[RBW] WTB: Albatross bar, brake levers, grips
Now that I've finally mustered the courage to try Albatross bars on my AHH, levers and grips disappeared from my cart and are out of stock at the mothership. Anyone have an Albatross cockpit they'd like to sell including the bar, MTB brake levers (silver) and grips? Riv has the bar, so levers and grips alone might be good. I have two Santana/Nitto-labeled drop bars that I can swap, if that's of interest to someone. I reside in Eden Prairie, MN 55344. [RBW] Re: Water!
Patrick, I have one overriding association with water in NM. On a camping trip my wife and I stopped for lunch at a state park. I've long since forgotten where, but there was a lake and a single, Indian family fishing and picnicing. We struck up a conversation and i asked him if the water at the park was safe to drink. He waxed eloquently about the water in NM, saying he would drink the water anywhere. Then he paused and added, except LosAlamos! [RBW] New rig and Sunday afternoon ride
Hi All, A couple years ago Rivendell mentioned in their mailing list update that their custom queue had gotten very short. This certainly planted a thought in my mind and after pondering for a while, being a huge fan of all bikes Rivendell, I decided to order my first custom from them, an all-rounder. If you are on the fence about going to Rivendell for a custom (or any bike), I advise going for it. Let's just say they go way, WAY above and beyond to help you find what you are looking for. Anyway I got it this past week and am blown away, I could not be more psyched on this thing. I built it up in an craze of excitement and have been riding it more or less nonstop, it's a blast. Here are some pictures from the local woods this past Sunday afternoon. The bike rides fantastically, comfortable and natural feeling. Monday morning bump! And.I've been thinking about why there hasn't been so much as a peep from any of my clydesdale brothers on this awesome 67cm DTT frame and fork! It could be the pricepoint..but it's probably the Phil bottom bracket I'm including in the deal. Those who know Phil, know their bottom brackets need special tools for mounting/removal/adjustment. Well, I'm throwing 2 Phil mounting tools into the deal as well! :) Make me a reasonable offer if my price is too high. I would love for someone on the list to grab it, because I know whoever gets it would quite possibly be getting the last bike they ever had to buy. It is that versatile, strong, comfie, fast (it certainly won't be the one holding you back!) and awesome. Some other notes on the Frame and fork: -Waterford built -Has Rivendell dropouts...I've seen some frames (like my early Waterford Bomba) that had Waterford Dropouts. -Two sets of cage bosses Thanks for looking. Fantastic, Matt! I'd love to hear about your custom experience (possible long term interest, mostly curiosity, as I have 5 other people to eventually get Riv's for before I would even consider pulling the trigger on a custom). What Riv's have you owned/ridden pre custom? What made you desire a custom that they weren't meeting? How did that get met in the custom? When you say Riv went WAY above and beyond, what were you looking for that they helped you find? I am delighted on my Hunqapillar and can't imagine a custom being anything but costing more money to do pretty much the same thing. Still, it's fun to play with the possibilities. I had installed at one time, a pair of 2.35s *with* fenders AND rode in mud. [RBW] Re: Overheard on Sierra to the Sea
Great read... thanks, Anne. Maybe a little red Foy will materialize at some point. Gotta keep trying! On Sunday, June 23, 2013 2:20:09 PM UTC-4, Anne Paulson wrote: Last week I was on the (very fine) Sierra to the Sea ride put on by Almaden Cycle Touring Club. It was tons of fun. Rivendell was represented by me, and also JimD. The first night, I hopefully snuggled my British racing green Roadeo next to JimD's orange custom, hoping that in the morning I'd see a little red Betty Foy, but alas, I was disappointed. That was pretty much the only disappointment of the entire trip, though. The food was super and plentiful, and somehow ACTC managed to route us across the entire state of California on fabulous roads. Some of those roads were rough: Dogtown Road in the Sierra foothills, some Delta roads and the fabulous Coleman Valley Road in Sonoma County spring to mind. My Roadeo with Rolly Polys purred like a kitten. The Jack Browns might have even been a better choice. Overheard: Rider #1: My neck gets so sore sometimes when I'm riding, I have to look down for a while instead of looking ahead. Rider #2: Me too, even though I know it's not that safe. Me: Have you tried raising your handlebars? Rider #1: ?? You mean tilting them? Me: No, just moving them up higher. Rider #1: (puzzled) I don't think you can do that on my bike. Jim Warren showed up to say hello and ask about the ride, on his Hunqa with the Big Bens. The two riders with me were obviously appalled at the the idea that someone might try the ride with Big Bens. (But they're so heavy!) In fact, Big Bens would be great. In addition to the idea that bikes need to be shod with 23 mm or 25 mm tires, a number of the Sierra to the Sea riders apparently subscribed to the common belief that extra clothing, food and equipment weigh less if you carry them in a backpack or in jammed pockets, than if you carry them on the bike. Saddlebags and front bags were not much in evidence. One day we rode from Calistoga to the Russian River. The optional route included Sweetwater Springs, one of those roads that is terrific in almost every possible way: deserted, with oak grasslands, then a secluded little valley, then a (steep) climb up through redwoods. The regular route was not too shabby either, but I chose the Sweetwater option. On the way up I passed a couple of other riders walking. I understand the appeal of compact doubles if compact doubles give you low enough gears. And for a lot of people (who are stronger than me or lighter than me or both) compact doubles do work. But riders who are walking the steep hills, or riding up them with some knee-destroying cadence in the 30s or 40s, need lower gears. It's sad to hear, The guy in the bike shop told me... when the guy in the bike shop obviously told the rider the wrong thing. I highly recommend Sierra to the Sea. [RBW] Re: New rig and Sunday afternoon ride
Hi Patrick, I have a few rivendell bikes already, and can't really say that any of them fall short in any way; they're all great! With a custom, I suppose one could say you get marginal returns performance-wise, over their standard models- I wouldn't say that about this bike, though, because it is clearly imbued with some kind of magic/wizardry- but a person could certainly see it that way.So you have to really be into their bikes to go for one. A custom does have its extra bells and whistles, and intangible niftyness I think. In addition to being custom designed by Grant, they are built by Mark Nobillette and painted by Joe Bell, for example, if that is worth something to you. I got to spec my own paint color (not that you couldn't with another model, too) by mixing together some oil paints and sending that and a fork from another bike to Joe Bell for inspiration (I also got to talk on the phone with Joe Bell, which was awesome). He hit the bullseye on the color in my opinion, it is the perfect hue for a bicycle. As far as ordering from Rivendell goes, they are incredibly nice and understanding to deal with and talk to, all of them. I was lucky enough to visit their HQ at the end of a long tour a few years ago, and I remember that they were all so cool (didn't get to meet Mark that time though unfortunately), and they even bought me lunch! RBW HQ is such a neat place, just bikes and bags everywhere, awesome (epic!) photographs on the walls, tons of bikeage in the air. I've seen your Hunqapillar (wicked nice!), and ride photos, and have to say I am totally jealous of your stomping grounds.Looks like some serious fun. Hi Patrick (Moore), Thanks! I've long admired your two Riv customs, and the way you have written about them says a lot about how great they are.The tires I have on this bike are Schwalbe 700x47 Marathons (measure more like 43 or 44mm)-they are not new, in fact, I've been riding the heck out of these tires for over a year now, and they still have the little nubs on them from the molding process... at this rate they are going to last forever (I love schwalbe for that). For other parts, the rims are Velocity Dyads, hubs are White Industries and Phil Wood, Tektro cantis, mechs are shimano XTR front and back, Rivendell guard crank, Tange BB, KMC chain, IRD ball/rollerbearing headset (that Riv sells) and pretty much Nitto or Shimano everything else that I forgot. Re: [RBW] New rig and Sunday afternoon ride
Thanks for the details. Yes, I love my customs -- wish I could afford more of them! My next one (let's just dream) would be an off road Rivendell to replace the Fargo but with much the same versatility and, first of all, clearance for 3 tires, but, secondly, that ineffable Riv handling. Or, wait: maybe a thinner tubed Rambouillet with rack and fender braze ons for max 32 mm tires +fenders -- like a mid '70s racing bike a la Riv feel-and-fit-and-handling. I'll be interested in hearing more about your riding experiences on the new custom. Gad, wish I had an inheritance! Glad to hear someone's Hilsen should be back in their hands soon. Just for everyone's info on this forum: Unless you have the original purchase receipt or some original record from RBW like an invoice, it may not be good to give out your serial number. If your serial number becomes public, I think any party might contest ownership and say that their bike had this serial number and that it was lost/stolen. It is important to keep original receipts/invoices for proof of ownership. I used to cruise a musician's forum. Everyone used to cover their serial numbers when they'd post pics of their gear for this reason. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. It seems like going to a 110 from 116 wouldn't make much difference (~3 mm difference per side). There is plenty of clearance between the crank arms and stays with the 116. It looks like I could bring each side in a full cm at least. Anyon experience this with the Phil Bb's? Re: [RBW] Re: 50K on a Sunday morning
Ecstatic to get a mid-day ride in this time of year. Typically it's 95F by 11:00 and not so fun. If I can get enough of the local movers and shakers on board with this, it might become a deal out here.
