The chart that Jim posted is the one I have that shows a 54.5 cm. My other

the 54.5 to be added.

Try Fizik bar gel under your tape. It's the best of such products I've
tried, and it really does make a difference. If you can stand losing the
brooks tape, Cinelli gel cork tape over the gel pads would be a double-cush
whammy and also make for a fatter grip which may help in itself. I've had
similar problems tho not to that degree and I'm able to ride relatively
pain and numbness free with some combination of the above.

Good luck! Steve

Boy that sounds pretty horrible. A former co-worker at the bike shop had

use a full-susp 29er for quite a while. He also used a recumbent for a
while.

less weight is going to the hands is in order. I have the Albatross bars

first of all, condolences on dealing with what sounds like a terrible
health issue. rough stuff.

i don't suffer from anything close to that, but was going to suggest trying
a set of bosco bars. they help me with neck and back pain. the boscos get
the handle/grips up higher than the stem, and i absolutely never feel like
i am resting any of my weight on the bars. i wonder if having the grips
above the stem would be helpful, regardless of the height compared to the
saddle? (woodchippers look to me like they sort of slant downward from the
stem, unlike the boscos).

Hi Clayton,

I am very sorry to hear all of that. I have a lot of spine damage and for
a while was forced by back pain to a recumbent, both two wheelers and
trikes. I don't like them as much as an upright but they are super
comfortable and it is riding and is enjoyable. After some years I was able
to get back onto my uprights and now ride a Roadeo, a Fargo on bike trails
and a suspended 29'er on mellow single track.

From your description it sounds like recumbents might be worth a try and
might either let you get back to the Atlantis full time eventually or keep
riding it some of the time by mixing it up.

All the best for sure,
Tim

Let me add,* bolt upright* on Albas might be worth a try.

You may need a shorter stem, like an 8cm extension to get the bars back far
enough. That's what my Alba setup is. Least amount of weight possible on
hands - bolt upright.
I still get some hand stuff going on though.

I knew a guitarist once who told me that using those hand grips exercisers
eliminated his CT, if I remember correctly. Perhaps he caught it early. I
remember him grabbing a guitar neck to pick one up and yelling out loud
because it hurt.

Another one to suggest Albatross or other bar. Have had carpal issues in
the past and sitting more upright has definitely helped. From my
experience, elbow flexing more than weight on hands seems to be a big
factor.

Did have Woodchippers on my Fargo. After a while, they seemed to
contribute to the pain. This would take some work, but maybe a set of
Salsa Cowbell bars might be better. Less reach. You'd have to go to a
threadless adaptor and different stem as the center is 31.8.

Been going to something similar on a non-Rivendell bike. It may end up
with Albatross bars as

put no pressure on your hands. I 2nd the recommendation for Ergon grips too.
Where are you? Maybe there is a list member nearby who can let you try those
bars.

[RBW] Re: Help needed from the collective mind.

2013-08-29 Thread Clayton

Thanks to everyone for your advice. I sincerely appreciate the collective.
I should have expounded on my explanation. The conduction in my *hands*isn't
too bad according to the tests. My current position on my bike is
very upright. The lower drops are at the height of the saddle. I have very
little weight on the bars as ride mostly on the hoods. My doctor told me
the two places to avoid pressure on my hands are on the flat part on the
outside interior palm and just back from the center of my palm. With the
drops, I hang my hands from the fat of my thumb from the hoods, if that
makes sense, which does not touch either area. Ergons put weight on the
flat part of my outside palm. So do regular grips. Albas and such, also
don't work. My primary problemis in my elbow, according to my tests. I
have owned a tour easy, which was hell on the back because I couldn't
unweight over my rough roads and bumps. The only thing that makes any sense
to me is vibration? I think the best thing to try from your advice is
stupid thick bar tape. I'll try the Fizik tape with two layers of foam tape
and let you know how things go.Thanks again to all of you!

I just got back from my Nerve doctor, a Physiatrist, pain specialist...I
have had four total carpal tunnel surgeries. Three on my hands and one
ulnar nerve relocation in my left elbow. The results from my latest nerve
conduction study show that I have rather bad nerve damage in my left elbow
that is permanent. Riding antagonizes the pain and numbness. I ride a
Rivendell Atlantis and it has been pretty much my only bike for the past 20
years or so. I run a White Brothers suspension seatpost, B-17 saddle, 2.2
wide tires at 40 psi, 100mm dirtdrop stem at max extension and woodchipper
bars. I wear gel gloves and use brooks handlebar tape. I see two options.
Sell my Atlantis (oh God NO!) and buy a 29er with a front suspension fork
or full suspension (I have a bad back and have had multiple back surgeries)
or run my air pressure at 20psi with ridiculously fat handlebar padding. I
have very little weight on my hands as the *bottoms of the drops are
level or higher than my saddle*. I have tried flat bars, bike fits,
noodles, alt bars etc. The wood chippers are the most comfy so far. Does
anyone have any experience with numb hands and cyclist palsy? I am counting
on the collective mind...P.S. I have been a race team mechanic, a racers
coach and managed bike shops, so I am somewhat knowledgable on bike fit and
options. Also I can't ride stooped over due to my back problems, ie; road
bike position. Rest isn't an option, because I refuse to own a car (PTSD
issues) and the bike is my only transportation. Help? Thanks in advance.

57-59-61-63-65-67-69-71 are for 700c wheels.

Plus if I wanted new frame, I would have not posted here looking for a used
one. A new one for me, is $2300 plus 75.00 shipping to an American address,
plus Canadian tax which is 13%, when I bring it back over the border,
which is kissing $2700 American dollars. With the currency conversion right
at this moment, it would be $2845.Used will still be cheaper even with the
other costs being constant.

Dan, I should have bought your frame when I first saw it in the spring. At
the time I was going to go the 650 route so I discounted it as a possible
bike. Now I am kicking myself.

2013-08-29 Thread William
Yes, blakcloud, I assumed you were asking because you wanted a used one at
a fair used price. I pointed out that you can order one from Riv just to
dispute the assertion that very few of them were ever made. Even though
the text on the description page does not list a 55, I know that they will
take your order for a 55, and will recommend a 55 if that's the right size
for you. The drop down menu for the sizes you can order does list the 55.
I pointed that out to encourage your search for a used one. I expect that
there are a lot more than a half-dozen 55cm 700c Hilsens in the world. I
sincerely hope you find one in the condition you want and at the price you
want.

Re: [RBW] WTB: A. Homer Hilsen 55cm, 700c wheel size. FF only

2013-08-29 Thread blakcloud
Christopher that is a good question. I am trying to keep costs down and I
have a bike that I can transfer over 95% of the parts which includes a
great set of wheels.

As for carrying anything, I use a porteur rack with a Wald basket plus if I
need extra carrying power I use my Burley Travoy trailer. No rear racks or
saddle sacks for me.They may be great for others, I personally don't like
it.

I bought a Betty Foy for my wife and she loves her 650's with Hetres and I
can easily just buy a Sam Hilborne to keep costs down but there is
something so much nicer about the Hilsen. I have a hard time with the
sloping top tube with the Sam.

This bike as I have mentioned in other posts, is going to be a picnic bike
and nothing more. My wife and I like to ride our bikes to some waterfront
and bring some camping chairs and eat the Bento boxes that she has prepared
for the day (She is Japanese and a great cook, me on the other hand would
just order KFC and call it a day).

As I said if this doesn't pan out, I will come up with another plan but
thanks for the question. It does help me rethink some of what my wants vs
my needs vs the availability of what I think I want.

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne Anomaly ?

2013-08-29 Thread hangtownmatt
Well, I found the solution and I wasn't even trying. Feeling just a bit
too stretched with the noodles, I decided to swap my 10 cm Nitto Technomic
with a 9cm. It is hard to believe 1cm can make such a difference, but Sam
now sings through the turns. I suppose it's because it changed the center
of gravity as well as my balance point. Not sure, but I'm happy with the
results.

If I consciously rotate my hips in the direction I want to go it performs
admirably, but for me this is a conscious decision because my other bikes
didn't handle like this; at least not as dramatically Don't get me wrong,
I really enjoy this bike, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had the same

[RBW] Got them here free, so I offer them here first, free.

2013-08-29 Thread Patrick Moore
A lister very kindly gave me a very nice 7 speed fw Dura Ace (Doora
Ahchay) hubset cut from a pair of tubular wheels. This was to be used for
the Ram, but I lucked out into a 8 speed Ultegra wheelset for that bike.
So, if anyone wants these, he-er-she-er-it is welcome to them. No skewers.

The Caveat is that the hubs have been cut from the rims, but the freewheel
is still attached -- a decent 7 speeder, I think. So you'll have to build
the rear, at least part way, to get the fw off.

I will pay postage, but you must have a real use for them.

CONUS only!!!

Thanks once more to said lister and to all who so generously donated and
sold cheap for the Ram build, which turned into a perfect niche filler for
my stable. Latest: Have a very nice NIB SP dynohub that Stevie will build
into the front wheel next week.

 Hello Friends,
I'm planning a birthday celebration S24O campout for Monday Sept. 2nd. and
 would love some company.
The location is not set in stone and I'm open to suggestions. Mixed terrain
riding is welcome and desired. I live near the summit of Highway 17
(Redwood Estates) and I work in Scotts Valley. I'm planning to ride
somewhere within a couple or three hours of home late Monday afternoon and
then ride from the camp to work on Tuesday morning.
A few possible camp locations that come to mind:
 - Castle Rock State Park hiker/biker campground (but I've done that
twice now, so somewhere new is preferred)
 - I hear that there's a campground between Big Basin and Butano parks
 that's bike accessible
 - Niscene Marks park in Aptos has a campground that might be suitable
 - ...and I'm also open to guerrilla camping: Wilder Ranch? Other
 options?
I know the Monday of Labor Day weekend is probably not the best timing for
most, but it's what works for me, so that's when I'm going. :-)
Let me know if you're interested in joining me!
 cheers,
