Hello, I have a VO City/Gentlemen semi-custom frame/fork - this one was built in 2008 by Ahren Roger, a predecessor of the VO polyvant city bike frame. It has only partially been built up, and never ridden. It was designed to handle 650B up to 42mm tires (Hetres do fine), with 52mm fenders (without any bending), has downtube brazons, can take front and rear derailleur, has low trail fork. The frame has seat and chainstay lugs, otherwise filet brazed, lugged fork, fender eyelet/ braze-ons, wire/light braze-ons on front fork, 2 water bottle braze-ons. Comes with VO 1 threaded headset installed. Seat Tube CTC - 53cm Tope Tube CTC - 54cm Wheelbase 104cm Semi Horizontal dropouts, 135mm rear dropout spacing. Seat/seatpost in pic not included. I originally paid about $1400 for this. Asking $275 for local pickup in Seattle. Will consider shipping if no local buyer found. [RBW] Re: in Portland for a few days; ride and coffee
Hey Franklyn, From SE Springwater corridor is a very lovely ride. You can get on that pretty much anywhere on the east side riverfront, ride south and then east – the whole thing is car-free minus a few crossings and mild mannered. If you feel like a bit more, get off at the Powell Butte trailhead and ride some trails. The trails are mostly pretty smooth, with some gravel at the top. Should be very doable on pretty much any Rivish bike (I ride them on my Roadeo all the time). [RBW] Re: Tuning Brake Squeal
Dear RCW, I don't like brake squeal. I don't like it so much that I never focus on what the pitch is. I'm too busy not liking it. Of course I can't carry a tune in a bucket, and mostly don't hear out of my left ear (need surgery but resist out of general life long cowardice and allergy to pain), so maybe I wouldn't know if my brakes were squealing high D or low E. When my brakes do squeal it is almost always caused by grime on the rims. Assuming your brakes are properly installed, I would clean the rims and pads. Since all sound is caused by vibration I would assume that a slight variation in the hardness of the pad. smoothness of the rim, or angle of contact could produce different sounds. I teach meditation and am especially fond of the sound of silence, which the chronically inaccurate King James Bible translates rather beautifully as the still small voice of god. Re: [RBW] Tuning Brake Squeal
I have found that, upon aligning new pads as best I can, if there still is some squeal then an application of water (splash from garden hose), or riding in the rain somehow makes the squeal immediately go away, and stay away even after everything dries out. Maybe the water helps the pads break in quick or something. I use Yokozuna red all weather pads that RBW sells but this also worked with Kool Stops too if I remember. I don't toe in. I just center the brake and use a third hand to hold the calipers/pads flat onto the rim so I can align pads vertically square on the rim and then tighten them down. Sometimes I get minimal squeal out of one set, sometimes I get no squeal at all. I shoot for no squeal, but found that water works if all else fails. BTW, I have also had pads set up by LBS and they sometimes squeal. They tell me that they'll break in. So I guess some squeal is acceptable on new pad alignment, even for the pros. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Tuning Brake Squeal
I've used canti's for along time and never experienced a squeal I could not remedy until I started using Kool Stop Salmon pads , the smooth posted Eagle 2. As a last resort, I shortened them, cutting off the tail end(where the second channel is, use that a guide and cut right there). The Eagles have an internal aluminum frame covered by the pad, but it does not go into the tail, so you can cut it off . A quick file to smooth the cut where it meets the metal frame, reinstall, and no more squeal ! I never had any squeal with Kool Stop Eagle 2 black, or with the canti's I had that used shorter road sized pads . *Your touring Paul Canti brake pads are cutable *, the Shimano I know not the exact model of brake so I cannot say. *You'd cut right where the last, 3rd channel is on those particular pads. * As far as I'm concerned though, there is zero benefit to having long mtb pads. None. The brakes with the cut pads work just as well. So my only suggestion then, if the pads are toed in and all properly installed, is to either use another compound or cut the pads or replace them with road sized, if you can. There are certain models of brakes I will never buy, and those are the ones that come with the mtb slimline cartridge salmon pads because you cannot cut them or replace the pad holder with a road one. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Tuning Brake Squeal
I perhaps should have mentioned that I don't mind the squeal and that both bikes are stopping just fine. Mark Abele installed the Pauls just 4 months ago, and IMO he's the bomb as far as brake set-ups go. I am more struck, mostly as a musician, that the pitch is so different. I might wonder if a different sized rim does function like say a string on a violin, as per doug's comment, and the tires might function to increase amplitude at certain frequencies like the body of a violin (32 pasela) compared to a cello (55 big ben). Mostly I am having fun. Will have to listen closely to see if we have four tones together between all four wheels! Seems that there aren't, which would point to rims as the key variable in pitch? I hope Sheriff Lesnick is listening in on this thread because he might actually know what causes a given pitch. xxoo rcw -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Tuning Brake Squeal
The Kool Stop Dura Cartridge holders (for caliper brakes) when new are completely self-aligning - they come from the package with a concave shape that automatically aligns toe and flatness (if you follow the directions). It's because of the nifty spherical washer and ball socket which Grant even bows to in his Yokozuna catalog listing. These have never made a squeak for me once broken in added a whole new dimension in stopping power. On Tuesday, July 29, 2014 4:25:55 PM UTC-5, Liesl wrote: I perhaps should have mentioned that I don't mind the squeal and that both bikes are stopping just fine. [RBW] Re: Recommend all silver triple FD for Bleriot build please.
If you want a genuine 28.6mm clamp on silver FD, go vintage from ebay . Check for Suntour or Shimano 28.6 FD's. I've found that even most doubles can shift triples just fine though , FWIW. The ones with a nice long cage :) Like : many SunTour's and Shimano's and even Campy's . But really, if you want a newy new just use a the braze-on and the adapter as there is no other choice for newy new. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Recommend all silver triple FD for Bleriot build please.
Whatever you do, don't use a Sora triple. On my triple-shifting Rivendells, more than one Soras of mine have broken, in exactly the same place - the part of the derailleur body that has a little arm that is supposed to anchor the spring. The appendage broke off, leaving no possibility for spring tension. Once would have been a fluke. Twice means inappropriate part for the job.
