Re: [RBW] Re: Speaking of Off-Pavent Rides... Come to Redlands this Spring!

2014-03-16 Thread cyclotourist
Thank you Doug, and thank you to everyone that was able to make it out for
this. Doug, Curtis, Esteban, Evan, Aaron, Ian, Paul, Rob, Mike... what a
fantastic showing.

Between 130 and 150 riders showed up. The most diverse group of bikes on
any ride I've been on. Full basket and Alba-fied Rivs, MCRBS, high-end CX
bikes, old Schwinns, dual suspension MTBs... just everything. And the
riders were the most amazing part! Smiles all about from what I saw. Final
group came in @ 6:30... 10 1/2 hours to finish! They told us they came out
to Just Ride, and that's what they did!

See some of the photos to get an idea of it here:
http://www.flickr.com/groups/redlands-strada-rossa/pool/

We plan on having it again next Spring, and hope there will be another
solid Rivendell Riders contingent!

I also love the idea of the organized rides/brevets/populairs that are
happening like the D2R2 in Vermont, and La Ruta Loca in the Bay Area.

So I think to myself: Why not combine the two? Which gives us this:
 http://redlands-strada-rossa.blogspot.com/

Some locals and I are trying to put on an organized ride, that shows
the best of Inland Southern California in the Spring, and keeps people
on as much dirt as possible. The rest is majority back/rural roads.
Many of the SoCal rides have been on parts of this route, but this
links the segments together in an amazing loop that comes out at just
 about 100km.

A decent amount of climbing to keep folks honest, but there are no
chest-bursters. Some singletrack as well. Not terrible technical, but
1km section of climbing that may cause some walking. Not a biggie.

The vibe aimed for his an extended Riv-Ride. There are no timing
devices, no podium spots, no t-shirts, just the knowledge that it'll
be good people on a good route.

And it's free! Not a money-maker, either for for profit or charity.
Just a good ride! I am trying to arrange a post-ride meal and party
hosted by the Redlands Bike BBQ http://www.bikebbq.com/ that will be a
donations-only set up. They're good people and I'd like to help them
out, but again, that's not the point of the ride.

So long/short: The ride is on March 15th, 2014. Weather should be
great. I hope many of you can make it here for this. Cheap/clean/safe
hotels in town. Quaint historic downtown to walk around and lots of
Victorian, Arts Crafts, MCM homes to look at for significant others
that may not be into the whole 100km bike ride thing.

Oh, and two independent breweries in town as well. Just thought I'd
 mention that!

Re: [RBW] Re: Tires make a difference?

2014-03-16 Thread Tim Gavin
Yup. Studded tires increase your rolling resistance by a couple orders of
magnitude. Of course, they'd be *point*less if they didn't.

I swapped out my Nokian W160s back to the ITS DJ Micro Knobbies on my
Schwinn KOM, and now it's like I'm going downhill. Nice riding 26 tire at $18
apiece http://www.jensonusa.com/Intense-Tires-Micro-Knobby-26-DJ-Tire,
and they have cool tread. I'd recommend them as a commute tire if they had
any puncture protection at all.

On icy pavement, how do the A10s ride? I'm satisfied with the W160s, and
assume the A10's ride similarly. I'm keeping an eye out for A10s on
clearance for my Riv and my gf's 51 San Marcos.

The difference in riding effort/speed is astonishing. I describe the
difference between the Nokians and the Pari Motos as three gears (on a wide
range cluster). I met up with pal Kurt for the last 10 miles of his epic
January 200km ride, and I exhausted myself trying to keep up with him. Two
weeks earlier, on Pari Motos on a 200km brevet, I flew away from him on the
 first climb.

The Fatty Rumpkins are in between, but far aback of the Pari Motos. I
tried to mount the Fatty Rumpkins for commuting last week (surely winter
must be over) and gave up after an hour of trying to get them to mount
straight. The Pari Motos went back on. Event tires, I guess, but commuting
 is an event, too.

[RBW] Re: Grant on tires

2014-03-16 Thread Matt Lynch
I primarily commute an average of 150 miles a week year round in the
Pacific Northwest. On cold winter mornings at 5:00 AM the last thing I
want is a flat. At first I was disappointed with the Schwalbe Supremes
because I had four flats in the first couple thousand miles. Than, after
reading several threads about lower tire pressures I decided to
experiment. I stopped pumping them up to 80 psi and started pumping them
up to only 50-60 psi. Sometimes I went as low as 40 psi. I haven't had a
flat in 4,000+ miles! (knock-on-wood) and ride quality has improved.

I would like to try a livelier tire though. Taking the advice on this
thread into consideration, I will probably talk myself into a set of winter
and summer tires. And maybe I will do just that :)

I know a route that is flatish, on a bike trail for most of it.
But it requires a creek crossing and carrying your bike up some stairs.
Maybe a walk up a hill. But it ends with an awesome rope swing!

Here's the route. Short and sweet.

http://goo.gl/maps/2oo4Y

Grant has a route he does before/after work. I vaguely know what that is.
Equally short with some climbs, walking and mellow single tracks.

Vague route:

Either is good. The Warhorse looks good btw. Excited to see you ride it.

Subject: [RBW] Re: Grant on tires

I think tires can make a big difference, and could easily bridge that gap
between good and great.

I put Marathon Supremes on a bike, after running 700x60 Big Apples, and the
Marathons felt doggier. Plus I was measurably slower against my friends, and up
timed climbs. I just switched them for 29x2.1 Vee Rubber mini-knobbies, and
they are much faster, both in feel and empirically.
Tubeless setups, same bike, same rims, same gearing, different performance. The
only other change was wider bars, but I don't climb out of the saddle on a
geared bike on the pavement.

I would love to try Supermoto tires, and I'd put the BAs back on a bike, but
I'm unlikely to ever use those Marathons again. They really did make me
disappointed in the bike I'd bought.

Big Apples on frame 1: reasonably fast with the lunchtime roadies. Single
Marathon Supreme on the back, noticeably slower. Frame 2 with both tires
Marathon Supremes, rear tubeless: slower yet. The Marathons did well in the
dirt, though, which was unexpected. Frame 2 with Vee Rubber knobbies, both
tubeless: superfun, way faster. I was now towing or dropping riders who had
been towing me. 20 seconds faster up the 1 mile climb than my previous fastest,
which was set on my Quickbeam, 84 gear, C-lines.

I would just like to point something out, for the sake of the archive. While
this is a positive thread with all participants having a fun discussion about

[RBW] Tires in the Goldilocks zone (was Grant on tires)

2014-03-16 Thread JL
I bet Riv will stock the new Soma Grand Randonneur tires. I could see the brown
sidewall enforced model being a big hit with them. They look like they could be
a road slick cousin to the FFFR. I think that tire in particular seems like a
gateway into either more supple tire options, or more stout tire options,
depending.

[RBW] New Bombadil build

2014-03-16 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
I finally polished up my new, and a little unusual, single speed Bombadil
build, which rides on Ghisallo wooden rims and Hetres. Here's the build list:

56 cm Bomba f/f in a sort of blue/green
Peter Weigle-modified Campy front hub, White DOS Eno rear hub
Ghisallo beechwod rims
Cream Hetres
Stronglight 49D crank arms
Bespoke Chainrings Solida Cats 44 tooth chainring
Phil Wood pedals
Nitto Lugged seatpost
Brooks B-17 Select
Nitto Bullmoose bars
Brooks Plump grips
Paul Canti Levers
Bruce Gordon cantis, with cork pads installed to accommodate the wooden rims

Here's a glam shot: http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/13194350253/

And for those interested in some of the details, here's a link to the full set:
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/sets/72157637736975573/

And here's the kicker, and a sorry confirmation of my addiction to tinkering:
This is probably a temporary build - I'm pretty sure this frame is heading to
Bilenky in a month or two for an SS retrofit and respray, in which case most
of the components of this build will move over to my Wilbury.

Quick ride report on the inaugural ride to follow.

Re: [RBW] Re: Tires in the Goldilocks zone (was Grant on tires)

2014-03-16 Thread Jason Leach
I don't think they will stock the GR is a way to have a better tire. From a
retail perspective it makes sense to try new things, rotate stock, and
offer additional products to compliment existing ones. Rivendell has an
existing business relationship with Soma. To my knowledge RBW has never
sold Gran Bois or Compass tires but they have sold Pari Motos and Soma
650b, in addition to their own 650bx33mm tires. There is precedence to them
stocking a road tire in 650b. It ill be interesting to see what effect
having a mostly roads tire with the same general dimensions and the GB
Hetre will have on the tire preferences of their customers. It has been my
observation that there are a few big reservations to trying more supple
tires (this is patterned on the assumption that RBW customers {in total,
not just the subset that read this group} hold a preference toward strong
tires). My assertion is that the strong GR tire could nudge new people
into trying a very supply tire - one that they may very well like. It may
also move people in the direction of more robust tires options if they
currently prefer the other end of the spectrum. I would imagine that
having a second wheelset equipped with the new Soma GR strong version
would be keen for a bike equipped with Hetres (or Compass Babyshoe Pass)
and fenders.

*I don't mean to infer that supple tires are not strong, some brands are in
fact very well constructed and last for many miles. I opted for the word
strong because it allowed for a positive description of tires with a
reinforced sidewall, all black construction, and thick tread with puncture
prevention considerations.

[RBW] Museum ride and errandonnee

2014-03-16 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
The temperature reached 60 degrees yesterday, and even I couldn't make
weather-based excuses not to ride. So with the new Bombadil single-speed build
completed the day before, I decided to combine some errands with a little
culture injection.

Delaware has a lot of really wonderful museums within easy biking distance of
my house. I decided to set off for a couple of historical sites along the
Brandywine Creek - Breck's Mill, a historic district centered around a
beautiful stone mill with bell tower built along the Brandywine Creek in 1816,
and Hagley Museum, which preserves the original DuPont family gunpowder mill
(the foundation for today's DuPont Company). As I rode the Bombadil on its
inaugural ride down the long hill from my house to the Brandywine, I noticed a
distinctive and pleasant (but also a little alarming) smell of wood smoke - the
result of forgetting that this is the first bike I've ridden with no means of
braking except the bike's caliper brakes on its wooden rims, and consequently
applying the brakes on the long downhill the same way I would on alloy rims. I
quickly adjusted to harder applications in shorter bursts, which solved the
problem. However, at the bottom of the hill, I also learned that my habit of
keeping the brakes applied after I stop (I don't know where that habit comes
from, and I wasn't aware of it until yesterday's episode) is not a good one
when riding a bike with caliper brakes on wood rims - because when I released
the brakes and tried to start up again, I discovered that the cork pads had
gently bonded with the varnish on the wooden rims. Easily released, and lesson
learned. With those two adjustments in my braking habits, the new Bombadil
performed very well - it's a lovely frame for a single speed. Although I will
say that the beautiful wooden rims make the speed abatement process, even with
cork pads installed in the Bruce Gordon cantis, a bit more of an adventure than
I'm used to!

First stop, Breck's Mill, and a quick lunch in bright sunshine alongside the
merry rapids by the mill. Pics here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/13194294113/in/photostream/ and here:
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/13194420044/in/photostream/ .

From there I headed farther upstream along the Brandywine to Hagley, a
wonderful museum of America's early Industrial Revolution. Here's a pic of
the beautiful entrance (notice the cannonballs on top of the entrance column,
reflecting the primary use of the company's gunpowder product):
http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/13194384194/in/photostream/

And then back up the long hill (the Bomba with its Bullmoose bars makes a very
comfortable single speed climber) to Greenville for a stop at the hardware
store for light bulbs, and a coffee at the local spot:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/13197664963/ and
http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/13174822263/

A great first ride!

[RBW] Re: Museum ride and errandonnee

2014-03-16 Thread Deacon Patrick
What a great wandering! I keep my brakes on once stopped too, I think to
keep the bike from rolling (not an issue on flats, but those are foreign in
these parts. Grin.). That's my excuse.

Like you, I was drawn outside today by our sunny and 40˚F spring warmth.
Biked to the trail head (a very steep, rocky unridable trail) and did my
first barefoot run. It was wonderful muddy, snowy, icy sloppy fun!

With abandon,
Patrick

The temperature reached 60 degrees yesterday, and even I couldn’t make
weather-based excuses not to ride. So with the new Bombadil single-speed
build completed the day before, I decided to combine some errands with a
 little culture injection.

Delaware has a lot of really wonderful museums within easy biking distance
of my house. I decided to set off for a couple of historical sites along
the Brandywine Creek – Breck’s Mill, a historic district centered around a
beautiful stone mill with bell tower built along the Brandywine Creek in
1816, and Hagley Museum, which preserves the original DuPont family
gunpowder mill (the foundation for today’s DuPont Company). As I rode the
Bombadil on its inaugural ride down the long hill from my house to the
Brandywine, I noticed a distinctive and pleasant (but also a little
alarming) smell of wood smoke – the result of forgetting that this is the
first bike I’ve ridden with no means of braking except the bike’s caliper
brakes on its wooden rims, and consequently applying the brakes on the long
downhill the same way I would on alloy rims. I quickly adjusted to harder
applications in shorter bursts, which solved the problem. However, at the
bottom of the hill, I also learned that my habit of keeping the brakes
applied after I stop (I don’t know where that habit comes from, and I
wasn’t aware of it until yesterday’s episode) is not a good one when riding
a bike with caliper brakes on wood rims – because when I released the
brakes and tried to start up again, I discovered that the cork pads had
gently bonded with the varnish on the wooden rims. Easily released, and
lesson learned. With those two adjustments in my braking habits, the new
Bombadil performed very well – it’s a lovely frame for a single speed.
Although I will say that the beautiful wooden rims make the speed abatement
process, even with cork pads installed in the Bruce Gordon cantis, a bit
more of an adventure than I’m used to!

First stop, Breck’s Mill, and a quick lunch in bright sunshine alongside
the merry rapids by the mill. Pics here:

 here:
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/13194420044/in/photostream/ .

From there I headed farther upstream along the Brandywine to Hagley, a
wonderful museum of America’s early Industrial Revolution. Here’s a pic of
the beautiful entrance (notice the cannonballs on top of the entrance
column, reflecting the primary use of the company’s gunpowder product):
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/13194384194/in/photostream/

And then back up the long hill (the Bomba with its Bullmoose bars makes a
very comfortable single speed climber) to Greenville for a stop at the
hardware store for light bulbs, and a coffee at the local spot:
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/13197664963/ and

 A great first ride!

2014-03-16 Thread Tim Gavin
That bike looks fantastic. And those wheels will look glorious on a
Wilbury, too. What color is the Wilbury?

Are you having the whole bike re-sprayed a new color, or just retouching
the installation scars from the frame couplers?

I was wondering if the third tube on the frame would be new ground for
Bilenky, but they've put SS couplers on many a triple tube tandem, and
probably even more off-beat frames.

[RBW] Bay Area Ramble Report

2014-03-16 Thread Chris Chen
I had a few days down here so I hopped on my trusty California Steed (made
in Taiwan) and went for an overnight at Pan Toll Ranger Station on Mount
Tam,

But not before taking the BART out to Walnut Creek to visit the bike nerds
at HQ and BBH. BART's been fixing up track on the weekends so I was faced
with a long wait at Lafayette; I took the opportunity to do some suburban
riding (and a neat little rough stuff detour) for the 4 miles between
Lafayette Walnut Creek.

My excuse was to test ride something with Albastaches: for whatever
reason, while the Albas on my Homer aren't bad, there is an element
missing, and I'm not sure I want ol' AHH to be so sedate. Joe put me on a
Hillborne with Albastaches and I took it for the fastest test ride ever
(two laps around Rivendell Muffler and Body HQ).

I purchased two water bottles for $6/piece which I intend to sell on Ebay
so I can retire to my private island.

I actually swung past BBH before going to HQ. Will poured me a cup of fresh
coffee (DELICIOUS), and I had too much fun with the meshwork of bells
suspended from the ceiling with monkey's fist pull cords.

And my Cousin dropped by HQ for the fastest hello ever. I was all about
speed at that moment.

Verdict from the fastest test ride ever: I think I'll give 'em a shot: I
found the position at the fore (or in the crotch) of the bars to be really
secure, reminding me of what I'd been missing from the ramp/hoods on
Noodles. The swept back portion REALLY comes back and that's what was
missing (or at least thought I was missing) when I was on tour last year.

Okay enough bike store fun; I got out of Contra Costa County as fast as I
could and met up with my friend David at the Ferry Building in San
Francisco. It turns out there's a St. Patrick's Day Parade happening and
the city was filled with drunk party people. THIS MADE FOR INTERESTING
RIDING. We rode very gingerly through very packed streets and parks.

The ride across the bridge, through Sausalito and Mill Valley was pretty
uneventful if not REALLY REALLY CROWDED. I mean come on it's a tourist
attraction.

Climbing out of Mill Valley to Panoramic Highway was pretty fantastic.
Getting up that ridge up past the Alpine Hut and into the State Park was
pretty good too. There's definitely a lot of spandex traffic along that
stretch. I loved how development was nearly impossible to spot once
entering the park.

We made it to Pan Toll ranger station and campground where the only site
open was the Hiker Biker site (YES) so for $5 we had ourselves an excellent
encampment.

It's definitely high season for bike camping down here, with sunset
happening late enough to get a good meal in before the darkness settled in.
I made a gamble and said f--- it, I'm in California as I put away the
rain fly and flipped the bird to the fog drip gods.

After 2 or 3am the wind died down to nothing and it was so quiet and lovely.

I got up before 7am and hopped on my steed for the 4 mi climb up to East
Peak and the observatory. So breathtaking!

Re: [RBW] Re: Tires in the Goldilocks zone (was Grant on tires)

2014-03-16 Thread Eric Platt
Well, glad to know there are some others out there that aren't overly
pleased with the Marathon Supreme. Have used both the 700x40 and the
26x50 versions. In both sets found the ride to be slow. LIke they are
sticking to the ground. Have always written it off as my excess weight.
Might have to slightly re-think this. But it still is partly due to the
weight, no doubt.

Looking in the garage, it's obvious my go-to tires are more heavy duty.
Mondials, Dureme, and Baby Bens. Want to try some others, but as my
neighbors point out, my garage already looks like a bike shop. Need to
wear out a few sets first. Then again, the new Barlow Pass might be an
excellent fit on the Hillborne.

I don't think they will stock the GR is a way to have a better tire. From
a retail perspective it makes sense to try new things, rotate stock, and
offer additional products to compliment existing ones.

*I don't mean to infer that supple tires are not strong, some brands are
in fact very well constructed and last for many miles. I opted for the
word strong because it allowed for a positive description of tires with a
reinforced sidewall, all black construction, and thick tread with puncture
 prevention considerations.

Re: [RBW] Grant on tires

2014-03-16 Thread Patrick Moore
Late to the party but I'll play. I just bought a used, lower middle class
mountain bike (DB Outlook, 7 speed Shimano megarange fw) for my daughter.
One reason for the choice (beside fit and feel -- she liked it) were the
wide tires with mildish knobs. I took advantage of her ignorance to have
the tires undergo Stevie's patented Stickem witha Knife (tm) thorn
proofing (Thornproof tubes, Slime, liner, yuck, yuck, yuck) -- well, better
that she ride a concrete tire than get flats.

Anyway, I got the bike home to make a few adjustments, one of which was to
reduce tire pressure from what felt to my educated thumb to be about 120
psi. It was funny: Let out a lot of air (I ride such tires at 30 or lower);
felt hard. Let out more; felt hard. Let out MORE; felt hard. Finally, as
the stream of air was fizzling out, I was able to indent the tires with a
massive squeeze. I suppose you could remove all the air and still have
enough bulk inside to provide adequate tire lift.

If she takes to cycling more than she has done in the last year, I'll
upgrade to some better wheels and tires and tubes and sealant, but these
are indubitably, no matter what else they are, thorn PROOF.

Re: [RBW] Re: Grant on tires

2014-03-16 Thread Patrick Moore
+1 for the Kojaks, at least the 559X32s. They aren't proof against thorns,
but they do pretty well for the way they roll.

The Big Apples (I used 3 pairs of the 60s) were as close as anything to
thorn PROOF without special tubes or sealant, yet they rolled pretty damn'
good for all their bulk.

OTOH, no flats at all for almost 700 miles on the Stan's-ified Parigi
Roubaix or in some 50 miles (so far, on goathead dirt) the almost-as-light,
Stan's-ified and tubeless Schwalbe Furious Freds.

I have to say that Schwalbe does make some very nice tires.

I fully understand that some people ride in conditions where flat
protection is more important than other considerations. With Schwalbe that
protection comes with a big loss of riding pleasure.

Of the Schwlabes I've ridden, the Kojaks provide the best combination of
smooth ride and flat protection. Even the Kojak does not come close to the
 Grand Bois Extra Leger.

Re: [RBW] Grant on tires

2014-03-16 Thread Z
Peter,

If you're looking for better flat protection w/Hetres, try squirting an
ounce or two of Stan's sealant into your tubes. You'll need tubes that
have removable valve cores (like Q-tubes). I used to patch a flat after
even the shortest jaunt around town, but since Patrick Moore showed me the
way, I just flick the goatheads off of my Hetres or Quasi-motos and keep
riding.

Sorry if this is old news...

 suit their riding predilections.

I have not been in the Bay Area since 1981 and have never been to the
Seattle area, so I don’t know what the road conditions are like. If the
Bay Area roads are anything like the atrocious minefields that Minneapolis
and St. Paul have become over the past 10-15 years and especially after
this winter, stout tires are probably a good idea. The Twin Cities have
both cut way back on road maintenance and repairs, going to a
complaint-based rather than a proactive model (basically they have to get a
certain number of phone calls about a pothole or other road problem before
they go out to fix it). I’d probably shred a Grand Bois in one ride around
 here nowadays.

Re: [RBW] Re: rear rack mounting question

2014-03-16 Thread Dave
After a few different attempts, one of which would of worked but just
looked ugly, I switched back to the paul center-pulls and eeked out just
enough reach on them for the rear brake. Rack mounts just fine without the
Silver brakes in the way.

The bullmoose bosco (proto)bleriot is so much fun with this setup.
Definitely makes me feel like a kid, which I think means that someone at
RBW gets their wings ;)

Re: [RBW] Re: rear rack mounting question

2014-03-16 Thread Michael

I don't know your specific load carrying needs, but you could ditch the rack
and just use a saddlebag. Some Carradices and the RBW bags are huge.

I stopped using a rear rack when I got my Carradice bag, which was bigger than
any rack mounted bag I could find, so I didn't need a rack anymore.
