Based on the ride pic, the bike is set up perfect for that area!
Great that you tinkered and found a set up that does a turnaround on your
feelings for the bike.

[RBW] Re: Rambouillet conundrum

2014-04-06 Thread Jeff Ong
OK, you guys talked me into trying a different set of tires before I boot
this frameset to the curb. I did tour on the Paselas (on an old Trek 520)
and found them both amazingly flat-resistant and super boring to ride, so
I'm willing to buy that they could be making the Ram handle like a Trek
Navigator.

I've been planning on trying either a Compass or Grand Bois tire, but I'm
nervous about flatting way too often. I am already the most flat-prone guy
I know (riding 23s doesn't help, of course), and I've heard mixed things
about these tires. I do know how much difference a decent tire can make,
though.

Thanks for all the thorough and thoughtful responses -- really great
feedback. I appreciate it.

[RBW] Sam Hillborne Frame Fitment Update

2014-04-06 Thread Avery Wilson
So I took some advice from you guys on this list and decided to tinker with
the Sam Hillborne over the weekend.. and ride as well!

I took off the Albatross bars, along with their 10cm Tallux Stem and
swapped in a pair of 46cm Noodles that I already had built up as a complete
cockpit with a DirtDrop stem. Took it out for a ride on Saturday, just 5
or 6 miles, and had just loved it. First time I'd felt good on drops. Ever.

I didn't want to get too excited, so I took it for a much longer ride today
- 30-35 miles perhaps, broken up into two parts, before and after church.
The bike is completely transformed! I just felt faster, quicker, more in
control.. it was great. How does a bike feel more responsive at the pedals
based on cockpit alone?

So I know that the DirtDrop stem seems real short, and it looks a little
funny, but I've come to realize that I have the PBH (88) of a man 6' or
taller. Trouble is, I'm only 5'10", so those inches had to come from my
torso. So, my tall seatpost and short dirtdrop stemmed Noodle cockpit just
seem to work really well for me. If I get tired of the slightly weird look
of the dirtdrop, and want to rewrap the bars sometime, I'll get a 7cm
Tallux. Or something. Or just be happy :)

Also I inflated the Resist Nomad 700x45c tires up to 50psi rear 40psi
front, and that make the bike feel quite a bit quicker. They were at 40/30
previously. Now I'm awaiting my 700x38 Barlow Pass tires to show up from
Compass sometime this week and hopefully take the feel from the tires to
the next level.. :)

I think the ills I felt toward my bike earlier this week are fading away..
cockpit swap, and next a tire swap will do it!

Link to photo below of current setup.

Current Bike Setup

Here's a picture from the ride today, with fellow list member and new Riv
A. Homer Hilsen owner Michael Fleischmann!

I still find it amazing that these bikes are at home on singletrack, dirt,
and gravel as much as they are on a smooth road. Love it.

OH, hell yeah. What about the front? Can it be positioned to provide

Re: [RBW] What's involved switching to road levers?

2014-04-06 Thread Patrick Moore
Patrick to Patrick: this sort of swap is very easy, particularly if you use
non-aero levers. The hardest part if ensuring that the housing is the right
length. I don't like over-long housing, and almost always end up cutting
mine too short -- and having to cut another length.

Measure twice, make a mistake, and measure a 3d time -- that's the ticket.

Hey, if you learned your brake work with the rod brakes on cheap Indian
roadsters, cable and housing is easy.

Re: [RBW] Re: What's involved switching to road levers?

2014-04-06 Thread Chris Chen
So if I were me (which I am!) I'd keep cable housing with each set of bars,
so all I'd need to do to swap over would be to re-run the brake and shift
cables. If I left enough cable at the end, I could switch a few times
before replacing cable.

However, I'm kind of a worrywort so I replace my cables more often than
probably required.

[RBW] Re: 55 Cheviot and 700c

2014-04-06 Thread jandrews_nyc
That's correct
I have parts already .
And I was thinking that with a 55, my wife and I could share the
bikewith a quick-release seatpost clamp.
I could do either a 55 or a 60 and probably the 60 would be more
ideal...plus I have the original budget 700c wheels from Riv when I bought
the S.H.
Seems crazy not to just buy another wheelset ...but was thinking of how to
do this within a budget.

 you'd

the absolute wheel-and-tire diameter will be pretty close to the 650B's.

Re: [RBW] What's involved switching to road levers?

2014-04-06 Thread Chris Chen
Yeah, the cables afaik are the same diameter so you can reuse your brake
housing if it's long enough, and if you're using non-aero road levers you
might have enough. The road cable end looks like a bullet, whereas the
mountain cable end looks like a lollipop.

As long as you have enough slack at the bars. I can't tell you over the

of cable at the bars. before I learned to leave some slack, even if it's

Or if you are throwing together a budget build kit from stuff on hand to

[RBW] Re: Not diggin' 650b ~ Why do I prefer my 26" Atlantis?

2014-04-06 Thread ted
The tires don't stink, though they may not be the sort of tires you like.
Apparently some folks like uber stout bomb proof tires, and some others
prefer the lightest supplest tires they can find. Unless I missed it you
have not said what tires you use on your Atlantis.

I have a bike with 650b GB cypres (32mm) tires, and another with Jack Brown
green (33mm) tires. As best I can tell their characteristics are fairly
similar though the JB looks more balloonish than the Cypres. That may be
because I have the JBs on narrower rims.
Compared to the Maxy Fasties, the Niftys have thicker tread, reinforced
sidewalls, and a kevlar belt. That sounds like the difference between the
green and blue Jack Browns. Riv recommends "the BLUE for for trails,
commuting, tandems, or just all-around riding if you aren't
weight-obsessed", and the green is "the one we recommend fore pure road
riding".
If you find the Niftys slow, likely someone will suggest you should have
bought the Maxy Fasties.

Re: [RBW] Re: Not diggin' 650b ~ Why do I prefer my 26" Atlantis?

2014-04-06 Thread ted
Please remember there is a lot more going on with a bike than just the
wheel size. For example smaller wheeled bikes tend to have less bottom
bracket drop. Comparing the 650b and 700c hillsens, the drop differs by
13mm. The difference in bsd between the two wheel sizes is 38mm, so the
radius differs by 19. Subtracting off the drop leaves a difference of only
0.6cm. As frame sizes go a delta of about 1/2 a cm is fairly trivial. I
suppose if you are right in the middle of two sizes it might matter but
really it doesn't seem picking wheel size to affect stand over makes sense.
How does a 54cm 650b bike equate to a 50cm 700c bike on standover?

Also air volume is only indirectly related to a plush ride. The primary
driver is tire pressure. Once a tire is big enough to avoid pinch flatting
and rim damage at pressures low enough to give the comfort one wants, I
don't see how going even bigger makes the ride plusher. In fact for a given
tire pressure, a wider tire feels harder.

[RBW] Re: Not diggin' 650b ~ Why do I prefer my 26" Atlantis?

2014-04-06 Thread Eric
Don't get me wrong, beautiful bike. But I think it might be my tire
selection.

The first few were lumpy & sluggish, the other was a little too balloon-ish
for my taste.

So why does Riv even sell these tires if they stink!?

Anyways, I have a pair of Niftys on order and hopefully they'll change my
opinion. Those Gran Bois looks nice too so we'll see.

Thanks for everyone's help!

Re: [RBW] 33.3 vs 35 (Jack Brown vs Paselas)

2014-04-06 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
I tried JB's (Green - haven't ridden the Blues) when they first came out -
back when the Paselas tended to be slightly undersized for the stated
dimension. The difference seemed noticeable, but probably was not free
from observer bias. I had a hard time convincing myself to put the Paselas
back on just so I could wear them out. Which I eventually did, but they
didn't seem to roll as well. The JB profile was definitely more to my
liking, while the narrower/taller profile of the Pasela (I was running
32's) was something I could feel when cornering. The 35's looked rounder
to me, but I believe still use a similar casing.

The only downside to the JB's which I can say is that I tend to knock
chunks out of them when going over sharp rocks on the trail. But, that is
not a condition unique to the JB's.

Still my favorite tire.

Re: [RBW] Re: Not diggin' 650b ~ Why do I prefer my 26" Atlantis?

2014-04-06 Thread bruce.herbitter
Funny how for a while, the posts all seemed to lament the passing of Ram/Rom
and lately we hear from the Ram/Rom “haters”. Similarly now 650B size. The
selling points for me on 650B were 2 fold. First, the larger volume of air in
the tire gives a plusher ride, especially over coarse surfaces. I find they
also grip well in corners. Using stiff tires or high pressures negates that
advantage. Second, the lower axle height of a 650B lets me straddle a larger
frame. 50 CM in 700 size wheels became 54 in 650B. I prefer the larger frame
size, particularly when riding in drops (as into a headwind). I think they
look great too.

I switched to an SA Titanico a couple months ago and love how comfortable it is
while installed level to the ground. It also has a little more useful real
estate; you can sit on the nose or the rear rivets when the situation arises
and still be comphy. I ride Albas at saddle height or slightly higher.
