Re: [RBW] Where do you find the time?
As the father of three small kids (ages 7 and 5 and 5), I work them into my riding whenever I can. I try to get out once a week for a few hours by myself, either on the road or on the mtb, and maybe a quick 10 mile evening spin once or twice a week through our local metro park. Aside from that though, I try to incorporate them into my riding, with the trailer, trail-a-bike, or their own bikes. Last summer, I set a goal to take the kids by bike to all 56 parks in our suburb. We did a lot of riding together and had lots of fun: http://bikingtoplay.blogspot.com/2013/08/summer-in-review.html It's a different riding style from Jan Heine's rando runs, but it's still rewarding and enjoyable. [RBW] Re: Where do you find the time?
Forget the brevets and the long solitary hours in the countryside. Ride with your children, at their pace. It's a great way to stay connected as they grow up, pass through puberty and into the world. And it will be a great way to reconnect when they return home. The Deacon's advice is spot on. Don't let yourself get too busy to just BE, at least one hour a day and one day a week. Commute consider a tandem. Michael On Friday, February 21, 2014 8:12:47 PM UTC-5, murphyjrfk wrote: I know it's a bit off topic- but it's still cold and snowy. I started riding because I had no time for recreation. In '71 I was working full time at night in an office and going to school during the day. The sedentary life got to me and I started riding my bike just to work a little recreation into my day. Never stopped. These days, I use my car once, maybe twice a week, the rest of the time I ride. Wanted To Buy 126mm OLD rear hub using 7 speed Shimano Hyper-glide Cassettes (not Uniglide) with 36 or 40 holes. Want to get a front dynohub wheel (700C) for lights for brevets and need a 700C rear. Currently have 27” wheels with 7spd freewheel. Allows me to upgrade my 1988 Schwinn Voyageur to a freehub without spreading the rear triangle. [RBW] Re: bike commute meals
I've been riding to work since 1996. My round trip commutes have been between 25 and 55 miles. I'm currently averaging 30 miles but have been know to wander a bit. My go to meal is: - a tall glass of water out the door. - followed by a banana (I drive to my starting point) - I pack the following: - 4 oz. plain Mountain high Yogurt (Costco) - 4 oz frozen mixed Berries (Costco) - One seasonal fruit (preferably citrus) - One apple (always seem to be available any time of year in CA; personal favorite is the Honey Crisp - leftovers from the night before if available What I keep at work: - Coffee (Whole Bean) and Grinder - Dry Milk for coffee cream (Sorry Anne. I do not think it's whole milk) - Green Tea - Oatmeal (Costco or bulk; depends on convenience) - Flax seed (health Food Store) - Chia Seeds (Costco) - Psyllium Husks - 3 lbs. Bag Raw Almonds (Costco) - Vietnamese Cinnamon - Dry Milk (Sorry Anne. I do not think it's whole milk) How it all unfolds: - Shower - Two cups of coffee w/almonds - Oatmeal; with 2 scoops flax seed, 3 tsb chia seeds, two tsb Psyllium husks, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, an keep it from turing into a rock by mixing it with Green Tea. - Followed by yogurt mixed with berries and seasonal fruit. - Sometimes I'll go out to lunch, but not often. Usually I'll walk four miles. - Afternoon, before I ride home, I eat the apple. It's quite the process and seems like I'm eating all day. I've been known to take my bowl of oatmeal to a meeting with the Exec's. Matt On Wednesday, February 19, 2014 8:02:12 AM UTC-8, Dave wrote: Hey now, What's your go-to bike commute meal? [RBW] Re: Where do you find the time?
It strikes me that seldom have I ever felt like I was riding enough. Which is a good think, me thinks. I'm guessing your really talking about finding the time to do the prep rides so you aren't seriously undermiled during the event. The best advice I ever got was that no ride is too short. At the time, I was working about 4 or 5 miles away from home, and didn't think much of those miles. Tried to get in serious rides and often cartopped the bike and drove in for a big group ride we did on Wednesdays after work. I was overdoing it on those, making myself too tired to want to ride the next day, and so it became less frequent rides and I seemed to suffer more on weekend outings.. A coworker mentioned that just riding every day had helped him (from a recommendation via a very competitive rider/racer), so I began doing that. After a month of not feeling like I was riding that much (though being on the bike made it much easier to add an indirect loop to the commute on the way home), I started feeling much stronger on longer rides. The other thing that a lot of folks do is kinda sorta ride the same way every time they go out. IME, it's better to go harder than you want to or much easier than you feel you can do. I do rides (which I dub spinning sitting saturday rides - where if I have a coastable, multigeared drivetrain under me, I keep seated, and every time I feel like I'm comfortable, I shift to an easier gear. Rinse and repeat until you are buzzing along in a ridiculously low gear.) On the other end of that equation, riding a fixed gear or riding a hard trail loop with a lot of technical climbing can be more of a challenge in a shorter period of time. Also, I think as you get older, your endurance seems to be additive. All those years of miles seem to give me a decent base that doesn't go away even if I have a low mileage month. Hope that helps, - J / cyclofiend.com On Friday, February 21, 2014 5:12:47 PM UTC-8, murphyjrfk wrote: I know it's a bit off topic- but it's still cold and snowy. Also thanks to Deacon for the encouraging words re: rest. If I may, I'd like to clarify about Sabbath and it's meaning. Rejuvenation would be a better understanding of Sabbath than rest. What rejuvenates you? How can you build Right Relationship with God, yourself, family, and friends? It may be a 2 hour bike ride, unscheduled. Possibly solo, possibly with your Bride and child, or friends. IT may be biking to Church, or the park. It may be lounging aroudn or cooking. The point is it's far less about what you are doing and for more about the effect of what you are doing. Doing this has helped me see each day as a gift to be unwrapped and cherished. [RBW] FS 60cm 2011 Green Sam Hillborne
Hello everyone, I'm looking to sell a green double top tube Sam that I bought new from Rivendell back in 2011. I'm going to preface this by saying that I love the bike and by no means wish to part with it, but I plan on moving to Japan this year to work and a folding bike like a Brompton or Dahon would be much more practical. The bicycle has been well used except when it was stored for a year in my family's house while I was studying abroad, so I would only say that there are about 2 1/2 years of regular usage. The Components are as follows: Tekro Brakes and Levers 46cm Nitto Noodle Bars 60 cm Nitto Stem Mark's Rack + Medium Wald Basket Sugino Double Front 44/34 Shimano XTR Rear 9 speed cassette 11-34 Shimano XT rear derailor MKS touring pedals Velo Orange double decker rear rack Wheels: Continental Contact tires Front: Mavic open sport 32 rim/Shimano Deore hub Rear: Mavic open sport 32 rim/Shimano Deore LX hub Brooks B17 honey saddle Here is the link to the photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/118442524@N04/ I tried to show some of the scratch marks on the front of the bike that occurred while locking it up and normal wear and tear. Also, the pedals need to be serviced so they make a little clicking sound. Other than that, the bike rides beautifully as expected of a Rivendell. I would very much like to sell the bike complete to someone local(I'm in the Monterey Bay area) as I'm in my final year of college and busy with my senior project. My asking price $1500 complete bicycle, but I'm willing to parlay based on parts and such. I'm also open to parting with the Medium Sackville Saddlebag for $80. Please reply to author if interested! [RBW] Re: Where do you find the time?
Great post! I'm married with five kids and a busy job, so I can certainly sympathize! Sometimes I read those ride reports and look at photos that people post and I get frustrated that I can't be out there more. But then I remind myself how lucky I am to be able to commute to work everyday on my bike. I'm out there on my Rivendell over an hour a day, five days a week, and I bet there are people who post photos of themselves on their bikes in amazing places that would be envious of that. Short rides around the neighborhood can be lovely as well. So are bike trailers for when the kids are little. I'm slowly coming to the realization that the kids grow up really fast and that precious weekend time is better spent with them (on bikes or not) than off on some 5-hour epic mixed terrain ride. I've always had a strong wanderlust, so it's not easy sometimes, but I'm trying my best to keep things balanced. Patrick - It's nice to hear about your relationship with the Sabbath. I keep the Jewish Sabbath, and while that causes me to miss many a Saturday So Cal Riv ride, I'm all the richer for it. One, a 1996 Trek 930 that I bought new in the box in 2008 for $149. It is a wonderful, mediocre, rigid fork, musa steel bike. Woulda bought ten of them had they been available. I have a 52 green and gold Sam H with the original Fatty Rumpkins and VO stainless steel fenders (58 mm). There is greater than 1 cm clearance between tire and fender all around, front and rear. No rubbing. Incidentally, the Fatty Rumpkins measure slightly wider (39mm) on Atlas rims than my Hetres (38 mm) on Synergy rims. [RBW] Re: Sam H. + Hetres + Fenders = Tire Rub?
I pumped the Hetres up to 50psi and went on a ride today. Overall, there was less of a feeling/sound of a rub. However, occasionally under heavy load the feeling persisted. Wondering if maybe its a bottom bracket issue (or maybe even a seat issue?). For reference I just measured my Hetres and at 50 psi they measure almost exactly 42mm on the VO rims. I don't think I'm at problem solved just yet, so I'll keep looking.
