[RBW] Re: Welcome to Portland, Zack
Cecily- This fountain has several different spray modes. The one pictured is certainly the most bike friendly, and I'm always excited when I go by on a warm day and it's at this part of the cycle. You get a pleasant drizzle and are on your way. The other modes are more drenching. Highly recommend riding through a fountain or 2 once yer Betty is on the road. Tony- the auxiliary bar is so I can clear off the bars I hold onto. It maximizes available hand positions. I use a 2nd stem (threadless) instead of spacers and a cut-off straight handlebar. I dig it. Mike- Wasco County ride in the spring sounds great! I'm hoping to organize some sort of u-pick ride out there in Sept or so. Need to get in touch with Aaron to coordinate. David- We didn't get a very good look at Squeaky Peugeot Guy 'cause he was going so much faster than us. [RBW] Re: Big Front Rack loaded on a Hunqapillar... am I crazy?
I don't have the Nitto Big Front but do have low riders and love the way a little load low and forward stabilizes the front end. I wasn't a fan of front weight up high on my Homer, but a few pounds from a sleeping bag/pad strapped to the top of a front rack (Mark's) is/was fine. I like using rear panniers (in addition to front panniers) for longer trips but prefer the low riders + saddle sack combo for most overnighters. --Smitty -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Chris, Flickr isn't cooperating with that link for me, could you post another? I'm intrigued about your Trek 650B project, I've just about wrapped up my own... a 1982 715 (85% certain of the model) that now sports 650B wheels and 42mm Hetres (extra legre!). I ride the bike a ton for commuting and recreation and just did some mixed offroad gravel stuff a couple weeks ago where the fat tires showed there worth. Two things I'm considering now are getting a frame builder to 'dimple' the chain stays giving me a bit more clearance for the fat rubber, and also looking at the fork rake. I'm not thrilled with the light steering, I'd not call it unstable, but it does require more attention than I would like. Thanks Paul! I'm going forward with building up the bike, looks like I might have a line on some wheels from a list member already. I think the top tube on the Atlantis is a bit (one-cm?) shorter than other Rivs, so you might factor that in. It's more important to me than stand over. I would have fit on a 64c but chose a 62c for a couple of reasons: the top tube was slightly shorter and fit by reach better and I wanted a bit more stand over. If you've done any challenging off-loading, you'll have experienced the need to hop off the pedals and touch down on uneven ground. If the bike is on ground higher than where your feet land, a bit more standover can be more uh. accommodating? I'm also running 40c tires so that adds to the equation somewhat. On the road or light duty trails it's less of an issue. I think in the end what you'll be comfortable on depends on your riding needs will be. Given what's been shared on this thread, I'd be inclined to look for a trade for a 62c. A random twist that may occur is type if equipment. If the train is made up of the newer, double deck passenger cars, look for a blue bicycle logo on a car toward one end or the other. You can just wheel your bike on that without removing panniers. Melanie I happened to have this set-up on all 3 trains we used on our tour. BUT if the train is the older, single deck cars, they have steep steps up into the car. If that's the case, you need to corral the conductor (he'll actually be looking for you if you have a reservation) and LIFT your bike up to the floor level of the baggage car, about shoulder height. I can't do this with any amount of panniers. Same drill getting off. The conductor has to go into the car and hand your bike down to you on the platform. [RBW] Re: Big Front Rack loaded on a Hunqapillar... am I crazy?
Shawn: I've toured a fair bit with my Atlantis with various loading schemes. For self-contained camping, I use 4 bags find the handling best with the weight evenly distributed or somewhat more in the front pair. On lodging trips I'll use 2 bags in the front low riders. I always have an Acorn Boxy rando bag on a mini-rack on the front, sometimes add a saddlebag to the rear for extra clothes, food, water, etc. You'll have to try different configurations for yourself to find out what works best for you and your riding style. Some people really notice differences with just a few pounds of load while others are unfazed by 25 lbs at one end or the other. IME, once I get over 25 lbs it's nice to split it up, front to back. dougP On Saturday, August 10, 2013 2:15:42 PM UTC-7, shawn m. wrote: Right now, I run either a Large Saddlesack or panniers on a Nitto Big Rear Rack on my 54cm Hunqapillar, with a basket on a mini front for a little extra weight in front, and it works pretty good. But I'm curious if I wouldn't be happier with a Big Front Rack with panniers and a basket. Can anyone share there experience with this kind of load? I feel like I want more weight up front, more than I'm comfortable with putting on the Mini-Front, and I want the weight a bit lower, too. I'd probably keep the Big Rack in back for longer trips. I'm curious as to how it handles, both loaded and unloaded. Anyone run a setup like this? Thanks, Shawn M. [RBW] updated Rambouillet with improved Tektro 559's
Dear List: Some changes to my Rambouillet gave me an excuse to take some pictures. The changes include the improved Tektro 559's. IMHO, the new quick release button on the brake release is important, I'm glad they added it - - the old ones sort of opened up at bad times. It's such a comfortable bike, I just love it - - no fancy parts, it just a pleasure to ride. We rode from Healdsburg out to Jim Town and up Pine Flat today; the final 1000' of climbing left me grateful for gears that could objectively be described as ridiculously low. http://www.flickr.com/photos/41563482@N06/sets/72157635034191456/ Also, I posted some time ago about trouble encountered when I had the LBS swap out the Campagnolo triple on my Sachs, replacing it with a TA Carmina. The list's suggestions worked out nicely (thank you); with narrower chainring bolt spacing and a shorter bottom bracket, the bike shifts very nicely now. It's a great ride, very neutral and comfortable. (RBW content - Silvers shifters and Rolly Polly's). Pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/41563482@N06/sets/72157635034237136/ Silver shifters, new Selle Anatomica saddle, wider tires (Rolly Polly). The bike was fine before, just feels a little more right. [RBW] Re: Cracked Ramboullet
Chris, That is too bad about it taking longer than quoted. Though, I do not see why you feel the need to air these grievances with Riv in the public forum, when the best course of action would be to continue to work with Riv until your frame is repaired and returned to you. If you are unsatisfied at the end, you can quietly walk away. Best, Gabe On Friday, August 9, 2013 8:06:44 PM UTC-7, chris wrote: My Rambouillet (only road bike) has now been gone for repair going on 8 weeks and I was told a couple of weeks ago that the bike had been shipped from the frame repair shop to the painter. When I found out that the bike had been shipped to the painter I asked if it would be possible to pick it up in Sacramento (bike was repaired there and I was going to Sacto for the day) and Riv said that it was in Chico with no mention of the fact the painter never acknowledged receipt and was not answering phone calls so they speculate that he might be on vacation. Getting the whole story took numerous emails. Unfortunately, I haven't had a very good experience dealing with Riv. I rarely received repair updates unless I constantly emailed them and the final straw was the painting. Other lacking customer service was at the start of the repair when Riv said that they would send the bike to Bernie Mikkelsen for the repair and a few days later Riv said the bike would go to Steve Rex. When I asked for a clarification Riv responded that I could go ahead with Bernie if I chose but Steve Rex is dependable. I wouldn't question their recommendation, so why turn it into a selection on my part? Riv also asked at the beginning if I had another bike to which I responded I did not and no offer of a replacement so why ask? However, after complaining directly to Grant about the painting I got an offer of a replacement bike. However, no direct response from Grant. Offer came from an employee. Riv is a small company so why wouldn't Grant respond himself? I'm pleased that Riv stands behind their products by doing the repair for free, but the customer service was somewhat lacking. More on the Nitto R14 top rack. It came up if the stays were cut. And they have been to fit a smaller 650 Betty Foy. It's a 53 I think. I measured the length and they are 31.5cm with maybe a centimeter of adjustment available. I held them up to my 60cm Sam and no way would it fit. So get it if you have a smaller frame or I would consider letting it go for less to offset the cost of new stays. -Bill -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Max, Out of curiosity, could you explain the bolt spacing adjustment on your Carmina Crank? [RBW] Re: Any last suggestions before I have to throw my Bleriot in a dumpster?
I think at this point I have done all the fit tweaking I can on the drops Bleriot. For whatever reason, my body doesn't like riding it in drops position anymore. I might try Alba's on it and see if I can ride it that way pain free. That way I will be bolt upright and totally out of the drops zone position and see if that works. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Where to get replacement Kalloy saddle clamp bolt?
It is the *saddle* *clamp* bolt, not the *seat post* bolt. It is the Kalloy model seat post that looks like a Nitto Crystal Fella' copy that Riv used stock on their bikes last spring. They don't sell the posts or bolts for them as far as I can tell. It has a sort of cuff under the bolt head that fits into the hole in thenut under the clamp, if I remember correctly when removing it. I was trying to install a security saddle clamp bolt and saw that the typical regular bolt shape won't work with it. Just wanted a spare just in case. Been doing a lot of adjustments these days and hope I don't bust anything without a spare lying around. Anyone know? Don't wanna spring for a real Crystal Fella at this point. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I ordered the 55cm size as recommended by Keven, but she looks so small without all of parts. Is this normal? Should I measure her just to be sure?
