[RBW] For Sale: Large ShopSack, Olive

2015-12-08 Thread Evan E.
Good condition. Used gently and seldom. Happy to send you pictures if you
like, but it looks just like the larger ShopSack that Rivendell shows here:

http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/bashm-o.htm

I'm selling this bag only because I've switched to a medium Wald basket,
and the large ShopSack overflows a medium basket.

$42 shipped in the Lower 48.

All proceeds from the sale of this bag go right back to Rivendell.

Please reply off list if you can. Thanks.

Re: [RBW] Re: Riv 12-40 cassette

2015-12-08 Thread William deRosset
Dear Joe,

I've read that racing cyclists would use their gears that way back when
chains were stiffer and chainline an obsession--big ring with the small
tooth-count half, and small ring with the large cogs. But they'd be working
with 4 or 5 cogs, and relatively small gaps between chainrings--like five
teeth. However, those days were long gone with 6-speed gear. Pretty much
all of the older riders when I got going used "standard" racing gears, so
42-52 (or 53--ooh a sprinter!) up front and a 13-XX cluster in back. In
Louisiana, XX = 18 or 19; in Colorado, XX = 24 or 28. A few had the drilled
Campy triple setups, but they weren't racers. I started on the same stuff
(though with junior gears) and switched to HS+G once I got over my racing
bug. It remains an elegant and efficient system, at the expense of a triple
chainring setup.

I mostly use a wide-range crossover in these days of many-cog
cassettes--basically the Half-Step is replaced by a close-ratio 1X10, and
the Granny remains as bailout.

Best Regards,

Will

[RBW] Got my wrecked SimpleOne back from the police.

2015-12-08 Thread David Spranger
It has been a while since I have posted as I have not ridden in a very long
time (until this past week!).

I did receive my wrecked SO back from the police this week. Spent an
afternoon removing the parts from the frame and seeing what is what.
Remarkably, most of the parts are in excellent shape. In fact besides the
frame itself (which I don't know how will end up), the only parts I will
not be able to reuse are the rear rim and spokes and the rear fender (I was
hit from the rear and the wheel essentially disintegrated) and maybe the
handlebars which are aluminum and I may decide not to trust anymore. What
is really remarkable to me and I am very proud to say, is that the front
dynamo wheel that I built when I acquired the frame several years back, is
as true as the day I took it off the truing stand the day I built it.

I am so happy that I am riding again, though it may be some time before I
get the freedom to ride as I used to do.

Those wheels look just right. How does it ride?

My first fixed converstion, circa 1996-1997, was a black 58 cm Tempo -- a
very nice handling bike, though quite heavy. But I recall gently reshaping
the seatstay bridge with a hammer to allow accommodation of a 700C X 26

[RBW] Re: Look at my lugs!

2015-12-08 Thread Leslie
Several times on the Creeper and on the Greenbelt, I've had lots of
complements on 'em, but the one that stood out the most was once while
riding the Ram on our Greenbelt, my daughter and I'd passed an older
gentleman heading out, then met him again on our return leg as he rested on
a bench as we passed, he called out "I love Grant Petersen's designs!";
much to my daughter's chagrin, I had to pull up and turn around to chat w/
the fella for a bit... he'd previously run a bikeshop, had retired from
such.

Another similar story, I had the Bomba on Ocracoke; earlier in the week, I
had it locked up at various shops in the village, where it'd been noticed
closely. Near the end of the week, while riding through the campground
(again with my daughter), a fella came running out from his netting
shelter, calling out "My brother used to work for Paul's Components";
again to the chagrin of my daughter, I turned around and had to chat...
he'd even noticed the brakes on my bike. He's one of the Hunt brothers,
had left Cali and moved to Charlotte...

Yeah, Rivendells are not a bike to ride if you want to blend in

[RBW] Re: Bombadil Tire Clearance

2015-12-08 Thread Chad
Garth- I too have an '83 Stumpjumper Sport frame and a box full of the most
of the original parts. I'm not sure what the tire clearance is like, but I
have this neat old article from '83 as a reference
http://www.vintagecrank.com/vintage-bicycle-articles/Fat-Tire-Bikes-Bicycle-Mag-May-83.pdf

Looks like every bike test is running 2.125 tires. I also have a '87 MB-2
(one of Grant's first designs, the first was the '86 MB-1) that can only
fit a fit a 1.9 tire. I was able to squeeze in some reproduction Panaracer
Timbuk II 2.0 tires, but they are super tight fit between the chainstays.

Jim and Ted- sounds like you guys have similiar issues on your early
Bombadils (mine is a 52 BTW), so the problem is not just unique to my
Bomba. I think you folks our right about the Bomba being designed at a
time when the Schwalbe HS 315 "Fatty" (true size 45-47) was the biggest
650b tire readily available. I CAN get about 5mm of clearance between tire
and bridge if I run the Quasi's at 25-28 psi, but the one time I ran them
that low I got a pinch flat. I usually run 35 on pavement and then drop to
30 on rough trails. I would like to eventually upgrade to a tubeless setup.

Mud clearance was a big issue this past season for both my Hillborne and
Bomba. I used my Hillborne for the Dirty Kanza gravel grinder and ending
up carrying it for 3 miles because the wheels kept getting stuck between
the frame and sidepulls. I ended up wearing through the paint in a couple
of spots when I finally was able to get the wheels unclogged enough to spin
the clay-like mud was full of sand and pebbles. I was running 40.5 wide
Fatty Rumpkins and had at least 10mm of clearance above the tires on the
Hillborne. I may switch to Paul Racers and 38 mm tires this year on the
Hillborne. Similiarly, our local single track trails in KC were closed
most of June and July here in KC due to rain and when they were open, they
were still sticky in dirt and slick on the rocks. I tried running the
Schwalbe Fatties but could not get enough traction for climbing.

I have been talking to Rick at D cycles about getting the Bomba
repainted, but I don't want to wreck the new paint with tire rub. I am
also considering trying to get the bridge raised 5mm. I just installed
Bruce Gordon Rock n Roads and they have tons of room in the frame and the
tanwalls look great on the Bomba. I am hoping the work well enough on our
local trails. I use my Bomba as here in KC as my primary trail bike, as my
full-suspension MTB currently lives at our vacation place in Colorado.

[RBW] New Winter Project: Another 650B conversion, thanks in part to you

2015-12-08 Thread true
Sure Lee.

They came off ebay.

Note, I am no wheel expert.

I am guessing I may have 300 miles or so on them.

For my experiment with 650b they are working well.

I think he accepted $10 less which covered part of shipping so I don't have
much invested

into my test but overall they seem decent enough

The rims are Zac19 36 hole and the hub shells have no labels but look very
similar to what I have seen labeled Parallax / Alivio / Acera.

The bearings seemed way too tight so I opened them up and added a bit of grease
and adjusted them where they spin nicely.

They also currently spin true. I am unsure about longevity on wheels at this
price point.

I measured the outside width at 23mm. I guess the 19m he list is the inside
width.

I do not see 36 spoke wheels listed currently. You might send the seller a
message to inquire when he expects more.

Clicking on new listing links directed me to 28 spoke wheels.

Here's his description:

Silver 650B / 27.5 wheels, 130mm rear, 100mm front,

double walled aluminum alloy rims, 1"wide, 7/ 8/9 Speed,

( I can provide for free an adapter to convert wheel to 7 speed, just ask),

36 DT IND silver spokes, Alloy hubs, quick release skewers included,

Schrader valve drilling, ERTRO 584 x 19mm

Can you divulge the source of this budget 650b wheelset?

I have 2 mid '80s schwinn travellers ('86 in black and '88 in teal/white fade).
I've converted the '86 to 700 x 37 paselas which fit but make fenders nothing
but a pipe dream. I'm considering converting the '88 to 650b.

[RBW] Re: Bombadil Tire Clearance

2015-12-08 Thread Surlyprof
I would think twice about the Mondials if you are thinking about them for
dirt. I use them in a 40 for commuting and they roll well on the road are
are sturdy (no flats in over a year). I bought them hoping they would be a
good crossover tire for road and trail but they tend to slip a lot on dirt.
Too much smooth surface area in the center. The knobs open up a little on
the sides which provide pretty confident turning on hardpack trails. In my
opinion, Mondials were designed for road and hardpack but not dirt and
rock. Perfect for my commute.

Re: [RBW] New Winter Project: Another 650B conversion, thanks in part to you

2015-12-08 Thread Tim Gavin
I have a set of identical cheapo 650b wheels from the same eBay seller
(uglyrm). He doesn't have any available right now, but keep an eye out for
them.

I bought the cheapo set when I first tried 650b on my Riv Road. I put
about 1000 miles on the wheels, with a decent load (my 240 lbs plus about
20 lbs of cargo). No problems, no re-truing needed.
I replaced the cheapos with a set I built (original Phil hubs to Synergy
rims), and moved the cheapos to a 650b conversion of a Bianchi for my
daughter.

My girlfriend's Soma San Marcos 51 cm build also came with these cheapo
wheels. She's much lighter than me, but has about 1500 miles on them with
no problems.

My only complaint: The ZAC19 rim has a deep well, much like a Synergy,
which makes it tough to get tires to seat properly the first time. Soap on
the beads helps a lot.

[RBW] New Winter Project: Another 650B conversion, thanks in part to you

2015-12-08 Thread true
Tim,

If you posted about those wheels here or on the ibob list I probably learned of
them from you.

I don't come up with much original but continually learn from the good folks on
these lists.
There are so many willing to share their knowledge and help others. Thanks to
you all.

Trying what many of you have found works well has enabled me to get a few cool
bikes dialed
in that are a pleasure to ride.

If I occasionally get one to look pretty good in the process it just adds to
the enjoyment.

I don't recall if I shared this but another bike I miss and probably about the
loveliest bike I have ever owned
(and I have owned a bunch over the years) since that 1985 Tempo was a brand new
1999 Joe built Riv Road
assisted by Grant to pick a size.
That's one I would probably take out a loan to get back and kick myself for
letting it go.

At the time I was in a 'lighter is better' frame of mind. Live and learn.
Somewhere I still have the tube set design sheet he sent me showing the mix and
match of tubes and the frame design.
It was a gorgeous blue color with contrasting creme head tube and terrific
looking lugs.
I have a few pics of it somewhere.

Chad,

I wouldn't say I have issues with my Bombadil. It works great for me, and I
am very happy with it. But it does sound like you probably have the same
clearance that I do, and that there isn't anything off nominal about your
frame. If you want/need to run Quasi-Motos at 30 to 35 psi and would rather
run larger tires that that, I suspect you would be happier with a different
frame. Perhaps a Hunqapillar.

about as thick as a thin nut. So I think there are enough threads there to
do the job. Sadly my local hardware store doesn't stock stainless button
head m5 bolts as short as I want so I had to cut some of one off so it
wouldn't interfere with the brake mounting. I will probably shorten the
bolt a bit more and move the fender closer to the bridge but for the moment
the fender is on there and seems pretty good.
So yay.

Retroreflective brake bridge tape, of course! For the added night-time

[RBW] Oops, I did it again: 2016 bike calendar

2015-12-08 Thread Eunice Chang
Hi all,

Thought this might be of interest to the list:

I made another calendar featuring mostly Riv bikes (AHH and quickbeam) for
2016. Proceeds go to Bike Durham, a local bike advocacy group. Here's the
link if you want to see the calendar and order one.

https://squareup.com/market/justshiny/bike-calendar-1

Just for folks on this list (because you are good enablers and I thought
I'd return the favor), there is a discount ($5 off calendar plus free
shipping). The code is:
ENJOYTHERIDE

Thanks!
Eunice

It is without a doubt that working on bikes is a big therapy for me. My
good friend and list member, Pam, allowed me to work on her well used Betty
Foy recently. It was a joy to work on such a fine and well appreciated
machine!

[RBW] Re: Got my wrecked SimpleOne back from the police.

2015-12-08 Thread Deacon Patrick
Fantastic! It took me 3-4 years to be able to work on our family bikes.
Riv's are by a long shot the easiest and most joyful to work on. Getting my
daughters Clementines was in large part selfish, but I the practicality of
the Bike Friday trumped by selfishness with my wife's bike and she got a
cargo bike! Sardonic grin. The contemplative workshop time (for me, with
Holy Papa Joseph gently showing me what a moron I am) is amazing therapy
for my boggled brain!

With abandon,
Patrick
