Jim M and others: just curious, is the pre-87 requirement partly to eliminate
the "safely" brake levers and other features which I assume were govt-required
at some point? 1987 sounds about right for those, but they may have appeared
sooner.

Liesl, that looks like a loaded Saddlesack XS on the front. Do you know about
how much weight you carry in it, and does it affect the handling? Asking since
I have a Bleriot and am thinking I will put the XS on the front when I get (and
use) a larger bag for the rear. Thanks,

Steve,

I used to run a XS as a handlebar bag. I found that weight up that high
does effect handling, but was still very handleable. Because of my
sensitivity due to vertigo, I much prefer the weight low, in a TrunkSack.
It carries my food on bikepacking trips.

I would say it is well worth trying out to see if it works for you. I'm
simply a wimp about such things.

Precious to me anyway suggests Tweed Rides.

Given the sparse history of the sport of road racing as a sport in the US,
L'Eroica California arguably nudges toward Tweed.

In Italy where road racing was once what soccer is now, (and remains very
popular), L'Eroica is an excellent way for today's riders to gain some
appreciation for what those who invented the sport experienced.

I built a wheelset for my son Sam’s Quickbeam using Milwaukee Bicycle Co. hubs,
sold at Ben’s Cycle. He has several thousand miles on them, and they are going
strong, trouble free, and quite inexpensive ($91 total for a front/rear
hubset!). They’re nice looking, too, and come in a lot of colors if that
interests you. (I was building up a green QB for my son, so I used a green
Milwaukee hubset, here:

Here’s the link to the Ben’s webpage for these hubs. I highly recommend them.

Re: [RBW] Good camera for on the bike

2015-04-16 Thread David Young
I'm terrible about slowing down and taking the time to take photos, but
I've had good luck with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS20. This is at the
cheaper end of the line of waterproof and shockproof cameras, but for me it
takes much better pictures than my IPhone. The form factor is quite small
(fits in my palm) and is light enough for a jersey pocket. I like the one
button video feature too (didn't think I'd need it but I use it now that
it's so easy). I live in the Pacific NW so waterproof is important to me,
and in the summer, sweat proof is nice too. My IPhone is in a waterproof
case that makes the lens susceptible to glare and attracts difficult to
remove crud. I also keep the use of my phone to a minimum during rides to
prolong battery life. I keep a thin, extra long lanyard on the camera; I
loop it over my head, and it goes across my chest, under my arm, and then
gets tucked into a rear jersey. I find that makes it much more likely for
me to take photos, and I can fiddle with it while riding without the risk
of dropping it. The only downside to this model (that I'm aware of) is the
lack of a lens cover. I wish it had a sliding cover or something that that.

[RBW] Dyna-Sys compatible bar-ends now available - opening up new possibilities

2015-04-16 Thread Jim Bronson
In case you wanted to run something like oh a 40T in the back or any
Shimano 10 speed MTB deralier, or any permutation thereof, Microshift now
makes a dyna-sys compatible bar end:

http://www.microshift.com.tw/BS-M10_Shifters.html

Microshift also makes a 40T compatible derailer with 47T capacity, which is
the largest capacity I have seen, granted, it is fugly, but if you value
functionality over form...

http://www.microshift.com.tw/RD-M78L_rd.html

I had not previously considered going to 10 speed but if I can get a
cassette that goes to 40 for a reasonable price, that would make it more
interesting for me because I might be able to get away with a standard 110
bcd compact double crankset rather than having to go with wide low
cranksets. I think the smallest smal ring you can get on a 110 is 33T,
IIRC. Currently running 28T on a 74 bcd on my triple converted to wide low
double, with 34 in the back

With the current config, 44/28 in back and 11-34 9 speed in , I have from
104.0 down to 21.4

With a proposed config of 48/33 in front and 11-40 in back I get from 113.5
down to 21.5. So basically the low end stays the same, I don't have to use
geek doubles anymore, and I get 113.5 on the top end.

The only downside is that the cassette has a 17 to 21 jump on it, which is
a 23.5% jump, pretty large for a single gear shift. The current 9 speed
has a 17 to 20 jump on it which is a more manageable 17.6%. So maybe I
should be thinking 11 speed 11-40. Ha ha.

The reason I want 113.5 on the top end is that in tailwind situations on
brevet rides I have had problems gearing out at 104 inches. If I could
pedal to a little higher speeds in tailwinds especially in rolling terrain
like we have here in the Texas Hill Country, that would help me keep up
with my friends a little better. Grant is probably shaking his head now
but hey cycling is a big tent.

Of course being able to get the gearing I want on the low end using a
110bcd double is reason enough in of itself for me. I just have to solve
the problem with the big gap in the cassette. Hmm.

No, it has to do with developments in racing bike technology. The Classics
Rendezvous list cut-off is '83, which is the year before Look introduced
clipless pedals. By 1987 carbon frames became more common, but I'm not sure
that's the exact trigger.

So you could have a Look KG86 with clipless pedals from pre-87, but that
would still be a rules violation for L'Eroica.

So you couldn't bring your Rivnendell, if the cutoff is '87. Rivendell was

[RBW] Nitto Dirt Drop Effective Reach - Need some Trig Help.

2015-04-16 Thread David Banzer
Has anybody already figured out what the effective reach of a Nitto Dirt
Drop stem would be, compared to a Nitto 72 degree angle stem? Both 80mm and
100mm.
Also maybe what maximum height would be compared to Nitto Tallux.
I'd guess someone here has figured this out already.
If not, I'll delve into my high school trig skills.

My road bike is a custom Tom Kellogg built with the same geometry he used
in the early '80s and with NOS from the 1980s Columbus tubing and NOS
Cinelli lugs. Parts are all vintage Campy (although for most riding I use
dual caliper Shimano brakes rather than the single caliper Campy - what
liking to stop and all) Have not asked but wonder whether it would be
allowed.

2015-04-16 Thread Joe Bunik
>From my perspective, there are always exceptions that prove the rule! ;-)

I really didn't see (nor recall reading in their web postings!) any
hard-lining by Eroica California organizers, and in fact I feel Wes
went out of his way to attract a broadly diverse, common-interest
field to the party. Maybe that will change as popularity grows but,
for this year I know they genuinely wanted to get people in there and
exposed to the whole concept.

1987 *is pretty liberal* a cut-off date IMO but, even then the
guidelines are still inclusive of our current generation of
"keeper-of-the-flame", traditional framebuilders. In a nutshell, the
expectations were for historic road / race-appropriate (i.e. no
touring/cyclocross/mountain) bicycles, no aero brake cables, no STI /
brifters, no clipless / SPD pedals, and traditional dress welcomed. I
could certainly see a Roadeo or AHH with dt shifters and classic
non-aero levers fitting in.

Where I probably could have easily rode in on my old touring bike,
with racks and cantis and triple crank... how fair would that be to
everyone else playing the game to their own personal best? As others
have stated, if it's not really your boat... there are plenty of other
group rides available!

I wish it were monthly!

That's gonna be fun! Let us know how it goes!

On yesterday's ride/grocery run, I contemplated the fact that I rode 15 or

are in the mountains, along with private property. Most of my riding is

to have so much so close and just be able to head out the front door.
You're gonna love rediscovering your backyard!

[RBW] Perfect number of bikes = N?

2015-04-16 Thread Deacon Patrick
I always try (rarely succeed) to practice contentment. I’m content with that.
Grin. Part of living this simplicity is to strive to find a way to make what we
have work. It may not be the perfect tool, but using one thing multiple ways
has a joy all it’s own.

Since sometime this winter I’ve wanted a go-fast geared country bike. But we
(wisely) put our money toward gearing up for family biking. The challenge has
been could I do longer rides on the Quickbeam? So far, I’ve done as long as 94
miles, 2/3rds of it dirt, and returned still feeling I could have pushed and
done 120 miles (but pushing to that degree isn’t wise given the brain injury
and my extra safety net I like to keep). Pushing to ride the QB this way has
led me to discover things about riding and about my own strength and endurance
I may not have discovered on a geared bike. That is wonderful gift of
simplicity, finding more in less.

So I am content, for now, with N. There is joy and peace in that, especially
considering I know it makes getting bikes for my wife and lassies possible. Of
course, that is also what I said when N was just the Hunqapillar. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] Perfect number of bikes = N?

2015-04-16 Thread Patrick Moore
Patrick: I predict that in a couple of years you'll end up with a Roadeo. I
myself have tried any number of bike combinations, with a high of 6 to a
low of 1 (but with triple wheelsets). I'm now stabilized, one hopes, at the
statutory minimum of 3:

Fun to ride unladen/load carrying/fender equipped/dynamo equipped all
rounder.
Light as possible gofast.
Off road bike.

I could add any number of hypotheticals: fatbike, Ravn, nimble singletrack
26er,Monocog 29er, folder, fun to ride beater, classic stage racer, racing
trike, recumbent, e-bike -- just kidding about the last 2. But with the
soon (God willing) S3X optional rear wheel for the all rounder, which will
take the place of the Ram, I think this is a pretty good number for my own
particular uses -- 75% errand detours, occasional gofast hill climb, dirt
road riding.

But I am biased toward performance road bikes, even if I forego multiple
gears most of the time.

... Tho' I am seriously thinking about a load-capable, fixed gear, drop
barred folder ...

Rodeo's tire clearance is too narrow for the roads and trails I piece
together. Legolas, Sam, or Homer for tire clearances of at least 40mm.

But the point I was poorly attempting to make, is that even the endeavour
to be content with what is until circumstances allow otherwise opens a
treasure chest of riches unexpected.

Re: [RBW] Re: Canti-Rom

2015-04-16 Thread Joe Broach
That is weird, Luke. My 63 C-Rom fit Pasela 32s + VO 700x49 fenders nicely.
The brake bridge is a little low on these and becomes the tight spot (I
wonder if someone forgot to deduct the fender boss thickness), but I've run
the slightly bigger GB Cypres 700x32 under the same fenders with no issue.
Agree that 35s are a no-go with metal fenders, though, at least in back.

Re: [RBW] Perfect number of bikes = N?

2015-04-16 Thread Mike Shaljian
My perfect number of bikes is a JoNes Plus ;)

I initially set up the bike with (tubed) Super Motos to see how it faired as a
more road-orientated bike, and I was blown away by how fast, comfortable and
stable it was, once I got the cockpit setup properly. I've since been riding it
with 3" Bontrager Chupacabras and am very pleased with how well those roll on
the road for my commuting, but the real joy is unleashing it on the trails and
gravel. It's amazing how much ease you can ride with in the 29+ setup, has to
be experienced to really be understood. The 38's on my Sam now feel strikingly
skinny and I really can't imagine riding a tire skinnier than 60mm and above 20
PSI anymore. Fatter is better, and definitely no slower!

I'm going to put together a second wheelset soon and try to run the Super Motos
tubeless, and I'm hoping it will be noticeably faster/funner than before.
Tubeless really seems like the way to go to me, just so much less hassle and a
nicer ride at lower pressure than the clincher approach, it seems. Before
someone chirps in with "it's not a race, just enjoy the ride. . ." I'll make a
pre-emptive strike and say that some of us are in a state of enjoyment when
riding fast, though not in competition with some Peloton Freds!

As much fun as I've had in the thousands and thousands of miles on my
Rivendells, I think Jeff Jones has just made a punctuated equillibrium-type
jump in the biking world with this design. It seems to be a more than capable
bikepacking bike, a plenty agile and stout mountain bike, and a freakishly fast
all-road bike, all-in-one.

[RBW] Re: [BOB] WTB- single speed rear wheel, 700c, 120mm, 36 hole

2015-04-16 Thread Kainalu
Thanks Steven! That's a wonderfully kind offer, and I've heard good things
about Sun rims, but they're a little narrower than what I'm on the hunt for.
Currently I have the Mavic MA3's on the bike, I think they're of similar width,
which works great with the 32mm panaracers. I'm just looking to max out my
clearances and have a chance to run the fixed gear steel studded ice bike of my
dreams next year. I've got the tires and they made for an enjoyable commute
this winter on my Hillborne, but I acquired the Quickbeam with that dream in
mind. That it's so rad with the 32's is a huge bonus.
Thanks again

I always love this discussion. And everyone is right. I think I could get by
quite nicely with just my Hilsen, but...I have a Hunq and Roadeo (although the
Roadeo is at home in KC with me in CT.) And I perk up when I see Quikbeam FS
ads on the list. And I'm pretty sure that a Bike Friday is in my future and how
can I get by without a cargo bike...N+1 for me. But if I did just have the
Hilsen, I think I'd want 3 wheelsets like Patrick Moore once had.

My emphases, for reading clarity.

Not only was Rivendell employee Joe Bunik a rider (on a non-RBW but very
BOB-ish bike), but at least one unidentified rider on an AHH completed the
long course, during which he was hit by a teenaged driver in a
poorly-controlled van:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/classic-rendezvous-lightweight-vintage-bicycles/pQ1BucSQP60

Rivendells (most of them) are lugged steel. Standard RBW build for drop
bars includes aero brakes; those would have to be replaced with traditional
routing. Most Riv frames will take friction barcons; whether the judges
would accept Silvers as analogous to Suntour retrofrictions is something I
would ask in advance, with a set of Suntours ready to swap in, just in
case. The rules don't specifically prohibit freehubs, but a set of box rims
with a rear freewheel would trump any arguments. A 135mm rear wheel with a
7-speed FW sounds pretty non-dishy.

And of course, clipless/cleated pedals are forbidden,

Cantis (as I understand) are acceptable, particularly given the
preponderance of evidence of road race bikes from 50+ years ago
originally spec'd with. I brought my JT to ride Saturday and join in
with others in commemorating Jack (who passed last December) and to
send our well-wishes to the remaining brother, Ken.

One might consider the Centurion Semi-Pro as Roadeo's Grandpa - fat
clearances and a spirited ride! (and 5sp freewheel!)

Re: [RBW] Perfect number of bikes = N?

2015-04-16 Thread Mike Shaljian
I'll also add that it's interesting to me how the fat tire deal really grows on
you (or me) rather quickly and it wasn't long before even the 3-inchers felt
pretty much normal. I remember looking at a Krampus with 3" knards in the
Universal Cycles showroom in Portland and thinking "my god, what have I done. .
.", ordering a 29+ Jones creation basically on faith. I chose not to ask to
test ride the Surly (since it was raining and I had no intention of buying one)
and just told myself the exuberant JJ praise on the internet must be real. So
glad I was an early adopter of the Plus.

On my test ride with the Super Motos the 60mm tires even felt a little
clownish. However, the wider = more rolling resistance thing really is a
(false) matter of perception with the right setup, and it wasn't long before I
was in love with the inherent suppleness and stability of a truly fat tire. No
fear of washing out on fast gravel descents is so great. When I get a bottle
dynamo and switchover my light system and rear rack from the Hillborne this
will really be the bike I longed for but didn't think was possible: fast,
tough, stable and packable/fendered(?)/tour-able.

Another big difference (which no longer feels novel) is how the greater inertia
of the heavier wheelset makes cruising feel effortless on flat to low-grade
sections. Also, Jeff Jones mentions the somewhat abstract-sounding concept of
"riding in the bike" on his website, but this bike really does feel more like
an extension of my body and the ride is just a lot of fun because everything is
so much easier on the body.

I'll try and get some more pictures this weekend with the Plus in its natural
singletrack surroundings!

Now that I weighed in on this, I regret to report the following:

And so much more. Like bike rides into Tijuana (that is much more of a

There will be a memorial, ride, and (ahem) consumption of liquid
