Well, I finally swooped up a quickbeam frame in my size and I need some parts
to set it up. This is going to be a cummuter/ camper bike so cosmetics
willncome second to function.

Wanted: Albatross bars, brooks B17 champ, nitto mini front rack, 120/100
wheelset... Im sure I'll have a round two of wanted.

For trade: Hammered Honjo fenders 700x43, nitto12, velo orange rando rack, 1pr
fatty rumpkins.

Any takers, please reply offlist.

BTW the quickbeam looks amazing. More on that in another thread.

Thanks

Now, I know that having a single-sided pannier isn't what the cool kids
do; but I like my single Ortlieb Office Bag for general commuting (laptop,
clothes, files, plus, plus) and I like my single Ortlieb Front Roller for
fast commuting (laptop and some files only). I have no need for a
left-right set of panniers and in fact split my Ortlieb Front Roller set
 with a like-minded friend.

So what has this got to do with the HAR or low-riders in general? Simply
put, any pannier that's carried single-sided on a front low-rider setup
will result in unreasonable degraded steering. This unreasonable
degradation does not happen with rear-mounted single-sided pannier.

So be forewarned! If you like them low-riders and want to get them, know
that you need to balance them left-right or your neck will be sore from
trying to man-handle the handlebar straight. And don't even think about
 riding no-hands.

Looks like an awesome adventure. Makes me want to go for S24O.
Yes, the dirty Atlantis looks very cool!

I think that the front rack you have is designed to be mounted on the lower
eyelet of the front fork-end.
They are designed for 700C bikes, and most 700C bikes have only one eyelet
for each front fork-end.
I have a same rack, and I first mounted it on higher eyelet like you do,
and then moved it to lower eyelet.
It looked like a small change, but I could handle the bike lot better.

Over a wet, dreary, mosquito infested weekend, I went on a quick s24o
 shakedown ride on the atlantis.

For those with a keen eye, you might recognize this ride. It is the same
ride I went on in the last issue of Bunyan Velo, however it was -25C and
 covered in snow then.

 Overall comments about the ride:
 - The Atlantis is a fantastic bike for trail riding. It transitioned
seamlessly from pavement, to gravel, to wet mud and rootish trails. There
was nothing I couldn't ride over with confidence. I was particularly
impressed with how it handled the single track, given its inclination to
 ride in a straight line.
 - The Bruce Gordon tires without fenders ruled the day. Manitoba has very
sticky gumbo mud. I had ample clearance with the tires and was able to ride
everything. One guy had 38's and fenders and was constantly stopping to
clean his jammed fenders out. I'll still put fenders on, but for wet
 conditions, this was great.
 - Indexed 10 spd barcons wrapped under the tape is working perfectly,
 thankfully.
 - White Industries VBC plays nicely with 10-speed, contrary to reported
experiences from others, so that's nice.
 - Holy moly is this ever a heavy bike hah! Not complaining, just
observing. When I jumped on my cross bike the next day I felt like I was on
a rocket ship. An uncomfortable rocket ship.
 - The Atlantis looks definitively more awesome the dirtier it gets.

I uploaded a number of photos to Flickr (with a new Nikon Df, a riv-ish
Dslr if there ever was one), feel free to check 'em out.

First off is the project of my wifes bane since it sits in the room
next to my side of the bed. Raleigh International road frame set. 1973.
Capella Lugs. 160mm head tube. 120mm rear spacing. 56.5cm c-c top tube.
 59cm c-t and 58cm c-c seat tube. Campagnolo dropouts. Reynolds 531 tubing.
27.2mm seat post. Truly a beautiful frameset. All threads are 100%
functional and English of course. Shows some sign of usage. There are 2
small dings that can be seen in the pictures. Pictures shows a tiny ding
in-between the a and t in international and there is another small one
 on
the top of the TT. Again, they are tiny but they are there. FS $275
OBO shipped continental US. Here is the list of other items.

Nitto Tallux-12cm some signs of usage $45 shipped

Carradice Pendle-Like New, no usage to speak of, it was lost in the
mail for months! Patch included but not Irish strap--$90

Paul Neo Retro in black, Kool stop pads not included, I have some
standard tektros I will put on, just the brakes $90 for the pair or $50
 per
wheel to cover shipping. OBO if I am high here.

 Quickbeam wheelset-Suzue quick-release
hubs, 32 spokes. The rims are Araya with ferrules. Rear is threaded
 for freewheel
on both sides. They are still in the box they were shipped to me in
for a project that didn't pan out so no pictures but were bought from
fellow lister who I trust, no tires-$150 Shipped.

Nitto Bosco Bullmoose Bars, great shape come with cork non-barend
grips and shimano shifter levers installed. I took them out of the box but
never mounted, they again for another project that didn't happen, I see a
trend. Selling for what I paid $120 OBO.

And finally I have had these for a bit but no project in the near
future. Hot pink set of Jagwire ripcord Pro full set of brake and shifter
cables/wires. New in box, I want to see these on a bike here on the list,
 I
think they would really set off an 80s MTB build. $40 shipped.

I have these and a few more things on my flikr stream, if any of these
offers seem out of line I am bit flexible but I think I priced it to sell.
Again all items are paypal, shipping included but only to lower 48.
 Thanks!

Also, if anyone is interested in a 1986 23cm Bianchi Grizzly in rare
metallic purple all original, came to me one owner ridden very little. Was
gonna do a whole upgrade but its so original with the bullmoose bars, and
nice suntour mountech shifters and thumbies that shift nice. Huge
motorcycle grips bake it look boss! I am gonna pass this project as well
 on
to someone else. I paid 150, gave it a tune up and some new Michelin city
tires with protek, rides nice. Looking for $160 just to make up some of
 the
cost of the tires, the ones it came with were dry rotted. This is only for
local pickup in the NYS tristate area. Thanks again.

 https://www.flickr.com/photos/67889635@N06/?deleted=14459851903

First off is the project of my wifes bane since it sits in the room
next to my side of the bed. Raleigh International road frame set. 1973.
Capella Lugs. 160mm head tube. 120mm rear spacing. 56.5cm c-c top tube.
 59cm c-t and 58cm c-c seat tube. Campagnolo dropouts. Reynolds 531
 tubing.

I took them out of the box
 but
never mounted, they again for another project that didn't happen, I see a
trend. Selling for what I paid $120 OBO.

And finally I have had these for a bit but no project in the near
future. Hot pink set of Jagwire ripcord Pro full set of brake and shifter
cables/wires. New in box, I want to see these on a bike here on the
 list, I
think they would really set off an 80s MTB build. $40 shipped.

I have these and a few more things on my flikr stream, if any of
these offers seem out of line I am bit flexible but I think I priced it
 to
sell.

This is only
 for
local pickup in the NYS tristate area. Thanks again.

 Peter

Re: [RBW] Re: Pics of your Riv with a wild animal...

2014-06-17 Thread Jim Bronson
I saw a bobcat while riding my Rivendell last week in the country about 8
miles east of my house, but it quickly scurried into the shadows before I
could get my phone out to take a picture. I was probably too far away
anyway to get any sort of detail with a smartphone camera. Nevertheless,
it was pretty neat to see.

I saw a similar but smaller bobcat about a year ago on the same road about
1.5-2 miles away from the spot I saw one at last week. If it's the same
cat, he or she is doing well, good to see. There is a pond in the general
area so I'm sure it's a fairly rich feeding area for the cat and any other
non-domestic cats in the area.

[RBW] Wildflower Ramble!

2014-06-17 Thread Deacon Patrick
My first big ride since I broke my rib in mid-May. Felt good, though I felt it
on the longer climbs at the end of the ride.

Underbiked with Barlow Pass tires -- as in the lower end of under biking. Next
time I'll swap to MSO's for better traction on this steep loose stuff. Barlows
are great, but not for roads that are loose gravel, slope steeply sideways, and
are steep climbs or descents.

Single speeding for 7 hours is fantastic! I returned well tuckered.

Wildflowers are in full swing and showing off all their glory. Plenty of rain
of late so they are green and brilliant and abundant in the Haymen burn area
where they make one big rolling meadow over hill and dale amidst the tombstone
trees. No idea how far this ride is, as I only measure by time.

 https://www.flickr.com/photos/67889635@N06/?deleted=14459851903

First off is the project of my wifes bane since it sits in the room
next to my side of the bed. Raleigh International road frame set. 1973.
Capella Lugs. 160mm head tube. 120mm rear spacing. 56.5cm c-c top tube.
 59cm c-t and 58cm c-c seat tube. Campagnolo dropouts. Reynolds 531
 tubing.
27.2mm seat post. Truly a beautiful frameset. All threads are 100%
functional and English of course. Shows some sign of usage. There are 2
small dings that can be seen in the pictures. Pictures shows a tiny ding
in-between the a and t in international and there is another small
 one on
the top of the TT.

I took them out of the box
 but
never mounted, they again for another project that didn't happen, I see
 a
trend. Selling for what I paid $120 OBO.

And finally I have had these for a bit but no project in the near
future. Hot pink set of Jagwire ripcord Pro full set of brake and
 shifter
cables/wires. New in box, I want to see these on a bike here on the
 list, I
think they would really set off an 80s MTB build. $40 shipped.

I have these and a few more things on my flikr stream, if any of
these offers seem out of line I am bit flexible but I think I priced it
 to
sell. Again all items are paypal, shipping included but only to lower
 48.
 Thanks!

Also, if anyone is interested in a 1986 23cm Bianchi Grizzly in rare
metallic purple all original, came to me one owner ridden very little.
 Was
gonna do a whole upgrade but its so original with the bullmoose bars,
 and
nice suntour mountech shifters and thumbies that shift nice. Huge
motorcycle grips bake it look boss! I am gonna pass this project as
 well on
to someone else. I paid 150, gave it a tune up and some new Michelin
 city
tires with protek, rides nice. Looking for $160 just to make up some of
 the
cost of the tires, the ones it came with were dry rotted. This is only
 for
local pickup in the NYS tristate area. Thanks again.

Most mountain rears handle 32+, and most mountain fronts handle triples.

It's not to say that you can't find a road RD that will comfortably shift
to 32, or use a road double FD to shift a triple (I've been doing so for 10
years).

It's just the difference between Try it and see and This will definitely

Michael, they are VO's Sabot. They are great pedals. I've VP Vice on my
Hunqapillar. With the extra pressure of single speed, my bare feet were
getting sore. I may get a bit more milage with the Sabots before my feet
are tender enough they need my shoes on, but I would but them as equal to
the VP Vice in all other aspects. Both are excellent pedals.

Even up to the current generation, Shimano road rear derailleurs is not
speed-specific. So Shimano 105 5701 derailleur, which is part of the
company's 10-speed group, can be used for 8-, or 9-speed drivetrain also. I
have a 5703 derailleur on my bike and it's spec'ed to accommodate 32T large
cog and 39T for capacity. It's also lighter than a Deore LX derailleur.

[RBW] Re: 8-speed Bleriot build question. MTB or Road derailers?

2014-06-17 Thread dougP
Derailers intended for MTB have longer cages to accommodate wider gearing
and are designed to track the angle of a cogset with at least a 30 tooth
big cog. Road derailers are usually rated to 28 or fewer teeth but this
can often be cheated by a few teeth. The cage will likely be shorter since
overall gearing is not as wide.

The reality is there is enough variability in stuff that surprising
combinations of components may work just fine. Don't worry about locating
an 8 speed specific derailer. One marked 9 speed will also work, and
probably some 7 speeds as well.

Your selection should take into account your maximum cog size. If you're
max cog is 30+, life will be easier with MTB stuff. Certainly as you get
up to 34 and 36 tooth cogs, a road RD could be problematic (although I've
seen a short cage Ultegra shift an 11-34 9 speed). If I were buying stuff,
I'd go with the MTB parts for versatility. If I had something in the parts
bin, I'd try it first.

[RBW] Re: 8-speed Bleriot build question. MTB or Road derailers?

2014-06-17 Thread Michael
Very interesting info. And specific info. Just what I was wondering.

I like a 12-32t, 28-36-46 setup. I live in rolling terrain that gets hilly the
further west I go. The granny gear makes me confident that I'll never have to
turn down a ride for lack of gearing.

I forgot to mention that I am thinking of doing it as a friction shifting
build, which opens me up to any derailer that can handle a 32T rear cog.
So I guess a Shimano CX70 up front, and that Shimano rear derailer mentioned
above would work.

I wonder how much weight savings they would be over Deore stuff. Not that it
would matter, but no use adding more weight to drag up hills onto the bike.

Of course, losing 25 lbs off the engine should be more of a concern in matters
like this!!
