[RBW] FS: 55cm Sam Hillborne

2016-08-04 Thread GSE

I am selling my blue Sam Hillborne. It is a 55 cm single top tube. I
purchased it new in May of 2015 from RBW. RBW built up the bike. I have
ridden this bike very little. It has less than 250 miles on it. The bike
is in excellent condition. There is a very small nick in the paint on the
left front fork. (See photograph). Rivendell originally built it with an
Albatross bar. I had the Albatross bar changed by my local bike shop to a
Nitto Noodle drop bar. The bike has the following parts.

Nitto Noodle 44 cm handlebar

Shimano brake levers model BL-R400

Dura Ace 9 speed bar end shifters

Brooks B-17 saddle

RBW Grip King Pedals (pedals were not purchased new with bike. I already
had these pedals. They are used, but in good working order).

Schwalbe Marathon Supreme Tires - 700 x 35

Wheels are 36 spoke Velocity Dyad/Shimano LX hubs built by Rick Linsek of
RBW

Sugino XD2 46/36/24 crankset with 172.5 crank arms

Shimano Deore XT front derailleur

Shimano XT 9 speed rear derailleur

Tekrto R 559 Brakes

11-32 9 speed cassette

Nitto Technomic 9 cm stem (This is not original stem, had to get 26.0
clamp stem for Noodle Bar)

Seatpost, bottom bracket, and headset were included with the frame from RBW

$1,950.00 plus shipping. I will have my local bike shop pack and box the
bike for shipping at my expense. Buyer pays actual shipping cost.
 Estimated shipping cost is $150.00.

Re: [RBW] Re: Waterford Paint

2016-08-04 Thread René Sterental
Here is some empirical learnings:

When Rick at D&D (RBW official/recommended painter, who apparently also
painted my custom for Steve Rex) re-painted my Homer and my Hunqapillar, he
told me that paint needed a long period of time to "cure" or whatever the
correct term is, and until that process was complete, it was very prone to
chipping easily. He sort of recommended I leave my bikes hanging for at
least a month before riding them to allow this to happen.

With many of the Waterford bikes that are custom made for a specific order,
the time between the painting being applied and the customer getting the
fully assembled bike and riding it may still be too short (speculation
here) and so in its early days, the bike may be more prone to chipping the
paint than when it's older. This, of course, excludes large hits, prolonged
rubbing, falls against sharp objects, etc., that will chip/scratch the
paint no matter what.

I also feel your paint, but now that your bike has its first real
scratch/chip, it may be ages before you get another one... such is paint
karma!

Of course, some of us go bezerk no matter when it happens, and calling it
beausage is just a "pretend" name to feel OK with it. Others don't really
care. It must be in the genes, because it turns out that my son is just
like me with his stuff in this regard.

Best,

René

It was long, long ago (in a galaxy far, far away, too) but my first Riv

trunk racks, I've never had one chip my paint.

[RBW] Re: Waterford Paint

2016-08-04 Thread Jonathan Anderson
Oh boy, I've been waiting for a thread like this! I was installing a front
rack in my building's bike garage and thoughtlessly leaned my bike against
a haggard ebike to admire my work. It slipped and the TT scraped
(screeeach) against the licence plate hanger of the ebike. My Clem, yes,
just a Clem..., suffered a couple nice scratches, including a nice black
one that I have not been able to remove the paint from (my bike is
blue...). This has been weighing on my mind ever since. So careless!! I
considered thrashing my bike on the trails to lessen the burden of guilt,
but soon realized it would only make things worse. While I'm sure the Clem
will weather magnificently, I struggle to reconcile the erroneous manner in
which it happened. I also blame the ebike, but that hasn't helped much.
Everyone hates those things. Kind of feel bad for it, actually...

I've also warped my back wheel/rim launching off a doozy of a curb, but
that was somehow worth it... Perfect two-wheel landing straight into a
trail. Still feels good. Does RBW sell the 650B DM18's?

Point is, I feel your pain. Really. Not that any of this has anything to do
with Waterford.

[RBW] Re: SUNRACE One-At-a-Time shifter maintenance?

2016-08-04 Thread masmojo
I have these on 3 bikes, generally they are OK, but the right one I struggle
with from time to time.
I recently was using my Rawland which has Silver Shifters and was really
noticing how much better they worked Vs. the Sun Race.
Check the tightness of the retaining screw, it may be loose!?

[RBW] Re: Waterford Paint

2016-08-04 Thread Bob B
I kinda feel like venting on this topic. My 3-week old Hunq got a big paint
chip on the top tube. I'm not faulting Riv or Waterford; I didn't see it
happen and can't speak with much knowledge to the quality of Waterford
paint compared to others. But since it's so new it kinda sucks.

I think it happened while transporting the bike on a trunk rack on my car.
The chip occurred close to where the TT had been strapped to the rack...
the typical soft plastic/rubber kind on car racks. I guess I should add
another layer of something for extra cushion next time. But Ive been using
that rack forever, never have seen that happen. I wonder if that's grounds
to say the Waterford paint is "prone to chipping."

I didn't build a show bike and I'm on board with *beausage* and will
probably end up doing the fingernail polish thing. I will surely ride this
bike so heavily that other chips will happen and I won't care anymore.
Maybe it had nothing to do with Waterford's paint job and all to do with my
rack and what bump or pot hole I may have ran over. But it still sucks it
happened while this—my first Rivendell—is brand-spanking-new.

Onward, to more riding!

Thank you for letting me vent.

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam Jaunt

2016-08-04 Thread Deacon Patrick
Ha! From the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary:

   - *1* A tiring or troublesome journey. Now only as an iron. use of sense
   2. l16.
   - *2* An excursion, a journey; *esp.* a pleasure trip. l17.

Certainly it wasn't troublesome, but I was tired after it. Grin. Also,
there was a Winnie the Pooh "tra-la-la" quality to the middle half that
follows the rivers. Rather an idyllic ramble or jaunt. One "trick" I've
learned to longer Quickbeam rides is to incorporate the "tra-la-la" aspect
at every opportunity. Challenging to do cranking up a 10 mile climb, but
I'm working on it! Grin.

Patrick

Hello DP,

What an epic and beautiful ride! But calling it a jaunt at 109 miles
doesn't seem to fit. The ride I did this morning of 25 miles on my QB is
more to my idea of a short excursion for pleasure, not to say your's wasn't
pleasurable, just not short.

I picked up some OE bars from a Joe Appa for a build and was admittedly
disappointed to set TIG'd joints as opposed to the filet brazen craftsmanship
you would expect on a $160 moosey bar. Is this like the Clem Bosco-moose vs.

We have an awesome ride planned for our upcoming coffee outside social. I
hope DC area riders can make it out! The weather has been breaking as
well, so unless it rains, we should have a good day of mountain riding.
I added a ride cue for the August 14th Riv and B stone Coffee Ride and
Social here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/15503887

Also added some pictures of the ride area at the facebook events page for
the ride, here: https://www.facebook.com/events/826464890824369/
