Re: [RBW] Re: Mini-Beam

2014-03-06 Thread ted
All sounds very nice.
Shorter cranks are traditional track gear. Where 175 may be normal for mtn
bikes and 170 normal for road bikes, 165 is sort of normal for a track bike.
With a single ring and normal single speed chain line you shouldn't have
any trouble with clearance between the ring and frame. If you are using
standard geared bike ring and chain, chain line is not really all that
critical. If you do want to get chain line just so, the phil bb and its
two ended adjustment is real handy. Mounting your chosen crank on the bb
that came in your frame will let you decide what length bb you want to use.
Just measure the line you get with the one thats already there, and adjust
accordingly before ordering a new one.

Re: [RBW] Re: Mini-Beam

2014-03-06 Thread djbardwil
I am blocked at work from checking the RBW postings and tonight I found I
couldn't wait to get home to check - thanks Patrick (dig the shirt much),
ted, Pudge, David and Minh for your perspectives.

And with that, the order by which to choose components and considerations
seems:

1) Crankset - single ring makes sense; modest number of teeth, between 40
and 46; I like the Sugino RD and it comes in 165mm arm (I am a short legged
being), with choice of 46t or 48t. Many of you have a lower # of teeth but
I need to start somewhere. Not sure of the RD's chainline (i've seen
conflicting 44 or 42) but as close to the rear hub / cog chainline as
possible.

2) Bottom bracket - my QB came with a 113mm but each crankset has its own
recommended BB mm. The Sugino RD, with 130 BCD, is coupled with a 103mm
BB. If I go with Sugino's recommended 103mm, which is lower than Riv's
110mm general recommendation, must I worry about ring clearance against the
frame?

3) Hubs - Not sure which brand to go with. I saw these on Ben's:
 https://www.benscycle.com/p-3458-milwaukee-bicycle-co-hubset-32h-fixfree.aspx
They achieve a 42mm chainline and have a classic look without breaking the
bank, but i am not wedded to these.

4) Rims Velocity Synergy 650b with DT double butted spokes.

5) Cog - with a 46t ring, a 17t cog achieves 70". Again - a good place to
start. I live in an area that is pretty flat with a few rolling hills but
nothing too steep. I really like the WI DOS ENO 2-Speed 17/19 from a
quality and versatility perspective.

The fact that, for a lot of you, the QB is your favorite among many other
great Rivendells (I have a Custom, Atlantis and Sam) is exciting - each of
mine serves a different purpose and I never get tired of them.

Thank you again for your help!

[RBW] Nice Rivish bike on eBay (in San Francisco)

2014-03-06 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Not my listing, but feeling like I'm becoming an ambassador for mid-80s
classics, this is a great deal, especially for someone in the Bay area with
limited funds looking for an exceptional all-rounder... Here's a nice deal
on a sweet vintage ('86) Schwinn Cimarron:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/vintage-Schwinn-bike-/271325969397?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f2c49bbf5

Bay Area folks should be able to pick this up locally and save the shipping
charges.

I own 2 of these, and I honestly believe it's one of the finest bikes I
have ever owned. My preferred ride is an exact replica of this (same color
and year but in a larger size)... Frame is fillet-brazed at the head tube,
lugged at the seat tube, lugged fork crown, mid-fork braze-on...and has
quality components (old school Deore Deerhead, and gorgeous bronze anodized
rims. This was said to have been built at Schwinn's Greenville,
Mississippi plant. The quality is really exceptional... it would take very
little to spec this out for touring or everyday, all-around use. Take a
look at mine.

Recent shot of my Cimarron:

Hope somebody snatches this one up... Peace,
Bobby

I have a WI 17/19 on mine, and really like that option. Gives just enough
difference at times. But I rarely go to the 32T front chainring.

[RBW] Re: Favorite Coffee (regular and decaf)

2014-03-06 Thread David Banzer
I messed around with the popcorn popper way, until I set it on fire trying
to roast too many continuous batches. My current method is an old wok and
large wooden spoon constantly keeping the beans moving. With a little
practice, you can get pretty good roasts. You might have a suitable old pan
already, no extra equipment needed.
Even the worst batches made a better cup than a lot of coffee shops in my
area.
And it's a fun process to watch and experiment with! And for decaf you're
more than likely going to get more dialed in roasts that suite your needs
than other roasted coffees.

shifting to the 26. I now use a single 42, it may depend on your terrain, but
i can handle hills fine, and those i can't i just get off and walk, it's not
that big a deal.

i have a WI Dos FW 17/19, and even that i rarely switch. a single-speed
changes your perspective, it's hard to understand coming from a multi-gear
bike. i strongly suggest you get the bike rideable as soon as possible and see
what works for you.

i ride 42/17, i'm not the strongest rider but it works for me!

also concur with Tom, QB is my favorite bike in the bunch.

My QB originally had the Sugino XD Double; does the double chainring typically
get used in both rings or do most just keep it on the larger 40 ring with the

Paul's brakes are expensive but they will last forever and all the parts

So I got the New Albion Privateer completely dialed in with Alba bars and
have done about 50 miles. My other bikes all have drop bars and are all
meant for fastish club-type riding = no baggage. The more upright Alba
riding position is a new sensation and I was wondering how climbing and

climbing I am staying in the saddle more and definitely use more leg power.
And noticed when push comes to shove, I can get on the fronts of the
bars and stand up on the pedals to get even more power. Descending is
another whole story since the center of gravity seems up there compared to
riding leant over on drops; tops or bottoms. I think the Privateer with

I’ve had my Quickbeam for 4 years, and it remains my favorite bike (I also have
a Homer, an Atlantis, a Bombadil, and the Mystery Bike). I have shifted to the
small ring exactly once, just to see what it was like. Rolling country around
here, but no long sustained climbing. 68 gear inches works great for me for
that kind of terrain.

If you are going to buy the whole fixed gear esthetic, you quibble over even a
single tooth so you will want the option for odd tooth rings. Eighth inch
chains, cogs and rings are nice too. You might want a 144bcd crank like the
Sugino 75, if you don't mind a lower limit of 42t on your rings.

My QB originally had the Sugino XD Double; does the double chainring typically
get used in both rings or do most just keep it on the larger 40 ring with the
26 ring for the rare occasion? I'm wondering if a single crank like the Sugino

Re: [RBW] Re: Recommended Coffee Grinder

2014-03-06 Thread Matthew J
A good electric grinder will easily cost several hundred dollars.
Commercial grinders go neat $1k if not over.

I much prefer a manual as personally I would rather not use electricity if
there is a feasible alternative. The problem with many of the less
expensive manual grinders is they either cannot adjust or if they do it is
more rube goldberg than what you get with a good electric. Adjusting the
level of grind is important if you brew coffee in different ways as well as
experiment with the type of beans and roast.

The Lido in concept will have the same precise grind control one gets from
the high end grinders without using electricity. I just wish the darn
things would come in stock so I can try one out.

[RBW] Re: Favorite Coffee (regular and decaf)

2014-03-06 Thread Ron Mc
the sentiment is mostly humor, Deac. If I were purchasing decaf, it would
be French Roast and brewed in a press. I smoke my cigars, and was also
posting on the cigar board this morning. I smoked cigarettes for 17 years
- that was Many years ago. I quit then by - ok, prayer - and chewing
coffee beans, which answered the 3 instant gratifications, oral fixation,
toasty flavor, and stimulant. From the cigar board I also know many fine
coffee roasters, who have refined their tastes over the years. Every few
years I meet for a coast kayak/fishing trip with a buddy who has honed his
coffee blend to finest I've ever tasted and can't get it too strong. I
make the breakfast tacos.

2014-03-06 Thread Deacon Patrick
I understand the sentiment, Ron. I am frankly as surprised as you, if not
more so. In defense of hairless cats, er, decaffeinated coffee, here is my
explanation. Adrenaline rushes are bad for my brain. They release
adrenaline and cortisol and other "short term gain/long term debt" things.
Caffeine stimulates the release of Adrenaline and friends.

What is fascinating to me is that with the Swiss Water Method of
decaffeination, the flavor of the bean remains mostly intact. In addition
there are "things" that my brain experiences, as with dark, unsweetened
chocolate, and far more so with endurance aerobic running and biking, that
help it without the long term need for recovery. However, I only get this
effect with freshly ground beans brewed well. So, it is possible to be a
decaf coffee snob. Grin.

Re: [RBW] Re: Recommended Coffee Grinder

2014-03-06 Thread justinaugust
It comes back to the same thing as bikes.
You can get around on a BSO from Wal-Mart.
You can get around on a low-end aluminum big-bike maker hybrid.
You can ride what "the pros" ride.
You can go Surly/All-City/Salsa.
You can go econoclastic Rivendell.
You can go custom.
And much much more.

It's all about your priorities and what you enjoy.

-Justin, with more coffee brewing equipment than Bikes

Similarly, I love the aroma when visiting El Molino, in Ybor City near
Tampa. A small roaster serving Cuban restaurants. Once in a while I'll
order online, now that I've moved away, but it's not as good as getting
dark roast that was roasted earlier that same day.

Great place to visit - smells wonderful.
