Re: [RBW] Re: Coldest Ride on a Rivendell Ever?
I salute you for riding in such cold. Have ridden in the teens to about -20F. As it was 30+ years ago, didn't have the correct gear for it. Re: [RBW] Re: Coldest Ride on a Rivendell Ever?
I haven't had it get cold enough since I got my Sorel's to know for sure (only got down to -10˚F I think), but I find them more constricting (less wide) and far less flexible than a mukluk, both of which contribute greatly to warmth. Plus, they do not ventilate well, which the mukluks do. So warmer all round to go mukluk over Sorel, if you aren't caught in the freeze/thaw cycle. Grin. Re: [RBW] Wow, I mean, just wow
I agree the early Stumpies made awful mountain bikes (at least by today's standards)... But considering Specialized was trying to dial in the right trail geometry without having any market feedback, they started getting it right within a few short years (the 85 geometry was already a big improvement). And the silver lining: the early Stumpies made better all-rounders, and what they may have lacked in pure technical (trail) agility they more than make up in pure style. An old Stumpy with a set of Big Apples and a Brooks saddle is 100% badass. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Poor man's Quickbeam?
For what it's worth, I was considering the Handsome Devil at one time and it was a nice bike with all the braze-ons needed for both racks and fenders. Their single speed is the Fredward. That comes with fenders but I'm not sure if has the braze-ons for racks. The Devil rides nicely and I liked the geometry better than I liked my old Cross Check. Both appeared to handle up to 40s without fenders and only 35s with fenders. Overall, I liked the bike for the money but wanted a Hillborne. It has forward facing dropouts so single-speeding it will be simple and you'll end up with chainstays in the 44cm range. All-in-all, it has almost the same geometry as a 1984 Bridgestone RB-T and similar geometry to a Rivendell Legolas. The only thing I'm not sure about is rear rack compatibility because I have zero experience with those and don't even know what braze-ons are needed. [RBW] Re: question for those who ride with a White Industries double crank
You can even try removing the crank and re-seating it (with grease) without rotating. That happened to me with a new Rene Herse crankset, but simply re-seating it on the spindle fixed it. If it doesn't fix it, try noting the phase of the lateral out-of-round. i.e., where along the 360 degree path is the crank arm when the chainring is the farthest out. Then remove and reinstall 180 degrees out of phase. Is the farthest out point of the out-of-round still in the same place relative to the crank arm? Or is it now 180 out of phase? If the former, then likely the chainring is bent, and the crank arm is installed perfectly straight. If the latter, the BB is bent. Anton, who is frequently out of phase with things. That means it is really hard to trim the front der. and not get any buzzing from the chain scrapping against it. It has to be *JUST* right to not contact. Now I have some single speed White rings and they are all dead straight. So I'm curious... could it be the cheapo BB I have (It wasn't even 10 bucks. bought it to test the spindle length and decided to ride it till it died. Re: [RBW] Wow, I mean, just wow
In my experience, the later ones -- early '90s, when they were still steel -- are among the best mountain bikes ever; far better IMO than the very early ones, which for all their looks handled (to my taste) like pigs. Re: [RBW] Wow, I mean, just wow
I remember those days. In '91, I test-rode Stumpjumpers and Rockhoppers. Geometry not as good as the Bridgestones for me. I loved that long Bridgestone TT. (I ended up buying the '91 MB-4, my first big bike purchase. That bike's still going strong today.) The Diamond Backs of those days felt great too, similar to the Bridgestones for me. Slowly steering this back on-topic, there sure was a lot offun development of mountain bike geometry between the original Stumpjumpers and the early 90's. It makes those original Stumpjumpers curious specimens. So desirable in some ways, but maybe too archaic to be fun for a lot of people to ride now? -Original Message- From: Patrick MooreSent: Jan 8, 2015 6:42 PM To: rbw-owners-bunch Subject: Re: [RBW] Wow, I mean, just wow In my experience, the later ones -- early '90s, when they were still steel-- are among the best mountain bikes ever; far better IMO than the veryearly ones, which for all their looks handled (to my taste) like pigs. [RBW] Re: What's your winter project?
OK, this might be the weirdest winter project I've ever taken on, but I did put in some serious design work today, and the concept is actually taking shape. This Winter project is that I am going to build my own desmodromic rear derailer. What the heck is that? A desmodromic mechanism is something that is actively driven in all directions. The most well known desmodromic mechanism, and what you'll see if you Google the word desmodromic , is Ducati valves. A rotating cam throws the valve open and another rotating cam throws it closed. There is no return spring. It's driven open and closed. Some classic old French derailers had a loop of cable that, like a push-me-pull-you, would drag the derailer to the left and to the right. The parallelogram had no return spring. Much more recently, White Industries made a desmodromic shifting system, called the LMDS (Linear Motion Derailer System). Look it up, it's pretty swank. So, what I've got scoped out, is that I'm going to take my favorite stock rear derailer (RD-M760-GS low normal), remove the spring, and set it up for a secondary cable. The actuating mechanism of our modern derailers is a parallelogram with a pretty complex geometry. Those of us used to friction shifting with lots of gears can attest to the fact that the derailer responds differently at different places in the sweep of the shifter. For me the incredibly sensitive spot is dropping from the biggest cog on the cassette to the next one. You just touch the shifter and it moves. It's super sensitive. I did all the measurements and calculations and now the data tells me why. The geometry of the parallelogram demands it. So, I need a shifter with a profile that isn't round. It needs to be a profile that complements the geometry of the parallelogram of my derailer. Let's say you want to move the shifter 120 degrees to sweep all the way from cog 1 to cog 9. Then, ideally, you want every one of those 8 steps to be exactly 15 degrees of movement. With the right shifter profile, that's no problem, if you can do the math, then do the design, and then have a manufacturing method that can produce one of them. This is where 3D printing comes in. The really complex math exercise that gets you to the shifter profile that pulls the RD-M760-GS in *this *direction gets repeated once you figure out where to put a secondary cable to pull the derailer in *that *direction. Those profiles need to also have the property that they counterbalance each other so you never get even a bit of slack in the cable, allowing you to actuate both cables with one shiftlever. Push me pull you. That's why White Industries made the LMDS on sliders. They at least made the derailer motion linear, and the cable motion linear, so the math wouldn't be so GNARLY. Me, I don't plan on building a derailer, and I don't mind the math. Today I worked out the GNARLY math and have both cam profiles. I now need to strong arm my brother in law to translate my numbers into a solidworks model. Once that's done, it's trivial to 3D print this weird cammish shifter, and try to hook up a DIY desmodromic rear shifting system. The real key compnent is to modify an existing shifter design that has adjustable and equal friction in both directions and fits into a really small space. I'm going to base my design on this Cheapo Simplex model. French AND Cheapo http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/380734533172?lpid=82chn=ps If I can emulate that plastic inner shifter piece, but implement my optimal cam profile, and figure out a cable fixing mechanism to prevent slipping at the shifter, then getting it 3D printed is practically free. Why do it? Well, Jan goes on and on how much the rest of the world wastes energy pushing against a spring to shift in this direction and having nothing to do with the shift in that direction because only the spring is doing it. I just wanted to see what it is he's fussing about. I don't want to buy a 1930s Singer or Herse for $15000, and I don't want to build a totally custom $2 bike like Jan did, but I do want to explore. I don't even want to spend the $400 it takes to buy a WI LMDS on Ebay. I was riding with my dad, who's face had begun to blister and turn white from frostbite. We were out for 5 hours. Later in the week, I was in the emergency room for a minor cut and met two people who had turned their hands completely black from exposure on that day, after being outside less than 10 minutes each. All these suggestions are great. I'd jump on the listed QB and the S3X wheel, myself. At that target price, my first thought was also, The poor man's Quickbeam is a Quickbeam! You could also buy my 56cm old-style Riv road fr/f/hs/bb. 56 is the new 54 in the Shire. It's been through Hell but I imagine that to be a good mark of a survivor. It spent about 10 years as my fixed gear commuter: fenders, 28c Randonnuers, rack eyelets, nice. It finished the legendary Paris-Brest-Druex in 2007 (as well as all the brevets) with no scratches and no flats but it did incur a weld-separation-incident the night before the start. French Jah-Bey Weld, a steel hose clamp, and leather toe strap solved that little annoyance. Fixed properly back in the USA! USA! USA! by a metal arts teacher/cyclist. Oh, I could go on for awhile about it's moods, likes and dislikes, and even re-live that fixed gear singletrack stuff on Mt. Tam but I won't. Oh yeah, frame is unpainted except for the original silver on the Riv fork. Plenty of pics available. $750 pick-up in Bay Area or $800 shipped to lower 48. LUGS. I looked up the Geo of the '89 Koga and the head angle is supposed to be 72°. Rake is 46mm. Any idea what the head angle of the early Stumpjumpers was? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Hi Mark, Another data point: I've got VBC double on my Hunqapillar, and it's also pretty darn straight. BTW: love the cold-weather pix! The large ring doesn't seem to be dead straight/flat. If I look down at the chain ring while I am pedalling, I can see it moving from side to side in between the front derailleur. Turns out it's quite tough!), or do White rings have a certain amount of flutter? It's about 3mm of total side-to-side movement I'd say. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to a topic in the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] 2015 Redlands Strada Rossa
The powers that be just finalized the dates and times for this spring's RSR: March 21st! Up to date info on the official RSR blog: http://redlands-strada-rossa.blogspot.com/ This event is directly inspired from the great social RBW-Google Group rides we have been doing here in SoCal. I wanted to expand upon those, and try to morph those with something similar to the D2R2 http://www.franklinlandtrust.org/d2r2 which just looks like an amazing event. The RSR is the result, and you are all cordially invited to come over and enjoy the festivities! It's a 100km mixed-terrain ride in Inland SoCal. This year we are going to add a 50km half-metric route as well. Both routes are very doable if you're used to riding that particular distance. There will be some singletrack and a little bit of busy road, but the VAST majority of each will be on dirt fire roads and paved back country roads. There were 135 riders last year, and we're hoping to grow it to 200 this year. It's NOT a race, but definitely more than a parade, and from my position there is a fantastic fun vibe permeating the event. Many of the SoCal usual suspects came over last year, and it definitely has a Rivendell-friendly feel to it. Super-fast roadies, dual-sus MTBers, Albatross-riding Rivenistas, professional cyclocross racers and local high school kids. Just everybody having a good time on a bike! Pics from last year do get you inspired: https://www.flickr.com/groups/redlands-strada-rossa/ In order to make it more of an event, this year we are adding on a Friday night party, and a second ride up in the hills on Sunday. So if you're tempted to come out for the day, consider coming out early and/or staying late! There are motels and business hotels in town, but we can probably scare up a sofa or a back room somewhere as well. And it's definitely family friendly. Non-riding family members and significant others should have a full day exploring the down/area, as well as enjoying the post-ride party with vegi/vegan food, kegs and live music. The Inland Empire Bicycling Alliance http://iebikingalliance.org who oversees the event is going to be charging $25 for it. Technically it's not for the event itself, but for membership in the their non-profit. This keeps it as a club-member event which helps with insurance as well as advocacy. Nobody is trying to get rich from this, and your money is going to support a group that does a LOT of good in the IE. Here's their FB page if you want to see more of what they're about: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Inland-Empire-Biking-Alliance/156207984434074 https://www.facebook.com/pages/Inland-Empire-Biking-Alliance/156207984434074 Please feel free to contact me directly with any questions!!! I hope to see a bunch of you in March! -- Cheers, David Member, Supreme Council of Cyberspace it isn't a contest. Just enjoy the ride. - Seth Vidal -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I was riding with my dad, who's face had begun to blister and turn white from frostbite. We were out for 5 hours. Later in the week, I was in the emergency room for a minor cut and met two people who had turned their hands completely black from exposure on that day, after being outside less than 10 minutes each. I felt pretty good about my 5 hours. When I arrived at the cabin, the warmth of the fire and blankets was too much to overcome. I spent the night warm and toasty, which I do not regret at all. I'm going to attempt a much shorter overnight in a few weeks though, so I can test out the winter camping gear. [RBW] WTB: 9 speed shifters
I'm looking for a set of 9-speed shifters. I'll take friction (silvers or similar), 9-speed index, or even 11-speed Campy Ergos, if you just have to part with a set. Let me know what you have! Or, if you'd like to trade, I have: Sackville trunksack large, olive, VG Stronglight 99 triple crankset w/Campy SR BB, VG Revelate designs Tangle bag, large, new Velo Orange Constructeur front rack, VG Nitto Big Front rack 34F, VG Tektro R559 brakes with Kool stop pads, VG/G I'm refinishing the frame of my '88 Schwinn KOM (bead blast, clear coat powder) and swapping out the original 6-speed XT Uniglide/Araya RM-20's for some 9-speed wheels from an '05 Cannondale. I know that I had a set of Silver shifters, but I remembered that I put them on my daughter's bike (Bianchi 650b conversion). The KOM's current Suntour Accushift Barcons don't have enough travel for 9 speeds, if I recall correctly. Let me know what you have to offer! Re: [RBW] Poor man's Quickbeam?
I’ve been riding my CC as a poor-man’s Quick Beam Style fixed gear for about 15 years. I’ve been very very happy with it. I gather that since I bought mine, they have added front and rear rack mount braze-ons. That’s a good thing. Hugh Flynn Newburyport, MA On Jan 7, 2015, at 7:33 PM, N. Re: [RBW] Wow, I mean, just wow
I recently chased a similar '82 Stumpy on eBay (first production run of the lugged version) that was in nice shape, all original, and manufactured literally 6 months after this TIG model. As if this isn't OT enough, I'm going to stray just a bit further... there's another early mountain bike on eBay (Univega Alpina Uno) with a bi-plane fork crown, (and a solid buy IMO) where the ad (*serious but funny*) reads with Rivendell Style Fork). [RBW] WTB: Ram/Roadeo/Hilsen Frame (ready to take the Riv plunge!)
Howdy all, About a year ago, I bought a 650b Miyata 912 conversion off this list from Bill Lindsay (thanks, Bill!). Since then I've ridden the heck out of the bike and really love it for commuting and bike camping. See here for some good action shots of the bike: http://theradavist.com/2014/12/escaping-black-friday-bicycle-camping-bourbon-black-coffee/# http://theradavist.com/2014/12/escaping-black-friday-bicycle-camping-bourbon-black-coffee/#45 34 http://theradavist.com/2014/11/skipping-town-halloween-go-bicycle-camping/#24 So, after a year, I'm fully drinking the Riv-style Kool-Aid. I think I'm ready for my first Riv for faster, lighter road riding. I'm looking for a 60cm Ram or Hilsen or a 59cm Roadeo. I'd prefer a frame/fork/headset since I have nice Campy 10 speed parts ready for a build, but would also consider a complete bike. Anywho, just let me know if anyone has anything available. Re: [RBW] Re: Coldest Ride on a Rivendell Ever?
That's the way it goes with inadequate footwear. And lets face it, at those temps nearly everything is inadequate. But do not ever let your fingers or toes get to the point you think they are warm again, despite conditions being the same. That's the very edge of frostbite. I've wanted a face mask that covers my nose. I'm fine when climbing, but in a headwind or on the downhills, flesh will freeze off very fast. [RBW] Re: Poor man's Quickbeam?
I use a surly steamroller as my single speed. Fits 32mm tires but uses traditional road side-pull brakes. It doesn't have braze-ons for racks, so I use either a Mark's Rack with a wald basket ziptie'd on, or a Paul Flatbed rack with p-clamps. It's been great. It can take fenders, but only with 28mm tires. On Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at 6:33:00 PM UTC-6, N. Llama wrote: I have suddenly become enamored with the idea of a Quickbeam type bike. if you have to buy new the surlys are a good option, but there are a lot of single-speed bikes out there just look around and they'll pop up. but none of them are QBs or SOs, for those, i think if you're patient and are judicious with parts selection you can come in at $1600 by picking up a second hand one. i paid less then that for my QB a few years ago (second owner). All City nature boy is another option. It has fender mounts, more clearance, horizontal track ends. [RBW] Re: Poor man's Quickbeam?
My 1970's Raleigh Sprite serves as my poor man's quickbeam. I converted it from 1x5 to fixed and it works well. Only apace for 32s under the fenders, but what can you do? There are so many old steel bikes that would serve as a poor man's quick beam. You have to give up a bit of the perfect-ness of a quick beam, but that is what you get for being a poor man. Re: [RBW] Re: Poor man's Quickbeam?
To me the ugly part of the fork is that it's straight blade. There are apparently San Joses with curved forks, but most of them seem to have been straight. Unicrown isn't a deal-breaker for me, since everything else is great! (And, apparently a straight-blade fork wasn't a deal-breaker, either, although I'd love to replace it with a curved one at some point!) My San Jose is in dark blue, in case anyone has the matching curved fork... :-) -- Liz On Thursday, January 8, 2015 at 4:06:29 PM UTC-5, Mark Reimer wrote: Only downside to the San Jose is that it has a unicrown fork. [RBW] question for those who ride with a White Industries double crank
I've been riding with a White Industries VBC crank on my Atlantis since the spring and it's been great, except for one nagging thing. The large ring doesn't seem to be dead straight/flat. If I look down at the chain ring while I am pedalling, I can see it moving from side to side in between the front derailleur. Turns out it's quite tough!), or do White rings have a certain amount of flutter? It's about 3mm of total side-to-side movement I'd say. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Poor man's Quickbeam?
I don't know if you are looking for a complete bike or you are willing to build up a frameset but check out the Handsome Cycles Devil. It's got 73/73 angles, 70mm BB drop, 45mm rake fork and 55.5-56.0 cm effective top-tube. It is a rim brake compatible frameset and will easily take 40mm tires.
