[RBW] Re: Carradice Duxback Poncho - Opinions?

2014-05-30 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
I have the whole Rivendell outfit: yellow poncho with yellow fisherman's
hat. Even with fenders with long flaps, I still need rain pants/shoe covers
(Showers Pass is good) if I want to be entirely dry at speed (ca. 15 mph).
If I'm willing to slow down to jogging speed and there isn't much wind,
then pants/covers aren't really necessary. Mist and splashes from other
traffic can still be an issue though.

It's funny you likened poncho as a well-ventilated tent because that's what
my coworkers and fellow bike commuters like to call mine - flying yellow
tent.

[RBW] Re: WTB: your old beat-up components

2014-05-30 Thread Christopher Murray
Howdy,

I recently saved a late 80's Trek from the landfill. I forget the model but
very middle of the range. The frame is not rideable due to someone putting a
large screw through the waterbottle mount and straight through the downtube.
You are welcome to any of the components on the bike for free. If you are
interested let me know and I can give you more details. I also have a good
condition shimano 105 octalink double crankset with about 1000 miles on it. The
rings are off the arms but everything is in the same bag. You are welcome to
that as well- 53/39. Might have the BB too.

I totally understand not wanting to ruin the components that are on the frame
but also second the idea that you should seriously consider riding it and
enjoying it. I would ask myself what I was saving the parts for and if I didn't
have a good answer then I would wonder if I would ever use them. Saving them
for another bike/ project seems like a not terrible idea. Saving them because
they seem precious seems like a waste.

Cheers!
Chris

Yes, indeed and no offense meant, of course. People like me who live in

You all have me intrigued by these tires of Jan's.I looked at the details

Whoops... of course the fork mounted stop wouldn't work with racers...
duh. But I still advocate using a 1" mounted to your steerer within your
headset stack, if there's room.

[RBW] Re: Anyone using Paul Funky Monkey with Nitto Quill?

2014-05-30 Thread Father of Sam
Here's a vote for the fork-crown mounted Tektro cable housing stop.
Mine's with a Nitto mini front rack. Works like a dream. The 7/8", as
already confirmed, mounts directly to the stem (quill or bullmoose), the 1"
around the steerer of which that quill stem or bullmoose slides into,
within the stack of your headset, and 11/8" around steerer beneath your
'ahead' clamp on stem, of which you would never find on the RBW site. I
personally dislike the idea of mounting the cable stop directly to the stem
(as pictured above). This way prohibits ease of raising or lowering the
stem (which is a profound benefit of the quill or bullmoose, as RBW
espouses) with ease, as you would then need to reposition the housing
stop. When mounted within the headset stack, or on the fork crown, you can
raise (or drop) your stem (and bars), with no effect on your brake setup,
to your hearts desire...
Photo (if I succeeded in attaching it) is of my front brake cable housing
stop and rack set up (with a P&S rack tang). It currently has the post of
a Nitto mini holding it in place (and I'll see if I can find a photo... or
maybe I'll just take one...)

[RBW] Re: WTB: your old beat-up components

2014-05-30 Thread Deacon Patrick
Chris,

I have Albatross cro-mo bars and Nitto Tallux Stem - 25.4mm - 12cm. Both
used for two years on my Hunqapillar. There were a few drops on the trail,
but I'd be perfectly happy riding them from a safety perspective. $137 new.
How's $110 including shipping sound?

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] Re: ISO 58cm Atlantis - Got one?

2014-05-30 Thread Hugh Smitham
Mark,

I saw that thread. Personally, I know how difficult selling a bike can be.
I'm of the opinion that you just get the bike you want. Case in point, I
purchased my 2003 Atlantis August 2013 from Seattle Craigslist. I've
completely refurbished it over 9 months. It was in fact a longer project
than I figured. Fortunately I had Homer to ride.

2014-05-30 Thread Mark Reimer
A 58cm Atlantis was just up on eBay, located in Canada, for 1,600 CAD with
a chris king headset. It had a small ding in the downtube though.

I bought a used 58cm about 3-4 weeks ago off Craigslist from a gentleman in
Colorado, and the ad had been sitting for a few weeks when I contacted him.
So they do come up from time to time, but definitely not often.

If the waiting time is the only issue, it has also been suggested here that
one could order an Atlantis, and find a Surly LHT to use while you wait, as
they are very similar. Not ideal, but gets you on the road...

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivet Saddle Experience

2014-05-30 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
As a disclosure, I am a friend of Deb Banks, the owner of Rivet, but I have
three Rivet saddles and am a huge fan of all of them. I have ridden 600ks
with two of them with minimal butt problems. This year's 600k was done
with only two rides over 2 hours in length this year (a 300k and a 400k),
so it's not as if my butt is acclimated to long riding!

The wider Pearl saddle that I have is much more comfortable than the Brook
Swift I had, which is too narrow for the more upright brevet riding that I
have been doing.

Have fun!
Toshi

Well, Ron, the used Independence is heading back to Rivet Cycle Works, so
you might get a deal on it if it's still around and you are fine with a

On the QB it's a Phil hub. I run 40/16 as my high, 32/19 as my low.
Eventually will have a 22t for a bailout gear.

Re: [RBW] Carradice Duxback Poncho - Opinions?

2014-05-30 Thread Patrick Moore
Our rain comes mostly in the summer, and when I used my Duxback to commute
15-16 miles 1-way it was too hot. The Carradice nylon poncho wasn't as hot,
but it was (at least, the model I had) was too tight to work well with drop
bars. I went back to the cheap ($20) Campmor, which is both broad and light
and works well enough in the wind. The Campmor also dries much faster than
the Duxback.

Yes, you will get wet from the knees down in a downpour, and from the
shoulders up if you don't have a hat, but shoulder to knee you stay dry --
again, even in a downpour driven by high wind.

[RBW] Re: Carradice Duxback Poncho - Opinions?

2014-05-30 Thread Mathew Greiner
Almost but not entirely off topic: There's an entirely entertaining
documentary called "Bill Cunningham New York" about a fashion photographer
for the NY Times who rides his bike around the city every day all week
taking pictures of people on the street. He has done so for 40–50 years. He
spends a few minutes talking about how to make a poncho from a trash bag
and tape, saying, "You can buy these, but they get holes, too, and then you
patch those with tape, so it all ends up looking the same, anyway."
Different strokes, you know?

My first Brooks was a B17, and it was great, until I started going on
longer rides - anything north of 30 - 40 miles would be problematic for my
thighs and hip joints. I switched to the B17N and found nirvana. The B17N
eliminated any thigh and hip discomfort, and otherwise felt just as
comfortable as the B17 for my sit bones. I think the width of the saddle is
more important to pay attention to, however, to accommodate comfort for
your sit bones - if your anatomy needs the width across the back of the
saddle, but you otherwise have thigh rub, I'd say you should look at lacing
the flaps or cutting and lacing the flaps, instead of just going with a
narrower saddle.

All that being said, I've recently moved to the Brooks Cambium C17, which
is slightly wider than the B17N, but still narrower that the B17, and it's
been feeling pretty great.

[RBW] WTB: your old beat-up components

2014-05-30 Thread Christopher Miller Rosales
Hey All!

I picked up a beautiful 1985 Specialized Sequoia with pristine Suntour
Superbe/Cyclone components. The bike is an absolute joy to ride and I'm
making it my every day bike, but I feel guilty using these super high
polish parts on a commuter. I've decided to box most of the original
components and put on a more utilitarian group.

Please let me know if you have any of the following in your parts box!

Quill stem 120 - 130mm, 25.4
Crankset - single or double road, matching front derailleur
Nitto Albatross or similar upright bar
Short Pull Levers
Thumb shifters - friction/7/8 speed
Commuter wheelset, 700c 130mm cassette

I'm looking for quality, but ugly components - like old beat-up XT. Thank
you all for the help on building my new bike, message me if you have
anything. I can't wait to make this my budget commuter Rivendell! Will post
pics when done.

Best,

Chris

Re: [RBW] Re: Father-Son GAP Trip

2014-05-30 Thread ascpgh
Tony- I really like that part of the trail as well and am fortunate that it
is the most accessible to my location. Love riding from home to Ohiopyle
for an overnight, dinner at one of the restaurants, pancakes in the morning
at the corner market with that bridge framed by the windows. Lots of the
river guides will catch a warm meal there to start their day on the river
having walked down the mountain from their tent village...they're usually
the ones reading interesting books while their order is being cooked.
Always surprises me how from so far and away those folks come for the
summer work. Adds to the experience.

The railroad now operates on the other side of the Youghiogheny River so
engineers continue to have those views of rock walls and straight poplars.
Ohiopyle was a mill town powered by that waterfall in front of town.
Visitors center by the trail has some great pictures from back in the those
days.

Your most excellent pictures and narrative have me all wound up for another
trip, and my orange Rambouillet, while in design is a bit more specialized
than a Saluki, has been a great ride to cover those miles and see those
sights.
