racy, but hey, love him anyway. I also get the impression Minneapolis has things well under control with Jim Thill's shop (just got a great set of Dyads built by Jim himself. Thanks Jim!) Having said that, I used to live in the racing wasteland of Southern California and had an awful time wandering in the wilderness before I happened across a mention of Rivendell on Sheldon Brown's website. If not for that, I'd still be miserably doing occasional rides on a bike I hated, imagining that all cycling is a brainless workout that's meant to be suffered through. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Strange happenings out there
The market has changed dramatically, at least in more sophisticated (read: high bicycle use) markets. Here in ABQ, there are many stores that sell Surleys and Salsas and doubtless Somas, and other makers of steel or, at least, well designed everyday bikes are popping up all the time. You have a wide variety between Cervelos and cruisers. As for aluminum, IMO, it is the best thing that could have happened to the low end market. Hoist an aluminum beach cruiser with alum wheels and parts, and then go heft a Varsity or Sports -- and the cruiser and even the hybrid and so forth will be well made, too, often -- as long as you can find hybrid/city bike without front suspension. Several years ago a high end (=Cervelo and Orbea) shop carried a very nice aluminum Trek city bike, a modernized Sports, in metallic Kelly green, and it was a joy to behold and to lift -- didn't get a chance to ride it. Grant and, later, Jan (to mention just pioneers) have affected the market far out of proportion to their sales numbers. Much thanks to them! [RBW] Re: Strange happenings out there
Peter: As sad as that state of affairs may seem, it's pretty typical of what to expect in Southern California. I wonder how many sales are lost because people decide they don't want to ride a twitchy bike all hunched over. They just want to ride something fun (maybe more fun than a beach cruiser), the bike shop says they don't make 'em anymore, the entry level customer gives up tries another sport with an easier entry point. The closest shop to me is part of a multi-store Trek chain. They know me because I wheel my Atlantis in park it on its kickstand. A couple of the wrenches really like the bike (no, they don't get to work on it). A while back on of my kids who lives out of state was interested in a particular Trek model asked me to take a look. I told the sales guy I was just looking for my kid wasn't going to buy the bike from him. He knows me I picked a slow day to visit. This model came with the option of a compact double or a road triple, and the sales guy actually started to spout off what must be the party line about the simplicity of a compact double over the complexity of a triple, then espousing the benefits of a 10 speed cog system. It was painful to hear. I finally stopped him said George, you know me, you know my bike. How can you expect me to take this seriously?. He caught himself, said something about not sure how this all works out, actually. To his credit, he asked So what would you do?. I told him it seemed the most rational thing on this bike (sub $1,000 aluminum) was probably the road triple option with a wide range MTB cassette but please only 9 speeds. This sort of killed it with changing RDs shifters. BTW, the kid found a 2-3 year old comparable model with 9 speed road triple on the local CL. But what happens to the entry level customer who just walks into a shop cold, looking for something fun sporty but not necessarily BORAF ready? They want to bolt on a rack, toss on a bag do day trips, supported tours, fun rides. They're not racing or touring the world, they just want to ride. dougP On Saturday, May 18, 2013 4:24:48 PM UTC-7, PeterG wrote: My wife had to go out of town for the week. Peter, I don't tour or carry much, but the ability to use any size tire and the long chainstays makes the Roadeo just a great bike for me. My friends with their Carbon creations look at me cross-eyed, but I just really enjoy riding the bike. Its like my car, a late model Mini Cooper. Its not as fast as a lot of cars, but there's no car, no matter how expensive, that's more fun to drive. And, I can put my Roadeo in the back of the car. I had a conversation with Grant and told him that they came out with a model that fit a club rider like myself. It was during a visit to the shop in Walnut Creek. He sold me his unpainted frameset and together, we decided on a color, Mary's blue , his wife's favorite color. Even though I don't carry any loads on my bike, I and a true believer in Rivendell. Anyway, I am probably preaching to the choir. [RBW] Re: Strange happenings out there
As the retail bike buyer moves up beyond entry level comfort bikes, s/he is going to be coaxed toward a race bike with 700x23 rubber or a full-on MTB. Nothing wrong with those, but it's too bad that other options aren't readily available in most shops. Surly would seem to be the gateway drug for many of these shops, but if Trek or Specialized has the shop by the short hairs, it may not be feasible to bring in a competing brand, especially one that is antithetical to the marketing strategy of the flagship brands. So of course, the sales guy or gal is going to sell what's on the sales floor. That's his/her job! I'm one of the 30-something bike salespeople Ron mentioned, and I have no problem whatsoever with modern things like 10-speed or 11-speed cassettes, disc brakes, or threadless headsets. I prefer steel frames and forks, but carbon, Ti, and Al work, too. These details are trivial. The factors that really matter to me are tire clearance and braze-ons. It's possible to have a crummy steel bike that lacks these features, and it's also possible to have a versatile aluminum bike. Anyway, it's always a good idea to occasionally step out of the bubble of rivbike or BQ and see what's out there. It's getting better, believe it or not, but we're still outcasts. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I can't vouch for specific bike shops here in the N. CA. Bay Area because I don't spend much time in them, but the cycling diversity here is much better than it was 10-15 years ago. Along with the carbon wonder racers and motorcycles without motors, we have a plethora of commuters, cargo bikes, folders, Dutch Bikes, and even a few recumbents. Re: [RBW] Re: That Pugsley
All the Surly FBs have rear-facing track ends, which I don't like at all. Only downside of an otherwise very cool bike. Looking at the Salsa Mukluk just because of the drop outs, although it's Al alloy which is not my preference. But yeah, the Krampus looks awesome! When the fat bikes came out I thought what a truly ridiculous idea. Since then, I've seen all sorts of cool adventures on youtube (find the guys who fatbiked/kayaked in Alaska!) and have moved to a place where I have access to miles of creekbed with potato sized rocks (everything from fingerlings to bakers). I tried riding my bike with 2.0 tires and couldn't hack it. I'm going to try again with my bike with 2.4s - if that doesn't cut it a Puglsey is on the the shopping list. But Steve is thinking of getting one for a floor model (as well as one or a few Long Haul Truckers, which have been selling well). 210 mm Q factor shudder. But if/when one comes in, I will try it and report. -- http://resumespecialties.com/**i**ndex.htmlhttp://resumespecialties.com/index.html patric...@**resumespecialties.**com Albuquerque, NM -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
