[RBW] Fully Clothed Joe

I never would have thought of putting that bright green saddle on a light blue

[RBW] Re: Those Long Chainstays and chains

2016-03-31 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Yeah, the long stay (limo stay?) models (as opposed to long tail, which
have the same or greater need) take a long chain. But I'm not getting how a
triple has much to do with it. It would be determined based on your
big/big, irregardless of how many cogs in back or rings in front. Which I
guess these days could mean a 53 up front with a 50 in back...that might
even require an extra link or two on a non-stretch bike! My Clementine has
the tiny stock 38/24 double and it still needs extra links.

You made a deal, and even if it is with yourself, you should honor it. Get the
Atlantis. If you don't, you'll always be thinking about it. I had a similar
deal with myself about committing to being an adult, prior to hunq ownership,
and that thing means so much to me. When all the other bikes go, that will be
the one left standing.

Erl's Romulus project came full circle (at least to me) this morning as we

'Ford Blue' really pops in person even more than I think it does in photos.
Great work Erl and as always it was great to see you today!

I also believe I saw Howard on his 2TT Sage Hillborne headed south on the

I have an Atlantis. Great bike. But I think you should get a CLEM. That
gives you do-all Atlantis/Appaloosa capability without $$$ investment.

Wait for the Riv pendulum to swing back to classic road frames. A Rodeo or
Legolas that runs modern chubbies with fender clearance would be the bee's
knees.

2016-03-31 Thread Bill Lindsay
I don't follow. What information are you looking for?

Are you asking for resale value because you want to get rid of them?
Are you really asking if Phil hubs are worth their price?
Are you asking about the rims? What do you want to know?

I use 700c Bontrager Fairlane rims on my Atlantis. I bought the rims off
the list for $20 each. I like them a lot. They are stout, and I like the
Asym rear for equal spoke tension, and they built up nicely. I can see how
one might consider 36H Phil Hubs and Fairlane rims too stout for a Ram,
which is really more of a sporty road bike than a touring bike. That
wheelset would make a nice stout touring wheelset for somebody.

Looks fantastic. I might swap cockpits between my Atlantis and Appaloosa
someday for fun, too. The Appaloosa would do fine with drop bars, and I
bet the Appaloosa would be fun with Choco-mooses.

[RBW] Re: Those Long Chainstays and chains

2016-03-31 Thread scott
Took 11 extra links. This is on a 51 cm. The cables were all long enough,
but I could see on the bigger models, and especially with the 64cm Clems,
holy smokes!
Also, I went to setup the front canti brakes and whoops! No cable stop. I
should have asked when I ordered if they could put on on. I forgot they
have these setup for V-brakes. Looks like the bike will have a nice rusty
Dia-Compe cable stop on the headset! Aren't parts bins great?

Re: [RBW] Re: Those Long Chainstays and chains

2016-03-31 Thread Tim Gavin
You may have to buy longer chains, intended for tandems and/or recumbents.

Similarly, some shift cables aren't long enough for the run of bar-end +
cable loop + large frame, so some of use longer shift cables intended for
tandems.

I was contemplating that on my morning ride. I normally stock up on SRAM

Hey Gang,
Putting together my wife's Joe and came across a little snag. The
chainstays are super long, cool, but a standard 114 link chain is too short
for a triple. Called Rivendell and they said they have a bulk roll of chain
that they use to put the bikes together. So, keep that in mind when you
have to replace your chains in the future. Does anyone know of a super long

[RBW] FS: Brooks Challenge Tool Saddle Bag, Black, Used, $35

2016-03-31 Thread Minh

Brooks Challenge Tool Saddle Bag, Black, $35

This is the small leather tool bag, i picked this up second hand and one of
the bolts had come undone on one of the straps, i replaced it with a nut
and bolt, you can see the bolt on the inside. There is some scratches and
wear on the leather, it could use a good polish. The straps are a little
crunchy, but it still feels like it will hold. Solid used condition.

Re: [RBW] Talk to me about Dyno power/lighting

2016-03-31 Thread Mark Reimer
I'm running a SONdelux hub, eDelux II light, and have a sinewave revolution
unit for charging. I can lollygag along with the light OFF and my iPhone 6
plugged in, while running Strava/some GPS tracking app, and the phone stays
at 100% all the time. I think it hits peak charging at about 12km/h or
something like that. If the light is on while I'm charging, neither works
well. But the SONdelux has a lower output than some hubs, designed to have
minimal drag.

I like this setup because it lets me use the very excellent and very
beautiful eDelux II light. It's AWESOME. I don't need to charge stuff on a
daily basis. Pretty much only when I'm on a tour. So having a built-in
charging port is not a deal breaker to me. I put some connectors between
the hub and the light that enables me to hook the sinewave up in seconds.
Works well for me.

I have not asked Riv if they will stock them. I'm genuinely looking to
snatch up the unwanted castoffs from the group first. It's SUPER common to
buy a bike and immediately change saddle and pedals, so I figured it's
pretty likely. Heck, when I picked up my Appaloosa there were another 5

On the other hand, I sometimes suspect I have a reverse jinx. If I say I

Re: [RBW] Talk to me about Dyno power/lighting

2016-03-31 Thread Tim Gavin
In my limited experience (several days of RAGBRAI and other social tours),
the Luxos U's USB charging was enough to slowly trickle charge my iPhone
while it was running Strava (a charge-intensive app, because it uses the
GPS sensor) and sometimes streaming music via bluetooth to a speaker.

For example, in 6 hours of day riding (while running Strava), the iPhone's
power would raise from 30% to 70%, or thereabouts. I presume the iPhone
would charge more quickly if it wasn't running apps (especially if you put
it in Low Power mode).

During the night with the light on standard beam (the Luxos U has a +10 lux
high-beam setting), there wasn't enough spare power to charge the iPhone
while it was running. When the iPhone was powered off, it would gain a
very slow trickle charge with the light on.
The Luxos U seems to prioritize the light output over the USB; the light
didn't appreciably dim when a device was plugged in. The Sinewave and
other separate solutions may be more reliable device-chargers (but more
expensive).

*One oddity to report*: the Luxos U on my Riv Road 650b NEVER TURNS OFF.
Normally, the Luxos U will drop its light output down to a
safety/standlight intensity once you stop, and then the safety/standlight
turns off within a minute or two. My Riv's Luxos (wired to a Shimano
DH-3N80 hub) stays in the safety/standlight mode FOR WEEKS AT A TIME
(tested this winter, during fat bike season).
I have another Luxos U that has been wired to a Shimano XT DH-T780 hub and
now an SP PD-8, and it exhibits normal behavior (turns off after a couple
minutes).
I'm not trying to fix this "problem" because it doesn't seem to have any
ill effect (except maybe burning out the LEDs more quickly; but I think
they have million-hour lifespans anyway). But it is an oddity!

Drew, since you want to charge a lot of devices, have you considered a
double dynamo solution? A front hub for your light, and a Velogical rim
dynamo on the rear for USB charging? Riv/BOB listers have done crazier
things...

what hub/wheel size are you using? if you're using the SP SV hubs, they
don't have enough power to juice lighting and usb. i have a 650b wheelset

Check out the GC1 Ergon grips--they're intended for swept-back bars. The
flat area extends to either side of the bar, rather than simply behind. I
like them on angled swept-back bars like my Avenir Circa and Jones Loop.
On Bosco's and Alba's, I like a larger diameter round grip, like Oury's.

Re: [RBW] Talk to me about Dyno power/lighting

2016-03-31 Thread Anton Tutter
Here's the experiment I did: it was a wheel roll-down test, which measured
the time it took for the wheel to come to a complete stop from a hard spin.
It was a science experiment I did with my 9 year old daughter. The higher
the resistive load on the dynamo, the faster the wheel comes to a stop. We
did the experiment on two different dynamo wheels: a 650B wheel with
Schmidt Hub, and a 20" wheel with SP hub. The 20" wheel had much faster
roll-down because smaller wheels have lower rotational inertia. Notice the
sinewave charger had the same wheel roll-down time as nothing at all
attached to the dynamo. The lights had the fastest roll-down time. I also
threw in a couple of different resistors for comparison.

Re: [RBW] Talk to me about Dyno power/lighting

2016-03-31 Thread Anton Tutter
I did an experiment, and came to the conclusion that the Sinewave charger
does not draw any significant power when there is no device plugged into
it. According to Sinewave's owner and founder, it draws about 6mA without
any device plugged in. That's about 1% of a typical dynamo load.

Most modern headlights have built-in on/off switches.

If you have a threadless headset, you can even get an integrated switch for
your lighting system that looks like a rotating stem cap, it was developed
and is hand-fabricated by me and Tom Matchak and we sell it through Velo
Lumino.

Re: [RBW] Talk to me about Dyno power/lighting

2016-03-31 Thread Eric Norris
I had a SineWave on a former bike, and as Howard said it doesn’t draw very much
power at all unless there’s something plugged into it. Based on my experience
(with a Shimano dyno hub), the SineWave works best all by itself. Running an
Edelux light and using the SineWave to charge at the same time reduces the
brightness of the headlight. Charge your phone during the day when the lights
are off.

Thanks for all the responses. Looking forward to sitting down with all the
links and info. It's a whole new realm.
I like the simplicity of luxos+usb. seems like it would be the easiest option.
Something like Sinewave is actually what I assumed I was going to have to use,
and that plus an external battery seems maybe more powerful and more boyscouty
in its preparedness.

Excuse the dumb questions, but...

Say you go sinewave + random light. Are there off switches on these things? Or
I guess, is the sinewave pulling power if nothing I plugged into it.
Conversely, are there plain off switches on most lights? I'm aware that some
have a light sensor with daytime/night time power.
I guess my goal is to be able to power phone, music, camera (I have one device
for each... I know, I know) during the day and use only the light at night.
Just trying to see if power would need to be divided in this setup, or if
day/night useage could be fully dedicated to power/light, respectively.

B&M IQ-X headlight and rear lights. Velogical is worth considering because
the dynamo is very efficient, weighs 70 grams and, because it spins on the
rim, can be moved away from that rim to improve rolling resistance and will
not require the expense of a new hub and wheel build.
The Velogical might be a tad underpowered for the lights I have but so far
I find that the light emitted from the IQ-X is quite bright. I worry about
this new set up actually being too bright for oncoming drivers. This is
all a bit preliminary but my hunch is that the Velogical will be a good
product.
Again, the Velogical requires no new wheel build, is less expensive, is
efficient and really quite an elegant, German made product.
Good luck. At some point, after wiring is completed I hope to post
pictures.

That piggyback connector crimps to the sinewave wires and attaches to your hub

Thanks for the tire info...I'm thinking about doing the 2.2 FasTraks on my

get it rolling with but what I really want to do is lace some of the new

[RBW] FS: Shimano Saint pedals and Five Ten shoes

2016-03-31 Thread dstein
 - Shimano PD-MX80 Saint Pedals - $45 shipped (only used for a month or so,
went back to clipless)
- Five Ten Men's Freerider Sneakers, size 10 - $65 shipped (only ridden for
2 or 3 rides, like new, great shoes but decided to go back to clipless, I
cut the strings and used some adjustable clips to keep the strings in place
so they wouldn’t tie and hang loose, these are $100 new.

Also, I realize this is a weird thing to tack on for some shoes and pedals,
but I may be putting a 48cm green Hunqapillar up for sale this summer and
putting a feeler out now to gauge interest. Thinking of selling complete
(albastache build kit, triple sugino crank, silver shifters with rear on
right bar end and front on left downtube, rat trap pass tires, p65 fenders,
and recently installed paul motolite brakes.) A little beausage, it was my
primary mountain bike for a good year and a half, used some touch up paint
ordered from waterford, all surface scratches, no frame damage or dents.
The tires, brakes, levers, and fenders are all newer and were a bit of an
investment (within the last 3 months). I have some Smart Sams too. Possible
saddle and rack(s). PM me if interested.

The piggyback connectors should already by twice as wide to account for the
double thickness. Just press them onto the hub terminals as normal, and
you'll have a second set of new terminals to plug your headight wire into.

Re: [RBW] The wind, for us & against us

2016-03-31 Thread Patrick Moore
I hope you'll post photos of the trip; I can't imagine a landscape more
different to mine than that you describe.

Wind: yes indeed! I went on a 21 mile out and back on the gofast yesterday,
more or less southward, with wind gusting to 24 mph from NW. Averaged 17.27
clock running outbound, 15.42 return, not pushing too hard. On Tuesday the
wind was 31 gusting to 43 from the SW -- I stayed home and fought to keep
the neighbor's yard debris out of my garden and garage -- great dust clouds
and rolling waves of tumbleweeds blowing across the roads on the westside,
though we don't have the dust storms that we had back before the westside
was as built up as today.

I deliberately took it easy outbound yesterday, warmed up nicely, and
pushed it just a little harder on the return, managing quite well in the
75" without recourse to the 65" flip gear. I swear, the Compass Elk Pass
EL's just make pedaling easier.

I checked out the Sinewave Cycles booth at NAHBS and came away impressed.
I'm going to get the Piggyback connectors to run the charger in parallel
with my light. However, now that I'm checking their site to order them, I
cannot figure out how they're installed on the Shmidt hub.

Do thy go side by side with the tabs on the hub and if so, do you need to
pry open one of the connectors due to the double thickness?

Maybe I'm slow this morning, but I can't remember how it was explained to
me at their booth. There are no instructions on the website.

Thanks for the shout out, Brian!

Agreed, starting at Velo Lumino for generator basics is a great idea :). I
offer the same wiring, connectors, grommets, and general installation
materials that I use on all my custom installations. I also sell SP hubs.

For USB charging, I highly recommend the Sinewave Cycles USB charger
(sinewavecycles.com), either the "Revolution" (matchbox size, zip-ties to
fork) or the "Reactor" (integrated into a threadless stem cap with wires
concealed within the fork steerer). Both use the same electronics, which
are superior to any of the ones offered by Supernova and B&M. The Sinewave
charger is also designed and manufactured in the US.

[RBW] Talk to me about Dyno power/lighting

2016-03-31 Thread Howard Hatten
I recently went to a Dyno hub on my Atlantis. I'm using the luxos B for
lighting. This is what Peter white recommended for my type of riding. For
charging I'm using the sine wave revolution charger.
http://www.sinewavecycles.com/
It has a feature that delays charging for a few seconds to let you get up to
speed. I hear some electronics get cranky when you throw some lower charge at
them. This unit is small, the size of a match box. 1.5 hr of riding raised my
iPhone from 38 to 52 %.
I'm told running lights and charging diminishes output but I haven't verified
that yet. On multiday rides I'm planning on charging to a storage battery and
charging my stuff off that at night. All this charging happens in a small bar
tube bag.
Safe riding

drew,

it can feel overwhelming but don't over-think it too much, one thing i have
noticed is that lights are leap-frogging each other in terms of brightness
every year, even something like the luxos u (which is only 2 years old?)
are being beat in terms of brightness by the lights coming out now. the
luxos is still quite bright so if the USB is a requirement i would still
choose it, but if not check out the newer lights as well.

peter white and anton's site (velolumino) will have you covered, anton in
particular will give you the cleanest installation tips.

+1 on the Luxos U. I'm happy with the beam, and routinely use the USB for
powering my GPS and phone. If you go with a separate device for USB
charging, you might have to incorporate a cache battery to even out the
current.

Michael,
Sounds like a lovely trip. I enjoy cycling the northern section of OBX. You
are right about the wind! My first day there this past summer I had an
unrealized tailwind until I turned around to head back. Boy did that
realization crush my ego!
Safe trip home.

Re: [RBW] Talk to me about Dyno power/lighting

2016-03-31 Thread Tim Gavin
If you want USB charging, the cheapest option is to buy the Luxos U
headlight. Riv, Peter White, and several European sellers carry it. I'm
very happy with the Luxos U, I have them on two bikes and convinced my
girlfriend's father to get one.

Otherwise, there are plenty of add-on USB chargers. They're a
less-integrated but possibly more robust solution.
This article is a good resource.
http://www.cyclingabout.com/list-of-hub-dynamo-power-supplies-for-usb-devices/

A separate USB device allows you to use any headlight. The Luxos U has a
very wide beam but it has lots of reflector artifacts (noticeable bars in
the beam). They don't bother me but they do bother some.

Also, if you get the Luxos U, follow Riv's recommendations to mount it high
and centrally (to get the most out of its massive beam) and to protect the
backside from water coming off the tire.
On my Riv Road 650b, I mounted it to the front of a Mark's rack, shielded
by a Treetop rando bag.
On my Foundry Auger, I mounted it to the handlebar, shielded by the front
fender.

Congratulations on your new dynamo wheel!

[RBW] The wind, for us & against us

2016-03-31 Thread Michael Hechmer
Pat and I have been exploring the Outer Banks of NC on our tandem. For the
first three of days in NC we explored the northern half of the Outer Banks,
(written in NC as OBX). The northern end of the islands is the most
developed part, but has two big advantages - bike lane/paths and a steady
wind out of the north which blew us back to our inn when we tired. On the
third day we decided to head south to visit a lighthouse, probably less
than 20 miles south of the inn. We enjoyed the ride down and the site
seeing, but the ride back into the wind was exhausting. So on our last
full day we decided to drive south toward Cape Hatteras and then ride
north. We loaded the tandem on the top of the Golf Sportwagon and headed
out. The drive was lovely, on a narrow road bordered by dunes along the
national seashore. The stunning sand dunes and absolutely gorgeous
beaches to walk on made the trip worthwhile even as the wind whipped sand
stung our bare legs. When we got as far as Avon, 43 miles south on the
First Colonial Inn, we concluded that we weren’t going to find any rideable
roads, made a U turn and headed back.

At this point we noticed that on the trip down we had averaged an amazing
63mpg! By the time we had returned along the same road that average had
dropped to 52, which is a difference of 22 mpg! You can put that in your
powermeter and smoke it!

Michael, now in Chincoteague Va. and slowly meandering back to Vermont.

Check out this site for materials.

http://www.velolumino.com/

I used the thin wire they supplied and ran it inside my fender and along my
frame by imbeding it ina bead of GOOP adhesive. It holds securely and peels
right off if need be with no damage to the paint. I was trying to have my
bike not covered in wires wrapped around everything.

I also used their taillight which is expensive but works and looks great. I
used a Schmidt Edelux II headlight and it is pretty awesome. Very bright
and very light.
