pam hopefully someone can suggest a riv-ish option, but for non-rivish
there are a ton of shops which will rent you a hybrid bike in the city, it
runs about $20-30 a day.

a lesser known secret is that if you stay at a kimpton hotel, they have
bikes you can checkout for free. i've stayed at the harbor court (public
bikes, but only 2-3 so you have to get one early in the morning), i've also
stayed at the drake, which does not have any bikes on-site but if you talk
to the concierge they will give you a coupon for a free rental from a place
around the corner.

of course if you're not staying in a hotel this would not apply :)

[RBW] First Riv in the wild

Went for a ride on Saturday along the SoCal coast from Solano Beach to Torry
Pines State beach. At the base of the hill up to Torrey Pines I see a bearded
gentleman on a green AHH. I was riding my dtt AHH. It turned out to be Hugh
from this group. We had a great talk and after about 45 minutes or so he went
north and I continued south. It was great to meet a like minded rider and
compare bikes and ideas. Hugh took some pictures to document the chance
meeting. What great people one can meet on a bike. Ride often and ride safe.
Peace.

[RBW] Crazy New Urban S240

2013-07-06 Thread Liesl
My friend Sergio (who is, incidently, a lurker on this list) came up with a
brilliant idea: A nice long ride followed by a camp-out in his back yard!
What a hoot. We rode along Minnehaha Creek, down to Fort Snelling, up the
Mississippi through Mendota Heights and back to South Minneapolis. Stopped
at the butcher, picked up brats, grilled them in his back yard with some
other friends, set up our tents, built a fire in the fire pit, and slept
out. This morning, there was a bathroom...life is good. It's actually a
great idea for the urban dweller and I do believe we'll do it again!

give it a try and report back!

Glad the 107 worked. If you want lower Q than that then you are looking at a
different crankset and BB. Might as well just enjoy the bike for a while.

It makes no real world difference in riding to me, but if one is a
 perfectionist, it would bother them.

I'm surprised Riv is suggesting a 110 when the 107 gives symmetric arms.
The extra 3mm won't give you any extra ring clearance, unless one is using
some spacers on the drive side , which in that case a 110 works great for
that. This is what I do on my Bombadil, a 1.5mm spacer.

[RBW] Chris King Headset

2013-07-06 Thread Don Genovese
What's with the Chris King headset? I've owned at least twenty-five bikes
over the last thirty years, none with a Chris King headset. I've never had
a head set fail. Perhaps they will require replacement at some time but I
don't think they actually break. Why do people pay such outrageous prices
for a Chris King. IMO any headset is not worth that price. Just my rant.

[RBW] Morning coffee ride on the freshly painted All Rounder!

2013-07-06 Thread jinxed
This mornings ride has been in my head for a LONG time, and the last week

Caldera Keg by Trail Designs via Ocean Air Cycles
Acorn Mini Rando provided by the board - Thanks Thomas!
Green cap from Jenny "The Funky Drummah" Klug
Coffee and sunshine from the gods.

It should be of no surprise that when you assemble quality made, thought
out, tried and true products...the results harmonize effortlessly.

I enjoyed one of the nicest outings on my bike this morning.

Dan M. for sending me a barely used 107mm tange for just the cost of
shipping - the guy's a saint, I tell you). It fits just fine. Still lots
of clearance between the crank arms and chain stays and looks like at least
5 mm of gap between the inner chain ring and proximal chain stay. I'm sure
it could fit an even narrower bb, but are there <107mm cartridge bb's
easily obtained?

The bb that was in there was a 116mm. I don't notice much difference in
the Q factor feel. I realize the difference is only ~4.5mm per side and I
probably move my feet around on the pedals by that much incidentally
anyway. In fact, I noticed raising my seat made a bigger difference in how
wide the Q factor feels. Now I need to ride this darn bike!

2013-07-06 Thread Robert Barr
Like so many discussions I have followed with this group, it is informative
and helpful to read what solutions others have found. Baskets work best for
me. The large front basket holds my book bag easily and allows me to put a
raincoat or fleece on top for easy access.I also have reusable bags that
fit perfectly in the basket. A good friend swears by the cat litter bucket
panniers and helps our local advocacy group, IndyCog, teach people how to
make and attach them. It probably does help that we are both geologists,
and almost as a requirement have extremely high geek thresholds. Maybe a
big basket on the front and cat litter buckets on the back... Bob

Re: [RBW] poll: what do you have on your rack (s)?

2013-07-06 Thread Patrick Moore
If those others use are like those I've used on a couple of bikes some
years ago, I would urge (unless you just have a fad for baskets) you
consider good grocery panniers, those deep enough to swallow an overloaded
paper sack and with a lid. The Wald baskets I used were too narrow to
accept a paper sack and the holes are too big to secure plastic bags.

If you want solid panniers, you might consider Oyster Buckets (or whatever
they are called) or, for the ultimate and ne plus ultra of pannier
convenience (they are far, far superior to baskets in use if not fashion)
make your own out of kitchen trash bins, the kind that take standard "30
gallon" bags. I still have a pair, even though I gave up using them because
I felt silly riding around with a pair of trashcans (white, basic, kitchen)
strapped to my rack. But if you tolerate Wald baskets, you probably have a
higher geek threshold anyway.

I gave a second pair to my n-d neighbor along with a beater Schwinn gocery
bike I sold him for $60. He's still using them 5-6 years after the purchase.

Finally, you can customize your trash cans (white, of course) with any
painted-on or stuck-on design that strikes your fancy.

Re: [RBW] Re: 1 bike? Could you do it?

2013-07-06 Thread ascpgh

The contingency aspect of more than one bike gets my vote too; an obvious
fault at the beginning of the morning commute; the flat tire with no time
to spare. The worst for me, however, is the unpredictable quality of a part
or piece issue. "One bike" would need to have each of high quality and
durability; not all parts are available from a spectrum of quality that
goes as high as King headsets or SKS BBs. A "one" bike would (Chris King
cables?).

I had a front derailleur cable snap at the head on the way to work one
morning at the foot of the biggest hill on my route. Elapsing time removed
any moments to reflect upon cable quality (initial personal commentary not
appropriate) and the various bodges to fix it so I picked up the perfect
size of gravel from the curb and stuck it in the parallelogram of the
derailleur for a good middle ring chain line and got going with little time
lost.

[RBW] Re: 10 Bikes - could you do it?

2013-07-06 Thread Edwin W
Sam hil for daily riding. Got it.
Brompton (i have a crap little ss dahon as my foray into folding land)
Dutch box bike for 2 kids up front. Have a Joebike boxbike
Jan heine inspired randonneur as a go fast. I have 3 little kids I can't really
be out randonneuring all the time!
Fat bike for suspension mtb. That would be fun to show off!
Work cycles Fr8 for citibike cargo bike for when the boxbike is too much. I
love those things. I rode one in Chicago and this might be my next bike!
Hunq/Atlantis for touring (might replace the Sam hil? Not touring a lot with my
three little ones at home)
Classic schwinn tandem for date night. Got it.

See, all I need is 9 and I have most of them or something close. But you never
know what Craigslist might bring tomorrow.

Quite close, never quite there in bike ownership,

What about a Di2 Alfine hub with the battery in seatpost being charged by the
Dynohub?

I think I just heard a thousand heads explode.

Re: [RBW] Re: IGH on a touring bike?

2013-07-06 Thread IanA
When the bike is loaded up and heavy, it can sometimes be easier to
maintain balance on poor road surfaces by riding the bike. When pushing
the bike, one has to be off to one side or other and that can mean using a
lot of upper body strength to control the bicycle (careful of the back).
Meaning that when pushing a steep climb over rough ground, it can be hard
to maintain balance and footing. This generally falls under the heading of
expedition touring and for that the Alfine is probably not a great choice.
But for most general touring, I'd have to agree that that a person can
make the Alfine work reasonably well. It wouldn't be my choice though - I
value a wide gear range for touring.
