[RBW] Clementine Believer

2015-07-08 Thread Aaron Young
I saw only one bottle mount on the Clementine. The Blug shows a bottle
behind the seat tube on that black Clemmy. It appears strapped on though.
I think the absence of a bottle holder somewhere on the seat tube is
disappointing.
Maybe it didn't work well on prototypes??

Looking at the Cygolite website, it looks like the style of the mount is
opposite of that of the B&M. With the B&M the rails on the light slide over
the groves on the mount. With the Cygolite it looks like the rails on the

[RBW] Re: Sugino Wide/Low Feedback + Are Sugino Cranks STI Compatible ??

2015-07-08 Thread David Person
Not directly related to your question but I'm running a Herse crank with
44/28 on my Sam and I had to use a Shimano CX-70 derailleur if I wanted to
set the cage height at the recommended 1-3mm above the large chainring. I
tried using a Shimano 105 and could not lower it enough before the bottom
of the cage hit the chainstay. Would have had to run it with more than the
recommended gap between the cage and the chainring. I'm using Dura-Ace
9-speed bar ends in index mode on the right and it hits all the cogs when
on the large chainring. I only use the larger half of the cogs when in the
small chainring.

2015-07-08 Thread Richard L
By STI, I'm guessing you mean integrated shifters and brake levers? If so,
my dated experience with 9-speed STI and a 46t chain ring was that front
derailleur shifting was poor and the drive train was plagued with constant
noise. After several mechanics could not fix the problem, switching to a
48t chain ring helped quite a bit.

[RBW] FS: Phase 2 of my bike downsize: Low Trail fork Hunqapillar will be the first to go...

2015-07-08 Thread René Sterental
With the wonderful help and insight provided by some members on this group,
both publicly and privately, I'm ready for phase 2 of my downsize, which is
getting rid of my first Rivendell bike.

I've decided the bike I'm going to sell is my Hunqapillar with its low
trail fork and pewter paint job. It wasn't easy to make this decision, for
all the obvious emotional reasons, but after following the advice of one
list member on riding one bike only for a while, alternating between my
Hunqapillar and my Atlantis (both with low trail forks), there is no doubt
in my mind that the one I enjoy the most, can ride most comfortably and
just love to take out when I can ride, is the Atlantis in its latest
configuration with the Barlow Pass tires and the Compass Elysees handlebars
with reverse brake levers. So, while I can rationalize why I would still
keep the Hunqapillar, contrary to what I first thought I'd do, this is the
one that has to go now.

In parallel to all these thoughts, and probably due to the same underlying
root causes and following the advice of another list member, I finally read
Grant's book "Eat Bacon, Don't Jog", and exactly two months ago started
following the HFLC protocol that he outlines so clearly and in such a
simple manner. Today I've broken the 20 lbs loss barrier, which of course,
has huge implications for how and what I'll ride. Therefore, when next I
manage to do an S240, not before Fall, I presume, it will be on my Atlantis
instead of the Hunqapillar. Additionally, in the coming months I'll be
riding my Homer a lot more, as well as my Betty Foy.

The reason for my post is to explore whether to sell the Hunqapillar as a
complete bike, or sell the frame and forks plus the parts separately. I'm
traveling for business tomorrow and won't be back until July 26, so I'd
like to use this time to gauge interest from the group, as well as to get
some formal offers if anyone is really interested.

Here is what I would sell, as a whole or in parts (currently assembled):

- 58cm Hunqapillar with pewter/cream paint job and low trail fork painted
to match, with all braze-ons needed for racks and fenders and Chris King
silver headset as well as front/rear brake cable stops for cantilever
brakes and original 26.8 Nitto seat post. Currently outfitted with downtube
Duraace down tube 9 speed shifters.
- Original fork with original gray/plumb paint
- Nitto Mini front rack
- Nitto Big rear rack
- Tubus Nova lowrider stainless steel front rack
- 700c A719/XT wheelset built by Rich Lesnik @ Riv
- 60mm steel Berthoud fenders (with a couple of almost invisible nicks from
regular use)
- Front Paul Neo-Retro high polish brake
- Rear Paul Touring Canti high polish brake
- Phil bottom bracket (don't remember its width, but perfect for the
Hunqapillar with a Sugino crankset)
- Sugino triple crankset (I currently have a custom double + guard that I'm
going to keep, but I think I have a spare triple one)
- No front derailer, as I'm keeping the Centaur one I currently have.
- Rear Shimano XT Shadow RD M-772 (not sure if I may keep it and substitute
for a different one if the bike is sold assembled)
- Trimmed to fit silver Pletscher twin kickstand
- Front & rear Big Ben tires with lots of life left
- Bosco Bullmoose handlebar, or regular Bosco with Nitto stem.
- Shimano brake levers (or similar)
- MKS Sneaker pedals
- No bottle cages as I'm keeping the King cages currently installed
- Brooks leather ring grips
- Brooks B17 Special (I think) practically brand new saddle.

Let me know if you are interested in either the whole bike or parts of it,
and make some serious offers if you are serious about it. I'd rather sell
locally in the Bay Area, but can arrange for shipping as needed, with the
appropriate additional charges. Whatever happens will happen on July 26 or
afterwards. Photos of different states of the bike:

Thank you all so much, for all the help, guidance, feedback and enduring my
long messages!

[RBW] Re: Didn't see that coming... Segmented Cast Fork Crown on BLUG

2015-07-08 Thread Bill Lindsay
That's what I've been thinking. Imagine a Clem-ish tandem. Something that
is as fun and smile-making and laid back and country-ish as a Clem, but as
nice and stout as functional as a Rivendell, but is a tandem. That bike
flat-out does not exist and never has existed. Ever.

That's what I'm hoping for.

[RBW] Re: Seeking any info on renting or buying a bike in Berlin

2015-07-08 Thread dougP
Jim:

Get in contact with Top Bicycle in Prague:

http://www.topbicycle.com/BikeRental.htm

Europeans don't respond to e-mail as quickly as we're used to so you're
cutting it a bit close. We used them on our Vienna to Linz to Prague
segment a couple of years ago. They delivered the bikes to our hotel in
Vienna, with the maps, and we dropped them off at another hotel in Prague.
You might be able to work out some similar service between your 2 points.
We rented Scott hybrids for around 20-25 euro per day per bike (IIRC) and
they were fine for our purposes. No mechanicals, not even a flat in
several hundred kilometers. Decent rear rack. We brought our own
panniers.

While I haven't looked into it myself, I've heard that in Europe larger
bike shops take trades, etc., & do a decent business in used bikes.

Have a great trip (is there any other kind???)

[RBW] Re: Bars on the Hunqapillar

2015-07-08 Thread drew
my hunq had albatross bars and a 11cm tallux for most of it's life. for
most normal day riding, i was very happy with that even though i mostly
found my hands sliding forward to the curves, kinda sitting on top of the
brake clamps. on a 1.5 week tour, this started to become quite
uncomfortable. separately, i couldnt find a comfortable place for my hands
on long, steep climbs. they wanted to go to the front of the bar, but the
downslope made that feel weird. anyway, i got home, got curious, and put
on an albastache with 8cm dirt drop stem. so far so good. haven't done any
multi day rides yet where they will truly reveal themselves, but the
albastache are great/comfortable/uprightish with still some forward lean
capability for the 10 mile rides ive been doing.

also, ill come out and say that i think mustache style bars look great, and
ill admit that i kept the albatross cockpit fully intact for re-plugging
in, because it truly was an almost always perfect set up that im not yet
fully convinced i have improved on.

Like Kevin, I have mustache bars and an 80mm dirt drop stem on my
Hunqapillar and love that combination. However, the guy who sold me the
bike had drop bars on it and seemed satisfied with them. I don't know which
drop bars they were, they didn't feel right to me and he agreed to a price
drop if he kept the handlebars.

Full disclosure: I'm a mustache bar fan. I also have them on my Atlantis,
my Bridgestone and my Surly LHT. But I have drop bars (Nitto Noodles) on
other bikes like the Ram and Bleriot.

[RBW] Re: Bars on the Hunqapillar

2015-07-08 Thread Ginz
Mine has Bullmoose. For general riding and trails, I use them.

I run Albas on another bike and love them. I just setup my old Albatross
bar on the Hunq with a Nitto Technomic deluxe using cable quick-connectors.
I can swap the entire cockpit quickly. For a tour or long, non-rough
trail ride, I would use them.

The Bullmoose is a little wide, even for trails, though I am a rather small
guy. The inward wrist position of the Albas causes the hand to slide
forward when braking on rough trails, but is supreme for everything else.

I just ordered the Ahearne MAP bars. I have ~45 degree angle bars on my
hardtail and that has been great on the roughest trails. I'm hoping the
MAP bar will be a comfy compromise between Alba and Bullmoose.

Re: [RBW] Seattle-to-Portland this weekend?

If I were to do STP again, I would do it as a two-day ride and start later in
the day, after the carnage is more or less done and the pack thins out. In
2013, it took me until past Centralia to be able to ride without worrying about
other riders.

yes, works fine. The set up you describe is working well on my Gunnar

Mine is either 24-40 or 26-40. with an 11-34. I am able to use the full
cassette on the large (40) chainring, but not quite with the small
chainring - it gets a little grindy when using the small cogs on the
cassette.

good luck

[RBW] Re: Bars on the Hunqapillar

2015-07-08 Thread Kevin Lindsey
A confirmed drop-bar-on-road-bike kinda guy, I decided to bite the bullet
and build my Hunq per Riv specs, i.e. with a Nitto dirt drop stem and a
moustache handlebar. I thought it looked goofy but, man, is it comfortable
and fun. That set-up handles everything from long rides to pokes around
the neighborhood, fair weather or foul, and I've never had numb hands or
wrists. Probably the perfect set-up for a Hunq. I still think it looks a
little goofy, but I have to say that I get plenty of compliments from other
cyclists.

[RBW] Bars on the Hunqapillar

2015-07-08 Thread Jack Doran
Hi all,

I recently put in an order for a Hunqapillar and was wondering what you
current Hunq riders have to say about your bar/stem configurations. A
couple very helpful employees at Rivendell said in so many words that the
Hunq is really designed for an upright bar, and that drops don't really
suit the frame since they'll put unwanted pressure on the wrists and
shoulders because the reach on the Hunq is pretty long and the head tube
isn't as long as, say, the Sam. No gripe about the upright option; I've
used an albatross bar and I think it's every bit as good as the Riv folks
say it is. But I'm thinking about potential options down the road that
might make the Hunq as much a shred sled as a nice hefty, comfy touring
bike that will handle the dirt nicely. I see a lot of Hunqs online with
drop bars, mustache bars, Soma Junebug, etc. and not necessarily with a
riser stem. Surely all those folks can't be hating the world when they're
atop their Hunqapillars

[RBW] Sugino Wide/Low Feedback + Are Sugino Cranks STI Compatible ??

2015-07-08 Thread RDS
Are the Sugino cranks that Riv sells (Triple (46/36/24) or Wide/Lo double)
compatible with 9 Speed Shimano STI Shifters?

With the Wide/Low crank, can you successfully use the full range of the
cassette with each front chainring (without cross-chain issues)? For
example, if I had a 11/34 cassette, could I use the 40-11 as well as the
40-34? and could I use the 26-11 as well as the 26-34?

Thanks In Advance

[RBW] Seeking any info on renting or buying a bike in Berlin

2015-07-08 Thread James Warren

Hi all,
I'll be spending 18 days in Europe, based in Berlin. When I arrive this coming
weekend, I intend to go to one of the big swap meets to try to get a bike. I'm
not super picky, but I want the bike to fit me well enough to not hurt my neck
or upper back during a day of riding. I typically ride Rivs that are 64-65 cm
with less sloping top tube and 60-62 cm with 6 degree upsloping top tube. I
expect that bikes will be smaller than ideal, so swept-back or mountainish or
Euro-touring-style bars will be preferred.

Obviously, the swap meet may not pan out. I am willing to rent a bike or buy
one there and sell it off when the trip is over. Does anyone have any leads on
a way to make getting a bike easier? I have looked at Craigslist for Berlin.

Riv content: we're planning a ramble from Prague to Dresden, and I'll bring my
Riv luggage to attach to the bike and share the experience when I get back.
It'll be a S72O.

Thank you,
Jim W.
Berkeley, CA (temporarily)

[RBW] Re: Didn't see that coming... Segmented Cast Fork Crown on BLUG

2015-07-08 Thread Bill Lindsay
That's the challenge, isn't it? The current thing is so good, and you want
to act before the current thing is no longer available. But the next thing
might be irresistable, too! But then you don't buy the current thing and
then when the next thing isn't what you want, then you are left with
nuthin!

The only way to play it safe is always buy the current thing when you like
it. Your only regret will be having too many nice bikes, which is about
the least regrettable regret one could possibly have.

[RBW] FS: Camp'n Crunch (Nitto Campee front rack)

2015-07-08 Thread Joe Bunik
This rack took a bullet for me when I was doored back in 2014...

https://www.flickr.com/photos/joe_bunik/sets/72157653276863043

Damage seems confined to the non-driveside, with the other having
remained straight/true. The left-side though deformed into something
of an hourglass condition. I spent < 5 minutes tapping at it with a
set of wood blocks and began straightening it out... when I realized
that I am somewhat "over this" rack, regardless.

This is the "650B" version with the straight dropout tangs, as opposed
to the multi-mount variation (i.e. you need a 2nd/forward brazeon at
your dropout), however I think it could play to varying degrees with
other wheelsizes... YMMV.

The pannier mounts were NOT attached at the time and are in original
condition. Also, the underside threaded bolt (for fenders) was
removed. Struts pictured will be included.

$150 shipped or $125 picked up in Walnut Creek, CA.

Thanks
=- Joe Bunik

[RBW] Re: Biking poem

2015-07-08 Thread velomann
I know for sure that "Maybe alone on my Bike," was published in *Smoke's
Way* in 1984, and may have been published in another collection before
that. So yes, before his passing. I too am a tremendous fan, and for those
who want to know more about Bill Staffords life, I can't recommend highly
enough his book *Down I My Heart* about his years working in logging camps
as a consciencious objector during WWII. Also his collection of writings *Every
War Has Two Losers*. I had the great good fortune to meet Bill once when he
and his son Kim came to talk to us at a gathering of Oregon English
teachers at the coast. He was gracious and funny and a wonderful
storyteller. He remains a towering literary figure here in Oregon, and his
students and disciples continue to honor his memory. Interestingly, I had a
conversation with his son Kim - head of Creative Writing at Lewis and
Clark University - several years after his father's passing about this poem
and bicycle poems in general. He mentioned that one of his father's best
known poems,
"Fifteen," http://writersalmanac.publicradio.org/index.php?date=2009%2F08%2F27
was, according to a story his father told him, originally inspired by
finding a bicyle crashed on the side of a country road, but he felt the
poem was more effective with the transformation to a motorcycle.
Interesting to read it in that light though. Bill's daughter Kit, the main
character of this well-known
poem: http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/with-kit-age-7-at-the-beach/ lives in
the mountain town of Sister's Oregon, is a poet and artist, and very active
in bringing arts education to students. For those who are interested in
this sort of thing, I maintain a long-neglected blog devoted to bicycle
poetry and art called Velotry where you can find the Stafford poem, and
where I just added a couple by Billy Collins. It's
here: http://velotry.blogspot.com/

Where are you located?

Did they ever make a 50cm? According to the Riv geo charts someone
published (see link) on google docs I see a 47cm and 52cm.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AjehUKAztnO8dEFRVEYxUWpxeXNPMHZMeDZINmNUMWc#gid=0

I saw one in person back a few months ago. The price was on the high side
but it was in great condition. I took some mesurements and some pictures
and the top tube was really short so it was too small for my girlfriend. I
think it must have been a 47cm, 26" wheel version with a 53.5cm top tube. I
might be able to find out if it ever sold.

you have to mcgyver water bottle mounts with aftermarkets I assume ? With
all that real estate behind the ST it seems there could be at least 1 if
not 2 braze-ons mounted at like 45 degree angles backwards .

Re: [RBW] Re: I can't get the shifting dialed in

2015-07-08 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks so much for all the great input. Here's my plan: I'm going to re-create
what worked for so long on the Hilsen. I'm getting a new rear derailer and new
Shimano bar-ends. After reading everyones suggestions, my intuition tells me
this is the way to go. Another suggestion that really intrigued me was to go
with an 8-speed cassette and a 9-speed chain. I'm going to wait on that because
I don't want to make to major of a change before PBP. Anyway, I'll report back
in a couple of weeks when the parts arrive and I install them. Thanks everyone!
