Re: [RBW] Copper bottles??

2015-11-14 Thread Ron Mc
I wish I had one of those this morning. Riding down to meet my friends who
have set up their RVs at a KOA on the cross-town greenway trail, and of
course have their bikes. My buddy homebrews (buys Russian River "parts"
and homebrews real Pliny), kegs in 5-gal soda cans, and has this portable
draft stand.

It would be cool to draw my Pliny into a my own copper stein that came from
my water bottle cage.

[RBW] Re: The Mysterious Homer

2015-11-14 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
I have one of the early Homers, built by Toyo. It's a 59. I ride it
everywhere.

Back a while ago, Brian Eno was interviewed and spoke his ideal band. He
cited the melodic sense and attention to timbre of Kraftwerk, mated to the
rhythm section of Parliament/Funkadelic. Arguably, he got close during the
"Stop Making Sense/Remain In Light" period of Talking Heads.

That idea has always been how the Hilsen feels to me.

Perhaps the more appropriate analogy would be a Ferrari with Hummer
suspension. When GP was riding the East Bay Hills on the bike which was
not named Honus Wagner
-
https://www.flickr.com/photos/jeromehaines/189470883/in/album-72157594198990353/

- 32 mm on a "road" tire was pretty honkin' big. (...and the 650B was
fairly fringe, and GP had recently self-stitched a 603 together to
experiment).

At the time, I was doing CX races, and really wanted to see about obtaining
a Legolas. I wanted some lever-shiftable gears as an alternative to the
Quickbeamm which I was riding everywhere and enjoying much, much more than
my multi-geared, soft-nosed mtb. When I visited the RBWHQ&L, Grant pushed
me out on this new bike, on tires which he warned me were "too small"
(Rolly Polly 28's) and I came back a believer. Since I'd been riding my
CX-specific bike on mixed-terrain rides, I had something to compare it to.
The Hilsen just outclassed that bike, handled better and gave me a much
more comfortable ride.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclofiend/sets/72157602016418451/

http://www.cyclofiend.com/cc/2008/cc522-cyclofiend_jim0908.html

I rode, raced (CX), centuried and brevet-ed with the Homer, and do not
think anything of riding it from A to B with strong vectors toward any
terrain that interests me. I'm kinda partial to JB Greens. Though I've
run knibblies on it as well. But, I like the ride with the JB's, and the
aesthetic of running them on trails, rocks and whatever.

As far as the Sam, I do recall when Grant was tweaking that design. My
recollection is that he viewed it a notch closer to Atlantis than the
Hilsen, mostly because they had the Roadeo/San Marcos, which a notch the
other way. Like many things, the design itself suggests refinements, and
he's always thinking about how to make something more of whatever it is.

As with most of Grant's designs, the tuning, the tweaking and the
refinements are all for you to do. What you'll find is that whatever idea
you might have, you can probably do it with the Hilsen.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell models and year they were introduced?

2015-11-14 Thread Doug Van Cleve
Howdy folks.

I aluded to this in my post yesterday, but the original Rivendells, the
Road Standard, were spec built by Waterford. I don't think they were
"custom" at all the first few years, same goes for the original All
'Rounder, mountainbike (might have only been Waterford)and possibly
LongLow. At some point you could customize, and production shifted to Joe
Starck and then match. The Heron and Heron Touring were before any of the
Toyo built models and were again made by Waterford. I am sure some other
old timers or scribes who want to delve through the old Readers can flesh
that out more, but I am pretty sure that chronology is correct.

how versatile the 52cm Clementine is, I find it perfectly comfortable with

That's a huge plus. Only wrinkle in the good feelings is I broke off a
screw in one of the rear braze ons, then broke of a drill bit trying to
remove it... lesson learned is that all threads need to be chased before
use on my Clementine at least. I had a fairly significant amount of paint
that needed removing. Luckily their's 4 sets of braze on's back there...

Off for a ride to a late lunch on these two bikes!

folding bead, tubeless-ready, 600g.
They also have Marathon 44 mm

[RBW] It was a nice day for...

2015-11-14 Thread JohnS
1. A ride on the QB - The forecast for Thursday was for 70% chance of
precipitation, so a good excuse not to paint the exterior trim around our
front door.

2. Fenders - There was a chance for light rain but not down pours, so on
went the fenders. I had taken them off back in the spring when I mounted
the folding Pasela tires on the QB. Didn't need them until now.

3. Wool socks - The fenders kept most of the rain from splashing up on me,
but my feet still got wet. None the less, the wool socks did the job at
keeping my feet comfortable.

4. Light weight rain coat - When I started the ride it wasn't raining, so
this simple rain coat from LL Bean folds up and is easily stored in the
Shop Sack. I had to put it on about 5 miles into the ride when it went from
a light drizzle to a steady light rain. I wore it for about another 5 miles
when it stopped, just before a long gradual climb, off it came, a quick
shake to get the water off and back into the Shop Sack it went. I wore it
again near the end of the ride when the drizzle picked up again.

5. Tail light - this is a strap on Bontrager which uses a USB cable to
connect to my laptop for charging. I like how it has a low and high setting
for each of the modes. I went with the steady flash in the high beam
setting when it was raining.

6. Cycle cap - This one is also from Bontrager, LBS is Trek dealer so they
have a good selection of Bontrager accessories. It fits under my helmet
comfortably and the flaps can be folded up to expose my ears to help
regulate my body temp.

7. Post ride hot shower, dry clothes and hot coffee - Goes with out saying,
but after 38 miles of cool damp/wet riding, they felt great!

Moral of the story, try not to let a little rain stop you from getting out
for a great ride. Just be prepared and enjoy the time in the saddle!

[RBW] Re: Cross/knobby 650B tires

2015-11-14 Thread Mike Schiller
Schwalbe has a 60 mm wide 650B tire coming out called the Big one. Shallow
micro knobs so it should do fine on pavement and gravel.

The Vee Rubber Speedster is a 650B x 1.95 tire that is another smoother
conditions tire They measure about 47 mm on a Dyad.

I envy you folks that live within visiting range of Riv. If any one goes to
test ride that proto-Appaloosa, it would be great to hear your thoughts on it.
You could probably test Sams for size and Cheviots for the long chain stay ride
quality and get a good feel for it that way too. Any additional info they gave
you would certainly be welcome here.

[RBW] Velocity Cliffhanger 650B Rim experience?

2015-11-14 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Forgive the cross post from 650b... since it's for the Bomba I figure it's
fair to share. By the velocity description it seems like this is a very
Riv-ish rim and the price from Velocity is just about the same as the Atlas
which Riv is selling.

I'm thinking about a new wheelset for my Bombadil, aimed at Schwable Nobby
Nic's (2.25), Furious Fred's (2.1) or possibly the 48mm Compass EL tires at
some point. I like Velocity rims and have used the synergy, dyad and A23
to date. Only the early edition synergy's have given me any grief and I
particularly liked a 700c wheelset I built up w/ the Dyads. Anyway... I
was perusing velocity's site and saw these big honkin Cliffhanger rims;

http://store.velocityusa.com/p/cliffhanger-27-5/rims_touring_650b?pp=12

I'm deciding between these and the Atlas, Synergy or 650B Dyad's... oh and
I'm only going for 36H rims which is why I grugingly passed on all those
great deals on the Pacenti rims recently. I need rim brake compatibility
due to the Bombadil/Saluki bikes but I'll be throwing 6 bolt disc capable
hubs in them (shimano deore level) in case I ever take the opportunity to
dabble in those waters... :)

Any thoughts?

Re: [RBW] Velocity Cliffhanger 650B Rim experience?

2015-11-14 Thread Tim Gavin
The Cliffhanger seems like a great rim for a Bomba. They're 5 mm wider
than the Atlas or A23, and not much heavier.

The 2.1 Thunder Burt would be a good tire to try as well. They're
in-between the Schwalbe knobbies and the Compass tires you referenced, as
far as speed and traction.

Re: [RBW] Velocity Cliffhanger 650B Rim experience?

2015-11-14 Thread Ryan Ray
My only complaint about Velocity rims is that you can't really tell which
rim is for what. They all seem to be for touring/trekking/offroad/on-road
whatever.

For example the Atlas is listed in Road, Touring, Cross. Others are listed
in multiple categories too. The Cliffhanger is in Mountain and Touring but
so is the Dyad and the Chukker.

I went with Atlas 32 hole 650b for my city/gravel/overnighter bike but
honestly I have no idea why.

[RBW] Guess which one is mine...

2015-11-14 Thread Surlyprof
https://www.flickr.com/photos/129545862@N03/22633062849/in/dateposted-public/

This image struck me the other day as I was about to get off the train from
my evening commute. Every bike (aside from mine) was black with one dark
blue exception. There is the occasional steel bike but it's mostly a sea
of carbon and aluminum. Sam tends to stand out (proudly I might add). I
do receive the occasional, "Nice bike" or "That's in great shape for such
an old bike" but mostly no one appears interested. It's mostly a
crabon-riding, MAMIL crowd. I am not the least bit self-conscious about
this because I know that, upon exiting the train, I will end my day with a
delightful meander down the Alameda water channel to the wife and dogs in
our little bungalow in Niles. It's always such a great way to wind down at
the end of even the most stressful workday. I always end up happy by the
time I arrive home.

Anyone else deal with this sort of fish out of water situation with their
Riv or is it just me and my commute? Just curious.
John

I didn't take too many photos unfortunately, but pics to prove:

[RBW] Re: Rivendell models and year they were introduced?

2015-11-14 Thread Jeremy Till
We've done this a couple of times before, but not recently. Here's a
thread from 2011:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/rbw-owners-bunch/marty$20models/rbw-owners-bunch/yv4cUItn4VE/dWYHgqzzIyQJ

This was prompted by some neat work done by lister Marty culling together a
poster with one picture of every model/variation of Riv up to that point,
then another with their headbages:

 tires to float on it.
