[RBW] Re: The Atlantic article about cycling in the south

2014-03-09 Thread jtallman

Laws to protect cyclists are great, but what good are laws if they are not
enforced? I live in southwest Virginia. Here is a sample of my commute to
work, about exactly 1 year ago.

http://youtu.be/R0yp4zrb3QY

Not only is this illegal, but I consider it to be harassment. This is not
the only time I have been harassed by law enforcement, but it is the only
one I have evidence of.

I did report this to his superiors and was assured it would be taken care
of. No idea what happened, because it was a personnel issue.

I have been hit twice by motorists in hit and runs, one reported to the
Virginia State Police, and the other reported to the Bristol Virginia
Police. Each officer politely took my report, but not only were no charges
filed, they never even attempted to contact the drivers much less charge
them.

Reminds me of the quote by Aaron Levenstein: “Statistics are like
bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital.”

As one who spectated, in first person, non-enforcement of a broken law
when police responded to where I was hit by a motorist, I feel the same
about legislated morality. Bureaucracy attempts to create outcomes among
the otherwise disinterested or uninspired. These are individual attributes
that reflect well on larger populations when enough project them. It is a
failure by generalization to not expect the exception, a remnant habit from
when situational awareness and Mazlov's hierarchy framed my daily to-do
 list.

Drivers don't avoid bicyclists because there are laws that say you'll get
in trouble. It is a pop quiz for the individual at the wheel, a brief one
question test that will demonstrate either their humanity, awareness and
necessity to express concern for another or the validation of their step
onto a slippery slope leading away from all that is good.

I like to think that for my years and miles of cycling, the places it has
taken me and the people I have met, that my personal statistical result is
that more people are good, right and just versus otherwise.

They've actually lead to some pretty good friendships IRL, which is
the best part of them. The other thing I love is seeing new areas of
the state I've never been to. Amazing to explore back-country from San
Diego to Ventura with the above-mentioned folks.

I also love the idea of the organized rides/brevets/populairs that are
happening like the D2R2 in Vermont, and La Ruta Loca in the Bay Area.

So I think to myself: Why not combine the two? Which gives us this:
 http://redlands-strada-rossa.blogspot.com/

Some locals and I are trying to put on an organized ride, that shows
the best of Inland Southern California in the Spring, and keeps people
on as much dirt as possible. The rest is majority back/rural roads.
Many of the SoCal rides have been on parts of this route, but this
links the segments together in an amazing loop that comes out at just
 about 100km.

A decent amount of climbing to keep folks honest, but there are no
chest-bursters. Some singletrack as well. Not terrible technical, but
1km section of climbing that may cause some walking. Not a biggie.

The vibe aimed for his an extended Riv-Ride. There are no timing
devices, no podium spots, no t-shirts, just the knowledge that it'll
be good people on a good route.

And it's free! Not a money-maker, either for for profit or charity.
Just a good ride! I am trying to arrange a post-ride meal and party
hosted by the Redlands Bike BBQ http://www.bikebbq.com/ that will be a
donations-only set up. They're good people and I'd like to help them
out, but again, that's not the point of the ride.

So long/short: The ride is on March 15th, 2014. Weather should be
great. I hope many of you can make it here for this. Cheap/clean/safe
hotels in town. Quaint historic downtown to walk around and lots of
Victorian, Arts Crafts, MCM homes to look at for significant others
that may not be into the whole 100km bike ride thing.

Oh, and two independent breweries in town as well. Just thought I'd
 mention that!

Yes, you just have to match the number of speeds. 9 speed brifters are not
hard to come by. 3500 Sora is about the same as 105 from 6 or 7 years

Of course any Shimano brifter will work with your Shimano derailer and

Or a 10speed Campy brifter will work with an 8 cog Shimano cassette, and an
11 speed Campy brifter will work with 9 cog Shimano cassette.

Querying the collective knowledge here. We're having a recurring problem
with the rear tire on my wife's Betty blowing out at around 60 PSI and
above. Schwalbe Little Big Ben, which is rated for 50-85 PSI. Yesterday,
it blew two blocks from home, after being topped up with air, ithad been
ridden with no problem for several months since the last blowout. Thought
it might be rim tape, so we actually swapped the whole wheel, since we had
a spare. Still happens. Once, it blew just after inflation, in our hands,
when we were replacing the tube from a prior blow out. I'm thinking it
must be the tire itself, but I don't see anything obvious - Maybe a
slightly rough patch near the bead, but it doesn't seem to have any obvious
pointy bits

Thoughts?

Re: [RBW] Exploding Schwalbe?

2014-03-09 Thread Patrick Moore
If it is not the tire blowing off the rim, the consider the bead and the
rim tape.

I had a pair of Kojaks whose wire bead apparently included excess lengths
of wire only flimsily held in place by the casing. These worked their way
loose gradually with obvious consequences for the tubes. Even after I'd cut
off the exposed wire and covered the end, more wire would work loose and so
on. The NA supplier replaced them.

One more sneaky little provoker of flats is shifting rim tape. If the
puncture is in the valve side of the tube, consider this one. With poor
tape, the pressure as the tube is inflated can push the strip away from a
spoke hole letting the tube cut itself on the edge of the well or on
exposed spoke.

(Years ago, storing my prized Falcon near my bed, I was violently awakened
one night from the depths of sleep by a loud explosion, which proved to be
a tube bursting from this cause.)

[RBW] Exploding Schwalbe?

2014-03-09 Thread jinxed
It sounds like the tire bead is not fully seating on the rim and as you
increase the pressure the tube is forcing it off. When you get a tire that fits
loose it can be tedious to air it slowly while rotating and being sure the
bead is seating.

[RBW] Re: Exploding Schwalbe?

2014-03-09 Thread IanA
I had this issue with a tire a few years ago and I really thought the tire
was incorrectly made. It blew off the rim in the stand and then I after I
had it mounted, it happened again some time later while out riding. It
turned out, as the tire fit quite tightly to the rim, that I was pinching
the inner tube. This is symptomatic of blowing immediately, but if a very
small part of the tube is pinched, it can actually ride like that for quite
a while before blowing. Now, I always make the tube slightly tubular with
air before installing in the tire, once the tire is fully mounted, I leave
the pressure very low and work the bead-seat around the rim both sides and
make sure there is no pinch.

Ian A/Canada.

2014-03-09 Thread Michael Hechmer
This certainly does sound like a pinched tube. What do the holes look
like? A pinch produces two small holes that look like a snake bite. If
this is the case, after mounting the tube go around each side of the rim
pushing the tire in and make sure you can see the rim. Then run a lever
around between the rim and tube. Put about twenty pounds in and inspect
the rim - tire connection. If it's OK add another 20 lbs and repeat.

Since you have swapped wheels it don't sound like a rim defect. Also,
from your note it sounds like it is only the rear. Have you considered
swapping the tires? Also, I always mount the label next to the stem so I
can more easily find a relationship between the tube and something embedded
in the tire.

[RBW] new suntour xcd rd

2014-03-09 Thread ted
On the off chance that somebody here is interested in the new Suntour
branded rear derailleur, here are my short term observations.
Short story, seems to work fine.
Longer version:
Ordered from Harris Cyclery on a Sun. evening. Arrived on the west coast
Wed. afternoon. Well done Harris.
Fairly nice looking piece, no black paint, rear plate of the parallelogram
looks like dark colored stamped steel. Surface of the cage not polished,
looks a bit unfinished. Weight ~233gr (not that anybody should care).
Length of cage ~76 or 77mm (c-t-c on the pulleys). Traditional cable
routing (as opposed to current XT low profile style).
Said to accommodate a 39t capacity and a 34t max cog.
Went on my country bike with 46/30 crank, 11-32 9sp cassette, and
dura-ace 9sp dt shifter (which I put in indexed mode).
Fifteen mile mixed terrain ride (~50/50) on Sat, ~65mi road ride on Sun.
Gears worked fine, no drama no troubles. Granted I am probably not what you
would call a demanding user, I typically don't shift under high load and I
don't mind if it takes a beat to complete a shift, so of course YMMV.

[RBW] Re: Exploding Schwalbe?

2014-03-09 Thread Ron Mc
I'm with Michael - sounds like pinched tube. The best way to avoid pinched
tubes is to install the bead over the rim, starting just beside the valve
stem. A bit of air in the tube, pushing the tube into the rim ahead of the
tire bead, and gradually work your way around the wheel back to the stem.
As you approach the stem, you have gradually let air out of the tube.
When you get close to the stem, finish seating the bead by pushing the
stem as far into the tire as you can while you seat the last piece of bead.
Add just a bit of air to the tube, and go all the way around the tire
rocking the bead to free any pinches.

[RBW] Re: Exploding Schwalbe?

2014-03-09 Thread Ron Mc
was trying to say you have to gradually let air out of the tube as you go
around seating the bead. When you get back to the stem you should flat the
tube before you push the stem in and finish the bead. Pushing the stem in
is what avoids a pinch at the end, which is always the toughest point.

On Sunday, March 9, 2014 1:17:24 PM UTC-5, Ron Mc wrote:

I'm with Michael - sounds like pinched tube. The best way to avoid
pinched tubes is to install the bead over the rim, starting just beside the
valve stem. A bit of air in the tube, pushing the tube into the rim ahead
of the tire bead, and gradually work your way around the wheel back to the
stem. As you approach the stem, you have gradually let air out of the
tube. When you get close to the stem, finish seating the bead by pushing
the stem as far into the tire as you can while you seat the last piece of
bead. Add just a bit of air to the tube, and go all the way around the
tire rocking the bead to free any pinches.

On Sunday, March 9, 2014 1:07:39 PM UTC-5, Michael Hechmer wrote:

 Keep us posted.

Re: [RBW] Re: Mini-Beam

2014-03-09 Thread djbardwil
The weather cooperated yesterday at 53 degrees and I was able to get out on
the Sam for my 10 mile loop but this time I kept it in either the 36/14
combination (66.9) or the 46/18 (66.4) for the trip. Funny but despite
the proximity of these two gearings, the 36/14 seemed a little easier from
a start/stop, and I think I've found a reasonable target (65-66) for my
first set of rings and cogs.

If I go with the White Track Hubset, which is not quick release, I doubt I
will be wrenching the hubs to move the chain on a DOS ENO. In that setup I
might go with a ENO single freewheel (flip) and add a fixed cog (flop). A
crank that really interest me is the IRD Defiant with its classic look and
single ring. However, it is a 46t ring / 144 BCD and somewhat limited in
choice of ring replacement. IRD recommends a 110mm BB to achieve 42mm
chainline, but I wonder about the 44t ring clearance of the chainstay. The
46t ring and 18t freewheel would duplicate the setup noted earlier.

 Dear List,

 Here's a note I just posted on iBob, it's about a frame I got from Grant a

biking for a number of years - - aluminum bikes and index shifting didn't
suit me too well - - then one night over a few beers the Right Reverend
Mookie Rex handed me a Rivendell Catalog, which led to the purchase of this
frame, a renewed interest in cycling, and many good times since.

Here is what I just posted on the Bob list:

With quite a bit of help from the list, this project is finally done:

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/41563482@N06/sets/72157642068014924/http://www.google.com/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.flickr.com%2Fphotos%2F41563482%40N06%2Fsets%2F72157642068014924%2Fsa=Dsntz=1usg=AFQjCNF_clrg9dd2y8uOGxNHN8wF_i85Hw

It's an older Heron Road frame, just a bit of beausage. I got this bike
from Grant Peterson maybe 15 years ago. It was hanging in the garage, and
has a new life as a 650B. I haven't ridden it much, just around the
neighborhood, but I like the way it looks and feels.

 Parts include the following:

Phil Hubs from the original build, now on Velo-Orange rims with Soma
 B-line 650x38s.
 Sugino PX crankset in 26-40
 Shimano Deore r/d
 Suntour Superbe Pro f/d
 Superbe Seatpost - 27.0
Nitto flat bars - these suckers are pretty heavy...
Selle Anatomica Titanico X for Clyde
 Tektro Big Mouth
 King Iris
 Thin Gripsters

I'll take it out for some hills this week and will send along a ride
 report.

 thanks again -

Re: [RBW] Brifters on a country bike

2014-03-09 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
To answer your question, I use brifters with my Deore just fine, but
they are 9-spd brifters (Ultegra).

My only dislike about brifters, is that in my experience, they don't
work as well with non-standard chain ring sizes. I was always working
with trim positions etc. with my standard/favorite setup with 28-38-48
rings. I got tired of it and went to bar-ends, and will not go back.
With that said, I still use brifters on both my tandem and triplet
bikes, but I use the (more or less) Shiimano standard chain ring setup
there.

Re: [RBW] Brifters on a country bike

2014-03-09 Thread Tim Gavin
My gofast Giordana has Sachs (Campagnolo Ergopower) 8 speed brifters. I
like them a lot, and appreciate the high quality feel of the Campagnolo
stuff. It just feels solid and works well after 20 years.

I bet the high end Shimano stuff (with metal levers) is similarly nice, but
I've only tried Tiagra and Sora 9 speed controls. The plastic levers on
those felt flimsy.

One advantage of Campagnolo brifters: they're much easier to rebiuld/repair.

One disadvantage of brifters in general: they're designed for drop bars,
and don't feel natural on other bar shapes. Bar-ends are more versatile in
that regard.

Worth adding to this fine advice, in some circumstances an excessively
wide tube makes it very difficult to seat the tire without catching the
edge of the tube under the bead. If that's an issue, going to a
slightly narrower tube can make tire installation a lot easier.

it blew just after inflation, in our hands, when we were
replacing the tube from a prior blow out. I'm thinking it
must be the tire itself, but I don't see anything obvious -
Maybe a slightly rough patch near the bead, but it doesn't
seem to have any obvious pointy bits

Thoughts?

Very nice! I have similar clearance on my Riv Road 650b conversion.
Plenty of room above for fenders, but no room at the legs/stays for
anything wider than a 38mm tire. I have Lierres on mine; the red B-lines
look great.

[RBW] Standard reach brakes- Tektro 539 or 737?

2014-03-09 Thread SJB
Since I've had no luck selling my VI rando frame, I think I'll repurpose it
as a flat bar road bike.
Since I've sold off many of the VO's components already, I'm in need of
brakes.

Looking at the Tektro offerings, I see two that should work, the R737 and
R539.

For the life of me, I can't see what distinguishes one from the other.

Would any of you have experience with these levers and be able to provide
some insight?

Thanks

PS-look for a Reynolds 531, Waterford X-11 cyclocross frame to be offered
here soon.

[RBW] Pre-Spring Cleaning

2014-03-09 Thread Corwin
I apologize for spamming the list. I posted this message once before - but
a bunch of unintended text was captured and included in the post. What
follows here is the intended text.

Stock wheelset from Quickbeam

These are the original wheels that came with my Quickbeam. Suzue
quick-release
hubs, 32 spokes. Rear is threaded for freewheel on both sides. I have ridden
fixed with these wheels using a fixed cog and no lockring - but you can't
backpedal.

Aasking $300 shipped.

32mm/700C Panaracer Speedblend tires. Bought these from Riv after they were
discontinued, just before they ran out. Kept them for many years in a dark,
airtight container. Recently mounted them. Have at most 250 miles on them.
These tires draw attentinon and create conversations everytime I ride them.
This is your chance to own a piece of history.

Asking $60 shipped.

Brooks Team Professional Saddle in Honey

This was the saddle I originally mounted on my Quickbeam. Since I don't
treat
my saddles, it's still hard as a rock (just the way I like it). It does
appear
to have acquired some beausage - I'm throwing that in for free.

Asking $50 shipped.

Nitto 13cm UI-5GX Threadless Stem

Nearly new. Mounted, ridden 20 miles.

Asking $30 shipped.

Shimano 22 tooth Singlespeed Freewheel

The original freewheel sold with the Quickbeam. Ridden less than 50 miles.

Asking $20 shipped.

AC Racing 15 tooth Singlespeed Freewheel.

Got this several years ago from Patrick Moore. He said he had no freewheel
removal tool for it. I never found anyone selling one either. That did not
stop me from mounting it on the Quickbeam. A great freewheel. My
understanding
is that it's a BMX freewheel. Finally got it off the Quickbeam with help
from
a BMX guy a couple doors down from Riv HQ.

Asking $15 shipped.

Delta Seat Post Rack.

A great rack I have used on several bikes. I have safely carried a laptop in
it's original box, strapped to this rack. I am sure it will handle 10 or so
pounds. I would not ask this rack to carry groceries - but for small,
lightish
loads, it's great.

Asking $15 shipped.

Cygolite Tailight

Bought this taillight a few years ago. Has been sitting around in the box.
If
you can use it, please come get it.

Free, local pick-up.

Single bolt 27.2 alloy seat post

Not sure how I came into this post. If you can use it, come get it.

Free, local pick-up.

Velocity 700C Fusion Rim

Originally laced to a Chris King Classic Cross hub on my custom. Always ran
straight and true. Same hub is now laced to an offset A23 rim.

Asking $20, local pick-up.

Zinsser Amber Shellac

The bars on my Quickbeam were originally amber shellac over tan cork tape. I
spent many hours maintaining the appearance until Mark told me that cork
tape
is washable. This can is nearly full. I applied maybe 10 light coats to my
bars. Yours for the taking.

Free, local pick-up.

Alloy Kick Stand

Came off a used bike I bought. Looks pretty long. Trim it as you see fit.
Might
benefit from some clean-up.

Free, local pick-up.

herehttps://picasaweb.google.com/116556488890578434024/PreSpringCleaning.
For items listed as local pick-up, I'm in Albany in the

Just in case anyone is wondering if there is a Quickbeam for sale here - the
answer is no. A couple pictures are included as evidence the Quickbeam is
alive and well.

[RBW] rear rack mounting question

2014-03-09 Thread Dave
Hey now,

I swapped out my paul centerpull brakes for Silver brakes on my
proto-bleriot, and now the non-drive side seat-stay attachment is
completely blocked by the brake. Do I need both seat-stay attachments for
the rack (nitto big rear rack) to be safe/sturdy? Should I try moving the
rack to the lower set of eyelets on the rear dropout?

Tried to capture the issue in a photo:

Ended up with a big group 8 by my count.
3 were newbies.
4 had blue jeans on.
1 came but didn't sleep
3 ladies.
1 offspring of younger years.

Meant to leave at 4. Ended up leaving 530ish due to hot chocolate brought by
the one and only Tom de Leonias. By far the best hot chocolate and best way to
start a s240.

After some riding/hiking we get to camp with Dustin already sent up with his
tent. Food was shared, a pound of chocolate was eatten. I made fried tilapia.
Food made us happy.

Breakfest was met by clouds and coffee made INVERTED aeropress. Which wad
amazing. The ride back was mellow and no body died. Good times.

Pictures proved that everyone had a horrible time.

Re: [RBW] Re: Mini-Beam

2014-03-09 Thread ted
I have old suntour superbe track cranks (similar to the kind the IRD is
patterned on) on my Simple One with a 44t ring. Best I can measure the
chain-line is 41 or 42mm. There is a lot of clearance at the chainstay. I
think I had a 48 mounted briefly when I first built up the bike. If you
like I can try my bigger rings and see if I can come up with an upper limit.

I do think its odd that a gear 1/5 inch taller felt easier from a
standstill. I recall being told that small ring/cog combinations spin
better than large combinations giving essentially the same gear, so
sprinters would pick the small ones and pursuiters would go with the big
ones. Never believed it though. Anyway if you obsess over gears (color me
guilty) you may well find you care about the ~1.5 inch change that comes
with a single tooth difference in rings. If you are given to tinkering
you'r likely to end up with a bag or box full of rings and cogs.

The IRD crank should take most any 144 BCD ring. Although the smallest ring
that will fit is 42, 144 BCD rings are not that hard to come by. For
example Ben's stocks the Sugino 75 (a bit pricey but very nice) in every
tooth count from 44 through 51. That BCD being the traditional track size
and no longer common on road bikes you need to know if you are getting 1/8
or 3/32 width when buying rings. If you get a 1/8 ring you will need 1/8
chain.

The weather cooperated yesterday at 53 degrees and I was able to get out
on the Sam for my 10 mile loop but this time I kept it in either the 36/14
combination (66.9) or the 46/18 (66.4) for the trip.

IRD recommends a 110mm BB to achieve 42mm
chainline, but I wonder about the 46t ring clearance of the chainstay. The
46t ring and 18t freewheel would duplicate the setup noted earlier.

Though perhaps not as pretty the MKS urban pedals are a more affordable
option for something sort of similar to the White Industries ones, and of
course there are also the GR9 and gR10.
Strictly speaking the 46-18 on your Sam is not going to be a 69 gear
because the roll out on those 650b wheels isn't going to be 27*pi. But it
should be a very good simulation of what you would experience on the QB
since its also 650B. The only diff would come from the size of the tires
 you use.
Good luck with the weather this weekend.

The White Industries product line seems top notch with great reviews,

While you are at it their urban pedals are very cool too, and if you

[RBW] Fenders for the 650b Big Ben tire

2014-03-09 Thread Meade Anderson
Has anybody tried these tires yet...? (looks like Rivendell is sold out
of them)

I've got a set waiting for the mounting but am unsure if my current set of
Honjo's will cover the tire or even fit...has anybody tired the Some Rain
Dog Fenders at 60mm wide? How about with the Bens?

Thanks

[RBW] Re: rear rack mounting question

2014-03-09 Thread dougP
Dave:

I've been able to resolve the same problem when changing from cantis to
V-brakes on my Atlantis by moving the left side seat stay strut to the
inboard side of the eyelet. The lack of symmetry does not seem to bother
anything.

 Hey now,

rack to the lower set of eyelets on the rear dropout?

Looks like you guys squeezed the last bit of daylight and the some out of

Ended up with a big group 8 by my count.
 3 were newbies.
 4 had blue jeans on.
 1 came but didn't sleep
 3 ladies.
 1 offspring of younger years.

Meant to leave at 4. Ended up leaving 530ish due to hot chocolate brought
by the one and only Tom de Leonias. By far the best hot chocolate and best
 way to start a s240.

After some riding/hiking we get to camp with Dustin already sent up with
his tent. Food was shared, a pound of chocolate was eatten. I made fried
 tilapia. Food made us happy.

Breakfest was met by clouds and coffee made INVERTED aeropress. Which wad
amazing. The ride back was mellow and no body died. Good times.

Pictures proved that everyone had a horrible time.

[RBW] Re: rear rack mounting question

2014-03-09 Thread Dave
Thanks Doug. I tried that out as well, but still no room. The silver brakes
have better reach than the Paul's, otherwise I'd just swap back.

Wish my tinkering didn't always lead to more tinkering!

Re: [RBW] rear rack mounting question

2014-03-09 Thread Eric Norris
How about adding a spacer at both ends to move the strut a little
outboard--just enough to clear the brake? You should be able to find alloy or
stainless spacers at your local hardware store. You'll also need some M5 bolts
long enough to accommodate the length of the spacer.

[RBW] Brifters on a country bike

2014-03-09 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
You might want to get a different bar to go with your brifters. The older style
drop bars like the Nitto noodle, etc, have broad front bends that can interfere
with braking since the shift levers are between the brake lever and the bar.
Not saying you can't do it with a noodle, just that it will be less than ideal.
Civia makes a drop bar that has a lot of good comfort points and a sharper
front bend that works better with brifters.

[RBW] Brifters on a country bike

2014-03-09 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Your Deore derailleur should work ok with 8/9/10sp Shimano STI. You'll of
course need to match the cassette and chain to the rear shifter.

I wouldn't hold out much hope that the front shifter/derailleur will work with
any of the cranks that Riv usually sells. If you have, say, 10sp, you should
have a front derailleur and crank that are made for 10sp.
