[RBW] Re: 62 Rambouilet on ebay

2014-04-11 Thread Joel Moore
Bought it, essentially at asking. Enjoying it very much so far (am new to
decent bicycles). It was fixed up by an Oakland artist who also does
rebuilds of classic steel frames. See www.brazenbicycles.com for some
nice-looking examples of his work.

[RBW] "Enjoy"

2014-04-11 Thread Chris Chen
A lot has been written about differing personalities and philosophies,
sometimes it's about trail or tube thickness, sometimes it's about
suppleness, or what have you, but I was doing some drivetrain cleaning and
I was wondering about the whole greasing square taper vs dry fitting, and
of course I was searching the Internet, where I came across this post from
Jan:

http://janheine.wordpress.com/2012/04/16/to-grease-or-not-to-grease/

But the point of the matter isn't the technical debate between greasing or
not greasing (for the record I put a tiny bit of grease on the taper, like
I was applying ointment), but one of the last phrases in the post:

<<...put them back on, and enjoy them some more.>>

I was struck by the poetry of this statement. I guess that's the point of
this whole exercise. We enjoy our bicycles; They give us joy. The joy of
movement and flying, the joy of conquering a climb, the joy of a quiet
vista with no one in sight. And the joy of riding with cherished friends.

So anyway, while I'm waiting the next two hours for the boeshield to dry on
my chain, I'd to wish everyone joy.

...and enjoy them some more.

Cheers

Please don't be put off by the fact that it is new. I am not trying to
make a fortune. It looks like it is $164 on Amazon with free shipping:

and where they claim a list price of $210.

How about $115 and I pay shipping?

The best way I've found to describe it is my Hunqapillar is more
Hunqapillar now. It truly is amazing how much difference bars and saddle
make. Wow.

I never did figure out who we need to TP for the whole bar width issue, but
I've added the guy or gal who decided the brake cable will block the brake
lever attachment screw. Fortunately, I got lucky and got things right the
first time with set up. Grin.

Your LBS with a White Industries account can get you a 20, 21, or 22

 That

That's not the way I'd get there. I'd shift my rear der two clicks and not
touch the front. If I'm riding in my 44/15 (2.9) and I'm saying to myself
"this gear is too high", I'll shift one click to the 44/17 (2.6). If
that's still too high, then I shift one more click to the 44/19 (2.3).

Tink

I think you possibly could. Since the trials freewheel has a different
design with 72 points of engagement, I don't know if that makes the
pawl-assembly different and incompatible. Give them a call, and they will
tell you precisely if and how you can do it.

Uh oh! One little pebble errantly kicked down the mountainside -- what will

I'm about 10 hours of riding into my Rivet Independence saddle and love it!
It feels fantastic with the more aggressive posture, and with the 1 year
guarantee, there is nothing to lose for trying it (or their try before you
buy with $25 down using a used saddle). Made the choice to try Rivet first
an easy one for me, and I won't need to try another.

Thanks to Deacon Patrick, I have a B68 on my city bike, now freeing up a
B17 for the Redwood, which got me thinking that I'd like to try something
new, which then led to going through saddle dimensions on the Brooks

I'd like to try a Brooks Team Pro and was wondering if this wonderful group

And if anyone had a used one lying about that wanted to wander over my way.
Thanks in advance,

Re: [RBW] Re: 26" Tire Suggestions?

2014-04-11 Thread Montclair BobbyB
I love Schwalbes, but they're pricey. If you like slicks, Kojaks are
awesome. I have em and really like em... I do miss having some bit of
tread (like the Big Apples).

My favorite cheapo tire is the Grand Tycoon brick tread (they run closer to
2.2 in), but they're supple, grippy, they last, and THEY'RE CHEAP!!! And
they come in a variety of colors. Duro also makes a clone of the Grand
Tycoon (which incidentally itself is a clone of the Schwinn Westwind brick
tread tire from the "Typhoon" era)... Keeping that Schwinn golden era
spirit alive... gotta love it.

Re: [RBW] Re: 26" Tire Suggestions?

2014-04-11 Thread Tim Gavin
I love the Compass tires on my other bikes, but I haven't tried the 26 x
1.75" ones. I wish they were 2" or bigger.

For now, I really like the ride of these cheap tires on my Schwinn KOM, ITS
DJ Mk2, only $18 a
tire.
They're fluffy and have a nice, micro-knob tread. Pretty light and fast,
good on hard dirt, gravel, and road. But, they have no puncture
protection. I've had no punctures yet in commuting, but maybe I'm lucky.
No thorns around here, just broken glass in the gutters.

[RBW] Re: 26" Tire Suggestions?

2014-04-11 Thread Aaron Young
Michael,

Congratulations on finding a Valley Runner! I have one too set up with
albatross bars and Big Bens. I love riding it.

Here's a photo with Big Bens mounted - sorry its not a close up.

https://flic.kr/p/j747TN

My vote is for the Big Bens. They are 2.15" but a really great tire; good
on the road and great on gravel/fire trails and not insane single track
(haven't done much of that though, to be honest). I haven't tried putting
fenders on there yet, but it looks like there is plenty of room still. I
haven't tried other tires so can't comment on the offerings from Compass or
Schwalbe.

Enjoy your Valley Runner! Hope to see some pics when you get done building
it up. :)

I went from a 120mm stem on drops to a 70mm Technomic on moustache. The
drop-bar stretch was becoming too much for this old bar-leaner, but I think
the 50mm difference is just right. Moustache on their own have a notably
longer reach than drops

I meant to add that it's possible you would prefer a less aggressive bar
for your style of riding. Perhaps an albastache or albatross or bosco? I'm
glad I didn't go with the moustache bar due to the extra with and less drop
of the albastache.

2014-04-11 Thread Deacon Patrick
Ray, personal preference is understandable. On the off chance that it's
you're set-up, have you tried them higher/closer via a shorter stem or dirt
drop stem? I'm no expert, having just ridden 5 miles so far on my
albastaches, but I noticed a big difference in a cm bar height, getting
them up to saddle height for me (I under-estimated my initial height on
purpose to find where I like it best. For all I know, they may eventually
go a wee bit higher yet.

With abandon,
